NASA's LCROSS Impacts Confirm Water in Lunar Crater
MOFFETT FIELD, Calif. -- Preliminary data from NASA's Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite, or LCROSS, indicates the mission successfully uncovered water in a permanently shadowed lunar crater. The discovery opens a new chapter in our understanding of the moon.
The LCROSS spacecraft and a companion rocket stage made twin impacts in the Cabeus crater Oct. 9 that created a plume of material from the bottom of a crater that has not seen sunlight in billions of years. The plume traveled at a high angle beyond the rim of Cabeus and into sunlight, while an additional curtain of debris was ejected more laterally.
"We're unlocking the mysteries of our nearest neighbor and, by extension, the solar system," said Michael Wargo, chief lunar scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "The moon harbors many secrets, and LCROSS has added a new layer to our understanding."
Scientists long have speculated about the source of significant quantities of hydrogen that have been observed at the lunar poles. The LCROSS findings are shedding new light on the question with the discovery of water, which could be more widespread and in greater quantity than previously suspected. If the water that was formed or deposited is billions of years old, these polar cold traps could hold a key to the history and evolution of the solar system, much as an ice core sample taken on Earth reveals ancient data. In addition, water and other compounds represent potential resources that could sustain future lunar exploration.

At NASA's press conference Friday, researchers could barely contain themselves. They'd struck water on the moon, they announced - most likely, lots of it!
Last month, the space agency intentionally crashed a rocket into a dark, cold spot near the moon's south pole, just to see if the impact might kick up interesting dust. And sure enough, it did: The mile-high cloud included roughly 25 gallons of water molecules, believed to be from ice long buried beneath the lunar surface.
"This is not your father's moon," exulted scientist Greg Delory. "Rather than a dead and unchanging world, it could in fact be a very dynamic and interesting one."
For planetary scientists, of course, words like "dynamic" and "interesting" apply to things far slower-moving than Jon and Kate Gosselin's relationship or Sarah Palin's career. We're not talking about a little boy believed to be adrift in a wacko homemade weather balloon; we're talking about ice that's been around for eons and - except when we crash things into it - isn't going anywhere.
Still, for proponents of sending humans back to the moon, the discovery counts as high drama. As the Obama administration ponders whether manned spaceflight is worth $3 billion a year, the possibility of water on the moon suddenly makes a self-sustaining colony seem possible.
In other words, maybe next time we wouldn't just go back to the moon. Maybe we'd stay.

Scientists have found "significant" amounts of water in a crater at the moon's south pole, a major discovery that will dramatically revise the characterization of the moon as a dead world and probably make it a more attractive destination for future human space missions.
"The moon is alive," declared Anthony Colaprete, the chief scientist for the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite mission.
That mission, which on Oct. 9 used a rocket to punch a hole about 100 feet across in the moon's surface, measured about 25 gallons of water in the form of vapor and ice.
Although that's not enough to swim in, it could be evidence there is enough water in permanently shaded craters at the poles for future astronauts to live off the land.
NASA plans under review by the Obama administration call for a return to the moon at the end of the next decade and construction of a lunar base in which astronauts could live and work for months at a time. The presence of large quantities of water would make that plan more practical, because water could be used for drinking, respiration and even to make rocket fuel.
A resource-rich moon also could serve as the perfect low-gravity launching pad for missions that would carry astronauts and their families elsewhere in the solar system.
"This is painting a surprising new picture of the moon. This is not your father's moon," said Greg Delory, a space scientist at the University of California, Berkeley. He referred to the fact that, after the Apollo missions of the 1960s and '70s, the moon was regarded as a dead, forbidding place with little to offer future explorers.
The new findings indicate that the moon retains the power to surprise.
"What's really exciting is we've only hit one spot," said Peter Schultz, a geology professor at Brown University and a co-investigator on the mission. "It's kind of like when you're drilling for oil.
