It's funny how I "remember" trying to catch craw-dad's when I was a kid. I would stand over a craw-dad hole with a piece of bacon on a hole and lower it into the hole. LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Even in the afterlife, some celebrities remain big-time moneymakers. Elvis Presley, Albert Einstein, Kurt Cobain, Andy Warhol and Marilyn Monroe continue to earn enviable incomes from the grave, according to Forbes magazine.

Presley, who died in 1977, raked in an estimated $52 million last year. Cobain, who committed suicide in 1994, generated about $50 million. Most of that came when his widow, Courtney Love, sold 25 percent of Nirvana's song catalog in April.

Einstein, who has been dead for more than 50 years, took in about $20 million in 2005, Forbes estimates. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem controls the famed thinker's estate and collects $5 million a year from the use of his images. The university also earns royalties from Disney's line of Baby Einstein toys and videos, Forbes reports, which generated $400 million in sales last year.

Good evening. Thank you Gus, and thank you to the Excellencies and Ministers who are in attendance tonight, and to David Miles, the Chair of The Global Foundation, which made this evening possible.

It's great to be among so many people who care deeply about these important issues. This is actually the first talk I've ever given touching on the foundation and the health-giving that we've been doing.

All day long I've been talking about the wonders of new technology and software. That's a very familiar thing for me, because I feel it very passionately but no more passionately than I feel about the causes that we're talking about tonight.

It's great to be here in Australia. My wife and I will have a chance to take a few weeks off and see a week of the Games. We're very much looking forward to that. The Games were last here in Melbourne back in 1956. I was one year old at the time, the same age as my son is right now. But it's interesting to think how the world has changed since then, and it's changed in some very, very positive ways. If you think of health, if you think of the situation that women are in, if you think of access to technology that lets people pursue their curiosity, we have come a long ways.

Francis Collins, in full Francis Sellers Collins (born April 14, 1950, Staunton, Va., U.S.), American geneticist who discovered genes causing genetic diseases and led the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) public research consortium in the Human Genome Project (HGP). In 2009 Pres. Barack Obama nominated Collins to head the NIH, a move that was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in August of that year.

Homeschooled by his mother for much of his childhood, Collins took an early interest in science. He received a B.S. from the University of Virginia (1970), went on to Yale University to earn an M.S. and a Ph.D. (1974), and earned an M.D. (1977) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1984 Collins joined the staff of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor as an assistant professor. His work at Michigan would earn him a reputation as one of the world’s foremost genetics researchers. In 1989 he announced the discovery of the gene that causes cystic fibrosis. The following year a Collins-led team found the gene that causes neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that generates the growth of tumours. He also served as a leading researcher in a collaboration of six laboratories that in 1993 uncovered the gene that causes Huntington chorea, a neurological disease.

In 1993 Collins, by then a full professor, left Michigan to take the post as head of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) of the NIH, which had begun work on the HGP three years earlier with a stated goal of completing the sequencing project in 15 years at a cost of $3 billion by coordinating the work of a number of leading academic research centres around the country, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy and the Wellcome Trust of London. Driven by a sincere interest in successful research that could help humanity, Collins was an obvious choice for the job, and he willingly took a sizable pay cut to participate in a historic project.

The necessity of a government effort was questioned when a rival operation, Celera Genomics, emerged in 1998 and appeared to be working even faster than the HGP at deciphering the human deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequence. Headed by American geneticist and businessman J. Craig Venter, a former NIH scientist, Celera had devised its own, quicker method—though some scientists, Collins among them, questioned the accuracy of the work. However, in the end the public and private endeavours came together. On June 26, 2000, Collins, Venter, and U.S. Pres. Bill Clinton gathered in Washington, D.C., to announce that the rough draft sequence of the DNA in the human genetic map had been completed through the combined effort of Collins’s public research consortium and Venter’s private company. The breakthrough was hailed as the first step toward helping doctors diagnose, treat, and even prevent thousands of illnesses caused by genetic disorders. In April 2003, following further analysis of the sequence, the HGP came to a close. The announcement of the completion of the HGP coincided with the 50th anniversary of American geneticist and biophysicist James D. Watson and British biophysicist Francis Crick’s publication on the structure of DNA.

A practicing Christian, Collins freely expressed the awe he experienced as a leader in the uncloaking of one of the mysteries of life. As concerns arose about the moral and ethical implications of the research he had conducted, Collins actively cautioned against misuse of genetic information. At congressional hearings in July 2000, Collins urged the passage of federal law to set guidelines on how individuals’ genetic information could be handled. “The potential for mischief is quite great,” he said.

Scientists map human genetic code

WASHINGTON — An international consortium of scientists announced today that it has completed the map of the human genetic code to an accuracy of 99.99 percent and said the accomplishment opens a new era for biology and medicine.

The group announced in 2000 that it had completed a rough draft of the code, and the new report said the sequence is now "essentially complete" and freely available on computer databases to scientists all over the world.

