The GBU-12 PAVEWAY II laser-guided bomb is an American aerial bomb, based on the Mk 82 500-pound general-purpose bomb, but with the addition of a nose-mounted laser seeker and fins for guidance. A member of the PAVEWAY series of weapons, PAVEWAY II entered into service c. 1976. It is currently in service with U.S. Air Force, US Navy, US Marine Corps, Colombian Air Force, and various NATO air forces.

GBU-12 bombs (along with the balance of the PAVEWAY series) are produced by defense contractors Lockheed Martin and Raytheon. Raytheon began production after purchasing the product line from Texas Instruments. Lockheed Martin was awarded a contract to compete with Raytheon when there was a break in production caused by transferring manufacturing out of Texas.

The US Government has upgraded GBU-12 production versions to include GPS guidance modes. Lockheed Martin is the sole source for US Navy purchases of this version. Raytheon sells upgraded GBU-12s to the US Government and other nations. Raytheon production of the GBU-12 is centered in Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico. Lockheed Martin production is centered in Pennsylvania.

Laser-guided bombs are often labeled "smart bombs" because they are able to follow a non-ballistic trajectory when laser designation of the intended target is undertaken. According to Raytheon's face sheet for the Paveway 2, 99 deliveries of guided munitions will yield a circular error probable (CEP) of only 3.6 feet, vice a CEP of 310 feet for 99 unguided bombs dropped under similar conditions.

The AH-64 Apache is the United States Army's principal attack helicopter, and is the successor to the AH-1 Cobra. The AH-64 is a two-seat attack helicopter powered by two General Electric T700 turboshaft engines. The crew sits in tandem, with the pilot sitting behind and above the copilot-gunner in an armored crew compartment. The AH-64 is armed with a 30mm M230 chain gun and carries a mixture of AGM-114 Hellfire and Hydra 70 rockets on four hard points mounted on its stub-wing pylons.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AGM-114_Hellfire

The development of the Hellfire Missile System began in 1974 with the US Army requirement for a "tank-buster", launched from helicopters to defeat armored vehicles.[1] Production of the AGM-114A started in 1982. The Development Test and Evaluation (DT&E) launch phase of the AGM-114B took place in 1984. The DT&E on the AGM-114K was completed in Fiscal Year (FY)93 and FY94. AGM-114M did not require a DT&E because it is the same as the AGM-114K except for the warhead. The early variants were laser guided with recent variants being radar guided. The Hellfire has matured into a comprehensive weapon system capable of being deployed from rotary- and fixed-wing aircraft, naval assets and land-based systems against a variety of targets.

Proclamation 4944—National P.O.W.-M.I.A. Recognition Day, 1982

June 1st, 1982

By the President of the United States of America

A Proclamation

Since the Revolutionary War, when General George Washington complained of the treatment accorded to captured soldiers of the Continental Army, the United States has recognized the uncommon hardships experienced by our soldiers held prisoner during times of war. Called upon to defend American ideals while undergoing extreme adversity in violation of fundamental moral standards and the international codes and customs for the treatment of prisoners of war, our soldiers have fulfilled their duty to their services and country.

Similarly, our country has recognized the acute suffering experienced by the families of our soldiers held captive or missing in action. The uncertainty these service families live with day-to-day surely touches the heart of every American.

The Congress has by Joint Resolution designated July 9, 1982 as National P.O.W. M.I.A. Recognition Day and on this day we should recognize the special debt owed to our fellow citizens who gave up their freedom and their families in the service of our country. We must also remember our still missing servicemen, for whose families, relatives and friends the anguish and bitterness of war are enduring aspects.

Our Nation must not forget and will continue to seek answers to their fates.

Now, Therefore, I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, do hereby designate July 9, 1982 as National P.O.W.-M.I.A. Recognition Day, a day dedicated to all former American prisoners of war, to those still missing, and to their families. I call on all Americans to join in honoring those who made the uncommon sacrifice of being held captive in war, and their loved ones.

I call upon State and local officials and private organizations to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 1st day of June, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and eighty-two, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and sixth.

RONALD REAGAN

Lisa: [gasps] They're recruiting people with subliminal messages!

[outside, a horn honks. Otto is about to board a bus for the nearest naval base. Lisa shouts out of her window]

Otto, what are you doing?

Otto: I dunno. I just got an urge to join the Navy.

Lisa: You're being brainwashed!

Otto: Yeah, probably. Ee-van eht niojh! [gets on the bus, which drives away]

% Lisa goes to warn L. T. Smash that his band is being used as a
% clandestine recruiting tool by the government.

Lisa: L. T., thank God you're here. The government's playing subliminal messages in your videos!

Smash: Subliminal messages? Do you have any idea of how insane that sounds?

[Lisa notices an anchor tattoo on Smash's arm]

Lisa: Is that a Navy tattoo?

Smash: A Navy tattoo? Do you have any idea of how insane that sounds?

[an electric fan stirs up a breeze that causes Smash's shirt to flop open, revealing a large tattoo of a ship and the slogan, "I [heart] THE NAVY". Lisa gasps. Then she notices that the first period in Smash's "L. T. Smash" nameplate is just pasted on. She peels it off, revealing "LT. Smash".

Lisa: Lieutenant Smash?

Smash: Yeah, that's right. Lieutenant L. T. Smash. [pulls off his crew-cut wig, revealing an even shorter crew-cut]

Lisa: A wig! But, but your pant legs ...

[Smash pulls a couple of ripcords on his waistline. His pant legs spread out, revealing the traditional flared effect that Naval uniforms have]

Oh, how could you soil the good name of Star Blitzzz Promotions?

Smash: Oh, come on, Lisa, we've always used pop stars to recruit people, going back to Elvis [shows Lisa a picture of Elvis's Army days]. Then there was Sgt. Pepper's [show the Beatles, in Sgt. Pepper uniforms, attacking a dummy], The Captain and Tenille, and the KISS Army.

Lisa: But you have recruiting ads on TV. Why do you need subliminal messages?

Smash: It's a three-pronged attack. Subliminal, liminal, and superliminal.

Lisa: Superliminal?

Smash: I'll show you. [opens the window, and shouts at Lenny and Carl, who are standing on the corner] Hey, you! Join the Navy!

Carl: Uh, yeah, all right.

Lenny: I'm in.
