Hoshi Sato, played by Korean-American actress Linda Park, is a fictional character in the science fiction television series Star Trek: Enterprise.
Relatively little of Sato's background has been explored in the series. It is known that she briefly suffered from space sickness and is also claustrophobic. The fourth season episode "Observer Effect" revealed that Sato was once dishonorably discharged from Starfleet for running a floating poker game and breaking the arm of a Starfleet instructor who tried to break it up (she has a black belt in aikido). She was subsequently allowed to rejoin Starfleet because of her linguistic skills.
According to art prepared but not entirely seen on-screen in the episode "In a Mirror, Darkly", of computer records of the USS Defiant, Sato was born in Kyoto, Japan, and was instrumental in the development of the universal translator. She eventually marries a man named Takashi Kimura, and retires from Starfleet with the rank of lieutenant commander. Sato and her husband die in 2246 when the colony where they live, Tarsus IV, is stricken by a food shortage, and Governor Kodos orders the deaths of half of the colony's population. Hoshi and her husband are among those executed.

JUPITER'S MOON CALLISTO MAY HIDE SALTY OCEAN
Jupiter's second largest moon, Callisto, may have a liquid ocean tucked under its icy, cratered crust, according to scientists studying data gathered by NASA's Galileo spacecraft.
The Galileo findings, to be published in the Oct. 22 issue of the journal Nature, reveal similarities between Callisto and another of Jupiter's moons, Europa, which has already displayed strong evidence of a subsurface ocean.
"Until now, we thought Callisto was a dead and boring moon, just a hunk of rock and ice," said Dr. Margaret Kivelson, space physics professor at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and principal investigator for Galileo's magnetometer instrument, which measures magnetic fields around Jupiter and its moons. "The new data certainly suggest that something is hidden below Callisto's surface, and that something may very well be a salty ocean."

The Enterprise crew is in the process of deploying the second in a series of subspace amplifiers that will allow better communications with home, when an unidentified ship drops out of warp. Captain Archer hails the vessel, but it ominously refuses to respond and just warps away. T'Pol dismisses the "silent treatment" by stating that not every species has motives that can be understood in human terms. So Archer turns his attention to a more pressing concern — doing something special for Lt. Malcolm Reed's upcoming birthday. Archer breaks in the new subspace amplifiers by calling Reed's parents on Earth in hopes of learning his favorite food. He's a bit surprised to learn during the awkward conversation that the lieutenant's own parents don't know what he likes to eat. So the captain gives a reluctant Ensign Hoshi Sato the "mission" of discovering this bit of information about Reed in time for his birthday.
Meanwhile, Hoshi pursues her "secret mission" by speaking with Reed's best friend, his sister and various other relatives, all to no avail. Heeding T'Pol's suggestion to take a more direct approach, Hoshi sits with Reed in the Mess Hall and casually prompts him for what he likes to eat — causing Reed to think she's asking him for a date.
As Reed, Tucker and the captain celebrate their victory over drinks in the Armory, Hoshi interrupts to present Malcolm with a birthday cake. Malcolm cuts into the cake and, realizing it's pineapple, wonders how on Earth they knew that was his favorite.

Silent Enemy is the 11th episode (production #112) of the television series Star Trek: Enterprise.
Archer and Hoshi attempt to get to know Malcolm Reed better in order to surprise him on his birthday. Meanwhile, the Enterprise encounters a non-communicative alien ship which fires upon them. The Enterprise is unable to defend itself as it was not fitted with phase cannons before it left spacedock. Trip and Reed insist that they can construct the weaponry as well as the engineering staff at Jupiter Station. Archer orders the Enterprise to return to Earth to have the phase cannon fitted but authorises Trip and Reed to go ahead with creating and fitting their version.
In the Ready Room, Archer speaks to Reed's parents. It is his birthday in two days, September 2nd. Reed's mother says that the last time they heard from him was a call from San Francisco to say that he had been assigned to the Enterprise. Reed's father asks what Reed's duties are aboard the ship. Archer says that Reed is the armory Officer and Reed's father replies that his grandfather would be pleased as he was an Ordnance Officer in the Royal Navy. Reed is the first member of his family for generations to not join the Navy, his father says disapprovingly. Archer continues by asking what Reed's favourite food is, in order to make him a special dinner as a birthday treat. Reed's parents say that Reed never made any requests for food and always ate what was put in front of him. At that point, Reed's father ends the conversation.
Act Five
In the armory, Archer, Trip and Reed drink beer in celebration of the good job they performed yesterday. Archer grants them permission to sleep in tomorrow with a smile. Hoshi enters with a flight case. Archer opens it and produces a birthday cake for Reed, saying with another smile that it was no trouble at all. Reed cuts the cake and says "Pineapple! That's my favourite! How on Earth did you know?". "We have our sources", says Hoshi with a grin.

Codex History -- A Coveted Trophy For The Intellectually Curious
The Codex Leicester is a folio of scientific notes and observations that Leonardo da Vinci made during a several-year stay in Milan beginning in 1508. As usual, he divided his time between painting - he was busy working on his luminous "Virgin and Child with Saint Anne" - and continuing his studies on geometry and human anatomy. But in what we now call the Codex Leicester, Leonardo also kept notes on his experiments with hydraulics and his observations about the relationship of the moon to the earth.
On Nov. 11, 1994, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates purchased it from Christie's for $30.8 million.
In the preface he wrote to the Seattle Art Museum catalog for the upcoming show, Gates makes clear that his fascination with the codex has to do with Leonardo's scientific inquisitiveness.

Anticipating the convergence of computers and television, Microsoft Corp. and NBC today turned on the MSNBC cable channel and its companion Internet information site - entering the soon-to-be-crowded 24-hour news business.
The TV channel, whose slogan is "you're connected," signed on at 6 a.m. Pacific time, replacing NBC-owned America's Talking as a programming option in about 22.5 million cable households.

While leaving a speaking engagement at the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C., President Reagan and three others were shot and wounded by John Hinckley, Jr., who had previously stalked President Jimmy Carter and had a history of mental illness.
The motivation behind Hinckley's attack was an obsession with actress Jodie Foster.
Over the following years, Hinckley trailed Foster around the country, going so far as to enroll in a writing course at Yale University in 1980 when he learned that she was a student there after reading an article in People magazine. He wrote numerous letters and notes to her in late 1980. He called her twice and refused to give up when she indicated that she was not interested in him. Convinced that by becoming a national figure he would be Foster's equal, Hinckley began to stalk then-President Jimmy Carter — his decision to target presidents was also likely inspired by Taxi Driver. He wrote three or four more notes to her in early March 1981.