Already, the group said, the computer databases carrying the sequences are getting more than 120,000 visits a day.

"After three billion years of evolution, we have before us the instruction set that carries each of us from one cell egg to adulthood to the grave," said Dr. Robert Waterston, of the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium, an organization of 18 institutions that participated in the project.

Dr. Francis Collins, head of the National Human Genome Research Institute , the lead National Institutes of Health agency in the project, said the American share of the effort was completed ahead of schedule and under budget. The project started in 1990 and was expected to last 15 years at a cost of $3 billion. It was completed at a cost of $2.7 billion in less than 13 years.

He said the project is delivering, into public databases, "a remarkable gift to all of humankind — all of the letters to our human construction book."

Collins said the next step is to apply this new fundamental knowledge and he forecast revolutions in biology, medicine and in society.

Just when the predicted medical benefits will be harvested is still uncertain, Collins said, but he forecast that it will touch every phase of medicine and disease treatment in coming centuries.

The leaders of the six countries whose scientists participated in the effort issued a joint statement — released by the White House — welcoming the work as providing a "fundamental platform for understanding ourselves."

In addition to President Bush, the statement was signed by Jacques Chirac, president of France; British Prime Minister Tony Blair, German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and Wen Jiabao, premier of China.

The genome is the collection of genes that form the DNA that contains the instructions for life. In humans, it’s about 3.12 billion pairs of chemicals that form between 35,000 and 40,000 genes.

A gene is a group of those pairs, and each gene is a single instruction for the makeup of a being.

Strong chance Justice will rule for government as antitrust trial recesses

WASHINGTON (CNNfn)- The landmark Microsoft antitrust trial adjourned Friday for a lengthy recess with the company's defense in disarray and a strong likelihood the judge will eventually rule for the government.

Microsoft's fortunes have slid in recent weeks as its defense witnesses ran into a buzz saw of questions from legendary litigator David Boies, hired specially for this case by the government.

District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson, whose tolerance for Microsoft witnesses had been on the decline, reached a new level of impatience a few hours before the recess began.

"No! Stop!" Jackson shouted at Microsoft vice president Bob Muglia, when Muglia refused to stop arguing with him about the meaning of an e-mail written Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates.

A lawyer who asked not to be identified because he works with Sullivan & Cromwell, the law firm representing Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), said he was puzzled by the mistakes.

"I really don't understand what is going on here," he said. "They are better than this."

The Justice Department and 19 states argue they have shown Microsoft holds monopoly power through its Windows operating system and abused that power to illegally crush competitors.

Microsoft is publicly confident the government has shown no such thing. "The government has failed to show any harm to consumers as a result of Microsoft's activities," company general counsel William Neukom told reporters Friday.

But just to be on the safe side, the closely allied Association for Competitive Technology recently released a 31-page report arguing against any court-mandated changes to the industry.

The unsurprising conclusion of "Breakup and Compulsory Licensing: Remedies or Bad Medicine?" was that none of the remedies under discussion by Microsoft's critics, such as breaking the company into three entities, are any good.

Judge Jackson will recess the trial for about 6 weeks. The trial will then resume in mid April for rebuttal witnesses, which could take several weeks.

There are several reasons for the recess. Judge Jackson has other trials to preside over, David Boies has another trial in March, and lead defense Attorney John Warden wants to take his family vacation.

Lawyers said the rebuttal phase will add little new to the case.

The only real surprise would be if Microsoft called multibillionaire Gates as a rebuttal witness. The company left the door open Friday when it declined to rule out that possibility.

Neither the Justice Department nor the 19 states that brought the case will talk about specific remedies, although a representative of the states said they are mulling over ways of restoring competition.

The government's case rests largely on thousands of pages of e-mails and internal Microsoft documents that reveal the company's thinking as it tried to win customers away from Netscape Communications Corp.'s Web browser to Microsoft's competing Internet Explorer.

Company officials testified they feared Netscape (NSCP) could use its Web browser as a platform to run software and undercut demand for the Windows operating system.

The government says Microsoft bullied other companies into siding with its product and integrated Internet Explorer into Windows as a way of winning market share rather than giving consumers special benefits.

Microsoft went into the trial with a seemingly simple and solid defense that it had fought hard but legally to be the No. 1 software company in the world and had maintained that position by providing the best software to consumers.

But when Microsoft's own defense witnesses starting appearing in mid-January the script wasn't followed.

In one searing cross-examination after another, Boies left the credibility of Microsoft witnesses in tatters.

The company was embarrassed by a botched videotape presented by Microsoft vice president James Allchin that was meant to show Internet Explorer separated from the Windows program ran slowly.

Boies said what Allchin had testified was a single demonstration was in fact several different computers or demonstrations spliced together. The judge said he was unable to rely on the tape.

And Boies accused Dan Rosen, another Microsoft witness, of fabricating evidence, eventually forcing him to recant. Rosen's credibility problems became so acute that Judge Jackson joked Microsoft's lawyer was setting out on a "heroic endeavor" when he began examining the witness.

