Star Trek Into Darkness – review

JJ Abrams's follow-up to his 2009 Star Trek film is an astute, if more world-weary, take on the sci-fi legend

Andrew Pulver

The Guardian, Tuesday 30 April 2013

Director JJ Abrams has followed up his sensational 2009 Star Trek reboot with a sparkling 3D sequel.

Star Trek Into Darkness

Production year: 2013

Directors: JJ Abrams

Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Chris Pine , Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana

The core of the earlier film is present and correct: Chris Pine as the infeasibly handsome junior Kirk; Zachary Quinto as the fringed logician Spock; Zoe Saldana – her status subtly enhanced after her leading role in James Cameron's Avatar – as the lissom Lt Uhuru; Karl Urban as grandstanding medical officer Bones; and Britain's own Simon Pegg as engine-room supremo Scotty, gamely approximating a Scottish accent about half the time.

Abrams also maintains the glistening, visuals of his earlier film; Into Darkness is slathered in so much lens flare it looks like a Kylie Minogue video. And the flashes of crackling, knowing comedy have been retained, punctuating the shuddering fight scenes and chase sequences that are the very currency of the action blockbuster.

The film picks up shortly after its predecessor left off: Kirk is firmly installed in the Enterprise chair, Spock his first officer, and a mission is in progress. Abrams orchestrates an opening scene that mixes all the above mentioned ingredients in a 100 proof cocktail, designed to get the audience instantly drunk.

Still burdened by the destruction of Vulcan, Spock is attempting to prevent a planet's incineration by a giant volcano; Kirk flouts the Starfleet prime directive by allowing the primitive inhabitants to clap eyes on the USS Enterprise as it rises from the seabed to deliver Spock from the point of death.

This conflict between military regulation and personal loyalty is allowed to run through the story: it becomes a wedge driven in the overt Kirk-Spock bromance that was such an entertaining feature of the first film. After Spock sends in an official report that exposes Kirk's fibbing, the rupture is worthy of a tycoon's divorce: Kirk, furious, is deprived of his command, while Spock is transferred elsewhere. But they can't stay mad at each other for long, and fortunately a murderous cataclysm erupts that has the happy effect of reuniting them. Sherlock himself, Benedict Cumberbatch, essays the latest in a long line of British supervillains as he arrives, seemingly out of nowhere, to lay waste to a Starfleet base in future London, and follows it up with his own sequel, devastating a military conference in San Francisco. Within seconds, it would seem, Kirk and Spock are reinstalled on the Enterprise bridge, vowing to take Cumberbatch down.

At this point it's necessary to draw a veil over the plot's subsequent revelations, though plenty of rumours have been swirling as to how this Star Trek film – the 12th, incredibly – locks together with a much earlier entry in the sequence. Suffice to say that it's not actually all that interesting: one supervillain, these days, is very much like another, whatever their superficial attributes are. The real grit is provided, as ever, by the emotional politics, always Star Trek's strength. Abrams threw everyone a curveball by getting Spock and Uhuru together in the first film

Spock: We must gather with the rest of Starfleet... to balance the terms of the next engagement!

James T. Kirk: There won't BE a next engagement! By the time we've "gathered," it'll be too late! But you say he's from the future - knows what's gonna happen? - then the logical thing is to be unpredictable!

Spock: You're assuming that Nero knows how events are predicted to unfold. The contrary, Nero's very presence has altered the flow of history, beginning with the attack on the U.S.S. Kelvin, culminating in the events of today, thereby creating an entire new chain of incidents that cannot be anticipated by either party.

Lt. Nyota Uhura: An alternate reality.

Spock: Precisely. Whatever our lives might have been, if the time continuum was disrupted, our destinies have changed.

SEATTLE (F-U Wire) - Microsoft Corporation announces plans to expand its historic outpost of insurrection in Bellevue, Washington. The City Of Bellevue welcomes the insurgency despite that Microsoft Corporation is actively working to overthrow the constitutional form of government in America.

