Truth (2015)

- As in five days from now?
- If you don't think...
- I need interviews.
I need to get the whole team to New York
and I need... First, I need Dan.
Where is he?
Hurricane Frances
is pounding the Florida coast...
harder than a strongman trying
to win a Kewpie doll at a carnival!
I'm gonna kill him.
You may not have to.
Maybe I can get him on a puddle jumper
to Austin for the Strong interview.
I got an e-mail from the colonel about
the documents saying, "I feel better."
- Yeah?
- A memorandum for record...
is a memo to nobody, right'?
So why does Killian file them?
Well, Killian knows suspending a guy
this protected is a big deal.
He's trying to do the right thing here, but
he needs a paper trail to insulate himself.
Which means Bush's protection
must've come from higher up than Killian.
You're thinking Hodges?
He was Killian's direct supervisor.
I'll call you back.
You have
reached the Hodges' residence.
Please leave a message.
General Hodges,
Mary Mapes from 60 Minutes.
I was wondering
if you could give me a call back.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 03/24/07 3:52 AM
I find myself thinking of some "memories" of when I was assigned to the USS Wainwright. The ship had left port for a short regional deployment and I stayed back because I had a medical appointment on base. Or something like that. Not really sure why I didn't leave with the ship but it was because of some appointment on base. After that appointment, there was a period before the ship was due back when I was assigned to work in an office there on base. I liked the assignment because I had to wear my dress uniform and I liked that because I got to wear all my ribbons. I didn't have any ribbons until we were in the Persian Gulf and so most of my ribbons were from that Operation Praying Mantis combat engagement. There were two other petty officers in the office; they might have been CPO's, but maybe Petty Officer First Class's. They didn't really have any work for me to do in there so they had me crumpling up pages of documents that were going into a burn bag because they were classified. They told me to take my time and pace myself because they didn't have any other work for me but I "remember" that I went through all the documents too soon and then didn't have anything to do. But then I was watching one of them typing up some regular report on a computer and he didn't know how to touch type so I volunteered to type it for him. I think the word processor was Gemstar. He told me I had saved him a lot of time. I had to leave and report back to the Wainwright the next day I think.

Aired 7-8p ET

Aired August 29, 2016 - 19:00 ET

BURNETT: So, let me just -- Donald Trump, Kayleigh, did respond not just on twitter but also on radio interview, he spoke specifically about this issue with Anthony Weiner, he said, asked whether it was relevant, that it was Huma Abedin's husband to the Hillary Clinton campaign. Here is what he said.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

TRUMP: Terribly. I mean, I said a long time ago that she's married to a guy who is a disaster. I've known him for a long time. Here is a guy that what he has done over the internet is disgusting. He's a pervert and just a very sick guy. And she is married to him.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BURNETT: Should he be going there, Kayleigh?

KAYLEIGH MCENANY, DONALD TRUMP SUPPORTER: Yes. Because here is how it's relevant what he said in the statement. You know, first, I want to say, that, you know, as women, we can all empathize with Huma. He praised her today, saying she's very wise for stepping away from this situation as she should have done. But this is not personal where I think Maria is wrong that this isn't personal, it absolutely compromised all of us here in the public. Because she has access to highly sensitive information.

We know that Huma, at one point, left highly sensitive information in her car in a foreign country. So, there's a history of having this around her and have this at her home. To have potentially CIA asset names in a home with Anthony Weiner that could have been exploited, that could have been picked up by other people, that's when a private matter becomes a public matter. So, he is right to put the spotlight on this. He said she was wise for walking away. We can all empathize with her. But when you're in a highly public position, the public is in fact at risk.

BURNETT: Keith, this is a guy who has been known for oversharing.

KEITH BOYKIN, HILLARY CLINTON SUPPORTER: Yes. That's definitely true. I mean, Anthony Weiner has a history. I mean, the idea that the Trump campaign is trying to make this an issue is a big stretch. It's an over reach of the worst sort. And it has the potential to backfire politically. I mean, if you want to go out this route, Kayleigh. And let's talk about Steve Bannon's domestic abuse, let's talk about Cory Lewandowski, let's talk about Paul Manafort. Let's talk about all the Trump campaign aides. We've gotten to the polls -- we're not just talking about the candidates.

We're talking about the spouses of the aides of the candidates. That is so far nuanced and distinct from the actual people who are in the race that I think it has the potential to backfire and create a backlash. Most people know that a candidate's spouse -- not even a candidate's spouse but an aide to a candidate's spouse has very little connection to what the candidate himself or herself will do in office.

(CROSSTALK)

[19:10:33] MCENANY: First of all, the accusations against Bannon and Lewandowski were never proven in a court of law. So, it's irresponsible to throw that out there as facts. Not only that, Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Shaffer came out today, and said that the scenario with Huma was a dream for foreign intelligence operative. These are military leaders that have come out and said that this is a dangerous scenario. So, for you to deny that it is a dangerous scenario. So, for you to deny that it is --

CARDONA: Are you saying that Weiner is a foreign intelligence operative?

