Oh yeah, I just found some notes in my journal about Barcelona. I wrote several times, that notes reminded me, of how in Barcelona in November 1989, and that cruise in the Med in 1989, of how I wrote that I spent my time there either as a sailor working as Shore Patrol or when not assigned to Shore Patrol I was evading Shore Patrol.

All of those memories I have of being on Shore Patrol mean something as well. Some of it probably represents converted memories in that I may have been on Shore Patrol while in the fleet. But I think it also means that I was, and probably still am, part of the Navy Criminal Investigative Service.

That in turn makes me think about the difference between Navy Shore Patrol and the Military Police (MP) of the other branches. SP and MP would seem to be equivalent, but I don’t think the SP designation is as formal as the MP designation. I think the Navy equivalent of MP is the Master At Arms enlisted ratings. These are people that specialize in law enforcement. They are enlisted petty officers and Chief Petty Officers. I think that our civilian law enforcement, commonly referred to as ‘police officers’ are the equivalent of Navy non-commissioned petty officers working as Master-At-Arms. I don’t know what the requirements are to become a civilian police officer, but I think the standard, across much of the country, is lower than it is to become a Navy MAA.

It is close to NCIS, in that MP is for Navy Military Police. CSI is also close to CIS, but it could also represent Crime Scene Investigation.

I must have dreamed a lot about the Falklands, but I don't remember any of it. It feels as though I was processing a tremendous amount of detail about that experience as I slept.

But what I started thinking about was a girl I knew long ago from Britain but that I think must definitely represent another operation where I was a combatant with the British; probably the First Gulf War. The "memory" is a woman named Briney, although I don't think that is how she spelled her name, or at, that is an important detail about the "memory" but I haven't figured that out yet. The most obvious clue about her name is that it have have something to do with the ocean or an operation with the Navy because 'briny' reminds me of the sea. So anyway, I was in Palma, in Magalluf (spelling?)specifically, and Larry Johnson, Mark Mogge, and I ventured into a bar that had some touristy name such as British Pub. Or maybe Larry and Mark found it the night before when I was on the Wainwright for duty, they told me about it, and we went back the next night. It was great because we were staying in port for the entire Christmas and New Year's period and we were spending it in my favorite port. Sometimes my duty was to drive the Shore Patrol van around town. So I think it was Mark that had told me about a great bar they had found that was full of gorgeous British women who were flight attendants. And he was right. We went back there every night talking with those women. I was making out one late night with that girl named Briney. I "remember" I was just sitting there and then we were kissing. I wasn't sure who started kissing who so I think that means she started kissing me and that is probably an important detail to the "memory" just as with Vicky Day. I "remember" a later time I started kissing her. She invited me to her apartment another time and I "remember" it was very cold. I said something a one point about how the chirping frogs sounded romantic. I was so drunk I didn't realize that was actually an alarm going off somewhere from some building that we had actually walked by. She commented about how Larry and I looked like "The Untouchables" from that old television series of the same name because we were wearing long coats. I left her a note under her door before we left port but I never heard from her again.

Very odd dream about trying to drive a car. The problem though was that I was in a seat behind the driver's seat and to the right. It seems like a forgotten dream that has recurred a million forgotten times. I was trying to navigate the car, it was some kind of van actually at that point, while in traffic, with heavy rain, going down a steep, long hill that is vaguely familiar as I analyze that image still in my waking mind. Sometime later I was stopped and I think it was a car at that point, perhaps at the bottom of the hill. I got and was trying to do something, perhaps rearranging the stuff in the car. There was a lot of stuff in there and I remember from that dream that it was somebody's else but I don't know whose it was and why it was in there. But one item I do remember was there was a garbage can full of garbage in it that was spilling over onto the driver's seat and I was moving that to another location in the back of the car. I was parked next to the garbage can from the house I was in front of and thought about leaving the garbage there but did not. Someone I knew from somewhere, perhaps in the place I had just left, walked by and said something that I don't remember.

It seems like a important detail that when I was trying to steer that van while seated in a rear seat, I could hardly see anything outside. All the side windows were blocked and I don't remember looking towards the rear of the van. Even the windshield was partially covered, leaving only a smaller clear area to see through.

Well, nobody was perfect, even here. "I don't go out of my way to kill things, John," Berg wanted to make clear to his physician colleague.