City of Bellevue Mayor Grant Degginger admits that hundreds more Americans will be killed by Microsoft Corporation-sponsored terrorism, but “Hey, Microsoft is giving me a free Lexus to look the other way. Who can argue with that? The covert federal agent we tried to murder only wanted to give us a prison term for providing material support to terrorists.”

When informed that over 99% of the employees of Microsoft Corporation were going to be charged - at a minimum - with providing material support to terrorists, they exclaimed a collective “Wow.”

Before Verona, I was living at Oakwood. I lived at Verona in 1999 and possibility the first month or two of 2000, although I’m not sure about 2000. I know that I lived at Verona the summer of 2000 and moved out in November 2000 after less than a full year. When I was at Oakwood, for some reason, I was talking with a woman online about building furniture. I also remember defending Martha Stewart for some reason I didn’t understand. But I also wonder about this reference to a British phrase, in the sense that in my mind, Thomas Ray wasn’t home.

I don't sense that I have a problem with that. I would wonder how that was known though, assuming the association was deliberate. I have a favorable opinion of Martha Stewart, but I would wonder about it all. I guess my legal team knows something about it.

It could be, though, she was targeted for prosecution as part of the criminal conspiracy to pirate my identity. She wasn't prosecuted for pirating my identity; rather she was prosecuted in support of the piracy of my true identity and to protect those that are pirating my identity.

And what is it about those shoes Phoebe is wearing as she stands in front of that "King Lear" promo? Her aunt set us up on a blind date. I can't "remember" the name of that bank her aunt worked at but it was in Lancaster, SC. I went out with Anonda one night as I was driving back to Ashdown for Caitlin's birthday. Why do I "remember" that wedding I went to where Anonda was there? I can't "remember" the name of her aunt, but she was the woman that was my primary contact at that bank in Lancaster, SC, where I did computer support. The wedding was for that woman's daughter, I think. I can't "remember" her name either, but I have several "memories" of that wedding. I was late for the start, which was unusal because I was rarely late for anything, and I "remember" that the front door to the church slammed behind me as the wedding photographer was recording video of the wedding, where that sound was probably recorded on the video. I commented later to the mother something about how I had left my mark on the wedding.

I "remember" that I was feeling very depressed at the reception. I was sitting at the table with those women that worked at the bank in Lancaster. I "remember" that Anonda was sitting at another table and I kept wanting to go over and talk to her, because we had gone out on that date that time, but I was too depressed. I "remember" that bride even commented to her mother, as the mother told me later, that she wondered what was wrong with me, and I pondered over that because I didn't know her very well.

FBI searches Harvard graduate's house

April 3, 1996

Web posted at: 11:55 p.m. EST

LINCOLN, Montana (CNN) -- The FBI's 18-year search for the elusive Unabomber led them to a mountain cabin Wednesday, where they caught a former Berkeley professor turned in by his family as a possible suspect in the mail bomb killings.

The suspect was taken into custody when he resisted an effort to search his home in Lincoln, according to law enforcement sources and a saw mill owner whose property the FBI used as a staging area for the raid.

The suspect was identified as Theodore (Ted) Kaczynski by his neighbor at the saw mill, Clifford Gehring.

The Unabomber, so called because his first mail bomb attacks targeted universities and airlines, first surfaced on May 25, 1978, when a package was found in a campus parking lot at the University of Illinois at Chicago. It was brought to nearby Northwestern University the next day because of its return address, and exploded there on May 26 when it was opened, injuring one person.

The first bomb attributed to the Unabomber was found on May 25, 1978. It was a mail parcel left on the campus of the University of Illinois-Chicago, wrapped in a brown paper bag. The return address on the parcel was of a professor at Northwestern University. School officials returned the package to Northwestern, where it exploded, causing minor damage.

"Mister Steiger had a confession to make. This happened after he tried to explain why all those missiles you dodged around Bac Giang were not in the intelligence report or on the maps, even though I'd given him a direct order to include them. Seems he knew the sites weren't exactly where you said they were in your after-action report." His voice rose to a parade-ground bellow. "In short, he said you and Cole weren't around Bac Giang when those SAMs were trying to asshole you. He allowed how you were down over Hanoi on a little private party."

Jake dropped his eyes.

