WASHINGTON — When Vice President Dick Cheney's former chief of staff goes on trial today on charges of lying about the disclosure of a CIA officer's identity, members of Washington's government and media elite will be answering some embarrassing questions as well.
The estimated six-week trial of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby will pit current and former Bush administration officials against one another and, if Cheney is called as expected, will mark the first time a sitting vice president has testified in a criminal case.
The case has largely played out in below-the-radar court hearings as prosecutors and defense lawyers have mapped the boundaries of the trial. Despite speculation that Bush would pardon Libby to avoid the spectacle of a trial, the date has arrived.

After World War II, which saw the introduction of U.S. "5-star" officers who outranked Washington, both Congress and the President revisited the issue of Washington's rank. To maintain George Washington's proper position as the first Commanding General of the United States Army, he was appointed, posthumously, to the grade of General of the Armies of the United States by congressional joint resolution Public Law 94-479 January 19, 1976, approved by President Gerald R. Ford on October 11, 1976. The law established the grade as having "rank and precedence over all other grades of the Army, past or present,"clearly making it superior to General of the Army. The Department of the Army Order 31-3, issued on March 13, 1978 had an effective appointment date of July 4, 1976. The rank ensures that no United States military officer outranks George Washington

A4D/A-4 Skyhawk Light Attack Bomber
Douglas built 2,960 Skyhawks between 1954 and 1979. Built small to be cost effective and so that more could be accommodated on a carrier, the lightweight, high-speed bombers were affectionately nicknamed "Heinemann's Hot Rod" (after Douglas designer Ed Heinemann), the Bantam Bomber, Mighty Mite and Scooter.
The Navy's Blue Angels flight demonstration squadron flew the A-4 Skyhawk II from 1974 to 1986.

With the deactivation of Composite Squadron 8 in September 2003, the last TA-4 Skyhawks were retired from Navy service. In the following account, a former aerial photographer remembers the aircraft as a superior photographic platform.
My first exposure to the A-4 Skyhawk came in 1970 when I was in junior high school. My father took me to the Cape May, N.J., National Air Races where the Air Barons of NAS Glenview, Ill., performed a tactical aerial display for the crowd of thousands. Flying A-4Ls they demonstrated toss bombing, in-flight refueling and formation fly-bys. I thought the “Scooter” was a really neat, noisy little aircraft.

The A-4 Skyhawk was an American attack aircraft originally designed to operate from United States Navy aircraft carriers. The aircraft was designed and produced by Douglas Aircraft Corporation (later McDonnell Douglas)
The diminutive Skyhawk soon received the nicknames "Scooter," "Bantam Bomber," "Tinker Toy Bomber," and, on account of its nimble performance, "Heinemann's Hot-Rod."
The A-4's nimble performance also made it suitable to replace the F-4 Phantom II when the Navy downsized their aircraft for the Blue Angels demonstration team until the availability of the F/A-18 Hornet in the 1980s.
