YF-22: 29 September 1990

F-22: 7 September 1997

The F-22 Raptor is a fifth generation fighter aircraft which utilizes fourth generation Stealth technology. It was originally envisioned as an air superiority fighter for use against the Soviet Air Force, but is equipped for ground attack, electronic warfare and signals intelligence roles as well. Faced with a protracted development period, the prototype aircraft was designated YF-22 and, as F/A-22 during the three years before formally entering United States Air Force service in December 2005 as the F-22A. Lockheed Martin Aeronautics is the prime contractor and is responsible for the majority of the airframe, weapon systems and final assembly of the F-22. Along with Lockheed Martin, partner Boeing Integrated Defense Systems provides the wings, aft fuselage, avionics integration, and all of the pilot and maintenance training systems.

Boeing Jet Makes The Cut -- Pentagon Picks Firm And Lockheed Martin To Create Prototypes Of 21St-Century Fighter

By Polly Lane, Stanley Holmes

Seattle Times Business Reporters: Seattle Times News Services

The Pentagon yesterday chose Boeing as a finalist in the competition to develop the major jet fighter of the 21st century, positioning the Seattle-based company to potentially become the world's dominant builder of military as well as civilian jets.

Boeing and Lockheed Martin each won contracts to build prototypes of the new fighter, called the Joint Strike Fighter, or JSF, versions of which will serve three branches of the U.S. armed forces and the British Royal Navy.

Episode 1 - "Pilot, Part 1"/"Pilot, Part 2"

JACK: Hey! Can you hear me? Hey! Can you hear me? [to Kate] I need that water. [He gives the pilot some water] Hey. Here you go. Hey.

PILOT: How many survived?

JACK: At least 48. Does anything feel broken?

PILOT: No, no. Just my head's a little dizzy, that's all.

JACK: Yeah. It's probably a concussion.

PILOT: How long has it been?

JACK: Sixteen hours.

PILOT: Sixteen? Has anybody come?

JACK: Not yet.

PILOT: Six hours in, our radio went out. No-one could see us. We turned back to land in Fiji. By the time we hit turbulence, we… we were a thousand miles off course. They're looking for us in the wrong place.