"So it's true, huh? Do you have any idea just what the hell you've done? Before I get through with you, you're going to wish to God it had been you instead of McPherson that stopped that fucking bullet. Stand at attention, Mister Grafton." The "mister" curled off his lips contemptuously.

Jake snapped to attention, eyes fastened on the bulkhead. Camparelli moved to within inches of him. "I've been in the navy for twenty years and worked my ass off to get this command. Now, behind my back, you've abused the trust, my trust , and the trust of every officer in this squadron. My God, don't you understand that the military runs on trust? No one except your bombardier can ride in that plane with you. If you can't, or won't, follow orders, you're not worth a tinker's damn. Even that chicken half-wit New is worth ten of you. I can trust him to be a yellow-coward. But I can trust him. Do you understand me?" He shouted the last question.

Jake's gaze rested on the Old Man's accusing eyes.

"You took an oath, Grafton, when you got your commission. 'I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and obey the orders of the officers appointed over me.' That's the same oath every officer in the navy has sworn for damn-near two hundred years. And you violated that oath. You disobeyed."

Chapter Three

Both fire-warning lights glared a brilliant red. The plane was out of control. The hydraulic gauges still showed plenty of pressure. The nose slammed up and down with an evil perversity, and the machine rolled left. He jammed the stick full right, but the left roll continued. He looked at Morgan. His head was gone. Blood spurted in little fountains from the stump of his neck. The canopy glass was gone on the right side, and the wind howled through the cockpit. The stick was firm, yet the plane did not respond. His body slammed back and forth as the G forces and the wind tore at him. With the altimeter racing down, he fumbled for the ejection handle between his legs. It wasn't there! His hands went to the primary handle over his head, but it too was gone! He couldn't tear his eyes from the wildly spinning altimeter. Maddened by the roar of the hurricane wind, he screamed.

The scream woke him. The darkness and the panic were real. Unable to orient himself, he fought the sheets. One fist struck the bulkhead, and the pain sobered him. He fumbled for the bunk light switch.

He kicked the sheets aside and put his feet on the floor. Sweat covered his brow. He lit a cigarette with trembling hands. Three o'clock in the morning. Sammy Lundeen was flying somewhere over North Vietnam. Morgan McPherson was in a body bag in the ship's morgue.

He had drunk too much bourbon. His head throbbed and his hands still shook. He levered himself upright and fumbled for some aspirin in the medicine cabinet. He wet a face towel and lay down again with the cool cloth on his forehead. He left the light on. He needed the light.

He concentrated on the sounds of the ship working in the seaway. Metal rubbing on metal, the great weight of the ship rolling ever so gently back and forth as it met the swells, the rhythm of movement. He could also hear the sounds of men and machinery. From the engineering spaces below his room came the ringing of hammer blows. He silently cursed the fellow with the hammer, some boilertender, no doubt, delicately adjusting a precision instrument.

But his mind kept coming back to the flight, obsessively. That bullet that got Morg could have smacked me instead, he thought. Two inches lower and it would have gone under his chin and got me in the ear. Smack. I wouldn't have even felt it. Just smack: then nothing.

Page 42

What could he possibly say to Sharon McPherson? Dear Sharon, I'm sorry I got your husband killed. How could he say he was sorry and make it mean anything? Her world gets smashed to bits and he's "sorry."

His hands were still shaking. Adrenaline aftershock, he decided. He picked up a sheet of paper and placed it on top of his splayed fingertips. The paper vibrated. Like everything else in his life, like the targets, like what happened to Morgan, it was beyond his control. He stared into the shadows of the room. He remembered the look on Morgan's face, and the gagging, and the blood. Blood everywhere. The body holds an unbelievable amount of blood. Maybe the people he and Morgan had killed had died like that, bleeding to death. Or maybe they had died instantly from the blast of the bombs. He would never know.

He chewed the pencil, his mind as blank about what he would say to Sharon as the sheet of paper in front of him. What do you say to a widow and mother? Dear Sharon, We just hit a target that wasn't worth a damn. Now your husband's in a body bag in the meat locker. I am sorry as hell he's dead: sorry, oh so sorry, but he is stone cold dead and sorry won't bring him back and you and I and Morgan's boy have to live with it.

