Star Trek: The Next Generation

I keep wanting to say this episode is completely unfamiliar. But then one or two scenes makes me think there is something vaguely familiar about it. So I don't know. This could be an episode I have never watched before or I have seen it only one time before and then that was very long ago. I don't think I was watching this television series back in the early 1990s. The previous episode re-broadcast this morning was "Conundrum" and several years ago I wrote about my memory of first seeing that episode.

After thinking for a few hours I feel more certain I have seen this episode before but as I said probably only one time and a very long time ago.

And finally, I am standing here at my computer composing this note and am I just completely in disbelief after all these years I have published this blog at the lack of response from that so-called "Trekkie" community. They are truly a worthless group of oxygen suckers.

Captain's log, stardate 45571.2. We are going into orbit around an unexplored M-class moon of Mab-Bu Six. Though the moon was reported to be uninhabited, we have picked up a weak distress call.

[Bridge]

DATA: The intense electromagnetic whirlwinds on the moon's surface make it virtually impossible to locate the source of the signal, Captain.

PICARD: Any indications of life, Mister Worf?

WORF: Scanners read negative, sir, but they may be affected by the interference.

RIKER: Have you ever heard anything like this, Data?

DATA: I believe so, Commander. At Starfleet Academy.

PICARD: The Academy?

DATA: I will verify it. Just as I thought. It is a Starfleet subspace distress signal, standard to Daedalus-class starships.

RIKER: There hasn't been a Daedalus class in service for what?

DATA: One hundred seventy two years, sir.

PICARD: Are there any records of missing ships in this vicinity?

DATA: The USS Essex under the command of Captain Bryce Shumar disappeared in this sector over two centuries ago.

PICARD: Daedalus class.

DATA: I have accessed the subspace transponder signature of the Essex. It is identical to the signal coming from the moon's surface.

RIKER: W arrived a little late.

PICARD: Mute it, Mister Data. With that storm activity down there, it isn't worth the risk to check on a ghost ship. Advise Starfleet that we have solved the mystery of Captain Shumar and the Essex.

TROI: I'm not sure we have. Someone's down there. Alive.

DON HENLEY

"All She Wants To Do Is Dance"

They're pickin' up the prisoners and puttin' 'em in a pen
And all she wants to do is dance, dance
Rebels been rebels since I don't know when
And all she wants to do is dance
Molotov cocktail- the local drink
And all she wants to do is dance, dance
Crazy people walkin' round with blood in their eyes
And all she wants to do is dance, dance
Wild-eyed pistol wavers who ain't afraid to die
And all she wants to do is-
All she wants to do is dance and make romance
She can't feel the heat comin' off the street
She wants to party
She wants to get down
All she wants to do is-
All she wants to do is dance

Well, the government bugged the men's room in the local disco lounge
And all she wants to do is dance, dance
To keep the boys from sellin' all the weapons they could scrounge
And all she wants to do is dance
But that don't keep the boys from makin' a buck or two
And all she wants to do is dance, dance
They still can sell the army all the drugs that they can do
And all she wants to do is-
All she wants to do is dance and make romance

Well we barely made the airport for the last plane out
As we taxied down the runway I could hear the people shout
They said "Don't come back here Yankee"
But if I ever do-
I'll bring more money
'Cause all she wants to do is dance and make romance
Never mind the heat comin' off the street
She wants to party
She wants to get down
All she wants to do is-
All she wants to do is dance
All she wants to do is dance and make romance
All she wants to do is dance

DATA: It is unlikely that we will be able to establish communication with the ship, given the electromagnetic interference.

RIKER: We'll stay in the area until the Enterprise finds us. Take an inventory of the shuttle. See if there's anything left in there that's usable. The ground cover is all non-porous rock, which makes me believe it's even less likely there's anyone living here.

DATA: There are no instruments left of practical value that have not been damaged by our landing, sir.

TROI: What is that?

RIKER: That doesn't look like any storm front I've ever seen.

DATA: The tricorder is picking up high levels of EM bursts across the spectrum. No lifesign readings other than our own.

TROI: There is someone alive here. I'm more certain of it now than ever.

RIKER: Well, I hope they can find us, because there's no way we'll find them.

TROI: They're coming. They're coming with the storm.

[Briefing room]

WOMEN: Harry! Where were you?

MUDD: Shh! Calm down now, darlings. Would you mind waiting outside?

SECURITY: Sorry, sir.

MUDD: Well, now, answer every question they put to you. Don't lie. Well, you've no need to, have you, and don't submit to a med. That is, being so healthy, they've no need for a medical exam, have they.

RUTH: What if they ask about

MUDD: They won't. Have you no place to go lads?

MAGDA: They'll notice we're different.

MUDD: No, no, no, they won't. Just let Leo take all the hard questions. Now don't be panicking, loves. We'll get to

EVE: Get where? We don't have a ship and we're headed the wrong way, Harry.

NUDD: Leo. Leo Walsh is me name, darling. Don't forget that. So lovely. Lovely, aren't they? If they only think lovely thoughts, if they smile, they'll come out right some which way, won't they? My personal guarantee on that.

[Bridge]

SPOCK: The entire ship's power is feeding through one lithium crystal.

KIRK: Well, switch to by-pass circuits.