MCENANY: No, he said that it is a dream. The scenario there was a dream for a foreign intelligence operative.

CARDONA: What does that mean? Are they saying that Huma shared this with the public?

MCENANY: No, no, no.

CARDONA: It makes no sense. It's ridiculous.

MCENANY: No, Maria. You have to understand. Foreign intelligence operatives look for scenarios in personal lives and they try to blackmail individual who are in positions of high power. A lieutenant colonel said this, none of us are military leaders here at this table.

Killian documents authenticity issues

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

During the Killian documents controversy in 2004, the authenticity of the documents themselves was disputed by a variety of individuals and groups. Proof of authenticity is not possible without original documents, and since CBS used only faxed and photocopied duplicates, authentication to professional standards would be impossible regardless of the provenance of the originals. However, proving documents inauthentic does not depend on the availability of originals, and the validity of these photocopied documents has been challenged on a number of grounds, ranging from alleged anachronisms in their typography to issues pertaining to their content.

Proportional fonts

One of the initial doubts bloggers raised about the memos was the use of proportional fonts. Most typewriters in 1972 used fixed-width fonts, and, according to The Washington Post, all of the authenticated documents from the TexANG were typed using fixed-width fonts commonly associated with typewriters.

Several experts interviewed by the media suggested that the proportional fonts in the documents indicated likely forgery. John Collins, vice president and chief technology officer at Bitstream Inc., the parent of MyFonts.com, stated that word processors that could produce proportional-sized fonts cost upwards of $20,000 at the time. Allan Haley, director of words and letters at Agfa Monotype, stated "It was highly out of the ordinary for an organization, even the Air Force, to have proportional-spaced fonts for someone to work with." William Flynn, a forensic document specialist with 35 years of experience in police crime labs and private practice, said the CBS documents raise suspicions because of their use of proportional spacing techniques. The Washington Post also indicated the presence of proportional fonts as suspicious because "of more than 100 records made available by the 147th Group and the Texas Air National Guard, none used the proportional spacing techniques characteristic of the CBS documents".

Bill Glennon, a technology consultant in New York City with typewriter repair experience from 1973 to 1985, said experts making the claim that typewriters were incapable of producing the memos "are full of crap. They just don't know." He said there were IBM machines capable of producing the spacing, and a customized key — the likes of which he said were not unusual — for creating the superscript th.

Thomas W. Phinney II, program manager for fonts at Adobe Systems, responded to Glennon's statement by saying that the memos could not have been produced with either the IBM Executive or IBM Selectric Composer, which had been suggested as possibilities, due to differences in letter width and spacing. Phinney says that each time a typeface was redeveloped for mechanical technologies with different width factors, the width and designs are altered, which is why even if Press Roman had been intended to look like Times Roman, the result is significantly different.

Phinney's analysis was based on the fact that the typography of the Killian documents could be closely matched with a modern personal computer and printer using Microsoft Word with the default font (Times New Roman) and other settings. Therefore the equipment with which the Killian documents were actually produced must have been capable of matching the typographical characteristics produced by this modern technology.

As Phinney explained, the letterspacing of the Times New Roman font used by Microsoft Word with a modern personal computer and printer employs a system of 18 units relative to the letter height (em), with common characters being 5 to 17 units wide. (The technology allows even finer variability of character widths, but the 18 unit system was chosen for compatibility with the Linotype phototypesetting and earlier hot-metal versions of the font.) In contrast, the variability of character widths available on early 1970s typewriters using proportional letterspacing was more limited, due to the mechanical technology employed. The most sophisticated of these machines, the IBM Selectric Composer, used a system of 9 units relative to the letter height, in which all characters were 3 to 9 units wide. Less complex machines used fewer widths.

Differences in individual character widths accumulate over the length of a line, so that comparatively small differences would become readily apparent. Because of the differing character widths employed, the letterspacing exhibited by the Killian documents (matching that produced by a modern computer and printer) could not have been produced with a mechanical typewriter using proportional letterspacing in the early 1970s. At the time the documents were purportedly created, the matching letterspacing could only have been produced using phototypesetting or hot-metal printing. Since it is not a realistic possibility that Killian would have had these documents printed, Phinney concluded that they are almost certainly modern forgeries.

Desktop magazine in Australia analysed the documents in its November 2004 issue and concluded that the typeface was a post-1985 version of Times Roman, rather than Times New Roman, both of which are different in detail to IBM Press Roman.

CBS Defends Bush Memos

Since the 60 Minutes broadcast, news organizations, conservative critics and bloggers have questioned the authenticity of the documents, pointing to type styles that seem the product of a modern computer rather than a 1970s-era typewriter. Relatives and fellow officers of Killian have also said they doubt the documents are real.

CBS says it stands by its story. The network has not revealed how it obtained the documents.

On Monday's CBS Evening News, Rather said his original report used several different techniques to make sure the memos were genuine, including talking to handwriting and document analysts and other experts who strongly insist that the documents could have been created on a typewriter in the 1970s – as opposed to a modern-day word-processing software program, as some have charged.

