STARGATE UNIVERSE

AIR, PART 3

EPISODE NUMBER - 103

ORIGINAL U.S. AIR DATE - 10.09.09

EARTH. THE PENTAGON. Colonel David Telford is sitting in Doctor Lee's lab, meditating. Nearby is one of the communication stones resting on top of its control box. A woman in civilian clothing, Doctor Mehta, walks in and goes over to him just as he wakes up and tilts his head from side to side to work out the stiffness.

MEHTA: You've been sitting here since Rush made contact. Let somebody else take a shift.

TELFORD: I'm not leaving this chair. I've been on this project for the last six months and I'll be damned if I ...

(He trails off, looking vague and confused. He tilts his head again a few times.)

MEHTA: Colonel?

(To her eyes, Telford is still in the chair but he has been taken over by Colonel Young. He looks up at her for a moment, then looks down at his uniform and his hands. He lifts his head and looks at Telford's image on the computer screen in front of him.)

YOUNG: This-this is strange.

MEHTA: Doctor Rush, is that you?

YOUNG: No, it's Colonel Young. I need you to put me in a room with General O'Neill.

(He stands up slowly, adjusting to being in a fitter body than the one he left behind, then turns to the doctor.)

YOUNG: I'm gonna need you, too.

DESTINY. Colonel Telford, now in Young's body, is lying flat on his face on the floor as Lieutenant Tamara Johansen kneels over him. Nearby, two of the communication stones are on top of the control box.

JOHANSEN: Sir, I told you not to get up.

TELFORD (rolling painfully onto his back): What did he do to himself?

JOHANSEN: He's got cracked ribs, more bruises than I can count and a concussion that resulted in neurapraxia.

TELFORD: Well, that's just great!

(Johansen helps him to sit up and looks across to the woman who is standing nearby.)

JOHANSEN: Chloe?

(However, it's not Chloe in the mind of that particular body at present.)

MEHTA: Doctor Mehta.

JOHANSEN: Can you help me, please?

(Mehta comes over and takes Telford's other arm and the two women help him to his feet.)

EARTH. GENERAL O'NEILL'S OFFICE. Young and Chloe, in the bodies of Telford and Mehta, are in Jack O'Neill's office. He walks over to Chloe/Mehta.

O'NEILL: You know, I had some of my favourite arguments with your father.

ARMSTRONG (smiling): Are you saying you won some?

O'NEILL: ... Depends on who you ask.

Also, it is obvious that I am a control subject in a behavior patterns experiment. I do not appreciate being forced to stand up like some E-5 to a figurative H-bomb test so I can soak up the radiation and smile for the camera. I am an indepedant person with a great deal of initiative and I have a lot of important objectives to meet. So get out of my way and let me get back to work.

O'NEILL: Listen, Major Green'll be escorting you to see your mother. Please give her my condolences.

ARMSTRONG: Thank you.

(She nods to Young/Telford and leaves the room, followed by Major Green. O'Neill closes the door and turns to Young.)

O'NEILL: So, how is it going out there, really?

YOUNG: I don't know what Rush has told you, but we may not have much time left. The ship's very old - it's falling apart.

O'NEILL: Fix it.

YOUNG: We're trying. Even if we can get the life support working, we don‘t have much food and water.

O'NEILL: Then go get some.

YOUNG: We're not supposed to be there, sir. These are the wrong people in the wrong place and, as a group, they're just not qualified.

O'NEILL: Oh, please! I wasn't qualified to lead that first team through the Stargate ...

YOUNG: I understand that, sir ...

O'NEILL: In the past dozen years or so, we've sent hundreds of teams through that thing.

(He thinks for a moment, then smiles ruefully.)

O'NEILL: I think the bottom line is: none of us are qualified.

YOUNG: I just think we're gonna get to a point very soon where everyone on board should get a chance to say goodbye.

O'NEILL (nodding): Understood.

Subject: Rainbow Six

So here's the thing. I seem to have pre-cognitive abilities.

Other times I think other people direct their pre-cognitive abilities at me.

Then I think again of what I wrote about meta-fiction. That is fiction created within fiction. It is a book of fiction that you see while watching a film, for instance. The book of fiction doesn't actually exist in the real of world of the movie viewer. The book of fiction exists only in that film. That is meta-fiction.

