Today is 12/25/2023

by me, Kerry Burgess, 12/25/2023 6:14 PM

I am vaguely aware that I have before today glanced at the title "Ixion" on Steam

But wasn't interested enough in it before today to give it any serious consideration

Today that changes

I am still looking for a worthy substitute to my favorite computer-game "Space Engineers" and secondly, "Satisfactory"

"Occupy Mars" is neat but I find it, still in Early Access", too "buggy" for me, and really, becomes too tedious and doesn't really offer much in terms of the long-term, that I can ascertain. Most of what drives me in that game is setting up the infrastructure to manufacture packs of food. Then I easily make hundreds of food packs and I think to myself that playing it under the more difficult settings just makes the tedium more difficult. It's a neat game but becomes tedious too soon.

"Ixion" caused me to look at it more indepth today because - for one reason, the reduced price - and secondly because it's got an interstellar feature.

What hasn't sold me yet is the capability for expansion of the spacecraft. I like worlds that have a lot of room to spread out on

I had a post worked up about the calendar-day 12/24/2023 but I lost interest in finishing it. I like the content I developed but I lost interest in punching it out on here.

I post this stuff because I remain absolutely certain there is some sort of truth here that I am supposed to find

THAT EVERY DAY since the year 2006 - when this all started for me - was planned and developed and executed FOR THE SINGLE PURPOSE of what I continue trying to find

I write about "broadcasting silly stuff into the wilderness" and then I read days later that the USA uncrewed spacecraft Voyager 1 is doing the same at the same time I'm writing that completely unaware

by me, Kerry Burgess, 12/25/2023 8:42 PM

The thing about "Occupy Mars: The Game" on Steam is that today - this day 12/25/2023 - is the first time I have encountered meteorites during gameplay

Random? Coincidental? By design?

I have no way of knowing.

All I can think about is my original work code pattern

USA congress should make it law that anyone uttering "A.I." in public should have to follow it with "squawk! A.I. squawk!"

You must be a world-class imbecile to think there is anything "artifically intelligent" about computer programs.

It's popular in mainstream-media because marketing buzzwords is all those parrots have

Today's "A.I." - SQUAWK! - is nothing more than the computer-viruses and computer-worms of software programs from 20 years ago

Just because *you* initiate a computer-app that *you* allow access to your email contacts list and then sends - unintended by *you* - "ILOVEYOU" messages to all of those contacts, that does not mean the computer program can "learn" as we humans can learn because of comprehension and perception. Machines have neither and never will, no matter how intelligent the software-programmers.

So, today, I'm thinking about how random it could be, these observations I've made this calendar-day 12/25/2023

What I'm not sure about is if today is the farthest I've ever made it in a single game instance of "Occupy Mars". I've played it before but I usually don't progress that far before getting bored and then later starting over with another instance. Today, I made it to day 12 and today is the first time I've seen meteorites.

I quit because today - BECAUSE of the meteorites - is the first time I've built the anti-meteoryte structure in the game. The structure itself is easy enough but the rockets seem needlessly complicated. And then it crashed my game and I had to End Task.

The rockets seem needlessly complicated but then again, this isn't the same type of other "cookie-cutter" games I've played. Complicated is what makes it challenging.

And today - this day 12/25/2023 - is the first time I was challenged with loading rockets into the anti-meteorite system. And failed.

Also, my notes prove that today - this day 12/25/2023 - is the *first* time I learned how to repair the circuit boards.

Now that I know - by figuring it out for myself - how it works then I get it right every time.

But that didn't happen first until *today*. And *that* was completely, absolutely 100% random. Could have happened any time before today. But nope, I chose to make it happen *today*. Because of conscious decisions by me

BALOK [Off Camera]: No further communication will be accepted. If there is the slightest hostile move, your vessel will be destroyed immediately.

SPOCK: They're shutting off some of our systems, Captain. Brilliant. Extremely sophisticated in their methods.

KIRK: Does the recorder marker have this on its tapes?

SPOCK: Enough to warn other Earth ships.

KIRK: Mister Bailey, dispatch recorder marker. Mister Bailey?

BAILEY: Recorder marker dispatched, sir.

SPOCK: Marker on course. Heading back the way we (big bang)

BALOK: Your recorder marker has been destroyed. You have been examined. Your ship must be destroyed. We make assumption you have a deity or deities or some such beliefs which comfort you.

Rock #1: It has been a long waiting.

Rock #2: A long waiting but over now, and time to invade the bodies of these things called human beings. Someone is present. Is it safe for us to communicate?

Rock #1: Only our own kind have the power to hear us.

Rock #2: Looking at him, I'm filled with apprehension. Can the fragile corpus of these Earthlings support our consuming energies?

Rock #1: Some will withstand body invasion. Others will deteriorate. We must choose the hardiest specimens.

