Pushed?

I have no idea if that is the true birthdate for the real person portrayed in this film or if that is Based-On-A-True-Story-Hollywood fiction.

The dialog makes me take a closer look at it again.

And somewhere here in this blog a long time ago I wrote about my analysis of those opening scenes as I was watching the DVD again but I cannot now recall specific words I used to find again the reference.

Also, I have been under the impression for as long as I can remember that the actions of the pilot are fictional.

`Black Hawk Down' Helps Ranger Heal

Movie Tells A Story He Can't Remember

The Soldier Was Critically Hurt Early In The 1993 Somalia Battle

The Rest Of The Day Is A Blank.

January 19, 2002 By Roger Roy, Sentinel Staff Writer

In the dusty, chaotic capital of far-off Somalia, 18 U.S. soldiers died in a single day in 1993, the worst firefight American troops had fought since Vietnam and the subject of the new movie Black Hawk Down.

That disastrous day, with the television images of dead U.S. soldiers being dragged through the streets of Mogadishu, was one that many military and political leaders were anxious to forget.

But for Todd Blackburn, whose pivotal role in the battle is recounted in the movie, it is a day he has struggled to remember.

"Sometimes bits and pieces of it come through, but that's about all," Blackburn said in an interview this week.

Now a Pensacola police officer, Blackburn, 27, was an Army Ranger in 1993. He was part of a team of about 100 Rangers and elite Delta Force commandos sent in to capture Somali warlords disrupting international efforts to end a famine that had killed an estimated 300,000 Somalis.

In Mogadishu, the Rangers and commandos -- many of them the same soldiers who have since fought in Afghanistan -- had run similar missions in the weeks before Oct. 3, 1993, with few casualties.

But on that day, two helicopters would be shot down, and most of the team would be pinned down overnight in Mogadishu, surrounded by thousands of heavily armed Somalis who were angry over the U.S. military presence in their city.

THINKS MOVIE IS ACCURATE

Blackburn, who was raised in a military family in Pensacola, was the first American casualty of the day. The movie, which Blackburn says is mostly accurate, portrays his injury as the first in a string of events that went wrong.

Blackburn's Ranger team was one of four that were to drop from helicopters and secure a perimeter around a building while the commandos went in to capture members of the clan headed by warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid.

Blackburn still remembers part of that day.

"I remember I went out for a run that morning," Blackburn said. "And I can remember getting ready for the mission."

At their base in an old hangar outside of town, the Rangers strapped on their body armor and loaded up as much extra ammunition as they could carry before boarding their helicopters.

Blackburn remembers the ride in the Black Hawk helicopter and the huge cloud of dust and debris kicked up by the rotors as it hovered over their drop site. One of the last things he remembers is how, even over the roar of the chopper, the Rangers could hear the sound of gunfire as the Somalis shot at them.

But that is where Blackburn's memories of the day end. As the Rangers began to slide down ropes to the street below, something went wrong -- the movie suggests the pilot was dodging a rocket-propelled grenade -- and Blackburn plunged 70 feet. He was unconscious, with serious head and internal injuries.

Blackburn survived only because he was quickly evacuated in a convoy of three Humvees. The vehicles came under such intense fire getting back to their base that the medic treating Blackburn held an IV bag in one hand while he fired his rifle with the other.

In the movie, Blackburn's is the first in a series of mishaps and bad luck that delayed the raid and led to a casualty toll that stunned Americans, who had seen the U.S. action in Somalia as a purely humanitarian venture.

Blackburn spent almost two years in the hospital, and when he left the Army he returned to Pensacola. He said he has nearly completely recovered, except for some recurring memory loss.

"They did a pretty good job of putting me back together," he said.

When the book Black Hawk Down became a best seller several years ago, Blackburn tried to read it. He only got part way through its detailed recounting of his friends' deaths.

"It was just too hard," he said.