SCOTT: We burned them all out when we super-heated. That jackass Walsh not only wrecked his vessel, but in saving his skin

KIRK: If it makes you feel better, Engineer, that's one jackass we're going to see skinned.

SCOTT: But it's frustrating. Almost a million gross tons of vessel depending on a hunk of crystal the size of my fist.

SPOCK: And that crystal won't hold up, not pulling all our power through it.

KIRK: Well, Mister Spock?

SPOCK: There's a lithium mining operation on Rigel 12. High-grade ore, I've heard.

KIRK: Location and distance.

SPOCK: Mister Farrell has the course. Less than two day's travel.

KIRK: Make for Rigel 12, Mister Spock.

SPOCK: Rigel 12, Mister Farrell. You have the course.

NASA

Nereid: In Depth

Nereid is one of the outermost of Neptune's known moons and is among the largest. Nereid is unique because it has one of the most eccentric orbits of any moon in our solar system. Nereid is so far from Neptune that it requires 360 Earth days to make one orbit. This odd orbit suggests that Nereid may be a captured asteroid or Kuiper Belt object or that it was greatly disturbed during the capture of Neptune's largest moon Triton.

Discovery:

Nereid was discovered on 1 May 1949 by Gerard P. Kuiper with a ground-based telescope. It was the last satellite of Neptune to be discovered before Voyager 2's discoveries four decades later.

Crush, Texas

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Crush, Texas, was a temporary "city" established as a one-day publicity stunt in 1896. William George Crush, general passenger agent of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (popularly known as the Katy), conceived the idea to demonstrate a train wreck as a spectacle. No admission was charged, and train fares to the crash site were at the reduced rate of US$2 from any location in Texas. As a result, about 40,000 people showed up on September 15, 1896, making the new town of Crush, Texas, temporarily the second-largest city in the state. Unexpectedly, the impact caused both engine boilers to explode, resulting in several fatalities and numerous injuries among the spectators.

Preparations

Two wells were drilled at the site 3 miles (4.8 km) south of the town of West in McLennan County. Circus tents from Ringling Brothers were erected as well as a grandstand. The train engines were painted bright green (engine #999) and bright red (engine #1001), both 4-4-0 American locomotives (two pilot axles, two drive axles, and nothing under the firebox). A special track was built alongside the Katy track so that there was no chance a runaway train could get onto the main line. Crush, Texas was named after Mr. Crush who worked for the railroad and invented the Crash at Crush event. One of the descendants, Mark Crush, has made history available to Texas history scholars who study this event. The trains toured the state for months in advance, advertising the event.

Crash

The event had to be delayed for an hour because the crowd resisted being pressed back by the police to what was supposedly a safe distance. About 5:00 pm the two trains, pulling cars loaded with railroad ties, were rolled to the opposite ends of a 4-mile (6.4 km) track. The engineers and crew opened the steam to a prearranged setting, rode for exactly 4 turns of the drive wheels, and jumped from the trains. Each train reached a speed of about 45 miles per hour (72 km/h) by the time they met near the anticipated spot.

When the trains collided, there was a large explosion. Debris—some pieces as large as half a drive-wheel—was blown hundreds of feet into the air. Some of the debris came down among the spectators, killing two or three and injuring many more.

THE HISTORICAL MARKER DATABASE

The Crash at Crush

(0.5 Mi. E)

Inscription. A head-on collision between two locomotives was staged on Sept. 15, 1896, as a publicity stunt for the Missouri, Kansas & Texas railroad. Over 30,000 spectators gathered at the crash site, named "Crush" for MKT passenger agent William G. Crush, who conceived the idea. About 4 p.m. the trains were sent speeding toward each other. Contrary to mechanics' predictions, the steam boilers exploded on impact, propelling pieces of metal into the crowd. Two persons were killed and many others injured, including Jarvis Deane of Waco, who was photographing the event.

PICARD: But I also can't ignore that we have greatly outclassed the only enemy vessel we've encountered. And that every single possible shred of information which might shed some light on this situation has been conveniently eliminated. I feel as though I've been handed a weapon, sent into a room and told to shoot a stranger. Well, I need some moral context to justify that action, and I don't have it. I'm not content simply to obey orders. I need to know that what I am doing is right.

MACDUFF: So do I. I'd feel a lot better about this if all the questions were answered. And if you want to abandon our mission until our memories return, that's your choice, but I must ask you. Is it right to risk prolonging this war, to allow the needless deaths of thousands on both sides, solely on the basis of our moral discomfort?

[MacDuff's quarters]

MACDUFF: Come.

(Worf enters)

MACDUFF: Lieutenant.

WORF: You wished to see me, sir?

MACDUFF: I did. Please. Memory or no, it seems clear that both you and I were born for battle. More so than the others.

WORF: I thought this as well.

MACDUFF: It's conceivable that is the very reason that we've been assigned to this vessel. The Enterprise has science officers, medical specialists, engineers. Our Captain is undoubtedly an accomplished diplomat. But we, we are the warriors. There are times for diplomacy. This is not one of them.

WORF: You're concerned about the Captain?

MACDUFF: I am concerned about completing our mission, ending this war. In victory. We may soon face a critical moment. The success of our mission may hang on a split-second decision. A hesitation would kill us all, and those that are counting on us will surely die as well. We cannot let this happen. That'll be all.