Plot

In the year 2049, the mobile station Tiqqun created by the DOLOS Aerospace Engineering Corporation performs a test run of their VOHLE engine, developed for interstellar travel. However, the VOHLE engine's activation shatters the Moon, resulting in the "Lunaclysm" that devastates Earth. In the ensuing chaos, the United Nations declares DOLOS an "enemy of humanity". The Tiqqun returns an unknown amount of time later, finding Earth completely uninhabitable. Gathering what resources they could find (including survivors stored in cryonic stasis), the Tiqqun discovers that DOLOS dispatched another ship, the Protagoras, to a habitable exoplanet codenamed "Remus", which would be a new home for the survivors of Earth. The crew also discovers "IXION", a more stable VOHLE engine, at a DOLOS facility on Jupiter, and installs it aboard the Tiqqun.

Stargate: Universe

"Life"

TV-series season 1 episode 9, 11/20/2009

(from internet transcript)

YOUNG: Lieutenant, you're next up to use the stones to visit Earth.

SCOTT: Uh, it's all right, sir, I can wait.

YOUNG: But you've been waiting. Take your turn. Wray'll be going too.

SCOTT (a little reluctantly): All right. All right, thanks.

KINO VISION. Greer and his team reach another closed door. Greer looks round to the others.

RUSH (over radio): Go ahead.

(Greer activates the door controls and they slide open to reveal what appears to be a lab. In the centre of a room is a large chair. To viewers of earlier incarnations of the “Stargate” series, it looks like an older version of the Weapons Control Chair.)

MARINE: What the hell is this?

GREER (cheerfully): Hey! Looks like we've found the dentist's office!

(In the Control Room, Rush - who appears to be multi-tasking and looking at information on a laptop computer - looks across to the Kino screen just as the scientist in Greer's team goes over to a console in the room and pushes a button on it. Lights come on around the room. On the Chair, clamps spring out into positions where - if someone were sitting in it - they would trap the person's wrists and ankles. At the same time, a device swings over the top of the headrest into a position where - again, if someone were sitting there - it would clamp around the person's head. Small prongs come out of the clamp which would press into the sides of the person's skull. Rush stares at the footage for a moment, then activates his radio and speaks sternly into it.)

RUSH: Don't touch anything. Leave it! I'm on my way.

Stargate: Universe

"Life"

TV-series season 1 episode 9, 11/20/2009

(from internet transcript)

DESTINY. Young has joined Rush in the room with the Chair. Rush has apparently had some time with the Chair and worked out what it is.

YOUNG: Neural interface?

RUSH: A precursor to an Ancient device SG-1 discovered several years ago. A repository of knowledge that can be literally downloaded into one's mind.

YOUNG: And you think this is one of those things?

RUSH: Within that knowledge may be the master code to unlock the ship's core systems: navigation, propulsion ...

YOUNG: You're sure?

RUSH: Well, we can't be certain ‘til someone actually sits in the Chair.

GREER: It looks like it holds you down and shoots bolts into your head.

RUSH: These are merely electrodes allowing the transfer of data.

YOUNG: Do you know what a device like this did to General O'Neill?

RUSH: The sheer amount of information overwhelmed him, yes.

YOUNG: It damn near killed him, is what it did.

RUSH: It led to incredible discoveries.

YOUNG: And it damn near killed him. In fact, the only thing we know for sure is an Ancient device like this is pretty much a death sentence. Nobody sits in this thing.

(He turns to Greer.)

YOUNG: I want guard detail posted.

RUSH: So what are we to do, Colonel? Just ignore what this Chair can do?

YOUNG: I'm not telling you to ignore it. I'm telling you to study it without sitting in it.

RUSH: Look, Colonel, this pre-dates those found in the Milky Way. I'd be willing to bet the effects are far less severe.

(Young walks closer to him.)

YOUNG: Would you bet your own life?

(Rush looks away.)

YOUNG: So you're fine as long as someone else volunteers.

Stargate: Universe

"Life"

TV-series season 1 episode 9, 11/20/2009

(from internet transcript)

In the exercise room, Spencer is leading a group of crew members in vigorous exercise. He counts off the jumps they're doing.

SPENCER: Thirty-five! Thirty-six! Thirty-seven! Thirty-eight! Thirty-nine ...

(Later, they're doing a sequence of a squat thrust followed by standing up and leaping into the air with arms raised before dropping to do another squat thrust. Spencer counts them through the thrust and jump.)

SPENCER: One-two-three, eighteen; one-two-three, nineteen ...

(Later they're doing some kind of relay race: they've been broken into four teams and one member from each team is running back and forth across the room, touching a spot on the floor at each end before turning and running back. Spencer yells at them angrily.)

SPENCER: Move it, move it! Faster, come on, people, faster! Faster, Franklin, move it! You're pathetic, Franklin, you know that?

(Franklin reaches one end of the room and touches the floor. He stops, exhausted and unable to turn. Spencer storms over to him and points back to the other side of the room.)

