Scott was on STS-87 also. I suspect I was also on -87 because it is '78' reversed. If any of the crew names are an alias for me, it would probably be "Lindsey." There was also an astronaut from Ukraine onboard as well, which seems important. Aha...That was the first flight Kalpana was on. I have been feeling more and more angry as I think about her being lost

When I think more about Kalpana, I think I must have known her. I remember this woman I worked with early on at Microsoft, who I think was also of Indian-descent. What was her name? Charitha? She was on Jayne Donovan's team with me. I remember that time we had a team outing to go skiing up on the I-90 pass. One woman was talking about how Charitha had bought some ski gear the night before but then didn't go with us. There is something important about this skiing business. I just can't remember what it is.

STS-87 was the first flight of Kalpana, who died on Columbia in 2003. Is she why they had Charitha around me at Microsoft in 1998? Damn. I bet it is. Charitha moved here from India I think during the 9th grade, or so she told me. If I did know Kalpana and Charitha reminded me of her, that explains why something startled me when Charitha were at lunch one day. No one was supposed to know that I knew all those people at NASA. Damn.

Chawla joined the NASA astronaut corps in March 1995 and was selected for her first flight in 1996. Her first space mission began on November 19, 1997 as part of the six astronaut crew that flew the Space Shuttle Columbia flight STS-87.

This photo of Kalpana always reminds me of a woman Microsoft-Corbis had working near me in 1999 when I was there undercover with my official United States federal identity. As with Kalpana, Charitha told me she was born in India and eventually moved to the United States.

This article has different dates for Kalpana's birth date.

Kalpana Chawla (7 March 1962 – 1 February 2003), was an Indian-American astronaut and space shuttle mission specialist. She was one of seven crewmembers killed in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.
