Memorable quotes for

Training Day (2001)

Jake: You've been planning this all day?

Alonzo Harris: I've been planning this all week, son.

Thinking again overnight one detail became clearer in my mind about the year 1990.

My official records from the United States National Archives, they sent to me three years ago, documents when my separation leave began.

I wrote about how I couldn't recall the precise date I first started work at a civilian job in Greenville South Carolina.

A document from the United States Social Security Administration I received back in the year 2006 got me thinking about that. That document lists the civilian employers I had in the past and which included from the year 1990 up to Microsoft Corporation beginning December 1998.

So the detail that became clearer in my mind last night is consistent with my closer examination of the calendar of the year 1990.

The day 01 April 1990 was a Sunday.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: July 29, 2006

I wrote about March 24th earlier. I remember March 24, back in 1990, was the day I started work for Ketterman's in the Greenville office. Ketterman's was later bought by a company named Information Systems Analysts with my division being something like Information Systems Services, which made it ISA-ISS. The company owner met with us in Greenville, when he bought the company, sometime in 1992, shortly before I transfered with them to Memphis. ISA was based in Alexandria, VA, and the owner was a former U.S. Navy officer. Anyway, I remember March 24th as being the first day at work for Ketterman's and having to go out on a service call and I had to search for the bank because I had just moved to that town and I wasn't really even sure how to get back to my apartment after I got off work that day.

[JOURNAL ARCHIVE 29 July 2006 excerpt ends]

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 9/21/2006 2:15 PM

That’s it. That’s why I worked for that company. That is how these new revelations pop into my head. They usually start off with ‘that’s it.’ As I was watching the shuttle landing and listening to the commentary, it struck me: ISA-ISS. That is the name of a company I worked for in 1992, I guess was the year. I went to work for Ketterman’s Inc. of Dallas in 1990, but that company was bought out by ISA of Alexandria, VA, sometime in 1992. The CEO was a former Navy officer. My division was called ISS. The full name was something similar to Integrated Systems Analyst – Integrated Systems Services. BUT ISS is also International Space Station. I started thinking too that ISA is International Space Agency. I quit ISS to work for UFP. Their name was Universal Financial Products

[JOURNAL ARCHIVE 21 September 2006 excerpt ends]

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 9/21/2006 8:39 PM
It seems important that my work history, earnings document, whatever it’s called, doesn’t list Ketterman’s Inc of Dallas. Instead, it has ISA-ISS listed for the times when I worked for Ketterman’s. I assume that is standard procedure because ISA-ISS bought out Ketterman’s who then ceased to exist. It seems like it is an important clue but I don’t know exactly what it means.

[JOURNAL ARCHIVE 21 September 2006 excerpt ends]

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 9/21/2006 8:39 PM

The detail is reinforced by the fact that universal Financial Products, or U.F.P., is listed as 620 Enterprise Drive. Not sure if Oakbrook, IL, means anything.

The next regular employer is listed as Eagle Business Systems which was in Columbia, SC.

Chalmers: Now let's clear this up. Who exactly are you?

Man: [salutes] Sergeant Seymour Skinner, U.S. Army.

Skinner: It's true. I was in his platoon. They said you were killed on that scouting mission.

Skinner: No, just captured. It's kind of a funny story, really. After five years in a secret P.O.W. camp, I was sold to China for slave labor. And since '77 I've been making sneakers at gunpoint in a sweatshop in Boo-Haun.

Marge: That's not a funny story.

Skinner: Well, I guess you had to be there.

The fictional date setting 2/5/2057 in the 2000 film "Red Planet" is 29601 days after 1/21/1976 and the zip code of Greenville South Carolina is 29601.

Precisely why I would make that association I do not understand. I do "remember" living that time in Greenville after going to work for Ketterman's after getting out of the Navy where I worked for Ketterman's at that First Federal Savings Bank but I feel there would be some other kind of specific reason for that association. There is a reference to NASCAR which makes me think of Charlotte but I don't know.

