Colleagues say UW shooting victim was being stalked
SEATTLE - In the last weeks of her life, Rebecca Griego was taking drastic steps to avoid an ex-boyfriend whose violence and threats had left her visibly shaken.
She changed her cell phone number. She moved. And early last month, Griego sought a restraining order, posting Jonathan Rowan's picture around her office so co-workers could serve him with the papers if he showed up.
"He has threatened to hurt me again," Griego, 26, wrote in court papers on March 6. "He ... called me to tell me I cannot find him but he can find me (knows my place of work) and to look over my shoulder because I would see him again."
On Monday, colleagues identified Griego as the victim of an apparent murder-suicide in her University of Washington office.
Officials said her assailant was an ex-boyfriend, in his 40s, who was the subject of a restraining order from the young UW staffer. Both were declared dead at the scene.
"She was left helpless and very frustrated, because nobody would intervene until something happened," said Jim DeLisle, Griego's boss at the Runstad Center for Real Estate Studies. "She did everything that a person in her situation could have done, other than leaving town."
University Assistant Police Chief Ray Wittmier said officers who responded at about 9:30 a.m. Monday to a call of shots fired found the two people in an office on the fourth floor of Gould Hall, the university's architecture building.
Court records show Griego was granted a temporary restraining order on March 6, saying Rowan had threatened her, her sister and the two women's dogs.
In applying for the order, she wrote that on Jan. 5, Rowan threw glass candlestick holders at her in a drunken rage, then tackled and punched her. The two were living together at the time.

Months of stalking end with 2 dead at UW
Rebecca Griego called her ex-boyfriend Jonathan Rowan "a psycho from the past." He wouldn't stop calling her office at the University of Washington. When she no longer would answer the phone, he harassed her sister and threatened to kidnap her dogs.
On Monday morning, Rowan found Griego alone in her fourth-floor office in Gould Hall and fatally shot her before killing himself.

On the day Allen's representatives exercised an option to buy the Seahawks and began a marketing campaign to regain fans, the new owner was absent from a ceremony that had all the pomp of a peace-treaty signing.
The Mercer Island billionaire left yesterday's festivities to Gov. Gary Locke, King County Executive Ron Sims and more than a dozen other state and local dignitaries, whose simpatico emotions turned the affair at the Seahawk training facility into a lovefest.
While the politicos congratulated each other and anyone else who played a role in helping keep the team in Seattle, Allen was in England watching tennis pal Monica Seles, who was upset yesterday at Wimbledon.

Capricorn One is a 1978 thriller movie about a Mars landing hoax.
The setting is the late 1970s, and the first manned mission to Mars is on the pad ready to launch. NASA authorities (Holbrook) realize that a faulty life support system has doomed any chance of a successful flight, so for political and financial purposes they decide to fake the landing rather than scrub the mission.
Minutes before launch, the bewildered crew (Brolin, Waterston, and Simpson) are removed from the capsule and flown to an old abandoned United States Army Air Corps base deep within the desert. The televised launch proceeds on schedule, but the public is unaware that the spacecraft (Capricorn One) is unmanned.
At the remote base, the astronauts are informed they will fake the television footage from Mars and it is their patriotic duty to participate. Initially they refuse, but authorities imply their careers and the lives of their families are at stake if they do not cooperate.
The astronauts remain in captivity for a period of several months and are filmed "landing on Mars" within a studio located at the base. The conspiracy is known to only a select few NASA officials, but alert technician Elliot Whittier (Walden) stumbles across something absurdly impossible. The television transmissions are arriving ahead of the spacecraft telemetry. He speaks to a journalist friend Robert Caulfield (Gould) about his concerns.
When Whittier mysteriously disappears, Caulfield becomes suspicious and begins investigating the Mars mission, resulting in several attempts upon his life. Meanwhile back at the abandoned military base, the astronauts begin to realize that if the conspiracy is to remain intact, they will eventually have to be eliminated. The astronauts' suspicions become reality when their empty capsule burns in space during reentry. The captive astronauts immediately stage a daring escape and attempt to evade military forces in order to expose the conspiracy. Stranded in the desert, they try to make their way back to civilization while being pursued by a pair of helicopters.
In the end, Colonel Brubaker (Brolin) is the only crew member to avoid capture. Caulfield's investigation leads him to the desert, where he finds the military base and the set, and with the help of a cropduster pilot (Savalas), he manages to rescue Brubaker. The film ends with Caulfield and Brubaker arriving at the astronauts' memorial service, exposing the conspiracy in dramatic fashion.
