Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

(from internet transcript)

Captain's log, stardate 7414.1. Our best estimates place us some four hours from Earth. No significant progress thus far reviving Ilia memory patterns within the alien probe. This remains our only means of contact with our captor.

[Kirk's quarters]

DECKER (on viewscreen): All these vessels were called 'Enterprise'.

[Enterprise recreation deck]

DECKER: The carbon units use this area for recreation. ...This is one of the games. ...What type of recreation does the crew aboard your vessel enjoy?

ILIA PROBE: The words 'recreation' and 'enjoy' have no meaning to my programming.

DECKER: Ilia enjoyed this game, ...she nearly always won.

[Kirk's quarters]

McCOY: Good! He's using audial-visual association.

History of the Internet

From Wikipedia

The history of the Internet has its origin in the efforts of scientists and engineers to build and interconnect computer networks. The Internet Protocol Suite, the set of rules used to communicate between networks and devices on the Internet, arose from research and development in the United States

History of the Internet

From Wikipedia

Foundations

Precursors

Telegraphy

The practice of transmitting messages between two different places through an electromagnetic medium dates back to the electrical telegraph in the late 19th century, which was the first fully digital communication system. Radiotelegraphy began to be used commercially in the early 20th century. Telex became an operational teleprinter service in the 1930s. Such systems were limited to point-to-point communication between two end devices.

History of the Internet

From Wikipedia

In 1971, he began planning the network to explore alternatives to the early ARPANET design and to support internetworking research. First demonstrated in 1973, it was the first network to implement the end-to-end principle conceived by Donald Davies and make the hosts responsible for reliable delivery of data, rather than the network itself, using unreliable datagrams. Concepts implemented in this network influenced TCP/IP architecture.

History of the Internet

From Wikipedia

In 1979, CompuServe became the first service to offer electronic mail capabilities and technical support to personal computer users. The company broke new ground again in 1980 as the first to offer real-time chat with its CB Simulator. Other major dial-in networks were America Online (AOL) and Prodigy that also provided communications, content, and entertainment features. Many bulletin board system (BBS) networks also provided on-line access, such as FidoNet which was popular amongst hobbyist computer users, many of them hackers and amateur radio operators.

History of the Internet

From Wikipedia

1973–1989: Merging the networks and creating the Internet

With the role of the network reduced to a core of functionality, it became possible to exchange traffic with other networks independently from their detailed characteristics, thereby solving the fundamental problems of internetworking.

History of the Internet

From Wikipedia

NASA developed the TCP/IP based NASA Science Network (NSN) in the mid-1980s, connecting space scientists to data and information stored anywhere in the world. In 1989, the DECnet-based Space Physics Analysis Network (SPAN) and the TCP/IP-based NASA Science Network (NSN) were brought together at NASA Ames Research Center creating the first multiprotocol wide area network called the NASA Science Internet, or NSI. NSI was established to provide a totally integrated communications infrastructure to the NASA scientific community for the advancement of earth, space and life sciences. As a high-speed, multiprotocol, international network, NSI provided connectivity to over 20,000 scientists across all seven continents.

History of the Internet

From Wikipedia

Transition towards the Internet

The term "internet" was reflected in the first RFC published on the TCP protocol (RFC 675: Internet Transmission Control Program, December 1974) as a short form of internetworking, when the two terms were used interchangeably. In general, an internet was a collection of networks linked by a common protocol. In the time period when the ARPANET was connected to the newly formed NSFNET project in the late 1980s, the term was used as the name of the network, Internet, being the large and global TCP/IP network.

Opening the Internet and the fiber optic backbone to corporate and consumers increased demand for network capacity.

History of the World Wide Web

From Wikipedia

Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web while working at CERN in 1989. He proposed a "universal linked information system" using several concepts and technologies, the most fundamental of which was the connections that existed between information. He developed the first web server, the first web browser, and a document formatting protocol, called Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). After publishing the markup language in 1991, and releasing the browser source code for public use in 1993, many other web browsers were soon developed, with Marc Andreessen's Mosaic (later Netscape Navigator), being particularly easy to use and install, and often credited with sparking the Internet boom of the 1990s. It was a graphical browser which ran on several popular office and home computers, bringing multimedia content to non-technical users by including images and text on the same page.

History of the World Wide Web

From Wikipedia

Websites for use by the general public began to emerge in 1993-94. This spurred competition in server and browser software, highlighted in the Browser wars which was initially dominated by Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer. Following the complete removal of commercial restrictions on Internet use by 1995, commercialization of the Web amidst macroeconomic factors led to the dot-com boom and bust in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Communications Technology Satellite

From Wikipedia

The Communications Technology Satellite (CTS), known as Hermes, was an experimental high-power direct broadcast communications satellite. It was a joint effort of Canadian Department of Communications, who designed and built the satellite, NASA who tested, launched and operated the satellite, and European Space Agency (ESA) who provided the 1200 watts solar panels and other devices. The three agencies shared the satellite and the data from the experiments.