"Jake," the skipper said, "when we're in that hearing tomorrow, I want you to make damn sure you tell the truth. Tell the God's truth and let the chips fall where they will and maybe somehow we'll all be able to live with this."

In the passageway Jake apologized to Cowboy, who momentarily put his arm around the smaller man's shoulders. "Nothing to apologize for. I just wish you'd wasted that building and the entire goddamn National Assembly.

Flight Of The Intruder

You want to bomb Hanoi.
You realize I could have you court-martialed
for even making the suggestion.
That's right.
You took a big risk.
Yes, I did.
Why do you want to do this?
I think you know why.
There's guys like Morgan...
they're dying every day, every single day.
This war...
This war's not going to end.
You think it would matter?
One plane?
Yes, I do.
It would matter to me.
I think it would matter to Morg.
It'd matter to all the other guys that had gotten bagged.
It would matter to you, and you know it.
So, you think putting a couple of snake eyes
in the middle of party headquarters is the answer?
Well, I don't know if it's the answer,
but I'll tell you what.
It's going to get their attention, isn't it?
You'd be going right downtown.
It'd be no piece of cake.
Yeah, but it would be worth it.
And this time it's not going to be a bunch of trees.
It's not going to be a road junction.
It's going to be a mission, a real mission.
You think it would change anything at the peace table?
I don't know.
It might.
No dice.
I've been in this war too long
to listen to this idealistic bullshit.
Ah...
Let me tell you, friend,
there's nothing up there worth dying for.
No, let me tell you something.
You risk your life.
You risk your life every mission, every stinking mission.
I do my job.
I do my job.
Don't worry.
I'm going to forget we even talked about this.
Dear Callie,
Last night, I... I talked to my new bombardier
about an idea I had,
but he told me... he told me it was crazy.
Now I'm very confused.
I know that I have to do something about Morg's death,
but I don't know what.
Tonight we go out again to bomb another useless target.

Flight Of The Intruder

A Swiss camera crew in Hanoi, North Vietnam,
took this footage of a celebration of sorts,
commemorating the defeat of American air pirates.
Here in People's Resistance Park,
they've set up trophies of their victories:
grim reminders of the losses
taken in this seven-year-old war over the North.
I'll do it.
I'll go downtown with you.
But first I want you to know something about me.
I had a pilot by the name of Jim Becker.
He was a good man.
We made an agreement
that if we ever went down, one of us got hurt,
that the other guy would go on.
A SAM took us out.
We were down on the ground for days,
sneaking around, eating bugs, living in holes that we dug.
On the sixth day, Becker stepped on a mine
and blew half his leg off.
I tied it off, and he told me to go on.

Flight Of The Intruder

I got about a half mile away... and I couldn't do it.
But by the time I got back to him,
they had already found him and killed him.
I saw it happen.
I just thought you ought to know that...
the skipper and a lot of guys think I just left him there.
I don't think you left him there.
All right.
All right.
Forget your party headquarters.

FLIGHT OF THE INTRUDER

Roger Ebert

January 18, 1991

"Flight of the Intruder" is a buddy movie about Navy pilots in the Vietnam War, circa 1972. It's a little darker than most buddy movies - the buddies keep having to be replaced when pilots are killed - and it has the germ of an idea to it. But it's a strangely disconnected movie that leads up to a point, makes it, and then drones on for another 45 minutes in increasingly witless cliches.

The early scenes are the best. We're onboard an aircraft carrier off Vietnam, with pilot Brad Johnson, who is frustrated because he's being asked to risk his life to hit meaningless targets in the jungle. Objectives of military importance seem to be off limits, and so the hurt is deep when his bombardier is killed by a lucky rifle shot during a tree-top mission.

He expresses his frustration to his commanding officer, played by Danny Glover, but Glover talks tough and won't listen to complaints. Then there's a brief break for R & R, during which the Barroom Brawl Rule is observed ("If the characters in a movie go into a rough-and-tumble saloon, a fight will eventually break out"), and then Johnson meets a young Navy widow (Rosanna Arquette) and spends a sweet interlude with her.

