Amistad (1997)

But for Seors Ruiz and Montes,
who steered the Amistad
to these shores
under constant threat of like fate,
we might never have heard of
this massacre, this bloodbath.
But for their bravery, these villains
would have escaped justice.
But they've not. They've not.
Do you know the difference
between a cow and a cabbage?
A brick and a bear?
Or how about...
a polecat and a president?
The Spanish government hopes you
don't have much more sense than that.
This case isn't about murder,
mayhem or massacres.
It's not about anything
that dramatic.
This case is about knowing the
difference between here and there.

The American Presidency Project

Lyndon B. Johnson

XXXVI President of the United States: 1963-1969

192 - Remarks to Members of the American Physical Society.

April 26, 1967

Dr. Townes, Nobel Laureates, most distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen:

In the last week I have visited with the Presidents of our neighboring republics in this hemisphere. Yesterday I came in contact with the leaders of the European community.

I am very thankful that I have the chance tonight to keep a commitment that I had to come here and meet with you, because no group of Americans is more important or really has more to offer freedom in the world and peace in the world and this great land that we all love than you--the American Physical Society.

The world of physics is a new world to most Americans. It burst upon us first as the source of an awesome instrument of war back in 1945--a weapon which continues to profoundly affect the course of our history. And we are only now beginning to truly realize the impact which the physical sciences hold for the work of peace in the world.

We are becoming aware that physics is the source of a great ferment that has penetrated every aspect of our intellectual life:

--It has shaken our ideas of space and of time.

--It has replaced our old ideas of nature with the theory of relativity, and with new theories of the atom, and

--It is very rapidly revolutionizing the most practical aspects of our civilization. So I think it is good for all of us who are here in this room tonight to realize that when the history of our times is written the names of scientists such as Einstein, Oppenheimer, von Neumann, Fermi and many others will figure very prominently among those who helped not only to defend this Nation and preserve it, but to build it. In a time of war, they gave us the nuclear bomb--but they also started us on the course of peaceful nuclear power. They started us to new advances in medicine; to the computer revolution whose scope we are just beginning to imagine.

Those subjects I explored in depth today in connection with the trust and the hope and prayer that we have that we will be able to evolve a nonproliferation treaty.

These men that I have mentioned were great patriots. I think that this Nation and liberty-loving people throughout the world will forever remain in their debt.

The breathless advance of scientific thought has produced a world which our fathers would never have imagined. The transistor radio, the microwave communication links, television, and atomic energy are based on knowledge which had not even been discovered when you were children. The new ultraminiature devices which guide our spaceships and are giving us new medical tools are all the products of the last 10 years. In our universities and in our industries, creative minds are daily discovering new truths and other creative minds put these truths to work for the benefit of all humanity.

We just must not relax our efforts. I have seen in Europe this week, in Asia last month, and in Latin America within the fortnight that the whole world now looks to science to help it meet its growing need--and that need is great for food, for better health, and for a better life. But it looks, too, to science to broaden its horizons, to provide a fresh new view of man and the universe, and, above all, to conquer our ancient prejudices.

You members of the American Physical Society are the workers on the frontiers of understanding. Science is so powerful as a force for change in the world that scientists must play a most important and an increasing role in the international affairs of the world. The country will need the help of scientists, including a large and strong contingent of physicists, if we are ever to be able to deal effectively with the central problems of the present and the future, to deal with the problems of peace in the world, and the welfare of three-quarters of the population of the earth who tonight live on the narrow edge of existence.

I am very privileged that you should ask me to come here. I am very grateful for the contribution you have made. I need your help and your support in the trials and tribulations that go with the leadership that is incumbent upon this great land of ours.

I commend you for the role that you have played in the development of physics in this country. I commend you for the role that you have played in photography. And I commend you for your leadership in fostering international understanding. That is the thing that we need most.

Every day, good people, wise people, say to me, "Why can't we have a political settlement? Why can't we understand our fellow human beings? Why can't we negotiate a solution? Why do men have to die?"

And I ask myself that every morning and I reflect on it every evening.

I want to negotiate. I want a political solution. I want--more than any human being in all the world--to see the killing stopped. But I can't just negotiate with myself.

Maybe somehow, some way, sometime there will be somebody willing to sit down at the table and talk instead of kill, discuss instead of fight, reason instead of murder.

And when they do, I will be the first one at that table--wherever it is.

