CHERRY POINT, N.C. — Flying 20,000 feet over Baghdad last year, Marine Corps pilot Lt. Col. Russell A.C. Sanborn spotted the landmark he had been imagining for more than 12 years.
Using coordinates he had jotted on a scrap of paper and stored in a flight suit pocket, Sanborn guided his AV-8B Harrier attack jet over the Rashid prison in the heart of the smoldering city. With the help of a high-powered targeting scope, he was able to identify the contours of the compound on a screen in his cockpit.
"There is home, sweet home," he radioed to his wingman.
In the 1991 Persian Gulf War, as a newly promoted captain, Sanborn had been shot down in his single-seat plane over the Iraqi-occupied Kuwaiti desert. With the uncontrollable jet hurtling inverted toward the sand, he ejected safely but was quickly captured by Iraqi troops. For 26 days, he was held in a small, dank and unsanitary cell and tortured viciously by his captors.
After his liberation, his body withered from dysentery, his eardrums burst from the beatings, Sanborn could have retired to nurse his wounds and accept the gratitude of his country.
Instead, he returned to flying the Harrier -- statistically the military's most dangerous plane -- six weeks after he walked out of Rashid. He hasn't stopped since.
When U.S. troops were sent to Iraq last year, Sanborn went without hesitation. He had risen to become the second in command of his squadron, managing 16 planes and 250 Marines. His squadron is scheduled to return to Iraq early next year for a one-year rotation, with Sanborn as commanding officer. "Looks like I'll get a third try to get it right," he said.
Before Sanborn left for Iraq last year, his 10-year-old son, Jacob, one of five towheaded children he fathered between wars, offered parting advice: "Dad," he said, "this time, fly higher, fly faster."
Sanborn did just that and completed 19 missions without incident, primarily bombing Iraqi tanks and artillery positions. He did not fulfill his quiet wish to destroy the prison where he had been beaten and starved. But just streaking over the site, free from any Iraqi threat, provided a certain satisfaction.
"I was in charge again, flying at will over the country that imprisoned me and thumped me for 26 days," Sanborn, 41, said in an interview at the Marine Corps Air Station here, his first since the end of the air war. "Now I was the master of their skies, free to come and go as I pleased and return to my ship when I wanted. After that flight, I felt like I had some closure on the whole event."
That is an interesting observation for Sanborn, because he and those who know him say his imprisonment left remarkably few psychological scars -- a single nightmare, an occasional moment of reflection, but little more. It was only one month of his life, he said, ultimately no more traumatic than a few bad weeks at the office.

It was Feb. 9, 1991, on his 17th mission of the Gulf War, that Sanborn became one of 21 Americans taken prisoner during the conflict. Flying at only 10,000 feet as he climbed out of a bombing run, he never saw the heat-seeking missile that locked in on his plane's white-hot exhaust, a feature that made the Harrier unusually vulnerable to enemy fire.
As the missile slammed through a wing, warning lights flashed in Sanborn's cockpit and the plane began to spin. He pulled the ejection handle and shot through the shattering canopy, losing consciousness for a moment under an orange-and-white parachute that carried him safely to the ground.
It was late afternoon, and Sanborn hoped he might escape detection until nightfall. He tried without success to make radio contact, and chambered one of his 15 rounds in a 9-millimeter handgun. Within minutes, he spotted about a dozen Iraqi troops moving his way on foot, fanning out around him in an ever-tightening horseshoe.
"I knew that in about 15 minutes I was going to get captured," Sanborn said. "There was no place to run. I mean, it's wide-open desert. So I was just trying to work the radio, and they just literally walked right up to me." It would be four weeks before the Americans knew whether Sanborn had made it out of his plane alive.
Sanborn's captors, disheveled and jittery after three weeks of allied bombing, walked him to a primitive underground bunker. Soon after, a soldier ripped the nametag off Sanborn's flight suit and confronted him in broken English. "I'm the guy that shot you down," the man said, according to Sanborn. "I've got two of you now."
The beatings began that night. Blindfolded, with his hands tied and a blanket draped over his head, Sanborn was run through a gantlet of chanting, screeching Iraqis who kicked him and beat him with rifle butts, he said. They shoved him into a room and propped him on a bench.
"All of a sudden, they opened up the door and there was this crazy man, and I mean he wanted in bad after me," Sanborn said. "They were keeping him back. And finally one of the guys says, 'You killed this man's brother, so we're going to let him kill you.' And they just let him loose. He threw me off the bench and just started kicking and wailing."
Barely lucid, Sanborn would be beaten twice more that night. Two days later, he was moved to Rashid, where his cell was illuminated by a single bulb and equipped with a foam pad, a worn blanket and a bucket.
Sanborn said he was denied medical care and was not allowed to bathe or brush his teeth. He was served a thin gruel, and on one occasion a bowl of fatty water flavored with a bone. "I was vomiting and having diarrhea every night, just living in my own filth," he said. His weight dropped from 160 pounds to 145.
At night, speaking in a whisper, Sanborn griped to British prisoners who were living in slightly better conditions in a nearby cell. "You colonists are always complaining about something," one of them responded, "either the taxes or the food." It made him laugh.
Sanborn said his guards slapped him around regularly. But the most severe abuse came during a series of interrogations. "They wanted to know a lot about tactical stuff -- what can your airplane do, where are you based out of?" he said. "I'd say, 'I don't know.' They'd say, 'No, no, you're lying.' And then the big gorilla behind you would just cold-cock you."
In survival courses, Sanborn had been trained to devise strategies for frustrating his questioners. "You want the information to be disjointed, incoherent, useless, rabbit holes," he said. He knew there would be reprisals for unsatisfying answers, but he also learned that if he could absorb three beatings the Iraqis typically would tire of the game and toss him back in his cell.
When the war ended, Sanborn and other prisoners were handed over to the Red Cross and flown to a Navy hospital ship before being transported home aboard Air Force Two, the vice president's plane. "The first thing I asked for on that hospital ship was a teeth cleaning," Sanborn said. "My own breath was knocking me down."
Sanborn's parents discovered he was alive when they spotted his face during a CNN report about the freed prisoners. His wife, Linda, got the word from a Marine Corps assistance officer who showed up at the factory where she worked. As she took the long walk through the plant to meet the officer, she could feel the stares of co-workers who knew she was about to learn whether her husband was dead or alive.