"I understand, Steve, but for every one we kill in proofing Shiva, we'll save a few hundred thousand in the wild, remember? And you take good care of them while they're here," he added. The test animals here lived an idyllic life, in comfortable cages, or even in large communal areas where the food was abundant and the water clear. The monkeys had a lot of room, with pseudotrees to climb, air temperature like that of their native Africa, and no predators to threaten them. As in human prisons, the condemned ate hearty meals to go along with their constitutional rights. But people like Steve Berg still didn't like it, important and indispensable as it was to the overall goal. Killgore wondered if his friend wept at night for the cute little brown-eyed creatures. Certainly Berg wasn't all that concerned with Chester-except that he might represent a canary, of course: That could indeed ruin anything, but that was also why Berg was developing "A" vaccine.

Bug Suspect Got Campaign Funds

A $25,000 cashier's check, apparently earmarked for President Nixon's re-election campaign, was deposited in April in a bank account of one of the five men arrested in the break-in at Democratic National Headquarters here June l7.

The check was made out by a Florida bank to Kenneth H. Dahlberg, the President's campaign finance chairman for the Midwest. Dahlberg said last night that in early April he turned the check over to "the treasurer of the Committee (for the Re-election of the President) or to Maurice Stans himself."

Stans, formerly secretary of Commerce under Mr. Nixon, is now the finance chief of the President's re-election effort.

Dahlberg said he didn't have "the vaguest idea" how the check got into the bank account of the real estate firm owned by Bernard L. Barker, one of the break-in suspects. Stans could not be reached for comment.

Reached by telephone at his home in a Minneapolis suburb, Dahlberg explained the existence of the check this way: "In the process of fund-raising I had accumulated some cash...so I recall making a cash deposit while I was in Florida and getting a cashier's check made out to myself. I didn't want to carry all that cash into Washington."

A photostatic copy of the front of the check was examined by a Washington Post reporter yesterday. It was made out by the First Bank and Trust Co. of Boca Raton, Fla., to Dahlberg.

Thomas Monohan, the assistant vice president of the Boca Raton bank, who signed the check authorization, said the FBI had questioned him about it three weeks ago.

According to court testimony by government prosecutors, Barker's bank account in which the $25,000 was deposited was the same account from which Barker later withdrew a large number of hundred-dollar bills. About 53 of these $l00 bills were found on the five men after they were arrested at the Watergate.

Dahlberg has contributed $7,000 to the GOP since l968, records show, and in l970 he was finance chairman for Clark MacGregor when MacGregor ran unsuccessfully against Hubert H. Humphrey for a U.S. Senate seat in Minnesota.

MacGregor, who replaced John N. Mitchell as Mr. Nixon's campaign chief on July l, could offer no explanation as to how the $25,000 got from the campaign finance committee to Barker's account.

He told a Post reporter last night: "I know nothing about it...these events took place before I came aboard. Mitchell and Stans would presumably know."

MacGregor said he would attempt this morning to determine what happened.

Powell Moore, director of press relations for the Committee for the Re-election of the President, told a reporter that Stans was unavailable for comment last night. Mitchell also could not be reached for comment.

In a related development, records made available to The Post yesterday show that another $89,000 in four separate checks was deposited during May in Barker's Miami bank account by a well-known Mexican lawyer.

The deposits were made in the form of checks made out to the lawyer, Manual Ogarrio Daguerre, 68, by the Banco Internacional of Mexico City.

Ogarrio could not be reached for comment and there was no immediate explanation as to why the $89,000 was transferred to Barker's account.

This makes a total of $114,000 deposited in Barker's account in the Republic National Bank of Miami, all on April 20.

The same amount -- $114,000 -- was withdrawn on three separate dates, April 24, May 2 and May 8.

Since the arrest of the suspects at 2:30 a.m. inside the sixth floor suite of the Democratic headquarters in the Watergate, Democrats have tried to lay the incident at the doorstep of the White House or at least to the Nixon re-election committee.

One day after the arrests, it was learned that one of the suspects, James W. McCord Jr., a former FBI and CIA agent, was the security chief to the Nixon committee and a security consultant to the Republican National Committee. McCord, now free on bond, was fired from both posts.

The next day it was revealed that a mysterious White House consultant, E. Howard Hunt Jr., was known by at least two of the suspects. Hunt immediately dropped from sight and became involved in an extended court battle to avoid testimony before the federal grand jury investigating the case.