So here I am wondering if "Rainbow Six" is meta-fiction to describe what is going to happen in this world artificial.

BECAUSE BECAUSE BECAUSE what else are we doing here?

As I said I think this world exist only as some kind of elaborate video game.

The video game "SimCity" doesn't require you to win or lose the game. You can lose and the game will end but there isn't a way to actually win the game. It just goes on forever theoretically.

It also doesn't require violence initiated by the user. In other worlds, as the user you are not required to destroy anything inside the game.

You can though. You can enable the disaster mode and that will cause events to happen randomly such as earthquakes and tornadoes. But you can also disable that functionality so it doesn't happen.

Then going back to what I was initially going to write here about meta-fiction, I think again about what I was thinking just before I walked to lunch. I thought about that overall premise to that television series "Heroes." I thought about how one person with abilities could be affected by another person with abilities.

The "Matt Parkman" character for instance has an ability but he can be affected by the abilities of another person if they direct their ability at him.

I always sense a few things that I *think* people are saying, or thinking. How would I ever know if I was actually sensing their actual thoughts? I have no way to tell.

I wonder if I do have that ability but I can't or won't reproduce it to prove it actually works for me. I mean, who really wants to be known to have that ability?

That rainbow I saw today in the sky was startling because it was so large. It was also fully formed. I imagine people twenty miles away could see it. But of course that's just an illusion. The rainbow doesn't actually exist at a fixed point. It is about the light refracting in the atmosphere and people twenty miles away would be a point where the sun angle is different. So I don't maybe they could still see it from far away.

I keep thinking of how the sunlight glinted off the sprinkling rain as I walked out of the restaurant just a few seconds before I turned and saw the rainbow.

I think also about the behavior of a man and woman that walked in while I was eating. I was the only customer in there. I wondered about the dialog I heard. They both got telephone calls just after walking in. Or so it seemed. I guess that was their cell phones they were looking at. The man walked out and I never did see him again before I left. They seemed to be in there for take-out. The woman sat there and I wondered if she was waiting for him to come back.

As soon as they walked in I heard the man say "Just a second" and I think he was talking to the person behind the counter which was behind me as I faced the front door.

So my line of thought is they, as you can reasonably assume by now, are going to start dropping clues around me just before they start doing stuff. I have seen that happen a lot of times before around here. And they have to make it reasonably easy for me to find so I look back for matches I have referenced previously in my journal. I think for the longest time they were trying to test my pre-cognitive abilities and I am just not going to play their game. Just because I have an ability doesn't mean I have to use it.

So why the rainbow? That seems to be something someone couldn't create. But what about predictions? Could a person well educated in the atmosphere of the planet Earth predict when a rainbow would become visible. I bet they could.

And then finally: what happened? I have tried this routine many times and then nothing happened. Maybe it's the "Little Green Man" again.

Maybe they really are planning to do something this time and that is why I suddenly felt compelled to transmit information to you and that is because I am aware on some paranormal level that I am on to them.

THE KILLERS

"All These Things That I've Done"

When there's nowhere else to run
Is there room for one more son
One more son
If you can hold on
If you can hold on, hold on
I wanna stand up, I wanna let go
You know, you know - no you don't, you don't
I wanna shine on in the hearts of men
I wanna mean it from the back of my broken hand

Another head aches, another heart breaks
I am so much older than I can take
And my affection, well it comes and goes
I need direction to perfection, no no no no

Help me out
Yeah, you know you got to help me out
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the back burner
You know you got to help me out

And when there's nowhere else to run
Is there room for one more son
These changes ain't changing me
The gold-hearted boy I used to be

Yeah, you know you got to help me out
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the back burner
You know you got to help me out
You're gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, you're gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, you're gonna bring yourself down

[x10]
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier

Yeah, you know you got to help me out
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the back burner
You know you got to help me out
You're gonna bring yourself down
You're gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the back burner
You're gonna bring yourself down
Yeah, you're gonna bring yourself down

Over and in, last call for sin
While everyone's lost, the battle is won
With all these things that I've done
All these things that I've done
