Time dilation

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the theory of relativity, time dilation is a difference of elapsed time between two events as measured by observers either moving relative to each other or differently situated from a gravitational mass or masses.

An accurate clock at rest with respect to one observer may be measured to tick at a different rate when compared to a second observer's own equally accurate clock. This effect arises neither from technical aspects of the clocks nor from the fact that signals need time to propagate, but from the nature of spacetime itself.

Gravitational time dilation

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gravitational time dilation is a form of time dilation, an actual difference of elapsed time between two events as measured by observers situated at varying distances from a gravitating mass. The weaker the gravitational potential (the further the clock is from the source of gravitation), the faster time passes. Albert Einstein originally predicted this effect in his theory of relativity and it has since been confirmed by tests of general relativity.

This has been demonstrated by noting that atomic clocks at differing altitudes (and thus different gravitational potential) will eventually show different times. The effects detected in such Earth-bound experiments are extremely small, with differences being measured in nanoseconds. Demonstrating greater effects would require greater distances from the Earth and/or a larger gravitational source.

Time dilation: special vs. general theories of relativity

In special relativity, the time dilation effect is reciprocal: as observed from the point of view of either of two clocks which are in motion with respect to each other, it will be the other clock that is time dilated. (This presumes that the relative motion of both parties is uniform; that is, they do not accelerate with respect to one another during the course of the observations.) In contrast, gravitational time dilation (as treated in general relativity) is not reciprocal: an observer at the top of a tower will observe that clocks at ground level tick slower, and observers on the ground will agree about the direction and the ratio of the difference. There is still some disagreement in a sense, because all the observers believe their own local clocks are correct, but the direction and ratio of gravitational time dilation is agreed by all observers, independent of their altitude.

By the time you get to the other side, you're frozen stiff, like you've just been through a blizzard, naked.

[He and Kawalsky grin at each other.]

CARTER
That's a result of the compression your molecules undergo during the millisecond required for reconstitution.

O'NEILL
Oh, here we go. Another scientist. General, please.

Which means she is smarter than you are, Colonel. Especially in matters related to the Stargate.

Space flight

Time dilation would make it possible for passengers in a fast-moving vehicle to travel further into the future while aging very little, in that their great speed slows down the passage of on-board time relative to that of an observer. That is, the ship's clock (and according to relativity, any human traveling with it) shows less elapsed time than the clocks of observers on earth. For sufficiently high speeds the effect is dramatic. For example, one year of travel might correspond to ten years at home. Indeed, a constant 1 g acceleration would permit humans to travel through the entire known Universe in one human lifetime. The space travelers could return to Earth billions of years in the future.

Maybe I was lying about my departure date as I time travelled from the future to the past. How would they know if I gave them the correct date?

I probably won't know the date myself until I am presented with the opportunity to make the jump.

In the future relative to today, I jump to the past and create time travel and then program my time travel portal to appear to me the first time on a day that is the future from today.

Also, I am aware of details because I have existed in the same time period with my other self

Attorney General Brown: We knew Decker was trying to design something. But when he sold his plans, he wasn't even halfway done.

Agent Klein: I don't understand.

Attorney General Brown: Decker was working at JPL on a laser-enhanced lens. He claimed the lens was powerful enough to see around the curvature of the universe.

[He picks up a red apple to demonstrate]

Attorney General Brown: Decker believed that if you could see around a curve that went on forever, you would end up back where you started. Looking at yourself.

[Brown tosses the apple to Klein]

Agent Dodge: Except you're not looking back at yourself now, in the present.

Attorney General Brown: No, you are not. You're looking at the future.

Attorney General Brown: Can you imagine what'll happen if Jennings figures out what he's done

"The Post War Dream"

Among the myriad sleeping dreams I tossed and turned through trying to sleep last night was one that stayed with me through the night, seeming to resurface more than once as I tried to sleep. From the perspective of my eyes, I saw myself hit the ground among a large group of people. Then I was butchering them after they attacked me. One after another I killed with it all starting with me seeing a large procession of the enemy and I was screaming "I *am* the stargate!"