"Everything that's in those documents, that people are saying can't be done, as you said, 32 years ago, is just totally false. Not true. Proportional spacing was available. Superscripts were available as a custom feature. Proportional spacing between lines was available. You can order that any way you'd like," said document expert Bill Glennon.

Richard Katz, a software designer, found some other indications in the documents. He noted that the letter "L" is used in those documents, instead of the numeral "one." That would be difficult to reproduce on a computer today.

Starbuck: You don't have to worry about me. My taste for heroics vanished about the time I engaged that first Cylon fighter. (He nods and turns away.) Lee? Zack failed basic flight.

Apollo: What?

Starbuck: Or at least he should've. But he didn't, because I passed him. His technique was sloppy and he had no feel for flying, but I passed him. Because he and I... Because I felt something and I let it get in the way of doing my job. And I couldn't fail him.

Yes, There Was a Moon Race

APRIL 1990

BY JAMES E. OBERG

The Soviets said it was a fraud, and many believed them. Now the USSR itself has acknowledged the truth.

When Apollo 11 astronauts touched down on the moon in the summer of 1969, they brought their spacecraft to rest in a lunar region whose name seemed appropriate to the occasion. The near-flawless voyage ended in the Sea of Tranquillity.

There had been, however, an earlier lunar visitor. Only hours before the US Apollo landing, an unmanned lunar probe approached the moon, flying in as part of a last, desperate effort by the Soviet Union to arrive there first. It crashed. In retrospect, it seems that the scene of that lunar mishap was equally fitting. The place was called the Sea of Crises.

The full irony of these events, however, was lost on most Americans. They were unaware of the multiple crises plaguing the USSR's man-on-the-moon push. Indeed, few were--or are even now--aware that a serious Soviet lunar program existed. But it did.

Dan Rather got it right George W. Bush DID go AWOL

byLefty Coaster

I always suspected something like this was the case. The new issue of Texas Monthly delves into the long neglected story of George W. Bush less than stellar military career in the Texas Air National Guard. The Texas Monthly lays out the surprisingly complicated mechanizations that led to the Junior Bush landing this plumb spot in the T.A.N.G.

That George W. got special treatment at a time when draftees were likely to end up slogging through the jungles of Viet Nam shouldn't come as too much of a surprise to anyone who knows how America routinely gives special treatment to the offspring of the 1%. What did come as a surprise was why George W. stopped flying and that he apparently did so with the tacit approval of his commanding officers in TANG, who who viewed Bush's move to Alabama to work on Winton "Red" Blount's campaign for the U.S. Senate as the the Junior Bush's effective departure from their unit and apparently from his 6 year obligation to the National Guard as well.

But the CBS documents that seem destined to haunt Rather are, and have always been, a red herring. The real story, assembled here for the first time in a single narrative, featuring new witnesses and never-reported details, is far more complex than what Rather and Mapes rushed onto the air in 2004. At the time, so much rancorous political gamesmanship surrounded Bush’s military history that it was impossible to report clearly (and Rather’s flawed report effectively ended further investigations). But with Bush out of office, this is no longer a problem.

While the Linkes were there, Bush’s former commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Jerry Killian, allegedly told them that Bush had stopped flying because he became afraid to land the plane. “He was mucking up bad, Killian told us,” Janet said to a Florida newspaper. (Jan Peter died in a car accident in 1973.)

Alvy Moore, 75; Co-Starred in 'Green Acres'

May 07, 1997 MYRNA OLIVER TIMES STAFF WRITER

Alvy Moore, veteran actor best remembered for his role as county agent Hank Kimball on the long-running television series "Green Acres," has died. He was 75.

Moore, who was especially known for his comedic roles, died Sunday at his Palm Desert home.

He co-starred with Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor in the popular CBS series from 1965 to 1971.

Also a familiar face because of his work in commercials, Moore had guest roles in more than 30 series including "Newhart," "Hill Street Blues," "Fantasy Island," "The Waltons," "Little House on the Prairie," "How the West Was Won," "The Beverly Hillbillies," "Love American Style," "Playhouse 90," "Daniel Boone," "Evening Shade" and "Frasier."

Before settling into his metier in television, Moore found Hollywood a tough place to get a job in the waning years of the old studio system of hiring actors on contract.

"Several times I have been on the verge of giving up acting entirely, and dedicating myself to manufacturing," he told The Times in 1954. At that time, he was a partner in a wrought iron foundry that specialized in tile-topped tables.

Trained at the Pasadena Playhouse, Moore had some early success on stage. He replaced David Wayne as Ensign Pulver with Henry Fonda in the Broadway hit "Mister Roberts." Moore also found work in regional and summer theaters.

He appeared in a score of motion pictures, including "A Boy and His Dog," which he helped produce. Other roles were in "Susan Slept Here," "The Wackiest Ship in the Army," "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," "No Business Like Show Business" and "War of the Worlds."

Born in Vincennes, Ind., and reared in Terre Haute, Moore studied drama at Indiana State Teachers College. He served in the Marines during World War II and was involved in the key battle for Iwo Jima.