The American Presidency Project

George Bush

XLI President of the United States: 1989 - 1993

Remarks to the Phillips Academy Board of Trustees in Andover, Massachusetts

November 5, 1989

Thank you all. Excuse the slight delay. I was out there talking to the captain of Andover's victorious football team, Tony Pittman. I don't know whether he came in with us. Is he there? I want to show him off to you guys that came here with me. Small but fast -- [laughter] -- tough. I don't know where he went. Is he coming? Tony, get up here now. I need them to see my excuse for my being late. I don't want to embarrass him. Stay there.

I single him out, not to embarrass the poor guy, which I probably have just done, but to make a point about this school. One of the things that I, at least, got an awful lot out of was the athletic program. And I saw my old mentor, Frank DiClemente, sitting in the front row there. And I thought, my gosh, I haven't even left the place -- he looks just the same as he did back in those highly competitive days.

But I want to thank Headmaster Don McNemar for arranging a wonderful visit -- a fine reunion, if you will. Again, I want to single out the two Congressmen that were here with me, back here, Andy Ireland and Tony Beilenson, standing way in the back there, as enthusiastic as I about the return to Andover Hill. And of course, to the board and to Tim Ireland, who really did a lot of the planning on this and working out the schedule -- old friend. And of course, David Underwood, whom I've known for years, fellow Houstonian, now serving so unselfishly as chairman of this board.

And again, I don't want to miss by failing to emphasize the affection I have for members of the faculty, present and past. We did a little interview a minute ago with not only the editor of the Phillipian but from the Lawrence paper. And I pointed out that those of us who studied here were privileged to be taught by outstanding faculty. And it's still, I'm sure, just exactly that way.

I'm very sorry Barbara's not here. She just didn't feel well -- but she's doing well. And I'm very, very proud of her. And she had been looking forward to this very much.

I was going through the yearbook the other day. It said something about: Captain Bush was a powerful batter at the plate. It's marvelous how a little time takes care of a lot of myths, you know. [Laughter] But, freedom of the press -- we're all for that. [Laughter] And those of you from Washington, I hope you'll note it.

I emphasized in that little interview we had the importance of friendships. Doesn't matter whether you're President of the United States or a senior at Phillips Academy or just beginning here or whatever. Friendships matter. And the friendships you make here last you for the rest of your life, and I'm grateful for that. Some other things don't change. Kindness doesn't change. The education and service that is embodied in the Phillips constitution -- talk about -- it says both goodness and kindness form the noblest character and lay the surest foundation of usefulness to mankind. And many young people have passed through these halls since those words were written. And yet, Andover's mission -- excellence in education -- remains as true in 1989 as it was when President Washington visited Phillips Academy 200 years ago to this very day.

The Andover mission states that education has always been the great equalizer and uplifter. And that, public or private, large or small, the schools of America are precious centers of intellectual challenge and creativity. And yet, they're more than that. For it is in school, as it was for me here at Phillips Academy, that we come to understand real values: the need to help the less fortunate, make ours a more decent, civil world.

As a student, for example, I remember we had in those days the Society of Inquiry, it was called. Community service -- we did drives, sponsored by what was then known as the Society of Inquiry. And today, you have the Blue Key and the Community Service Program. All three reflect service to nation and service to neighbor.

And as a student, too, I learned, as I said, about education through some absolutely outstanding teachers. I don't like to single them out, but I was talking to Don about it. And I think my favorite was Dr. A.B. Darling. He lived right around the corner. We always tried to avoid his house, because you were summoned over there if you did real bad. [Laughter] But I learned from the discipline of his classes, and it's gone on for years and years in this great institution.

Today, as Don observed a few minutes ago, a new generation of teachers are helping to challenge and inspire. Excellence in education -- a belief that we were put on Earth to help others. And back in the early forties, this formed the essence and character of Phillips Academy. And you can still feel its power today. For Phillips has much to be proud of as it enters a brand-new decade. Its curricula has never been more extensive. Its exchange program is broadening its horizons. Its minority recruitment and scholarship programs have brought a new vital diversity to the student body, and keeping Phillips such a special, even wondrous place. A place where we forge friendships for life with faculty, housemasters and ministers, administrators, and yes, our classmates.