Ten days ago it was revealed that a Nixon re-election committee official was fired because he had refused to answer questions about the incident by the FBI. The official, G. Gordon Liddy, was serving as financial counsel to the Nixon committee when he was dismissed on June 28.

In the midst of this, former Democratic National Chairman Lawrence F. O'Brien filed a $l million civil suit against the Nixon committee and the five suspects charging that the break-in and alleged attempted bugging violated the constitutional rights of all Democrats.

O'Brien charged that there is "a developing clear line to the White House" and emphasized what he called the "potential involvement" of special counsel to the President, Charles Colson.

Colson had recommended that the White House hire Hunt, also a former CIA agent and prolific novelist, as a consultant.

While he was Nixon campaign chief, Mitchell repeatedly and categorically denied any involvement or knowledge of the break-in incident.

When first contacted last night about the $25,000 check, Dahlberg said that he didn't "have the vaguest idea about it . . . I turn all my money over to the (Nixon) committee."

Asked if he had been contacted by the FBI and questioned about the check, Dahlberg said: "I'm a proper citizen. What I do is proper."

Dahlberg later called a reporter back and said he first denied any knowledge of the $25,000 check because he was not sure the caller was really a reporter for The Washington Post.

He said that he had just gone through an ordeal because his "dear friend and neighbor," Virginia Piper, had been kidnapped and held for two days.

Mrs. Piper's husband reportedly paid $l million ransom last week to recover his wife in the highest payment to kidnapers in U.S. history.

Dahlberg, 54, was President Nixon's Minnesota finance chairman in l968. The decision to appoint him to that post was announced by then-Rep. MacGregor and Stans.

In l970, Mr. Nixon appointed Dahlberg, who has a distinguished war record, to the board of visitors at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

A native of St. Paul, Minn., Dahlberg has apparently made his money through Dahlberg Electronics, Inc., a suburban Minneapolis firm that sells miniature hearing aids.

In l959, the company was sold to Motorola, and Dahlberg continued to operate it. In l964, he repurchased it.

In l966, the company established a subsidiary to distribute hearing aids in Latin America. The subsidiary had offices in Mexico City. Three years later, Dahlberg Electronics was named the exclusive United States and Mexican distributor for an acoustical medical device manufactured in Denmark.

Active in Minneapolis affairs, Dahlberg is a director of the National City Bank & Trust Co. of Fort Lauderdale. In l969, he was named Minneapolis' "Swede of the Year."

The day the music died

On this day in 1959, rising American rock stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson are killed when their chartered Beechcraft Bonanza plane crashes in Iowa a few minutes after takeoff from Mason City on a flight headed for Moorehead, Minnesota. Investigators blamed the crash on bad weather and pilot error. Holly and his band, the Crickets, had just scored a No. 1 hit with "That'll Be the Day."

After mechanical difficulties with the tour bus, Holly had chartered a plane for his band to fly between stops on the Winter Dance Party Tour. However, Richardson, who had the flu, convinced Holly's band member Waylon Jennings to give up his seat, and Ritchie Valens won a coin toss for another seat on the plane.

Holly, born Charles Holley in Lubbock, Texas, and just 22 when he died, began singing country music with high school friends before switching to rock and roll after opening for various performers, including Elvis Presley. By the mid-1950s, Holly and his band had a regular radio show and toured internationally, playing hits like "Peggy Sue," "Oh, Boy!," "Maybe Baby" and "Early in the Morning." Holly wrote all his own songs, many of which were released after his death and influenced such artists as Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney.

Another crash victim, J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, 28, started out as a disk jockey in Texas and later began writing songs. Richardson's most famous recording was the rockabilly "Chantilly Lace," which made the Top 10. He developed a stage show based on his radio persona, "The Big Bopper."

The third crash victim was Ritchie Valens, born Richard Valenzuela in a suburb of Los Angeles, who was only 17 when the plane went down but had already scored hits with "Come On, Let's Go," "Donna" and "La Bamba," an upbeat number based on a traditional Mexican wedding song (though Valens barely spoke Spanish). In 1987, Valens' life was portrayed in the movie La Bamba, and the title song, performed by Los Lobos, became a No. 1 hit. Valens was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.

Singer Don McLean memorialized Holly, Valens and Richardson in the 1972 No. 1 hit "American Pie," which refers to February 3, 1959 as "the day the music died."

