A Proclamation
Whoever has heard the laughter of a child or seen sudden delight on the face of a lonely old man has understood in those brief moments mysteries deeper than love.
All men are indebted to those who bring such moments of quiet splendor—who redeem sickness and pain with joy. All across America, good men in putty noses and baggy trousers, following a tradition as old as man's need to touch gently the lives of his fellowman, go into orphanages and children's hospitals, homes for the elderly and for the retarded, and give a part of themselves. Today, as always, clowns and the spirit they represent are as vital to the maintenance of our humanity as the builders and the growers and the governors.
In the folklore of the world is the persistent claim that the heart of a clown is sad, and that all the gladness he provokes is simply a facade for the pain he cannot reveal to the world. In the myth is the kernel of reason: the clown leaves happiness where he goes, and takes misery away with him.
Yet, we cannot suppose there is real truth in the myth. For surely the laugh-makers are blessed: they heal the heart of the world.
To call public attention to the charitable activities of clowns and the wholesome entertainment they provide for all our citizens, the Congress by a joint resolution approved October 8, 1970 (Public Law 91-433), has requested the President to designate the week of August 1 through August 7, 1971, as National Clown Week.
Now, Therefore, I, Richard M. Nixon, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim the week of August 1 through August 7, 1971, as National Clown Week. I invite the Governors of the States and the appropriate officials of other areas under the United States flag to issue similar proclamations.
I urge the people of the United States to recognize the contributions made by clowns in their entertainment at children's hospitals, charitable institutions, institutions for the mentally retarded, and generally helping to lift the spirits and boost the morale of our people.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this second day of August, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred seventy-one, and of the Independence of the United States of America the one hundred ninety-sixth.

Sir Frank Dyson, in full Sir Frank Watson Dyson (born January 8, 1868, Measham, near Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, England—died May 25, 1939, at sea, en route from Australia to England) British astronomer who in 1919 organized observations of stars seen near the Sun during a solar eclipse, which provided evidence supporting Einstein’s prediction in the theory of general relativity of the bending of light in a gravitational field.
In 1894 Dyson became chief assistant at the Royal Greenwich Observatory and was a member of eclipse expeditions to Portugal (1900), Sumatra (1901), and Tunisia (1905). His observations of the corona and chromosphere of the Sun were published in Determination of Wave-Lengths from Spectra Obtained at the Total Solar Eclipses of 1900, 1901, and 1905 (1906). Dyson was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1901, and in 1905 he was appointed Astronomer Royal for Scotland. He returned to Greenwich in 1910 to become the ninth Astronomer Royal of England, and five years later he was knighted. In 1921 he was honoured for his investigations of the distribution and movements of stars and the relationship of these to the structure of the Galaxy. Dyson’s Eclipses of the Sun and Moon (1937) was written with British astronomer Richard van der Riet Woolley.

By virtue of the authority vested in me by section 2 of the joint resolution of Congress approved April 11, 1941, 55 Stat. 133, it is hereby, amended by adding thereto the following paragraphs:
"3. The provisions of paragraph 1 and 2 of this order shall be suspended during any period in which Article VI of the Inter-American Coffee Agreement is inoperative.
"4. The secretary of State shall notify the Secretary of the Treasury whenever Article VI of the Inter-American Coffee Agreement becomes inoperative by reason of action of the Inter-American Coffee Board or by expiration of the existing Inter-American Coffee Agreement."

As the chaplain continues we see the Hammerhead flying in space then cut back to the funeral.
CHAPLAIN'S VOICE: ... of thy justice and punishments in the world to come. Our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on Earth as it is in heaven ...
Cut to McQueen's Hammerhead.
CHAPLAIN'S VOICE: ... Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses ...
McQueen's lidar warps.
CHAPLAIN'S VOICE: ... as we forgive our trespassers, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
Alien fighter comes into view.
CHAPLAIN'S VOICE: ... Amen.
Cut to honour-guard.
MARINE: Honour-guard, atten-hut.
Cut to Hammerhead.
MARINE'S VOICE: Ready - aim - fire.
The Hammerhead fires at the alien fighter. The alien returns fire.
MARINE'S VOICE: Ready - aim - fire.
McQueen and the alien dog-fight.
MARINE'S VOICE: Ready - aim - fire.
McQueen and the alien twist and turn, firing on each other as they try and gain the upper hand.
McQUEEN: This one's for you, Winslow.
McQueen fires a series of missiles at the Chig and destroys it.
CHAPLAIN'S VOICE: O' Lord, we commend to thee the soul of thy servant Kelly ...
Cut back to Winslow's funeral.
CHAPLAIN'S VOICE: ... that having departed from this world she may live with thee. And by the grace of thy merciful love wash away the sins that in human frailty she committed in the conduct of her life. Through Christ, our Lord, Amen.
Winslow's casket is launched into space.
Cut to McQueen's return to the Saratoga. The flight crew work around his cockpit. McQueen gets out. There is blood running from the ear from which the chip was removed. The Wild Cards are there to see him arrive back on board. McQueen walks passed them and leaves the flight deck.
Cut to bar. McQueen has a bottle of scotch and pours himself a drink.
McQUEEN'S VOICE: I know now with certainty who I am. But I'll be damned if I'll ever know the point. And now all I can ask is, who was he? And who was she? And what was the point?
McQueen turns away from the bar and looks out into space. He raises his glass and takes a drink. He takes the bottle and moves away from the bar, closer to the window, pouring himself another drink.