I wish I had marked the date of that strike by those people on the trail in Redmond that day. I am certain they are part of Reichert’s Death Squad. I knew the guy was trying to hit me because we hit so hard. If he had not been trying to hit me, we would have sort of bounced off each other, a deflecting hit. Instead, it was a solid hit. I remember it knocked my shoe out of the clipped pedal and I think it knocked my right hand off the handle bar. It was remarkable that I didn’t crash, especially because I was moving at a pretty good speed on that open stretch. The hit caused me to veer off to the other side of the trail, fortunately no one was following me or we would have certainly crashed into each other, and I stopped and dropped my bike. I was going to pummel the guy at that point because I knew something was wrong with that situation, but he didn’t seem that threatening because he was shorter than me and he had a foreign accent. He didn’t do anything else threatening so I let it go. I remember he started off by approaching me behind my back and asking me what my problem was. I ended the “conversation” by telling him I was “tired of his shit.” I suspect what they did is go back to their superiors, probably with video from the jogger I passed shortly before reaching them, and reported that I was aggressive because we hit. It’s called manufacturing evidence. Assuming that a judge has authorized this constant surveillance of me, it was based on their aggressiveness. They staged that event and took it to a judge as proof they needed to keep me in their virtual cage.

In the closing minutes of its epic antitrust battle with the Justice Department, Microsoft Corp introduced new material that appeared to be manufactured for the purposes of the trial. In a desperate final bid to win over Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson, Microsoft produced a document produced by its own cable TV network, MSNBC which reported that America Online Inc had just acquired Microworkz.com Inc for its internet device, iToaster, a product that does not require Windows and is therefore a threat to the Windows operating system. Microsoft has centered its case around what it perceives to be potential platform threats to Windows. After the trial, ComputerWire discovered AOL had not acquired this company at all. Microworkz president and CEO said: "We have entered cross-marketing talks with AOL in line with previous cross-marketing deals that AOL has made with other companies." He added: "AOL may want to be the exclusive ISP for the iToaster, but it has not acquired us." The iToaster, launched at PC Expo in New York two days ago, is a handheld internet appliance priced at $200. Microsoft claims AOL is about to develop it into an AOL PC. Responding to the "AOL PC" news by Microsoft, lead government attorney David Boies said outside the courtroom, "This is a deliberate attempt to distract from the central issue at stake here which is the PC operating system." He added: "The iToaster has nothing to do with Microsoft's anti- competitive practices and its own witnesses have testified that these devices will not replace the PC."

Microsoft's attempt at a closing punch followed the government's effort to go out with a bang earlier in the day. Boies was able to unseal a Microsoft document on its response to the AOL/Netscape/Sun alliance which contained handwritten footnotes allegedly made by Microsoft CEO Bill Gates. The note states: "AOL doesn't have it in their genes to attack us in the platform space." The document was prepared by Microsoft in December last year in response to the AOL/Netscape and Sun alliance and is titled: "Competitive Reviews - deal discussion framework." It was put under seal at the time because of the commercial sensitivity of the merger. However, with the permission of AOL's counsel, who was present in court when the document was made public, the government was able to reveal its content.

Boies then tried to determine how significant Microsoft economic witness Richard Schmalensee thought the note on this document was, in reference to the trial, and whether or not it was inconsistent with his testimony. The economist insisted it was not. "Would you agree that you are here in this courtroom, to represent Microsoft?" asked Boies. To which Schmalensee replied, "Is this just a blanket attack on my ethics?" "No I am not interested in your ethics I am just interested in your answers," said Boies to laughter from the courtroom. Schmalensee said he owed his client an accurate presentation of their case and he owed the court at the truth. "I have not invested 30 years in a scholarly reputation to put it at risk," he said. Later Boies asked Schmalensee if he thought Microsoft's first waver agreements with OEMs could be anti-competitive. When Boies seemed to tire of Schmalensee's exhaustive ability to avoid answering his questions, the judge stepped in. "Dean Schmalensee, assume for a moment that Microsof t is a monopoly, would these agreements be anti-competitive?" To which Schmalensee replied: "I don't know your honor." Judge Jackson closed the trial until August 10, when both sides will present their proposed findings. "It has been almost pure pleasure," he said, "Let's keep it that way."

The latest probe into security lapses by former CIA Director John Deutch
could result in reprimands or stronger action against a number of
present and former senior CIA employees, intelligence officials said

material in its memory, disappeared from the State Department. Last
week's "Love Bug" e-mail virus, which infected scores of government
computers, further showed vulnerabilities of government computers.

The CIA said the "ILOVEYOU" virus showed up on fewer than a dozen
computers at the agency, none of which held classified information.
The CIA has two separate computer systems - one secure, one not.

Deutch, who concedes he unintentionally violated security rules, kept
classified CIA documents on home computers that also contained an
America Online account that he and other members of his family
routinely used to connect to the Internet.