‘Flight of the Intruder’

By Hal Hinson

Washington Post Staff Writer

January 18, 1991

It's one of recent history's stranger twists that John Milius's jingoistic, warmongering "Flight of the Intruder" should move onto our nation's movie screens this weekend. Timing indeed is everything, and in this case it transforms a routinely bad war movie -- one that would under normal circumstances vanish quickly from memory -- into an unsavory though chillingly relevant detail on the landscape of current events.

Set aboard an aircraft carrier in the South China Sea in 1972, the film is a "Top Gun" clone that looks with something like loving nostalgia at the glory days of the Vietnam War. In general the story centers on a group of American pilots flying the Navy's A-6 fighter jet -- nicknamed the Intruder -- and in particular on a fighter jock named Grafton (Brad Johnson) and his attempts to take his revenge on the North Vietnamese for the death of his partner. What he wants to do is fly into Hanoi, which is off-limits to American bombs but contains a large concentration of missiles, and blow them to smithereens.

Of course, Grafton manages to pull another pilot (Willem Dafoe) into his plot and execute his revenge. He is after all an American cowboy hero who makes his own rules and is darned cute in the process. Milius likes to operate on a mythic level, and "Intruder" is his comic-book depiction of the noble American soldier hero and the modern brotherhood of the sword. It's about camaraderie and male bonding, about grace under pressure, macho sacrifice and nervy disregard for any authority beyond your own conscience. More than that, though, it's about blowing stuff up, and while this may be questionable under normal circumstances, at this particular moment it seems offensive in the extreme.

1991 film "Flight of the Intruder" DVD video:

01:26:47

US Navy Commander Frank "Dooke" Camparelli - USS Independence CV 62 air squadron commander: I want you out of my squadron. You'll be transferred out at my convenience.

US Navy Lieutenant Jake "Cool Hand" Grafton - USS Independence CV 62 US Navy A-6 Intruder pilot: Wait a minute! Good men die, and all we care about is following the rules, huh?

US Navy Commander Frank "Dooke" Camparelli - USS Independence CV 62 air squadron commander: What are you looking for, Grafton? Revenge? Now, this is not the place for it. You're going to shake your fist at God and say, "Give me revenge?" Well, He ain't listening. You know what's going on back home. Bombs, riots, people spitting on soldiers in airports. The whole country is tearing itself apart. Is there anything in this pissant war worth that? Christ, all we really got is each other. I want you to think about that while we're out there this morning, Mr. Grafton.

Cuomo: Find out who did it and punish them/Officials agree bomb likely caused Trade Center explosion

R.A. DYER Staff

SUN 02/28/1993

HOUSTON CHRONICLE

NEW YORK -- Investigators of the massive blast at the World Trade Center were stymied Saturday by the severity of the damage as the city awakened to an emotional and economic aftershock.

New York City Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said it may be days before investigators can sift through the rubble at the epicenter of Friday's explosion, which killed five and injured more than 1,000 at the soaring business and trade center in lower Manhattan.

Forensic investigators were barred by engineers from entering the area until sections of the underground parking garage where the blast originated could be shored up.

But even in the absence of forensic reports, police and other officials agreed that a massive bomb or bombs probably caused the violent explosion. Three levels of the parking garage were devastated.

"There is a great crater in there, and it is difficult to imagine what else could have caused it," said New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, who toured the site Saturday morning.

"If it looks like a bomb and smells like a bomb, then it's probably a bomb. . . . The answer is to find out who did it, apprehend the people who did it and punish them."

1992: Blaze rages in Windsor Castle

A fierce fire is raging through Windsor Castle in Berkshire, threatening one of the world's greatest collections of art.

The Queen and the Duke of York have been helping to rescue priceless works from the royal residence, as 200 firefighters attempt to fight the flames.

One of the world's greatest collections of art is threatened by the flames and the Queen and the Duke of York have been helping to rescue priceless works from the royal residence.

The fire started at 1100 GMT in a private chapel on the first floor of the north-east wing and has caused damage which will cost millions to repair.