I should like to conclude now by saying to you that I look forward to your contributions to the progress of mankind in the future, because I have said to that dedicated public servant and my cherished friend, Dr. Hornig, "I know of no group anywhere that has spent more time and more effort in the present to try to bring about a better world." Thank all of you so much.

Note: The President spoke at 9:57 p.m. in the Main Ballroom at the Sheraton-Park Hotel in Washington

HISTORY

AUGUST 31, 1939 : GERMANY PREPARES FOR INVASION OF POLAND

At noon, despite threats of British and French intervention, Nazi leader Adolf Hitler signs an order to attack Poland, and German forces move to the frontier. That evening, Nazi S.S. troops wearing Polish uniforms staged a phony invasion of Germany, damaging several minor installations on the German side of the border. They also left behind a handful of dead German prisoners in Polish uniforms to serve as further evidence of the alleged Polish attack, which Nazi propagandists publicized as an unforgivable act of aggression.

At dawn the next morning, 58 German army divisions invaded Poland all across the 1,750-mile frontier. Hitler expected appeasement from Britain and France–the same nations that had given Czechoslovakia away to German conquest in 1938 with their signing of the Munich Pact. However, neither country would allow Hitler’s new violation of Europe’s borders, and Germany was presented with an ultimatum: Withdraw by September 3 or face war with the Western democracies.

At 11:15 a.m. on September 3, a few minutes after the expiration of the British ultimatum, Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain appeared on national radio to announce solemnly that Britain was at war with Germany. Australia, New Zealand, and India immediately followed suit. Later that afternoon, the French ultimatum expired, and at 5:00 p.m. France declared war on Germany. The European phase of World War II began.

Operation Himmler

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Operation Himmler (less often known as Operation Konserve or Operation Canned Goods) was a 1939 false flag project planned by Nazi Germany to create the appearance of Polish aggression against Germany, which was subsequently used by Nazi propaganda to justify the invasion of Poland. Operation Himmler was arguably the first act of the Second World War in Europe.

The American Presidency Project

Richard Nixon

XXXVII President of the United States: 1969 - 1974

343 - Joint Statement Following Discussions With President Tito of Yugoslavia.

October 30, 1971

AT THE invitation of the President of the United States of America, Richard Nixon, the President of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Josip Broz Tito, accompanied by Mrs. Broz and their party, is paying a State visit to the United States. Following their Washington stay from October 28 to October 30, 1971, President Tito and Mrs. Broz and their party are to visit several points of interest in other parts of the country, remaining in the United States until November 2, 1971.

The meetings between the two Presidents, which took place in a cordial, frank and friendly atmosphere, provided the opportunity for comprehensive discussion of the principal issues on the current international scene. Full and mutual respect was accorded the views expressed by both sides in the talks, which covered areas of agreement and areas where differences existed. Each side presented its full and candid views on a broad range of topics which included, in addition to Yugoslav-US relations, European security, the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia, Africa, the developing countries, the international monetary situation, and others. In the course of the visit, problems of environment and international measures for the control of illicit narcotics traffic were also discussed.

The two Presidents devoted particular attention to the importance of guaranteeing peace and stability by the peaceful settlement of disputes and by adherence to the principles of independence, mutual respect and the full equality of sovereign states, regardless of divergence or similarity in their social, political and economic systems, in full accordance with the spirit and principles of the United Nations Charter.

They welcomed the continuing growth of cooperation throughout the world and increased reliance on participation in negotiations to reconcile the interests of all nations, large and small, in a world of indivisible peace and interdependence.

It was emphasized in this regard that Yugoslavia's policy of nonalignment has been a significant factor in international relations. Countries following such a policy, together with the rest of the world, can make an active contribution to the resolution of world problems and to the more favorable evolution of international relations.

Presidents Tito and Nixon stressed that meaningful disarmament and arms control measures, as well as productive economic and social development, are inter-related factors of peace, stability, and progress in the world. The two Presidents reviewed the problems and needs of the developing countries and the efforts these countries are making in order to improve their position, as well as the possibilities and interest of the international community to assist them in this, particularly in view of the present economic and monetary situation in the world.

Presidents Tito and Nixon agreed that, since their last meeting, measurable progress has been made in the search for lasting peace and security in Europe. They believe that it is possible to take further significant steps along those lines which would serve the interests not only of the countries of Europe and the Mediterranean basin, but of world peace generally. They expressed their strong view that a firm peace and true security are indivisible and can be attained only in Europe as a whole, and not in only one or another part of it. They are convinced that each of the European and other interested states has an indispensable role in the construction of a Europe in which reconciliation, peace, and security are fully assured to all its peoples.

