YOUNG: How did the ship get damaged?

JOHANSEN: We don't know. It certainly looks like it's been through a battle - at least the parts we can access.

ARMSTRONG: We're still cut off from most of the ship. It's huge.

JOHANSEN: They tried jamming something into the shuttle doorway to keep it open long enough to let the person inside get out.

ARMSTRONG: But it ... it just opens again. Some sort of safety mechanism like an elevator.

Edwin Hubble

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Edwin Powell Hubble (November 20, 1889 – September 28, 1953) was an American astronomer who played a crucial role in establishing the field of extragalactic astronomy and is generally regarded as one of the most important observational cosmologists of the 20th century.

Edwin Hubble is also known for providing substantial evidence that many objects then classified as "nebulae" were actually galaxies beyond the Milky Way. American astronomer Vesto Slipher provided the first evidence for this argument almost a decade before.

Discoveries

The universe goes beyond the Milky Way galaxy

Edwin Hubble's arrival at Mount Wilson Observatory, California in 1919 coincided roughly with the completion of the 100-inch (2.5 m) Hooker Telescope, then the world's largest. At that time, the prevailing view of the cosmos was that the universe consisted entirely of the Milky Way Galaxy. Using the Hooker Telescope at Mt. Wilson, Hubble identified Cepheid variables (a kind of star that is used as a means to determine the distance from the galaxy – see also standard candle) in several spiral nebulae, including the Andromeda Nebula and Triangulum. His observations, made in 1922–1923, proved conclusively that these nebulae were much too distant to be part of the Milky Way and were, in fact, entire galaxies outside our own. This idea had been opposed by many in the astronomy establishment of the time, in particular by the Harvard University-based Harlow Shapley. Despite the opposition, Hubble, then a thirty-five-year-old scientist, had his findings first published in The New York Times on November 23, 1924, and then more formally presented in the form of a paper at the January 1, 1925 meeting of the American Astronomical Society.

FLASHBACK. Johansen is in I.O.A. representative Camile Wray's office.

WRAY: Does Colonel Young know about this?

JOHANSEN: He knows.

WRAY: Two weeks ago you told me that this was the best experience of your life. Something must have happened.

JOHANSEN: The scholarship came in. I-I guess I've just been too afraid to admit what I really want.

(Camile snorts.)

YOUNG'S QUARTERS. Johansen is pulling a blanket over the colonel.

JOHANSEN: Neurapraxia is a temporary paralysis that can follow a concussive injury.

YOUNG: But you don't know?

JOHANSEN: You'd need an M.R.I. and a qualified doctor who knows how to read it to know for sure if there's spinal damage. We don't have either. Hopefully it's just the nerves in shock. Best I can do is insist that you remain still.

YOUNG: Your tour was over two weeks ago.

(She chuckles briefly, rolling her eyes as if to say, 'Don't I know it!')

YOUNG: You should be in some classroom in San Diego.

JOHANSEN: Seattle. That's where my scholarship was.

YOUNG: I'm sorry.

JOHANSEN: That part's not your fault.

YOUNG: Tell Rush I wanna see him.

JOHANSEN: Yes, sir.

Catherine Carey

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Catherine Carey, after her marriage Catherine Knollys and later Lady Knollys, pronounced "NOL-les" (c. 1524 – 15 January 1569), was chief Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Elizabeth I, who was her first cousin.

Lady of the Bedchamber

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lady of the Bedchamber is the title of the person holding the official position of personal attendant on a British queen or princess. The position is traditionally held by a female member of a noble family.

Bedchamber crisis

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bedchamber Crisis occurred on 7 May 1839 after Whig politician Lord Melbourne resigned as Prime Minister after a government bill was passed by a very narrow margin of only five votes in the House of Commons. The distraught young Queen Victoria, whose ardent political sympathies were with the Whigs, first asked the Duke of Wellington, a former Tory prime minister, to form a new government, but he politely declined. She then reluctantly invited Tory leader Robert Peel to form a government. Peel realised that such a government would hold a minority in the House of Commons and would be structurally weak, possibly damaging his future political career.

Peel accepted the invitation on the condition that Queen Victoria dismiss some of her ladies of the bedchamber, many of whom were wives or relatives of leading Whig politicians. The Queen refused the request, considering her ladies as close friends, not as objects of political bargaining. Peel, therefore, refused to become Prime Minister and Melbourne was eventually persuaded to stay on as Prime Minister.