The fire brigade has not yet established how it started, but police have said they do not suspect arson.

"When I came out of the room I was in, you could see the smoke" The Duke of York

The blaze spread quickly from the chapel, badly damaging St George's Hall, which is often used for banquets, and the state apartments.

It then moved north and took hold in the Brunswick Tower, which has been completely ruined.

The Duke of York - who was in the castle when the fire started - said the Queen was devastated by the damage.

He also told reporters he was horrified at how fast the blaze had spread.

"I heard the fire alarm and some two or three minutes later when I came out of the room I was in, you could see the smoke," he said.

Prince Andrew later joined the human chain removing valuable - and sometimes priceless - works of art from the castle before they were destroyed.

It is thought the bulk of the collection has now been saved, but the Royal Family and locals alike have been shocked by the ferocity of the blaze.

"Heartbreaking - it really is an absolute tragedy," said Berkshire Councillor, Roger Carter.

In Context

It took 250 firefighters 15 hours and 1.5 million gallons of water to put the blaze out.

One hundred rooms were damaged in the fire, which is thought to have been started by a spotlight shining on a curtain.

An intense public debate was sparked about whether the taxpayer should foot the repair bill, as the castle is owned by the British Government and not the Royal Family.

But the Queen agreed to meet 70% of the costs, and opened Buckingham Palace to the public to generate extra funds.

The £40m restoration took five years and was completed in November 1997.

Windsor Castle Badly Damaged by Stubborn Fire

November 21, 1992 WILLIAM TUOHY TIMES STAFF WRITER

LONDON — Windsor Castle, the home of Britain's Royal Family for more than eight centuries, suffered "enormous" damage from a tenacious fire that raged for hours Friday.

Each time firefighters reported that the blaze was under control, it appeared to erupt again--as it did at 7 p.m., almost eight hours after it began. The blaze, which caused a dozen injuries but no fatalities, was reportedly contained by late Friday night, but authorities said it could continue to burn until midday today.

When the fire broke out, Queen Elizabeth II was not in residence at her favorite weekend home, just west of London. But she raced there Friday afternoon on her 45th wedding anniversary to help evacuate priceless furnishings, even as the fire continued to burn.

The queen was "shocked and absolutely devastated" by the damage, which is expected to run into the millions of dollars, said her second son, Prince Andrew, the Duke of York.

Prince Andrew was in his Windsor Castle apartment when the fire began about 11:30 a.m. Friday in the private chapel of the complex, which is so vast it has more than 1,000 rooms. He estimated that at least half a dozen pictures from the royal art collection of old masters were damaged or destroyed when the blaze first began.

The castle is like one great museum and has been added onto by various sovereigns since William the Conqueror started the complex as a wooden fortress soon after the Norman conquest of England in 1066.

Friday's fire spread through St. George's Hall, scene of many sumptuous state banquets. The blaze damaged priceless tapestries, paintings, furniture and woodwork. Smoke and water caused further damage.

Castle officials said there was no evidence of arson or a terrorist attack. But authorities said it might take days to determine the fire's cause.

Prince Andrew, who is separated from his wife, the Duchess of York, and sometimes stays in the castle, surveyed the damage and told reporters: "I heard the fire alarm, and when I came out of the room I could see the smoke. My reaction was shock and horror at the fact that it took hold so quickly."

He said he joined dozens of people who pitched in to retrieve works of art from the sprawling stone castle, which overlooks the town of Windsor from a hill on the Thames River.

After the queen arrived from Buckingham Palace in London to supervise the removal of royal household effects, an aide said the monarch was "enormously upset. She is like any mother watching her home burn down."

Thousands of tourists and townspeople in Windsor watched more than 225 firefighters with 35 fire engines battle the stubborn blaze that swept through private apartments in the castle's northeast wing. The North Terrace area, where the fire started, is farthest from Windsor's main street, which was sealed off to traffic and visitors. Soldiers in battle dress--including guardsmen from the Household Division--arrived to help fight the fire and to evacuate the Royal Family's possessions.