But when the movie was screened several weeks ago for U.S. troops at Fort Benning, Ga., the home of the Rangers and Delta Force, Blackburn accepted an invitation.

He said the movie's portrayal of the Rangers, their sense of camaraderie and how they operated in Somalia, was accurate. The movie was filmed in Rabat, Morocco, and the Army let the moviemakers use Black Hawk helicopters and Army Rangers.

SOME SCENES WERE FICTION

But the movie also has "a little bit of Hollywood," Blackburn said.

US suffers far more violent deaths than any other wealthy nation

It's not the frequency of the attacks that stands out -- it's the lethality

KEVIN FREKING, ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States suffers far more violent deaths than any other wealthy nation, due in part to the widespread possession of firearms and the practice of storing them at home in a place that is often unlocked, according to a report released Wednesday by two of the nation’s leading health research institutions.

Gun violence is just one of many factors contributing to lower U.S. life expectancy, but the finding took on urgency because the report comes less than a month after the shooting deaths of 26 people at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn.

The United States has about six violent deaths per 100,000 residents. None of the 16 other countries included in the review came anywhere close to that ratio. Finland was closest to the U.S. ranking with slightly more than two violent deaths per 100,000 residents.

For many years, Americans have been dying at younger ages that people in almost all other wealthy countries. In addition to the impact of gun violence, Americans consume the most calories among peer countries and get involved in more accidents that involve alcohol. The U.S. also suffers higher rates of drug-related deaths, infant mortality and AIDS.

The result is that the life expectancy for men in the United States ranked the lowest among the 17 countries reviewed, at 75.6 years, while the life expectancy for U.S. women ranked second lowest at 80.7 years. The countries reviewed included Canada, Japan, Australia and much of Western Europe.

The nation’s health disadvantages have economic consequences. They lead to higher costs for consumers and taxpayers as well as a workforce that remains less healthy than that of other high-income countries.

“With lives and dollars at stake, the United States cannot afford to ignore this problem,” said the report from the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine.

In attempting to explain why Americans are so unhealthy, the researchers looked at three categories: the nation’s health care system, harmful behaviors and social and economic conditions. Researchers noted that the U.S. has a large uninsured population compared to other countries with comparable economies, and more limited access to primary care. And although the income of Americans is higher on average than that of other wealthy countries, the United States also has a higher level of poverty, especially among children.

Researchers said American culture probably plays an important role in the life expectancy rates falling short of other wealthy countries.

“We have a culture in our country that, among many Americans, cherishes personal autonomy and wants to limit intrusion of government and other entities on our personal lives and also wants to encourage free enterprise and the success of business and industry. Some of those forces may act against the ability to achieve optimal health outcomes,” said Dr. Steven H. Woolf of Virginia Commonwealth University, who served as chairman for the study panel.

Richard Nixon

XXXVII President of the United States: 1969 - 1974

7 - Remarks at a Reception Honoring Members of the Shenyang Acrobatic Troupe of the People's Republic of China.

January 12, 1973

Ladies and gentlemen:

We are very happy to welcome you officially here in the White House and to thank you for the splendid achievement that you have made in your trip in the United States. This is the first group of performing artists to come from the People's Republic of China to the United States of America in a quarter of a century. And I am sure that all of those who have had the privilege of seeing you will say the first was the best.

I can say that based on the reports that I have had from Mrs. Nixon, who was there for the first night, and also from my daughter, who was there on the third night, you have, by coming such a great distance from your country to our country, brought us a very great gift. You have brought us the talent of great artists. But even more important, you have brought us a greater gift.

My daughter reported how impressed she was by your talent in your performance at the Kennedy Center. She reported how the audience stood and applauded after most of the acts. But she reported that the greatest applause was at the conclusion, when you held up a sign saying, "Chinese-American Friendship."

And friendship is the most important gift that one group can bring to another. It is a tragedy of this century that for 20 years a great wall of hostility has separated the 800 million people of the People's Republic of China and the 200 million people of the United States of America.