Both sides expressed the belief that general improvement in the international atmosphere and the broadening of the area of negotiations and cooperation must be supported by urgent efforts to achieve peaceful settlements of the more critical and dangerous conflicts, particularly those in the Middle East and South Asia. Each side stated its view on Southeast Asia.

President Tito conveyed to President Nixon his impressions from his recent meetings with the leaders of various countries. He acquainted President Nixon with the activities of Yugoslavia in the international field, and also with certain domestic questions concerning the Constitutional amendments and the economic development of the country. President Nixon reaffirmed the interest of the United States in the independence and nonaligned position and policy of Yugoslavia.
President Nixon advised President Tito of the current initiatives of the United States Government in international relations, of his contacts with world statesmen and of the new economic policy of the United States. President Tito expressed his great interest in the foreign policy initiatives of the United States Government and in its important role in international affairs.

Presidents Tito and Nixon expressed satisfaction with the development of Yugoslav-US bilateral relations in all fields in the year since their last meeting. Noting that consultations between the two countries had broadened significantly at all levels on matters of mutual interest, the two Presidents reaffirmed their conviction that extensive bilateral exchange on all topics has served the interests of the two countries and of world peace, and resolved that these consultations should be continued and further extended.

The two Presidents also agreed that in the further development of cooperation in fields of common interest, particular attention should be paid to the more advanced forms of economic relations including industrial cooperation, joint investment, cooperation on third markets, etc., to new, broader joint programs in scientific and technological research; and to working out a long-term program of cultural and artistic exchange.

They expressed the conviction that relations between the US and Yugoslavia, characterized by equality and complete mutual respect, represent an important factor for the peace and stability of Europe and the world in general, and serve the alms of broad international understanding. Guided by these goals, and in the interests of the further development of friendly relations between the two countries, the two Presidents resolved to continue the useful practice of the exchange of mutual contacts.

The two sides will base their cooperation and relations on lasting foundations in accordance with the understanding achieved and in the spirit of the principles reflected in this joint statement.

NASA

Landsat 1

Landsat 1 • Landsat 2 • Landsat 3 • Landsat 4 • Landsat 5 • Landsat 6 • Landsat 7 • Landsat 8

Landsat 1 was launched on July 23, 1972; at that time the satellite was known as the Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS). It was the first Earth-observing satellite to be launched with the express intent to study and monitor our planet’s landmasses.

To perform the monitoring, Landsat 1 carried two instruments: a camera system built by the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) called the Return Beam Vidicon (RBV), and the Multispectral Scanner (MSS) built by the Hughes Aircraft Company (El Segundo, CA; NASA contract NAS 5-11255).

The RBV was supposed to be the prime instrument, but the MSS data were found to be superior. In addition, the RBV instrument was the source of an electrical transient that caused the satellite to briefly lose altitude control, according to the Landsat 1 Program Manager, Stan Weiland.

The MSS instrument was flown as the secondary and highly experimental instrument. “But once we looked at the data, the roles switched,” relates Stan Freden, Landsat 1 Project Scientist.

The MSS recorded data in four spectral bands—a green, red, and two infrared bands.

To help understand the data and to explore the potential applications of this new technology, NASA oversaw 300 private research investigators. Nearly one third of these were international scientists.

These researchers came from a wide array of Earth science disciplines. They evaluated the usefulness of Landsat data to their respective fields.

In the foreword of the U.S. Geological Survey’s “ERTS-1 A New Window on Our Planet,” published in 1976, then-director of the USGS, Dr. V. E. McKelvey, wrote: “The ERTS spacecraft represent the first step in merging space and remote-sensing technologies into a system for inventorying and managing the Earth’s resources.”

Landsat 1 operated until January 1978, outliving its design life by five years. The Landsat 1 Multispectral Scanner acquired over 300,000 images providing repeated coverage of the Earth’s land surfaces. The quality and impact of the resulting information exceeded all expectations.

Note of Interest

Landsat 1 was built on a weather satellite platform—which is why the satellite so closely resembles the Nimbus weather satellites.