Sammy was seated at the duty desk when Jake and Tiger entered the ready room and laid their baggage across two chairs near the door. Four other officers in the room ignored the two men. Tiger bent over a table and began filling out the maintenance sheets as Jake walked over to the duty desk and drew up a chair. Facing his roommate, he lit cigarette and said, "Hey, shipmate."

Sammy's face was drawn. "How was the beach, Jake?"

"Empty. No carrier in. Nobody there."

"Did you call Callie?"

"She came down from Hong Kong."

Sammy looked at his notes. "There's some kind of hearing tomorrow at 1400 in the lounge forward of the dirty-shirt wardroom. A captain and two staff types from Washington. They must've jumped a plane within hours of the Skipper's bomb. They got here yesterday and have been talking to everyone, me included." He paused and eyed his friend. "This is hot, Jake. Sizzling. Somebody's going to fry."

The Arecibo Observatory is part of the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center (NAIC), a national research center operated by Cornell University under a cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation (NSF). The NSF is an independent federal agency whose aim is to promote scientific and engineering progress in the United States. NSF funds research and education in most fields of science and engineering. Additional support is provided by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

The Observatory had its origins in an idea of Professor William E. Gordon, then of Cornell University, who was interested in the study of the Ionosphere. Gordon's research during the fifties led him to the idea of radar back scatter studies of the Ionosphere. Gordon's persistence culminated in the construction of the Arecibo Observatory which began in the Summer of 1960. Three years later the Arecibo Ionospheric Observatory (AIO) was in operation under the direction of Gordon. The formal opening ceremony took place on November 1, 1963.

Title Card: The A-6 was the U.S. Navy's medium attack bomber during the Vietnam Conflict. It flew at tree-top level in any weather at night and alone. The aircraft had no defensive weapons. It was called - The Intruder.

Title dialog: Three Communist PT boats attacked an American destroyer off the coast of Vietnam yesterday, and today President Johnson's response was hard and tough. He has ordered the U.S. Navy to continue patrolling there, and if they are attacked, to destroy their attackers. [ Title dialog continues: ] President Johnson: I understand the feelings of those who regret that we must undertake air attacks. I share those feelings. [ Title dialog continues: ] Some nights, we're the only airplane going up - going up into the North and when you're thinking you're the only Americans over North Vietnam, it kind of makes you wonder just a little bit, you know. "What am I doing here?" - We have carefully limited those raids. They've been directed at concrete and steel and not human lives - There are at least 850 antiaircraft and missile sites around Hanoi and Haiphong. These figures make Hanoi's air defense the toughest in the world - If you can get a ridge between you and that radar site, they can't guide a missile at you. It's just when you get down in the delta in the flatlands, that 30-mile ring around... the city of Hanoi, it's... it's a bear - Representatives of Hanoi simply returned our message in a plain envelope - Residents of North Vietnam's capital felt confident in the knowledge that their city was off-limits to U.S. warplanes - Lyndon B. Jake took a deep breath. "I can only speak for myself. I got tired of risking my ass and my bombardier's, plus a valuable airplane, night after night, bombing targets that were absolutely worthless: suspected truck stops, suspected troop biovouacs, sampan repair yards that had been bombed ten times before, road intersections - you get the idea." He took another deep breath. "I don't know who picks the targets, but I'll bet a year's pay that they don't fly through the flak and risk their precious asses bombing them."

He looked around at the other faces in the room. "My first bombardier, Morgan McPherson, and about fifty thousand other Americans are dead. Not all these men died actually fighting. Some died on the flight decks, launching planes. But they were all engaged in one effort. So, what did they all die for? Does anybody know? I don't, but I do know this: McPherson didn't get killed hitting a worthwhile target. He died bombing a bunch of trees. I only wish he and I had been swinging with our best punch against a target that made sense when he caught that bullet."

"That they do," the plumber agreed. "So, some Americans are based there now, eh?"

"Yes, about ten of them, and their families." He laughed. "One of the wives nearly killed me in her car last week, driving on the wrong side of the bloody road. You do have to be careful around them, especially in your car."

"I may know one of them, chap name of Clark, I think," Popov offered as a somewhat dangerous ploy.