As a result of the meetings that I was privileged to have with Chairman Mao and Premier Chou En-lai in Peking early in 1972, that wall of hostility is now coming down. And we only hope in the future that young Americans will have the opportunity to go to your country and that they will be as fine ambassadors of friendship as you have been ambassadors of friendship from the People's Republic of China to the United States of America.

Now, since you have brought us these great gifts, your talent and your friendship, we have a small token of appreciation for you to take with you as you return home.

This is the seal of the President of the United States which each of you can have and which will remind you of your visit to our country.

Now, Mrs. Nixon and I would like the privilege of greeting each of you personally to express our appreciation for your long journey, for your magnificent talent, but most of all for the friendship that you have brought to the American people.

Note: The President spoke at 3:03 p.m. in the State Dining Room at the White House. Following his remarks, the members of the troupe were presented with ashtrays and pens bearing the Presidential seal.

The troupe, consisting of 40 performers and 12 musicians, toured the United States from December 16, 1972, to January 13, 1973, visiting Chicago, Indianapolis, New York City, and Washington, D.C.

I find myself thinking of some "memories" of when I was assigned to the USS Wainwright. The ship had left port for a short regional deployment and I stayed back because I had a medical appointment on base. Or something like that. Not really sure why I didn't leave with the ship but it was because of some appointment on base. After that appointment, there was a period before the ship was due back when I was assigned to work in an office there on base. I liked the assignment because I had to wear my dress uniform and I liked that because I got to wear all my ribbons. I didn't have any ribbons until we were in the Persian Gulf and so most of my ribbons were from that Operation Praying Mantis combat engagement. There were two other petty officers in the office; they might have been CPO's, but maybe Petty Officer First Class's. They didn't really have any work for me to do in there so they had me crumpling up pages of documents that were going into a burn bag because they were classified. They told me to take my time and pace myself because they didn't have any other work for me but I "remember" that I went through all the documents too soon and then didn't have anything to do. But then I was watching one of them typing up some regular report on a computer and he didn't know how to touch type so I volunteered to type it for him. I think the word processor was Gemstar. He told me I had saved him a lot of time. I had to leave and report back to the Wainwright the next day I think.

Black Hawk Down -- An American War Story -- The Day U.S. Got Stung In Somalia

By Mark Bowden

The Philadelphia Inquirer

Late in the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 3, 1993, attack helicopters dropped about 120 elite American soldiers into a busy neighborhood in the heart of Mogadishu, Somalia. Their mission was to abduct several top lieutenants of Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid and return to base. It was supposed to take about an hour.

Instead, two of their high-tech UH-60 Black Hawk attack helicopters were shot down. The men were pinned down through a long and terrible night in a hostile city, fighting for their lives. When they emerged the following morning, 18 Americans were dead and 73 were wounded. One, helicopter pilot Michael Durant, had been carried off by an angry mob. He was still alive, held captive somewhere in the city.

That was tremendously violent dream to awake from. I remember many of the details leading up to the ending after the altercation started. I saw people trying to escape. I had taken cover behind a pickup truck parked on the curb and with a building behind me, I saw body parts dropping around me from a large battle going on in the street between me and the pickup truck. The point where I awoke was when blood was raining down on me in drops and I was trying to cover myself by what I started thinking after waking was a corpse that was hanging over the side of the pickup truck.

I wasn't writing very much as this point about my new thoughts, although I did start writing a lot in my journal about it around this time. I think back and I was primarily puzzling over my memories of the places I "remembered" that I used to live. I think it was actually Wexford Drive that got me thinking that my memories were completely false. I started searching on the internet for something about Wexford and I found something right away and even before I began reading about John Barry, I knew that the detail about Wexford was going to have some profound meaning to me. I also think there is some part of my true identity that is very bored and has been locked into a room with only a small window to try to yell through. The people who locked me in there are at least now standing outside the door and listening to me as best they can but I don't understand why they won't let me out.
