The Stand - The Complete & Uncut Edition
Chapter 17
Starkey was standing in front of monitor 2, keeping a close eye on Tech 2nd Class Frank D. Bruce. When we last saw Bruce, he was facedown in a bowl of Chunky Sirloin Soup. No change except for the positive ID. Situation normal, all fucked up.
Thoughtfully, hands locked behind his back like a general reviewing troops, like General Black Jack Pershing, his boyhood idol, Starkey moved down to monitor 4, where the situation had changed for the better. Dr. Emmanual Ezwick still lay dead on the floor, but the centrifuge had stopped. At 1940 hours last night, the centrifuge had begun to emit fine tendrils of smoke. At 1995 hours the sound pickups in Ezwick’s lab had transmitted a whunga-whunga-whunga sort of sound that deepened into a fuller, richer, and more satisfying ronk! ronk! ronk! At 2107 hours the centrifuge had ronked its last ronk and had slowly come to rest. Was it Newton who had said that somewhere, beyond the farthest star, there may be a body perfectly at rest? Newton had been right about everything but the distance, Starkey thought. You didn’t have to go far at all. Project Blue was perfectly at rest. Starkey was very glad. The centrifuge had been the last illusion of life, and the problem he’d had Steffens run through the main computer bank (Steffens had looked at him as though he were crazy, and yes, Starkey thought he might be) was: How long could that centrifuge be expected to run? The answer, which had come back in 6.6 seconds, was: ± 3 YEARS PROBABLE MALFUNCTION NEXT TWO WEEKS .009% AREAS OF PROBABLE MALFUNCTION BEARINGS 38% MAIN MOTOR 16% ALL OTHER 54%. That was a smart computer. Starkey had gotten Steffens to query it again after the actual burnout of Ezwick’s centrifuge. The computer communed with the Engineering Systems data bank and confirmed that the centrifuge had indeed burned out its bearings.
Remember that, Starkey thought as his caller began to beep urgently behind him. The sound of burning bearings in the final stages of collapse is ronk-ronk-ronk.
He went to the caller and pushed the button that snapped off the beeper. “Yes, Len.”
“Billy, I’ve got an urgent from one of our teams in a town called Sipe Springs, Texas. Almost four hundred miles from Arnette. They say they have to talk to you; it’s a command decision.”
“What is it, Len?” he asked calmly. He had taken over sixteen “downers” in the last ten hours, and was, generally speaking, feeling fine. Not a sign of a ronk.

494 - Statement on the Launch of the Space Shuttle Atlantis
July 8, 2011
Today Americans across the country watched with pride as four of our fellow citizens blasted off from the Kennedy Space Center in the Space Shuttle Atlantis and America reached for the heavens once more.
Behind Atlantis and her crew of brave astronauts stand thousands of dedicated workers who have poured their hearts and souls into America's space shuttle program over the past three decades. To them and all of NASA's incredible workforce, I want to express my sincere gratitude. You helped our country lead the space age, and you continue to inspire us each day.
Today's launch may mark the final flight of the space shuttle, but it propels us into the next era of our never-ending adventure to push the very frontiers of exploration and discovery in space. We'll drive new advances in science and technology. We'll enhance knowledge, education, innovation, and economic growth. And I have tasked the men and women of NASA with an ambitious new mission: to break new boundaries in space exploration, ultimately sending Americans to Mars. I know they are up to the challenge, and I plan to be around to see it.
Congratulations to Atlantis, her astronauts, and the people of America's space program on a picture-perfect launch, and good luck on the rest of your mission to the International Space Station and for a safe return home. I know the American people share my pride at what we have accomplished as a nation and my excitement about the next chapter of our preeminence in space.
NOTE: The statement referred to Christopher J. Ferguson, commander, Douglas G. Hurley, pilot, and Sandra H. Magnus and Rex J. Walheim, mission specialists, Space Shuttle Atlantis.

State law changed to rename King County
With a stroke of a pen, King County officially became Martin Luther King Junior County today, as Governor Christine Gregoire signed Senate Bill 5332 into law at the King County Courthouse. About 100 citizens, community leaders and local and state elected leaders attended the bill signing that came 19 years after the King County Council voted to rename the county

Quotes
Alex Gardner: You had Tommy Ray kill that woman in the dream link, didn't you?
Bob Blair: Yes.
Alex Gardner: Why?
Bob Blair: I wanted to see if it could be done.
Alex Gardner: You're a real humanitarian, Blair.
Bob Blair: I'm a realist. We live in a dangerous, hostile world. I will do whatever I have to to keep this country safe.
Alex Gardner: Yeah, that's what scares me.
Bob Blair: You're a very intelligent young man, Alex. You've mastered an amazing technique. Surely you can see the possibilities. During his dream link with Matusik, Tommy Ray stabbed her with a knife. A dream knife. The shock to Matusik's system caused a coronary and she died. So, the old wives tale comes true after all. When you dream that you die, you die in life at the very same instant. Now we can go into an enemy's dream, kill him, make it look as if he died in his sleep. Do you realize what that means?
Alex Gardner: It means no one's safe from you.
Bob Blair: The question is whether you're gonna cooperate. I never had any doubts about Tommy Ray.
Alex Gardner: Well, why should you? He killed his own father. He's a fucking psychopath.
Bob Blair: Alex, it's very simple. Either you work for me or you die.