Although the launch of the ATS-6 spacecraft in 1974 marked the end of NASA's program of experimental communications satellites. NASA participated in a Canadian satellite venture known initially as "Cooperative Applications Satellite-C" and renamed Hermes. This joint effort involved NASA and the Canadian Department of Communications. NASA's Lewis Research Center provided the satellite's high-power communications payload. Canada designed and built the spacecraft; NASA tested, launched, and operated it. Also, the European Space Agency provided one of the low-power traveling-wave tubes and other equipment. Hermes was launched 17 January 1976 and operated until October 1979.

Communications Technology Satellite

From Wikipedia

It was launched on 17 January 1976, from Cape Canaveral in Florida by a Delta 2914 rocket. Designed for a two-year mission it was the basis of experiments past its intended lifetime until October 1979 when a system failure broke all contacts with it.

Communications Technology Satellite

From Wikipedia

Satellite

The satellite was meant to test the practical aspects of a high powered satellite using large antennas beaming television signals directly to homes equipped with small antennas, and two-way communications with mobile stations.

Communications Technology Satellite

From Wikipedia

The CTS satellite also made history as being the first communications satellite used for video art, by artist Keith Sonnier in 1977 for his 2-part piece titled "Send/Receive Satellite Network", in which video and character generator text and graphics were fed over the satellite between the East and West Coasts of the United States. This marked the first time that satellite communication technology was used for video art. NASA cooperated with Sonnier's project and provided a satellite uplink truck for access to the CTS satellite. The piece was produced in two parts, "Phase I", which was a critique of satellite technology and whether it would become accessible to the public rather than the commercial and military purposes for the technology at that time, using feeds sent over the satellite by the artist and other participants

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

(from internet transcript)

ILIA PROBE: You are the Kirk unit. You will assist me. I've been programmed by V'Ger to observe and record normal functioning of the carbon-based units infesting U.S.S. Enterprise.

McCOY: Jim, what's going on?

KIRK: Tricorder. ...Who is ...'V'Ger'?

ILIA PROBE: V'Ger is that which has programmed me.

KIRK: Is V'Ger the name of the captain of the alien vessel?

McCOY: Jim, this is a mechanism!

SPOCK: A probe, Captain. No doubt a sensor-transceiver combination, recording everything we say and do.

I read further in that article and I was suddenly reminded of a couple sleeping-dreams from last night

Those of you not following along at home will not immediately recognize my incontrovertible genius

After the first vivid-vision, I awoke for a few moments and composed in my head a note I thought to myself that I might post later in the day, this day today

My note was simply to express again the fact that my sleeping-dreams are sometimes more interesting and entertaining that anything I see on tv or read in books

What's compelling to me is that the vivid dreams seem to have no basis for earlier influence during my waking hours

Nothing I see in my sleep-visions is similar to anything I can remember while awake and I have the type of memory that would inform me of that fact.

Before falling asleep again, I was thinking that I wish I could subscribe to that type of regular entertainment as easily and conveniently as Hulu, and my sleeping-dreams are vastly more entertaining and interesting

Just cannot go back and watch again - and *experience* - those past instances

Must have been a few hours later of restless sleep that I awoke from that second instance

Common sort of recurring-dream I have and as always, details and variations vary.

I walked by the elevator and decided not to use it.

People exiting the elevator looked at me warily.

(from internet transcript)

ILIA PROBE: V'Ger!

[Voyager VI platform]

KIRK: V-G-E-R ...V-O-Y-A-G-E-R ...Voyager! ...Voyager VI?

DECKER: NASA. National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Jim, this was launched more than three hundred years ago.

KIRK: Voyager series, designed to collect data and transmit it back to Earth.

DECKER: Voyager VI ...disappeared into what they used to call a black hole.

KIRK: It must have emerged sometime on the far side of the Galaxy and fell into the machine's planet's gravitational field.

SPOCK: The machine inhabiters found it to be one of their own kind, primitive yet kindred. They discovered its simple twentieth-century programming. Collect all data possible.

DECKER: Learn all that is learnable. Return that information to its Creator.

SPOCK: Precisely, Mister Decker, the machines interpreted it literally.

SPOCK: They built this entire vessel so that Voyager could fulfil it's programming.

KIRK: And on its journey back it amassed so much knowledge, it achieved consciousness itself. It became a living thing.