Even the Father of our Country was impressed by Phillips Academy. As he wrote his nephew, and Don referred to some of this, in a letter after visiting the community: "Schooling, board, washing, and lodging will not much, if any, I am told, exceed $2 a week for each boy." Now, costs have changed a little since then. [Laughter] Quality has not, and in the capable hands of this headmaster, of this faculty, of the board, it will not.

And so, thank you for ensuring Andover's excellence, making one of America's oldest academies one of America's finest academies. And thank you very much from the bottom of my heart for what has been a joyous occasion, one I shall not forget. And I'll go back to work tomorrow feeling uplifted in knowing that I have the friendships that really make a difference. Thank you very, very much.

Note: The President spoke at 12:01 p.m. in Borden Gymnasium. In his remarks, he referred to Frank DiClemente, faculty member emeritus; and David Underwood, chairman of the board of trustees.

CREDIT CARD AUTOMATIC CURRENCY DISPENSER

Abstract

A currency dispenser automatically delivers a medium of exchange in packets in response to a coded credit card presented thereto. The coded credit card is presented to the currency dispenser and an initial check is made to determine if the card has the proper format. After checking the credit card format, coded information thereon is evaluated to check the user's identity prior to authorizing him to receive cash from the machine. When each of several additional checks of the credit card code have been completed, the old code is removed and substituted with a new code. The new code contains the same information as the old but updated to reflect an additional currency dispensing transaction. Both the original code and the updated code are scrambled in accordance with a changing key. Scrambling the credit card code after each use thereof minimizes the chance of unauthorized use of the currency dispenser. When the checks of the credit card code indicate the user is entitled to receive the amount of currency he has selected, a storage container for the packets of currency transports the required number of packets by a positive feed drive to a cash drawer. The cash drawer opens to a detent position which allows the customer to then move the drawer to a fully open position to remove his currency. Upon release of the cash drawer, it returns to a partially opened position from which it automatically closes after a preset time limit.

He did not become senior class president or a star baseball player like his father, but he did discover his own persona: a cheerleader with an antic streak.

QUOTES

(opening narration)

Narrator: Portrait of a bush-league fuehrer named Peter Vollmer, a sparse little man who feeds off his self-delusions and finds himself perpetually hungry for want of greatness in his diet. And like some goose-stepping predecessors he searches for something to explain his hunger, and to rationalize why a world passes him by without saluting. That something he looks for and finds is in a sewer. In his own twisted and distorted lexicon he calls it faith, strength, truth. But in just a moment Peter Vollmer will ply his trade on another kind of corner, a strange intersection in a shadowland called the Twilight Zone.

Now here’s something interesting I noticed today when I was looking up details on Voyager 1. Pioneer 10 is a predecessor of Voyager 1 having launched on March 2, 1972. It was that March 2nd date that caught my eye. Then I thought about my other theory about being along for the ride with Apollo 11. If I was on that pioneering mission to the Moon in 1969, I was 10 years old at the time Apollo 11 landed. I wrote about something earlier about how Apollo 11 was the mission that first landed on the Moon and I would have been 10 years, 4 months, 17 days old on July 20, 1969.

So then I got to thinking, maybe when Pioneer 10 launched, it was March 3rd for me, as I was out of the country. Then I got to thinking more about the timeline and I started thinking that maybe I was at Oxford at the time. I figure that I started Princeton on 9/2/65, graduated after 5 years in 1970 with a Master’s Degree in Computer Science. I went to Oxford for two years after that and graduated from there in 1972, possibly with a law degree.

Maybe it was psychology I studied while at the USNA. I'm pretty certain I studied law when I was at Oxford earlier. I wanted to say I studied medicine too at Oxford but as soon as I started thinking about writing that, I started thinking that I had studied medicine at Princeton, along with another major subject. I am thinking that Princeton is where I studied medicine because part of my training included service treating wounded soldiers in Vietnam, among the other roles I had in Vietnam. I was primarily focused on defensive operations, such as SAM suppression while flying jets and recon with the SEAL's on the ground.