I find myself thinking of some "memories" of when I was assigned to the USS Wainwright. The ship had left port for a short regional deployment and I stayed back because I had a medical appointment on base. Or something like that. Not really sure why I didn't leave with the ship but it was because of some appointment on base. After that appointment, there was a period before the ship was due back when I was assigned to work in an office there on base. I liked the assignment because I had to wear my dress uniform and I liked that because I got to wear all my ribbons. I didn't have any ribbons until we were in the Persian Gulf and so most of my ribbons were from that Operation Praying Mantis combat engagement. There were two other petty officers in the office; they might have been CPO's, but maybe Petty Officer First Class's. They didn't really have any work for me to do in there so they had me crumpling up pages of documents that were going into a burn bag because they were classified. They told me to take my time and pace myself because they didn't have any other work for me but I "remember" that I went through all the documents too soon and then didn't have anything to do. But then I was watching one of them typing up some regular report on a computer and he didn't know how to touch type so I volunteered to type it for him. I think the word processor was Gemstar. He told me I had saved him a lot of time. I had to leave and report back to the Wainwright the next day I think.

1974: Kidnap attempt on Princess Anne

Princess Anne and her husband Captain Mark Phillips have escaped an apparent kidnap attempt in which four people were wounded.

The royal couple were returning to Buckingham Palace along Pall Mall when their chauffer-driven Rolls-Royce was forced to halt by another car which blocked their route.

A man appeared from a light coloured vehicle and fired six shots, all of which it is said were not directed at the royal couple, but left four people in hospital.

Undergoing surgery

The Princess' private detective Inspector James Beaton fired at the man before he was wounded and the chauffer Alex Callender, one of the Queen's senior drivers, was also injured.

They have both now been taken to Westminster Hospital were they are understood to be undergoing surgery.

It's a book, from our planet. It's very entertaining, but it is fiction nonetheless.

When we go to court,
I need you to speak.
I'm not
an advisor of any kind.
I cannot speak for the others.
Cinque, the others, they say you can.
They say you're the big man here.
I am not.
What's this I hear about a lion?

Amistad (1997)

- Two sailors are making claims.
- What season is it?
- Pardon?
- I said, what season is it?
I don't understand what you mean.
There are two ways of knowing
without consulting a calendar.
The leaves on the maple trees
have all gone,
and the fact that the President is
not at home on Pennsylvania Avenue.
Tell me, sir...
Do you really think Van Buren
cares about the whims
of an 11-year-old girl
who wears a tiara?

And that task, sir, as you
well know, is crushing slavery.
Your record confirms you're an
abolitionist, sir, even if you won't.
- And whether or not you admit it...
- Mr. Joadson.
..you belong with us.
You're quite the scholar,
Mr. Joadson, aren't ya?
Quite the historian.
Let me tell you about
that quality, if I might.
Without an accompanying mastery of at
least one-tenth its measure of grace,
such erudition is worthless, sir.
Now, you take it from one who knows.
If you gentlemen will excuse me.
- We know we aimed high asking you...
- Well, aim lower!
Find yourselves someone
whose inspiration blossoms
the more you lose.
If the court
awards them to Spain,
they'll be taken to Cuba
and executed.
If the two lieutenants prevail,
they'll likely to sell them to Spain,
and they'll be executed.
If Montes and Ruiz are successful...
I'm a little confused.
What are they worth to you?
We're discussing the case,
not its expense.
Of course. Well, the case is much
simpler than you think, Mr. Tappan.
It's like anything - land,
livestock, heirlooms, what have you.
Livestock.
Yes. Consider -
the only way one may sell or purchase
slaves is if they are born slaves,
as on the plantation.
- I'm right, aren't I?
- Yes.
- So, are they?
- "Are they?"
Yes. Born slaves,
as on a plantation.
We're not certain,
but we very much doubt it.
Let's say they are.
Then they are possessions,
and no more deserving of
a criminal trial than a bookcase.
On the other hand,
let's say they aren't slaves,
in which case they were
illegally acquired.
Forget mutiny, forget piracy,
forget murder.
Those are irrelevant occurrences.
Ignore everything but
the pre-eminent issue at hand.
The wrongful transfer
of stolen goods.
Either way, we win.
Sir, this war must be waged on
the battlefield of righteousness.
The what?
It would be against
everything I stand for
to let this deteriorate into
an exercise in legal minutia.
Mr. Tappan, I'm talking about
the heart of the matter.
As am I.
It is our destiny,
as abolitionists and as Christians,
to save these people.
These are people, Mr. Baldwin,
not livestock.
Did Christ hire a lawyer
to get him off on technicalities?
He went to the cross, nobly.
You know why?
To make a statement.