ALIEN MACHINE VOICE: (unintelligible)

ILIA PROBE: Kirk unit, V'Ger awaits the information.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

(from internet transcript)

DECKER: That's what it's been signalling, its readiness to transmit its information.

KIRK: And there's no one on Earth who could recognise the old signal and send a response.

McCOY: The Creator does not answer.

KIRK: V'Ger, ...V'Ger, ...V'Ger, ...we are the Creator.

ILIA PROBE: That is not possible. Carbon units are not true lifeforms.

KIRK: We will prove it. We will make it possible for you to complete your programming. Only the Creator could accomplish that. ...Enterprise?

[Enterprise bridge]

UHURA: We have just received the response code, Captain.

[Voyager VI platform]

KIRK: Set the Enterprise transmitter on appropriate frequency, and transmit the code now.

UHURA (on intercom): Transmitting.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

(from internet transcript)

SPOCK: Voyager is not transmitting, Captain, because it did not receive the final sequence.

McCOY: Jim, we're down to ten minutes.

KIRK: Enterprise, stand by. The antenna leads are melted away.

SPOCK: Yes Captain, just now. By V'Ger itself.

KIRK: Why?

SPOCK: To prevent reception.

KIRK: Of course.

DECKER: To bring the Creator here, to finish transmitting the code in person, ...to touch the Creator.

McCOY: To capture God! V'Ger's going to be in for one hell of a disappointment.

SPOCK: Perhaps not. ...Captain, ...V'Ger must evolve. Its knowledge has reached the limits of this universe and it must evolve. What it requires of its God, Doctor is the answer to its question, 'Is there nothing more?

McCOY: What more is there than the universe, Spock?

DECKER: Other, dimensions, higher levels of beings.

SPOCK: The existence of which cannot be proved logically, therefore V'Ger is incapable of believing in them.

KIRK: What V'Ger needs in order to evolve is a human quality. Our capacity to leap beyond logic.

DECKER: And joining with its Creator might accomplish that.

McCOY: You mean that this machine wants to physically join with a human? Is that possible?

DECKER: Let' find out.

KIRK: Decker!

DECKER: I'm gonna key the sequence through the ground-test computer.

McCOY: Decker! You don't know what that will do to you.

DECKER: Yes, I do, Doctor.

KIRK: Decker, don't!

DECKER: Jim, I want this. As much as you wanted the Enterprise, I want this.

(the 'Ilia probe' merges into the incandescent cloud enveloping Decker)

[Enterprise bridge]

SULU: Captain.

KIRK: Spock! Did we just see the beginnings of a new lifeform?

SPOCK: Yes, Captain, we witnessed a birth. Possibly a next step in our evolution.

KIRK: I wonder.

Star Trek - "Metamorphosis" - tv-series Season 2 Episode 9, 11/10/1967

Episode Summary

When their shuttle is diverted to a planetoid, Kirk, Spock, and McCoy encounter Earth's Warp Drive pioneer, Zefram Cochrane, who appears to have survived there alone for 150 years.

(from internet transcript)

KIRK: I intend to do whatever's necessary to get us off this planet and Commissioner Hedford to the hospital. If the Companion stands in the way, then we push it out of the way. Clear, Spock?

SPOCK: Quite clear, Captain.

KIRK: Very well. You have your orders. (Spock leaves) Mister Cochrane, if you left here, what would happen to you?

COCHRANE: I'd begin to age again, normally.

KIRK: Do you want to leave here?

Zefram COCHRANE: Believe me, Captain, immortality consists largely of boredom.

The Web at 25: Revisiting Tim Berners-Lee's Amazing Proposal

BY HARRY MCCRACKEN MARCH 12, 2014 8:35 AM EDT

On March 12, 1989, British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee distributed a document to his colleagues at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, in Geneva. His unprepossessing title, "Information Management: A Proposal," indicates that he wasn’t trying to change the world. He just knew that CERN had vast quantities of valuable information stored all over the place, and that it would be easier to find if it were all linked together in a way that made it accessible from any computer. So — returning to concepts he had started exploring in 1980 during an earlier tour of duty at CERN — he recommended creating a networked hypertext system to manage all that knowledge.

Radio Address to the Nation on Education

August 24, 1985

My fellow Americans:

As summer draws to a close our thoughts naturally turn to the coming school year. Few things could be more central to the life and health of our nation than the education of our children. Our schools hold the future of America in their hands. They will decide whether that future is enlightened, free, and informed, or shrouded in the darkness of ignorance.