I remember well that day 2/1/2002. I was riding my bicycle from Bellevue, Washington, along the regular route I followed to the office I worked at in the Microsoft building in Issaquah, Washington. I was crossing a small bridge next to the Costco building in Issaquah and within sight of the Microsoft building when my bicycle literally flipped end-over-end and I went face first into the concrete sidewalk. I was left sprawled out on my back on the sidewalk among the wooded area of that bridge and dazed for a few minutes. I got up after a few minutes and rode my bicycle the remaining mile or so to the office and noticed a short time later that I had a black eye forming from where my left eye brow seemed to have hit the concrete just before my helmet absorbed the rest of the impact which was painful in itself to my head. I would later think that someone had caused that accident to happen and that it was something similar to that scene in the 1963 film "The Great Escape" where Steve McQueen stretches the thin wire across the road to knock the German soldier off his motorcycle.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Microsoft founder Bill Gates, the world's richest man, has created the country's wealthiest foundation, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy.
Gates and his wife, Melinda, have consolidated their two charitable foundations and donated an additional $6 billion to the newly named Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, bringing its total worth to $17.1 billion, according to a report published on the Chronicle's Web site Sunday and confirmed by a co-chair of the Gates Foundation.The couple decided to merge the William H. Gates Foundation, named after Gates' father, and the Gates Learning Foundation so they could broaden their focus on learning and global health, said Patty Stonesifer, foundation co-chairwoman.
The move catapults the Seattle-based foundation to the top of the Chronicle's list of wealthiest charitble foundations, the newspaper said.

THE COMBINED Gates foundation will have assets of $17.1 billion, making it the second-largest charitable trust in the world. Just to meet federal rules, it will have to give away $500 million by the end of the year.
Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda French Gates, are merging their two charitable foundations and committing an additional $6 billion to create the country's largest philanthropic foundation.
The new entity, called the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, will boast a $17.1 billion endowment and target improving health and education around the world. The venture combines the William H. Gates Foundation, created in 1994, with the Gates Learning Foundation, which was created in 1997 under a different name. The merger is expected to be completed by Jan. 1.

