The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were rescued last night when their boat broke down in freezing temperatures on Winnipeg's Red River.
The elderly royal couple, on a golden jubilee tour of Canada, were crossing the river in a water taxi when its engine failed last night.
A second water taxi, travelling behind the royal boat, had to be lashed to the stricken vessel to tow it to safety and the royals' destination.
As the 76-year-old Queen climbed ashore with her husband, who is an admiral, she said: "That was interesting."
Both Philip, 81, and the Queen appeared to be suffering from the cold, with temperatures, barely above freezing, worsened by a chill wind.
Before boarding the boat at Winnipeg's The Forks - where the Red River meets the River Assiniboine - bound for Tache Quay at Saint-Boniface, the royals had sat through a 30-minute outdoor cultural display.
Philip looked frozen and furious while the Queen, in a woollen grey coat, was ashen-faced.
They were not offered rugs to keep them warm as they sat on a dais on the banks of the Red River.

Before boarding the boat at Winnipeg’s The Forks - where the Red River meets the River Assiniboine - bound for Tache Quay at Saint-Boniface, the royals had sat through a 30-minute outdoor cultural display.
Prince Philip looked frozen and furious while the Queen, in a woollen grey coat, was ashen-faced. It seems officials may have been caught out by unseasonal, plummeting temperatures.
One said: "We haven’t had autumn - we’ve gone straight from summer to winter."
Later, there was more outside entertainment for the royal couple in the grounds of Winnipeg’s Legislative Building. But this time the Queen wrapped up against the cold in a fur coat . Although the temperatures were not sub-zero, it was so cold that the ballet dancers, staging a royal performance, wore thermal underwear.
The Queen rededicated the city’s restored Golden Boy statue and threw a switch to light up the controversial naked sculpture which stands atop of a dome on the provincial parliament. A minority campaign, mounted earlier this year, to either remove or cover the 17ft-tall Golden Boy’s genitalia flopped and the visiting royal illuminated the statue in all its glory.
The Queen may be having trouble with her pet corgis - for when she met the Manitoba Corgi Association, she asked whether the dogs on show fought each other.
The royal corgis have a history of snapping at each other and have even bitten their owner. Seeing seven corgis, the Queen asked: "Are there any fights?"

LUFKIN - Finding the piece of debris that might give clues to why the space shuttle Columbia broke apart on re-entry has been described by one NASA official as like "looking for a needle in a haystack."
Monday, the haystack got bigger.
While lawmen and volunteers in several East Texas counties were beating the piney woods and lake shores for more remnants of Columbia, the size of the "debris field" was enlarged to take in a portion of West Texas and a longer stretch of Louisiana.
Authorities did report a major find Monday. A man found the shuttle's nose cone buried about six feet in the ground on his land just outside the town of Hemphill. The cone was said to be in good shape and searchers planned to excavate it today.
Most of the significant debris and body parts apparently have been found between Nacogdoches and the Sabine River, but some fragments may be found as far east as the New Orleans suburbs and west of the point over Dallas-Fort Worth where the shuttle began to disintegrate.

Making new memories

Bittersweet reminders at Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport were made sweeter Monday for the astronaut's children with the dedication of the renamed airport and a bronze statue of him, said his wife, Evelyn Husband.
"This will be a new memory for them," she said, referring to Laura, 13, and Matthew, 8. "What I've tried to do this whole year is have new memories for them so they know that all of our fun and memories didn't stop on Feb. 1."
Matthew had experienced particular difficulty viewing photographs of Husband displayed at the airport since the Feb. 1 tragedy that killed his father and six space shuttle Columbia crewmates, Evelyn had said in a Jan. 9 telephone interview.
"There's this huge, gorgeous picture of Rick, and it's hard," she said then. "Laura and I will stand there and look at it. (Matthew) looks at anything but."
The dedication ceremony, therefore, was important for the children to attend, she said Monday.

And so he- his first English assignment at Andover was to write about some highly emotional time in his life, and he was writing about the time when his sister had died. And he was talking about it had made him cry, and he had used the word "tears" several times already in his essay. And he decided- remembering what his mother told him, he decided he needed to find another word for t-e-a-r-s.
So he got out his thesaurus and looked up t-e-a-r-s, and his next sentence was, "And the lacerates ran down my cheek." He turned in his paper, got it back two days later with this big, bold pen circled around, "See me immediately." And George said that the first thought that entered his mind was, "My God. I've been here one week. I may not make it to week two."

Bush's public drilling partnership made its debut in April 1982 under the name of Arbusto, but the "Bust" label the company had taken on may have hampered it. In what he has described as a "marketing" move, the vice president's son changed the name to Bush Exploration and in June issued a new prospectus.
The offering was still a flop. Bush sought to raise $6 million but he drummed up just $1,141,000, less than he'd raised privately in each of the previous two years. He said oil prices had been sliding a bit and drilling funds were losing their appeal. Tax deductions weren't as generous. (In 1985, the investors who did get in were offered 10 cents on the dollar to bail out.)
By 1984, the outlook was bleak. "We didn't find much oil and gas," said Michael Conaway, Bush's chief financial officer. "We weren't raising any money."

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - The missile cruiser USS Princeton, badly damaged by a mine in the northern Persian Gulf, has been pulled out of action and sent to a gulf port for assessment, U.S. military officials said today.
Discussing the mine blasts that damaged the U.S. warships, he said what was apparently an unusually sophisticated mine damaged the rudder and rudder shaft of the billion-dollar Princeton. The blast injured three crewmen and lifted the vessel party out of the water.
The USS Tripoli, meanwhile, remained on duty after patching a 16-by-20-foot hole in its hull blown by a cruder mine 2 1/2 hours earlier and 10 miles away.
Neal said no minesweepers had cleared the area where the explosions occurred because it was believed to have been relatively free of mines. He said the allies would "continue an aggressive countermine campaign."
The two explosions appeared to jeopardize any plans for an amphibious landing by the Marine task force positioned off the Kuwait coast - at least in the area where the ships were operating.
The Tripoli, an 18,000-ton helicopter assault carrier, is serving as flagship for a newly mounted mine-clearing operation in the area. The 2-year-old Princeton had been on anti-aircraft surveillance duty.
There were varying reports on the extent of damage to the 570-foot Princeton.
Military officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there was one report that the hull was damaged in the middle, with cracks in the superstructure above the main deck.
They did not say to which gulf port the Princeton had headed for repairs.
A dozen mine sweepers from the U.S., Saudi and European navies are at work to clear out the thousands of mines the Iraqis are believed to have sown in coastal waters to deter any landing by the 15,000 Marines stationed aboard about 30 ships in the gulf.
The Marines are prepared to strike at Kuwaiti beaches by helicopter and assault boat as part of the anticipated ground offensive.
U.S. officials, however, were worried by the explosions, especially because the Princeton appeared to have been damaged by a so-called "influence mine" - a device the Iraqis were known to possess but had never before used.