Jack Johnson


Jack Johnson, byname of John Arthur Johnson (born March 31, 1878—died June 10, 1946), first black boxer to win the heavyweight championship of the world. Johnson is considered by many boxing observers to be one of the greatest heavyweights of all time.

Johnson fought professionally from 1897 to 1928 and engaged in exhibition matches as late as 1945. He won the title by knocking out champion Tommy Burns in Sydney on Dec. 26, 1908, and lost it on a knockout by Jess Willard in 26 rounds in Havana on April 5, 1915. Until his fight with Burns, racial discrimination had limited Johnson’s opportunities and purses. When he became champion, a hue and cry for a “Great White Hope” produced numerous opponents.

At the height of his career, the outspoken Johnson was excoriated by the press for his flashy lifestyle and for having twice married white women. He further offended white supremacists in 1910 by knocking out former champion James J. Jeffries, who had been induced to come out of retirement as a “Great White Hope.” The Johnson-Jeffries bout, which was billed as the “Fight of the Century,” led to nationwide celebrations by African Americans that were occasionally met by violence from whites, resulting in more than 20 deaths across the country.

In connection with one of his marriages, Johnson was convicted in 1912 of violating the Mann Act by transporting his wife-to-be across state lines before their marriage. He was sentenced to a year in prison and was released on bond, pending appeal. Disguised as a member of a black baseball team, he fled to Canada; he then made his way to Europe and was a fugitive for seven years.

In 1920 Johnson surrendered to U.S. marshals; he then served his sentence, fighting in several bouts within the federal prison at Leavenworth, Kan. After his release he fought occasionally and performed in vaudeville and carnival acts, appearing finally with a trained flea act. He wrote two books of memoirs, Mes Combats (in French, 1914) and Jack Johnson in the Ring and Out (1927; reprinted 1975). He died in an automobile accident.

In the years after Johnson’s death, his reputation was gradually rehabilitated. His criminal record came to be regarded as more a product of racially motivated acts than as a reflection of actual wrongdoing, and members of the U.S. Congress have on a number of occasions attempted to secure a posthumous presidential pardon for Johnson. His life story was lightly fictionalized in the hit play The Great White Hope (1967; filmed 1970), and he was the subject of Ken Burns’s documentary film Unforgivable Blackness (2004).

U.S. bombs Cambodia for the first time


U.S. B-52 bombers are diverted from their targets in South Vietnam to attack suspected communist base camps and supply areas in Cambodia for the first time in the war. President Nixon approved the mission--formally designated Operation Breakfast--at a meeting of the National Security Council on March 15. This mission and subsequent B-52 strikes inside Cambodia became known as the "Menu" bombings. A total of 3,630 flights over Cambodia dropped 110,000 tons of bombs during a 14-month period through April 1970. This bombing of Cambodia and all follow up "Menu" operations were kept secret from the American public and the U.S. Congress because Cambodia was ostensibly neutral. To keep the secret, an intricate reporting system was established at the Pentagon to prevent disclosure of the bombing. Although the New York Times broke the story of the secret bombing campaign in May 1969, there was little adverse public reaction.

Operation Menu

Operation Menu was the codename of a covert United States Strategic Air Command (SAC) bombing campaign conducted in eastern Cambodia and Laos from 18 March 1969 until 26 May 1970, during the Vietnam War. The targets of these attacks were sanctuaries and Base Areas of the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) and forces of the Viet Cong, which utilized them for resupply, training, and resting between campaigns across the border in the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam). The effects of the bombing campaign are disputed by historians.

An official United States Air Force record of US bombing activity over Indochina from 1964 to 1973 was declassified by US president Bill Clinton in 2000.

In his diary in March 1969, Nixon’s chief of staff, HR Haldeman, noted that the final decision to carpet bomb Cambodia ‘was made at a meeting in the Oval Office Sunday afternoon, after the church service’.

In his diary on 17 March 1969, Haldemann wrote:

Historic day. K[issinger]’s “Operation Breakfast” finally came off at 2:00 pm our time. K really excited, as is P[resident].

And the next day:

K’s “Operation Breakfast” a great success. He came beaming in with the report, very productive. A lot more secondaries than had been expected. Confirmed early intelligence. Probably no reaction for a few days, if ever.

The bombing began on the night of 18 March with a raid by 60 B-52 Stratofortress bombers, based at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam. The target was Base Area 353, the supposed location of COSVN in the Fishhook. Although the aircrews were briefed that their mission was to take place in South Vietnam, 48 of the bombers were diverted across the Cambodian border and dropped 2,400 tons of bombs. The mission was designated Breakfast, after the morning Pentagon planning session at which it was devised.