Shuttle program's final 4 astronauts riding high
By MARCIA DUNN
AP Aerospace Writer
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Four astronauts are taking space shuttle Atlantis for one last spin - the very last one of the 30-year space shuttle era.
It's the smallest crew since the early shuttle flights - usually there are six or seven. The size was necessitated by the need to use Russian Soyuz capsules in case commander Christopher Ferguson and his crew get stranded aboard the International Space Station.
With the other two shuttles already retired, there isn't another one left to rescue the Atlantis astronauts if their ship were severely damaged in flight.
Joining Ferguson on the 12-day flight are co-pilot Douglas Hurley, Rex Walheim and Sandra Magnus, experienced space fliers all.
"We all want to be able to remember this," Ferguson said. "We want to be able to pass to our children and our children's children that we were fortunate enough to be a part of the space shuttle."

Space shuttle astronauts will check for damage
Atlantis astronauts will spend most of their first full day in orbit checking the space shuttle's delicate heat shield for any damage from Friday's launch.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Atlantis astronauts will spend most of their first full day in orbit checking the space shuttle's delicate heat shield for any damage from Friday's launch.
Astronauts will use the shuttle's robot arm and an extension to slowly examine the most vulnerable parts of the shuttle's outer edges. In 2003, the space shuttle Columbia was destroyed when it returned to Earth because of damage during liftoff.

Astronauts fix second failed computer on shuttle
The pilots on NASA's last space shuttle flight fixed another one of their main computers Friday after it failed and set off an alarm that shattered their sleep.
By MARCIA DUNN
AP Aerospace Writer
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — The pilots on NASA's last space shuttle flight fixed another one of their main computers Friday after it failed and set off an alarm that shattered their sleep.
NASA declared all five of Atlantis' primary computers to be working, pending evaluation of the latest shutdown.
Computer failures like this are extremely rare in orbit, said lead flight director Kwatsi Alibaruho. The two problems appear to be quite different, he noted. The first was caused by a bad switch throw; the second possibly by cosmic radiation.
"The fact that we did have two computer failures on a same flight on a spacecraft that's otherwise performing beautifully, that's not at all lost on me," Alibaruho told reporters.
"I do have a saying that you're not paranoid if they really are after you, so I am cautiously optimistic that we'll have a healthy data-processing system" for Atlantis' undocking and return to Earth next week, he added. "But we will be watching closely."
Atlantis' commander, Christopher Ferguson, said the alarm sounded an hour or so after the four astronauts had gone to bed, during the deepest part of their sleep.
"We all woke up and looked at one another, and we were wondering really what was going on," he said in an interview with The Associated Press on Friday morning. The astronauts rushed to the flight deck and switched to a backup computer. Within a half-hour they were back in bed.
The first computer failure occurred just before Sunday's docking by Atlantis to the International Space Station. New software loads took care of both problems, at least for now.
The five computers are critical for a space shuttle's return to Earth - so crucial that multiple shutdowns, in certain circumstances, could prompt an early return home. Atlantis is due to make the last landing of the 30-year space shuttle era next Thursday.
President Barack Obama made note of the historic journey Friday in a call from the Oval Office to space.

Astronauts turn into 'moving men' at space station
The 10 astronauts on the orbiting shuttle-station complex can turn all their attention to hauling things back and forth now that their single spacewalk is over.
By MARCIA DUNN
AP Aerospace Writer
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — The 10 astronauts on the orbiting shuttle-station complex can turn all their attention to hauling things back and forth now that their single spacewalk is over.
The last spacewalk of NASA's 30-year shuttle era ended successfully Tuesday. It cleared the way for Wednesday's focus on space station stockpiling.
Atlantis delivered a year's worth of food, clothes and other supplies to the International Space Station. Both crews are unloading the cargo carrier that flew up on the shuttle. They will fill it back up with space station trash and discarded equipment for return to Earth next week.
The 13-day mission is the last ever for a space shuttle. After that, all three shuttles will become museum displays.
