This Is What I Think.

I am going to watch today shortly the DVDs for the first two "Highlander" films

And try to watch them all the way through without stopping to make any relevant statements about those racketeering productions. I mean, why should I even bother anymore? They believe it. Why should I care what they're trying to get away with.

I cannot recall when I last watched that 1986 film "Highlander," or even the first time I watched it, although I might have seen it when it premiered but that is just a guess, but I can still recall that scene where he, or at least I guess I can recall it correctly, where he is on the bottom of the lake and he is chopping down the long stalks of the water plants on the bottom of the lake with his sword. I thought of that before, well maybe not the context of "Highlander," but there was always something creepy to me about seeing those similar water plants at the bottom of the lake in Coeur d'Alene when I was swimming the 2.4 mile course for that Ironman triathlon they have out there every year since 2003.

I wonder why I have these memories of two particular training exercises on the Taylor. One was that simulator where the locked us into a ship compartment, banged on the bulkhead to simulate a missile hit, and then flooded the room with cold river water as we were supposed to fix the hole. The compartment would have flooded if I hadn't open a porthole in the bulkhead. Before that was the boiler room simulator where I was the Number 1 hose man and had to go into the building with the water covered with burning oil under the deck grating. I had to push the flames back with the hose and I was so close to hyperventilating that I was breaking the face mask seal of my breathing apparatus. It was also so dark I couldn't see a single thing. I had no idea the fire was even out.

DAMN!!! The name of the character Phoebe portrays is "Amanda" in this movie. That was the name of my girlfriend in 1988. Amanda Busch, from Aberdeen, Scotland. Still haven't quite figured out what Aberdeen means. Phoebe portrays the wife of the star of the movie.

ADMIRAL STOCKDALE

James Bond Stockdale 1923-2005

On September 9, 1965 at the age of 40, Stockdale, Commanding Officer, VF51 and Carrier Air Group Commander (CAG-16) was catapulted from the deck of the USS Oriskany for what would be the final mission. While returning from the target area, his A-4 Skyhawk was hit by anti-aircraft fire. Stockdale ejected, breaking a bone in his back. Upon landing in a small village

Stockdale wound up in Hoa Lo Prison, the infamous "Hanoi Hilton", where he spent the next seven years as the highest ranking naval officer and leader of American resistance against Vietnamese attempts to use prisoners for propaganda purposes. Despite being kept in solitary confinement for four years, in leg irons for two years, physically tortured more than 15 times, denied medical care and malnourished, Stockdale organized a system of communication and developed a cohesive set of rules governing prisoner behavior. Codified in the acronym BACK U.S. (Unity over Self), these rules gave prisoners a sense of hope and empowerment, which many credited with giving them the strength to endure their lengthy ordeal. Drawing largely from principles of stoic philosophy, notably Epictetus' The Enchiridion, Stockdale's courage and decisive leadership was an inspiration to POWs.

STOCKDALE, JAMES B.

Rank and organization: Rear Admiral (then Captain), U.S. Navy. Place and date: Hoa Lo prison, Hanoi, North Vietnam, 4 September 1969. Entered service at: Abingdon, Ill. Born: 23 December 1923, Abingdon, Ill.. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while senior naval officer in the Prisoner of War camps of North Vietnam. Recognized by his captors as the leader in the Prisoners' of War resistance to interrogation and in their refusal to participate in propaganda exploitation, Rear Adm. Stockdale was singled out for interrogation and attendant torture after he was detected in a covert communications attempt. Sensing the start of another purge, and aware that his earlier efforts at self-disfiguration to dissuade his captors from exploiting him for propaganda purposes had resulted in cruel and agonizing punishment, Rear Adm. Stockdale resolved to make himself a symbol of resistance regardless of personal sacrifice. He deliberately inflicted a near-mortal wound to his person in order to convince his captors of his willingness to give up his life rather than capitulate. He was subsequently discovered and revived by the North Vietnamese who, convinced of his indomitable spirit, abated in their employment of excessive harassment and torture toward all of the Prisoners of War. By his heroic action, at great peril to himself, he earned the everlasting gratitude of his fellow prisoners and of his country. Rear Adm. Stockdale's valiant leadership and extraordinary courage in a hostile environment sustain and enhance the finest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif.--Capt. James Bond Stockdale returned to American soil last week after more than seven years as a prisoner in North Vietnam. His hair was grayer than when he left, and a stiff leg dragged a bit as he stepped off an airplane here and thanked the waiting crowds for their loyalty.

Louise Marcus: Okay, now let me just see if I can get this straight. You come from another planet, and you're mortal there, but you're immortal here until you kill all the guys from there who have come here... and then you're mortal here... unless you go back there, or some more guys from there came here, in which case you become immortal here... again.

Conner MacLeod: Something like that.