After Victoria's marriage to Prince Albert in 1840, the Queen relied less on her ladies as companions. In the 1841 general election, Peel's Tories gained a majority and the Queen appointed Peel as the new prime minister, a change of government for which Melbourne had meanwhile been preparing her. Accepting "the wise advice of the democratically minded Prince Albert," Victoria replaced three of her Whig ladies with Tories.

At the time of the crisis, the inexperienced Victoria was not yet twenty years old and had been on the Throne less than two years. She was dismayed at the thought of losing her first, and so far only, Prime Minister, the avuncular Melbourne, who had been a wise and kindly father-figure to the Queen in the first years of her reign (her own father, the Duke of Kent, had died when she was an infant). Victoria also mistakenly assumed that Peel wanted to replace all of her ladies - her closest friends and companions at court - when in fact Peel wished to replace only six of the twenty-five ladies, but failed to make his intentions clear to the Queen.

Late in life, the Queen regretted her youthful intransigence, writing to her private secretary, Sir Arthur Bigge: "I was very young then, and perhaps I should act differently if it was all to be done again."

Mary's first child, a daughter named Catherine, quite possibly named after Queen Catherine of Aragon, was born in 1524. Catherine would become a constant figure at court until her death on 15 January 1569.

http://messier.seds.org/xtra/Bios/marius.html

Simon Marius (January 20, 1573 - December 26, 1624)

Simon Mayr (Latinized Marius) was born in Gunzenhausen, Bavaria, on January 20, 1573. In 1586, he joined the Margrave of Ansbach's Capella and school. He was in the capella for three years, and in the school until 1801, when he was 26 years old. In the following, he went to Prague to join Tycho Brahe's establishment, and after Tycho's death, was enrolled in Padua University to study medicine. In 1605 he return to Ansbach without degree and became Mathematician and Physician to the new Margraves, Christian and Joachim Ernst, a position he held for the rest of his life. Marius died in Ansbach on December 26, 1624.

His earliest astronomical activities include observations of a comet in 1596 and of Kepler's supernova in 1604. In 1608 he learned of telescopes and started to acquire the skills of producing one (like Galileo). Apparently, he independently discovered Jupiter's Moons (despite Galileo's claim of a plagiary, which had some evidence because it seems that he had already helped Capra in Padua to plagiate Galileo's note describing the use of compass), and proposed the names they have since. His credibility is also not enhanced by the fact that he improved his funds from astrology.

Moreover, Marius found (independently rediscovered) the "Nebula in the Girdle of Andromeda", actually the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), on December 15, 1612, and was the first to observe it with a (very moderate) telescope; he described it as looking like a "flame seen through horn" (Marius 1614). He was not aware that this object had been seen previously by medieval Persian astronomers, and described by Al Sufi as early as 964 AD.

The Andromeda Flame

On December 15, 1612, astronomer Simon Marius [Mayr or Mayer] became the first modern observer to locate and describe the Andromeda galaxy. Telescopy being in its infancy, however, he detailed how its shape to his eye appeared like that of a candle flame. The technology did not allow the optical resolution required to differentiate the blur he saw as individual stars.

Although he did not understand the workings of the solar system, Marius made some good observations for his day. He made many observations about the same time as Galileo who was convinced Marius was plagiarizing his work. More likely, given the era, they worked on observations available to them by the telescopy of the time. No Twitter or Facebook to announce to the world who had just made what observation.

However it happened, Jupiter’s four moons are known today as named by Marius – Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. He also recorded a more accurate period of revolution for each than Galileo.

BRODY: Earth.

(The map begins to pull out and a line shows the route of the ship as the Milky Way fades into the distance.)

PARK: It's leaving the galaxy.

RUSH: It did –- long ago.

(They watch as the line continues to travel through the stars, stopping at a couple of points and then continuing onwards. Brody recognises a constellation as the line whizzes away after a stop-off.)

BRODY: That was Pegasus.

(The line moves on, indicating many more points where the ship stopped.)

SCOTT: So those points are more stars?

WALLACE: No –- they're galaxies.

(Shocked, Scott walks over to Rush.)

SCOTT: Rush. Where the hell are we?

RUSH (quietly): Several billion light years from home.