Remarks on Presenting the Congressional Gold Medal to President Nelson Mandela of South Africa

Thank you. Mr. Speaker, Senator Thurmond, Senator Daschle, Congressman Gephardt. Representative Houghton, thank you for what you have done to make this day come to pass. We are all in your debt. Congresswoman Waters, Senator Moseley-Braun, Senator D'Amato. Congressman Dellums, thank you. To the Members of Congress here present, in both parties; members of the Cabinet, administration; to Graca Machel and all our friends from South Africa who are here.

To my friend President Mandela, Americans as one today, across all the lines that divide us, pay tribute to your struggle, to your achievement, and to the inspiration you have given us to do better.

Others have said with profound conviction and eloquence what it is that we love and admire. Today we offer a man who has received the Nobel Prize the highest honor within the gift of this country. But if this day is to be more than a day in which we bask in his reflected glory, we should ask ourselves, what gift can we really give Nelson Mandela in return for 10,000 long days in jail? How can we truly redeem the life of Amy Biehl? How can we honor all of those who marched and worked with Nelson Mandela, who are no longer standing by his side?

After the President was released and began his public career, he said, and I quote, "The true test of our devotion to freedom is just beginning." Whenever we are together, he always talks about unfinished business. He thanked me again yesterday for saying something that, to be honest, I didn't even think about consciously. He said that the United States had now said not what can we do for South Africa, but what can we do with South Africa to build a common future. So I ask all of you to think about just two or three things.

The work of our common struggle with people with whom we share a common past and with whom we must build a common future in South Africa and throughout the African Continent has only begun. President Mandela says that he has now gotten old and is leaving the scene. The truth is, he has gotten married, and he feels young, and he is tired of his public responsibilities, and he wants to go forward into a brighter life.

Those of us who share his vision and lift him up in honor today owe it to him to build a permanent partnership between Americans and Africans, for the education of our children, for the solution of our problems, for the resolution of our differences, for the elevation of what is best about us all. That is what we owe to Nelson Mandela, to Amy Biehl and her family, and to all of those who have sacrificed.

We also owe—for those 10,000 long days and the shining example since—the clear understanding that a man who has given up so much of his life can give us that even more important than the sacrifice yesterday is what you are doing with today and what you will do with tomorrow. For that is the thing that always humbles me when I am with Nelson Mandela, the sense of serenity and peace and engagement in the moment. And so I say to all of you, we should not waste our days; we should make more of our days. Mr. Mandela waited a very long time to actually do something for his people, rather than just to be something to keep their hearts and hopes alive. And every day I watch him, that is what he does. So should we.

And finally, in forgiving those who imprisoned him, he reminded us of the most fundamental lesson of all, that in the end apartheid was a defeat of the heart, the mind, the spirit. It was not just a structure outside and jailhouses within which people were kept; it was a division of the mind and soul against itself. We owe it to Nelson Mandela not simply to give him this award but to live by the lesson he taught us and to tear down every last vestige of apartheid in our own hearts, everything that divides us, one from another.

For those of us who have been privileged to know this remarkable man, no medal, no award, no fortune, nothing we could give him could possibly compare to the gift he has given to us and to the world. The only gift that is true recompense is to continue his mission and to live by the power of his profound and wonderful example.

Now, as prescribed by the law, it is my privilege to present the Congressional Gold Medal to President Nelson Mandela.

WASHINGTON - Despite receiving the United States' highest honor at the Capitol today, retiring South African President Nelson Mandela has been playing his Washington visit less like his own farewell and more like a pep rally for President Clinton.

"Our morality does not allow us to desert our friends," Mandela told the president at an East Room reception with black religious leaders last night.

Without direct reference to the Monica Lewinsky controversy, Mandela went on, "It is not our business to interfere in this matter, but we do wish to say that President Clinton is a friend of South Africa and Africa and, I believe, the friend of the great mass of black people and minorities and the disabled of the United States."

After spending the night at the White House with his wife, Graca Machel, in what first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton called "sort of a slumber party," Mandela was honored today with the Congressional Gold Medal in a ceremony at the Capitol.

Simply put, it works like this:

Two, Clinton is unlikely to step down on his own unless leaders of his own party tell him it is time, as leading Republicans told Richard Nixon, just before he became the only president so far to resign.