SPENCER: Go again! Again, Franklin! Move that fat ass!

(Doubled over and gasping for breath, Franklin vomits onto the floor.)

SPENCER: You're pathetic! Go again!

Stargate: Universe

"Life"

TV-series season 1 episode 9, 11/20/2009

(from internet transcript)

DESTINY. In the Control Room, Adam Brody is talking with Lisa and Volker. They're discussing Young's decision that nobody can use the Chair.

BRODY: If someone wants to volunteer to sit in it, why won't he let ‘em?

PARK: He's trying to protect us.

BRODY: Oh, please!

VOLKER: It's politics. He resists at first, comes round eventually, gives it the green light and if it works he's the big hero; and if it doesn't, well ...

(He looks around at Rush who has been standing nearby, taking no part in the discussion.)

VOLKER: ... you get to take the blame.

RUSH (quietly): Yes.

Stargate: Universe

"Life"

TV-series season 1 episode 9, 11/20/2009

(from internet transcript)

DESTINY. Rush is walking along a corridor, fiddling with his broken spectacles. T.J. catches up to him.

JOHANSEN: Hey, Doctor Rush. You got a sec?

RUSH (not looking up or slowing down): No.

JOHANSEN: I'm doing psych evaluations for the entire crew.

RUSH: No thank you.

JOHANSEN: Colonel Young ordered them. It's just a talk, see how you're doing, give you a chance to voice any problems or frustrations.

(Rush walks ahead of her and reaches a doorway. Stepping over the threshold, he turns back to her.)

RUSH: Well, I'm fine. No problems, no complaints. Is that it?

(Smiling at her and not giving her a chance to answer, he hits the wall panel and the doors slide closed between the two of them.)

JOHANSEN: Yeah(!)

Stargate: Universe

"Life"

TV-series season 1 episode 9, 11/20/2009

(from internet transcript)

YOUNG (interrupting): Again with the Chair.

RUSH: Yes, the Chair! It could be our salvation ...

YOUNG (interrupting furiously): And it could kill somebody!

RUSH (angrily): A sacrifice that could save the lives of everyone else on this ship!

(Young walks to the closed doors of the room and slams his hand against the wall panel. The doors slide open. Young turns back and gets right into Rush's face.)

YOUNG (calmly): I'm not stopping you, Rush. Go, sit. Be my guest.

(Rush stares at him for a moment, then his face crumples and he lowers his eyes and turns away.)

YOUNG: That's what I thought.

(Giving Rush a contemptuous look, he walks away. Rush grimaces.)

Star Trek Generations (1994)

KIRK: Tractor beam! Tractor beam.

HARRIMAN: We don't have a tractor beam.

KIRK: You left Spacedock without a tractor beam?

HARRIMAN: It won't be installed until Tuesday. ...Ensign Sulu, try generating a subspace field around the ships. That might break them free.

DEMORA: There's too much quantum interference, Captain.

HARRIMAN: What about... What about venting plasma from the warp nacelles? That might disrupt the ribbon's hold on the ships.

NAVIGATOR: Aye sir. ...Releasing drive-plasma. ...It's not having any effect, sir. I think the ribbon's hold...

DEMORA: Sir! The starboard vessel's hull is collapsing...

CHEKOV: How many people were aboard that ship?

DEMORA: Two hundred sixty-five.

HARRIMAN: Captain Kirk, ...I would appreciate any suggestions you might have.

KIRK: First ...move us within transporter range and beam those people aboard the Enterprise.

HARRIMAN: What about the gravimetric distortions? They'll tear us apart.

KIRK: Risk is part of the game if you want to sit in that chair.

HARRIMAN: Helm, close to within transporter range.

KIRK: And second, ...turn that damned thing off.

Professor of astrophysics filmed for public television documentary

By JILL FLAXMAN

Astrophysics professor Neil Tyson spent yesterday afternoon "rolling around with the team." Not the science team, but the wrestling team. A wrestler during his undergraduate days at Harvard, Tyson suited up with Princeton's wrestlers to perform for a documentary team's camera. Tyson was the sole professor from Princeton to be profiled in a Public Broadcasting System documentary that will be aired next fall.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

ALIEN MACHINE VOICE: (unintelligible)

ILIA PROBE: Kirk unit, V'Ger awaits the information.

KIRK: Enterprise, order up the ship's computer library of records, on the late twentieth-century NASA probe, Voyager VI.

[Enterprise bridge]

KIRK (on intercom): We want the old NASA code signal that instructs the probe to transmit its data.

[Voyager VI platform]

KIRK: ...and fast, Uhura, fast!

UHURA (on intercom): Aye sir.

DECKER: That's what it's been signalling, its readiness to transmit its information.

KIRK: And there's no one on Earth who could recognise the old signal and send a response.

McCOY: The Creator does not answer.