Lifetime Achievement Award: Tim Berners-Lee

By Marcus Law

September 01, 2023

The inventor of the World Wide Web and one of Time Magazine’s ‘100 Most Important People of the 20th Century’, Sir Tim Berners-Lee is one of the most influential figures in the technology world.

In 1980, Berners-Lee joined CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, where he worked as a software engineer. It was here, in 1989, that he formulated the blueprint for the World Wide Web.

On March 12, 1989, Berners-Lee drafted a proposal titled "Information Management: A Proposal," outlining the fundamental concepts of the World Wide Web. This proposal introduced the ideas of hypertext, URLs, and HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol), which form the backbone of the web as we know it today.. This document outlined the idea of a global hypertext system that could easily connect and access information through linked documents. This proposal laid the foundation for what we now know as the World Wide Web.

“Most of the technology involved in the web, like the hypertext, like the Internet, multifont text objects, had all been designed already,” Berners-Lee described in an interview with The American Academy of Achievement. “I just had to put them together. It was a step of generalising, going to a higher level of abstraction, thinking about all the documentation systems out there as being possibly part of a larger imaginary documentation system. But then the engineering was fairly straightforward.

“It was designed in order to make it possible to get at documentation and in order to be able to get people — students working with me, contributing to the project, for example — to be able to come in and link in their ideas, so that we wouldn’t lose it all if we didn’t debrief them before they left. Really, it was designed to be a collaborative workspace for people to design on a system together.”

In addition to his vision for the World Wide Web, Berners-Lee developed the first web browser, WorldWideWeb, in 1990. This browser allowed users to access information stored on various servers by navigating through hyperlinks. To encourage others to adopt his groundbreaking technologies, Berners-Lee made them freely available, setting the stage for an open and collaborative internet environment. In 1991, he posted the first web page ever, providing a platform for people to access information on the nascent web.

Today, Berners-Lee is the co-founder and CTO of Inrupt.com, a tech start-up which uses, promotes and helps develop the open source Solid platform. Solid aims to give people control and agency over their data, questioning many assumptions about how the web has to work.

Solid technically is a new level of standard at the web layer, which adds things never put into the original spec, such as global single sign-on, universal access control, and a universal data API so that any app can store data in any storage place. Socially Solid is a movement away from much of the issues with the current WWW, and toward a world in which users are in control, and empowered by large amounts of data, private, shared, and public.

Berners-Lee is the Founder and Director of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the international standards forum for technical development of the Web, and the Web Foundation whose mission is that the World Wide Web serves Humanity. He co-founded and is President of the Open Data Institute in London.

He is also a Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the Computer Science and AI Lab ("CSAIL”) where his research group works to re-decentralize the web.

In 2004, Berners-Lee was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to the global development of the internet.

The idea floated out there for a while before it became reality, at CERN or anywhere else, but what Berners-Lee was proposing came to be known as the World Wide Web.

Several other early dates in web history matter as much as this one does. On November 12, 1990, for instance, Berners-Lee and a colleague, Robert Cailliau, returned to the idea from the 1989 document with a meatier proposal that coined the name "WorldWideWeb." By December 25, they had the WorldWideWeb software up and running at CERN in its most basic form. On August 6, 1991, people outside of CERN got access to the web as a public Internet service for the first time.

Even then, the web was a text-only service that didn’t bear that much resemblance to the one that became a phenomenon a few years later. Marc Andreessen and Eric Bina’s NCSA Mosaic, announced on January 23, 1993, made the web fully graphical; once that happened, it started to catch on, fast.

UHURA: Yes.

SCOTT: Aye.

KIRK: When we first materialised.

SCOTT: I did.

KIRK: It happened twice. First we were in our own transporter chamber, then we faded, and then when we finally materialised, we were here. Wherever this is.

SCOTT: Captain, the transporter chief mentioned a surge of power. The transporter lock might have been affected by the ion storm and we just materialised somewhere else.

KIRK: Yes, here. Not our universe, not our ship. Something parallel. A parallel universe co-existing with ours on another dimensional plane. Everything's duplicated, almost. Another Enterprise. Spock with a beard.

KIRK: Then our counterparts must have been transporting up at the exact same time. Similar storms on both universes disrupted the circuits. We're here, and they're on our Enterprise. Probably asking the same questions. Are we in another universe, and if so, how do we get back to our own? They'll use the computer, and we have to.

MCCOY: What about the Halkans? We can't let them be destroyed.

KIRK: Scotty, can you buy me some time. Get below and short out the main phaser couplings. They'll think the storm blew the stand-by circuits.

SCOTT: Aye, sir.

KIRK: Then get on this technology. It's all we have to work with if we want to get back home. The intercom may be monitored. Use your communicators for private messages. Subfrequency and scramble.