And, three, Democratic leaders aren't eager to do either one or two, if it offends black voters, the most party's most loyal demographic group.

A survey conducted for the Democratic National Committee last month by black pollster Ron Lester found that the percentage of black voters who identify themselves as Democrats had climbed to 82 percent from 74 percent four years earlier.

Also, 84 percent said they would vote for Democrats and 13 percent for Republicans in November.

Lately, black voters have been extending that loyalty to the president. For example, a CBS News/New York Times poll taken after the Starr report came out showed white support for Clinton's job performance at 58 percent, compared to 86 percent for blacks. Only 22 percent of whites compared to 63 percent of blacks approved of Clinton's moral values and 55 percent of blacks, compared to 32 percent of whites blamed current scandal on Clinton's "political enemies."

Now, after years of being ignored by Republicans and taken for granted by Democrats, black voters stand to make the crucial difference in more than two dozen competitive House races in the Nov. 3 elections, if they turn out and vote.

That's a big "if." Democratic leaders, burdened by a scandalized president, fear another disaster at the polls this November. Democratic voters are dispirited by the Monica Lewinsky affair and Republicans are energized, quite the opposite of the way Republicans were dispirited and Democrats energized in 1974 by the Watergate affair.

Which raises two questions: Will black support be enough to save the Clinton presidency?

And what can he learn from his success with African-Americans to win more support from other Americans?

Clinton long has enjoyed high black support, higher in some surveys than black leaders enjoy. A study by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, a Washington-based think tank, found Clinton was more popular among blacks than the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson or retired Gen. Colin L. Powell.

I see three big reasons for Clinton's high black support: Loyalty, suspicions and vulnerability.

Loyalty. Blacks reflexively circle their wagons around a friend under fire. Most black voters consider Clinton to be a friend. Polls and focus groups show African-Americans tend to see the GOP-dominated Congress as hostile to the interests of blacks and many are suspicious of the investigations of Clinton. Clinton wins praise for his black appointments and support for Haiti and affirmative action. Seemingly forgotten are Clinton's support for controversial crime and welfare-reform legislation. As one friend put, it, "black people don't desert a friend in need."

A Latino storekeeper on New York's lower East Side shook his head in disgust as he watched the president testify to the grand jury. His anger was not at Bill Clinton but at Ken Starr and his team of prosecutors. "It's just like when they get those kids down to the police station, and they ask them the same thing over and over, anything to try and trap them." One poll taken after the broadcast of the president's testimony showed that the approval for Clinton's job performance actually jumped from 59% to 68%, a register of the disgust felt by ordinary Americans--in sharp contrast to the opinion-forming elites--at what Clinton has been forced to go through.

Ordinary people don't like the intrusions into Clinton's personal life. They think his misbehavior in this area is irrelevant to the performance of his job. And increasingly, I suspect, Americans are registering a larger disgust at prosecutorial techniques.

There's a useful parallel to be made here with the last great judicial spectacle, the O.J. Simpson trial. Many whites raged at widespread black support for Simpson and tried to establish a false solidarity with the poor by denouncing "rich man's justice." It didn't wash with blacks, the vast majority of whom had family members, friends or acquaintances mashed in the wheels of the justice system, and who rooted for O.J. because, with his resources, he at least might beat the system that had blighted so many lives.

Ditto with Clinton, with whom blacks in particular overwhelmingly sympathize in his present troubles. Here's the president, the leader of the Free World, and, just as that Latino store owner said, he's being put through the same old wringer. So they're cheering for him, just as blacks cheered for O.J.

This same wringer is bleakly displayed in the grand jury session. The unwarranted release of the videotape, prompted by vehement Republicans (maybe suckered by a White House pretending to dread its broadcast), was an important event. For many years now defense lawyers have fought for release of grand jury testimony, arguing that only raw transcripts would show how prosecutors mischaracterize testimony and draw up indictments on the basis of perversions of statements made behind closed doors.

Clinton's and Monica Lewinsky's testimony entirely ratifies such attacks on grand juries as presently used by prosecutors. Lewinsky, for example, emerged from Starr's report to Congress as scheming and manipulative. On Starr's account, one could almost build a case against her as a shakedown artist. From the actual grand jury transcript, however, a different and far more sympathetic picture of Lewinsky emerges, one that prompted many of the jurors to muster heartfelt expressions of sympathy and support.