"Oh? He's the boss. Wife's a nurse in the local hospital. Haven't met him, but they say he's a very serious chappie must be to command that lot. Scariest people I've ever met, not the sort you'd like to find in a dark alley - very polite of course, but you only have to look at them to know. Always out running and such, keeping fit, practicing with their weapons, looking dangerous as bloody lions."

"How did the morning go?"

"The usual. Fixed a water-heater in one of the houses, for a French chap, in fact, part of the new team. His wife is a smasher," Miles reported. "Only saw a picture of him. A sergeant in the French army, it would seem."

"Really?" Popov took a bite of his open-face sandwich.

"Yes, have to go back this afternoon to finish up. Then I have a watercooler to fix in the headquarters building. Bloody things, must be fifty years old. I may have to make the part I need to repair the damned thing. Impossible to get them. The maker went out of business a dog's age ago." Miles started on his own lunch, expertly dividing the various ingredients and then piling them on the freshly made bread.

"Government institutions are all the same," Popov told him.

"That's a fact!" Miles agreed. "And my helper called iii sick. Sick my ahss, " the plumber said. "No rest for the bloody wicked."

"Well, perhaps my tools can help," Popov offered. They continued talking about sports until lunch was finished, then both stood and walked to Miles's truck, a small blue van with government tags. The Russian tossed his collection of tools in the back. The plumber started it up, pulled onto the road.;end headed for the main gate of the Hereford base. The security guard waved them through without a close look.

"See, you just need to know the right bloke to get in here." Miles laughed at his conquest of base security, which, the sign said, was on BLACK status, the lowest alert state. "I suppose the IRA chaps have calmed down quite a bit, and it would never have been a good idea to conic here, not against these chaps, like tweaking a lion's nose - bad job, that," he went on.

"I suppose that's so. All I know about the SAS is what I see on the telly. They certainly look like a dangerous lot."

"That's the bloody truth," Miles confirmed. "All you need do is to look at them, the way they walk and such. They know they're lions. And this new lot, they're exactly the same, maybe even better, some folks say. They've had three jobs, or so I understand, and they've all been on the telly. They sorted that mob out at Worldpark for fair, didn't they?"

For his part, Popov was more than surprised. In Russia the security would have been much tighter. But this was England, and the plumber was doubtless known to the guard. With that, he was inside, trying not to look around too obviously, and exercising all of his self-control not to appear nervous. Miles immediately set to work, unscrewing the front, setting the cover aside, and peering back into the guts of the watercooler. He held his hand out for the small wrench, which Popov handed to him. "Nice feel for the adjustment… but it's brand-new, so that's to be expected…" He tightened an a pipe and gave the wrench a twist. "Come on, now… there." He pulled the pipe out and inspected it by holding it up to a light. "Ah, well, that I can fix. Bloody miracle," he added. He slid back on his knees and looked in his toolbox. "The pipe is merely clogged up. Look, must be thirty years of sediment in there." He handed it over.

Popov made a show of looking through the pipe, but saw nothing at all, the metal tube was so packed with sediment, he guessed from what Miles had said. Then the plumber took it back and inserted a small screwdriver, jammed it like the ramrod of a musket to clear it out, then switched ends to do the same from the other direction.

"So, we're going to get clean water for our coffee?" a voice asked.

"I expect so, sir," Miles replied.

Popov looked up and managed to keep his heart beating. It was Clark, Ivan Timofeyevich, as the KGB file had identified him. Tall, middle fifties, smiling down at the two workmen, dressed in suit and tie, which somehow looked uncomfortable on him. He nodded politely at the man, and looked back down to his tools while thinking as loudly as he could, Go away!

"There, that should do it," Miles said, reaching to put the pipe back inside, then taking the wrench from Popov to screw it into place. In another moment he stood and turned the plastic handle. The water that came out was dirty. "We just need to keep this open for five minutes or so, sir, to allow the pipe to flush itself out."

"Fair enough. Thanks," the American said, then walked off.

"A pleasure, sir," Miles said to the disappearing back. "That was the boss, Mr. Clark."

"Really? Polite enough."

"Yes, decent bloke."