WASHINGTON— Governor Bill Clinton of Arkansas, the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination, said Sunday that he briefly experimented with marijuana while a student in England more than 20 years ago.

In a television interview, Mr. Clinton, 45, was asked if he ever violated international law. "When I was in England," he said, "I experimented with marijuana a time or two, and didn't like it. I didn't inhale and I didn't try it again."

Possession of marijuana is illegal in Britain; Mr. Clinton was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford from 1968 to 1970.

There is doubt whether the admission will further damage Mr. Clinton, whose campaign has been hobbled by questions of character.

Plot Summary


Jerry and Cass have always been competitive. Now that Cass is a well respected Naval aviator like his father, Jerry leaves the submarine service to become a flying cadet with Class 61 at Pensacola. During training, Jerry meets and falls for Cass's fiancée Irene. After air sickness, jitters and a crash landing, Jerry gets his wings. Cass is not as lucky as he is crippled in a crash and must retire. Cass designs a new fighter for the Navy as Jerry pilots flying boats in San Diego. Jerry will do anything to show Cass that he is a better pilot, even if it means leaving the Navy to test the experimental fighter that killed test pilot Steve Conners.

Franklin D. Roosevelt Day by Day


On June 19, 1940 President Roosevelt, before the 1940 election, appointed Frank Knox as Secretary of the Navy and Henry L Stimson as Secretary of War. Both were well known Republicans and FDR now had a coalition government as the signs of war continued.

William Franklin Knox (1870-1944) served as US Secretary of the Navy under President Roosevelt during WW II. A newspaper owner and Rough Rider veteran, he had run as the Republican Vice Presidential candidate in 1936. In 1939, FDR named Knox to the head the Navy Department in an effort to create a bipartisan Cabinet as war loomed. Knox, who had no prior Navy experience, proved to be adept at managing the Department and played a pivotal role in the US mobilization for World War II.

An outspoken proponent of defense readiness, Knox worked with the British Ambassador to craft the destroyers-for-bases deal and publicly advocated the use of warships to escort Lend-Lease deliveries. After the Japanese attacks of December 7, 1941, Knox insisted on a full investigation. As the war progressed, FDR preferred to deal directly with naval commanders, and Knox was rarely involved in the crafting of sensitive operational strategy. Knox died in 1944, still in office, and is interred at Arlington National Cemetery.

William Franklin "Frank" Knox (January 1, 1874 – April 28, 1944) was an American newspaper editor and publisher. He was also the Republican vice presidential candidate in 1936, and Secretary of the Navy under Franklin D. Roosevelt during most of World War II.

Life and career

William Franklin Knox was born in Boston, Massachusetts. His parents were both Canadian: his father was from New Brunswick and his mother Sarah Barnard, was from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. When he was nine, his family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where his father ran a grocery store. He attended Alma College in Michigan, where he was a member of the Zeta Sigma Fraternity.

During the Spanish-American War, he joined the Army, and served in Cuba with Theodore Roosevelt's famous Rough Riders, the 1st US Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. He was a member of Troop D commanded by Captain Robert Huston. As a member of D Troop, Knox fought in Cuba at the Battle of Las Guasimas, and the Battle of San Juan Hill.

Daniel Le Roy du Vivier was born in Amersfoort (Holland) on January 13 1915.

After obtaining a degree in Commercial Sciences at the Catholic University of Leuven.µ, Le Roy du Vivier entered active service as private in the 1st regiment des Guides on July 31 1935. When his military service came to an end he re-enlisted as a student-pilot on April 1st 1937.

With his training finished, he was granted his pilot license on March 15 1938 and was sent to the 1st regiment d’Aeronautique 11th group 4th squadron on September 14 1938.

Promoted Pilot-Sergeant on September 26 1938 he studied at the Military Arms school in Evere where he became a second lieutenant.

On May 10 1940, during the German attack , he was stationed in Nivelles with the rank of Adjudant. Volunteering for a high risk mission he patrolled with a Fairey Firefly single-seat in the area of Antwerp-Leuven-Brussels accompanied by Major Jacques Lamarche and Lieutenant Yves du Monceau de Bergendal.

He was shot down above Keerbergen by 'friendly fire'.

Because of the German push forward he was forced to go to France with his unit on May 15 1940. After a period of inactivity the pilots received the order to surrender on June 19 1940. Rather than surrender, Le Roy du Vivier and several other pilots (de Henricourt de Grune, Van den Hove d'Ertsenryck, Wilmet, Willy Van Lierde, Vichy Ortmans, Georges Doutrepont, Francis de Spiriet, Roger Malengreau) decided escape.

Tim Vigors, who has died aged 82, served as a fighter pilot in the Battle of Britain and in the Far East


After leaving Eton, Tim enrolled in January 1939 as a cadet at RAF Cranwell - his godmother, an air enthusiast, had taken him flying, and he had immediately caught the bug. In February 1940 he joined 222 Squadron at Duxford, flying Spitfires.


One of Vigors's engaging characteristics was his frankness about what it meant to be a raw young pilot during the Battle of Britain.

On the night of June 19 1940 Vigors returned from a night out somewhat the worse for wear for drink, and retired to bed at his base at Kirton in Lindsey, Lincolnshire. When a Tannoy message called for a volunteer to intercept German aircraft which had crossed the coast, Vigors took to the air wearing his scarlet pyjamas under a green silk dressing-gown. He shot down another Heinkel.

Soviets encircle Germans at Stalingrad

On this day in 1942, a Soviet counteroffensive against the German armies pays off as the Red Army traps about a quarter-million German soldiers south of Kalach, on the Don River, within Stalingrad. As the Soviets' circle tightened, German General Friedrich Paulus requested permission from Berlin to withdraw.

The Battle of Stalingrad began in the summer of 1942, as German forces assaulted the city, a major industrial center and a prize strategic coup, if it could be occupied. But despite repeated attempts, the German 6th Army, under Paulus, and part of the 4th Panzer Army, under Ewald von Kleist, could not break past the adamantine defense by the Soviet 62nd Army, commanded by Gen. Vasily I. Chuikov, despite having pushed the Soviets almost to the Volga River in mid-October and encircling Stalingrad.

Diminishing resources, partisan guerilla attacks, and the cruelty of the Russian winter began to take their toll on the Germans. On November 19, the Soviets made their move, launching a counteroffensive that began with a massive artillery bombardment of the German position. The Soviets then assaulted the weakest link in the German force-inexperienced Romanian troops; 65,000 were ultimately taken prisoner by the Soviets.

The Soviets then made a bold strategic move, encircling the enemy, launching pincer movements from north and south simultaneously, even as the Germans encircled Stalingrad. The Germans should have withdrawn, but Hitler wouldn't allow it. He wanted his armies to hold out until they could be reinforced. By the time those fresh troops arrived in December, it was too late. While en route to the location, the "date" told her that he was a helicopter pilot with the National Guard. The 11th-floor New York Avenue law offices with a strategic view of Washington's majestic landmarks are a fair distance from the one-stoplight town of Lonoke, Ark. But these days there is little about Lonoke's most famous native daughter that is not known in the polished suites of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom.

Piece by piece, President Clinton's top-dollar legal team has taken apart the life of Paula Jones, examining topics from her job history to her possible sex partners. They turned up a check she bounced when reimbursing the Arkansas government for personal calls made on state phones. They found previous employers who fired her for tardiness or other reasons. They scoured personnel records and discovered she typed only 24 words per minute and scored 121 out of 174 on an Arkansas state clerical examination.

Venturing into more salacious territory, they interviewed as many as a half-dozen men who claimed to have had sex with her, including some who said they met her casually at parties or bars and then engaged in quick encounters, according to people close to the case. One former boss signed an affidavit alleging that she pursued him at work and that they slept together. After their short-lived relationship ended, he fired her -- in part, he said, because she dressed too provocatively.

Now that the lawyers essentially have finished gathering evidence and made the final pretrial effort to get Jones's sexual harassment lawsuit thrown out, a picture has emerged of who the president's defense team is and where it is headed. Led by veterans of past high-profile political cases, the Clinton legal squad is following an aggressive and political risky strategy centered on Jones herself. After all the attention focused on a president linked by fact or rumor to a host of women -- most recently and most perilously Monica S. Lewinsky -- Clinton's lawyers hope to turn the spotlight with blinding intensity on the life of his most persistent accuser.

"Does her story make sense? It's always been our position to point out why it doesn't make sense," said Mitchell S. Ettinger, a Clinton attorney. "No one's going to argue they weren't in a room together. And you don't have to call her a complete liar. But everything she's said -- about her injuries to her job, her reactions to this, her reasons for filing suit -- it's not going to add up."