My guess is that I was sent into Microsoft because I was going to be judging their criminal activities. All I was supposed to do was sit there and watch them. The thought occurred to me yesterday that before my memory was erased, I was appointed some kind of role as a federal judge in the U.S. government. Essentially, Microsoft-Corbis is gambling that, with the help of their accomplices such as George W. Bush, if they can obstruct as long as possible this investigation into their criminal activities, there is a greater chance they and their accomplices such as George W. Bush won't be prosecuted for their capital crimes.
A good example is that set up out there near Redmond on the trail when that guy shoulder'd me, trying to cause me to wreck or to punch him in the face after I got up from the wreck he caused. Microsoft-Corbis wouldn't show that part of the video at their trial; they would only show the part of me punching the guy.
I still remember that day because something really triggered my awareness just before the incident. There was something about the way those two people were going to bracket me as I rode past them and something about how I passed a jogger shortly before them that was approaching them and would be facing us as I passed through the two people bracketing me. Later I consciously understood it was no coincidence because I impacted with that guy too hard. I was amazed afterwards that I didn't crash. I was knocked upright on my bicycle seat, my right hand was knocked off the handlebar, and my foot was knocked out of the pedal my shot was clipped to. And a large bruise formed on my right arm a couple days later. But that was the kicker to it all. He was just too tense when we impacted and that was because he leaned into me. I am certain video of that incident will turn up at some point.
After I veered off to the other side of the trail and dropped my bike into the dirt before I fell over, I felt fortunate that no other bicyclist had been passing my left at that moment. I was routinely passed by other cyclists on that stretch of the trail. I was pretty mad when I stopped and got even more agitated because I turned around and the guy was approaching me.
I found myself feeling less threatened after a few moments though and I told him I was "tired of your shit" and turned my back on him to get back on my bike. I think the deciding factor was something as simple as realizing he was shorter than I was. Something about that combined with where he stopped in front of me and wasn't making any threatening body movements, I lost the urge to pound him into the pavement. In hindsight, that's probably what they were trying to get me to do so they could record that on video. I thought about stopping into the Redmond police to report the incident but I did not. Little good it would have done as I am quite certain they are all on the Microsoft-Corbis payroll. I found myself wondering a while back about why the Redmond Police Chief was fired around the time I moved into that apartment in Redmond in 2003. I wonder if she was fired because she was opposed to Dave Reichert and his Microsoft-Corbis-Al Qaeda-sponsored death squad.

I wrote most of the information back several days ago or more than a week ago. Back when I made my observations about that lawyer in Portland Oregon who lived in the same area I used to travel on Microsoft business to back in the year 1999. I just thought you should be aware of the factors that have been driving me crazy for so long so that if you encounter such incidents then you will be better informed than I was.
I would have sworn I had mentioned before in my public blog about another time Microsoft al Qaida attacked me in a prearranged ambush here in Washington State. I can't find a reference to it though. The ambush was that a woman standing near the paved trail I routinely rode my bicycle on after I moved to Spokane Valley in 2004 tried deliberately to cause me to crash my bicycle. She positioned her dog on the opposite side of the trail from her and when I came riding by she deliberately called the dog to her and the dog, obviously trained for that incident, didn't even look at me and was looking at her the whole time. I had no time to react and the dog ran right into me and hit my front tire. I didn't crash even though it was a big dog. I did stop safely and I got off my bicycle to look at my front tire. I heard her comment to someone else she didn't care about my bicycle. I got back on and continued my training ride which was about fifty miles or more, maybe 70 miles. On the way back through that section of the trail she was still standing there in that same area as I rode back to where I always parked my Jeep Wrangler and I yelled at her as I passed by her that she needed to put that dog on a leash. A short while later I read in a the local newspapers I tracked online specific details about the leash law.
Not unlike the woman in the 8 December 2003 "Battlestar Galactica" with the hair and facial similarities I remember to Tracie Crooks, whose infant child in killed in the baby carriage by "Number Six," I was riding along that paved trail outside Redmond where I had been attacked before and I suspected a group of women were also there deliberately in some kind of felony activity directed at me personally. There was four of them pushing baby carriages and they had the trail blocked completely so I couldn't pass. I yelled at them and they cleared the path slowly and I rode by one of them said to me to slow down because I would "live longer." That was just a few days after I had quit working at Microsoft. My last day was 06 Febraury 2004 and my lease did not expire until the end of the month so I was still there waiting so I could move out to Spokane Valley. I was hoping I wouldn't have to. I was hoping I was make some kind of positive impact on those people.
Microsoft al Qaida Bill Gates wants me to know they can kill me at any time. They just know they have to make it look like an accident. They have to make it look random.

It's not long however before Helo spots #6, in a white leather raincoat. He points his gun at her but as she remains still, he turns to run away... but is confronted by a Cylon who takes him captive.

Plot Summary
It's 1885 in Arizona and an Army Captain has dispersed his troops to keep the whites off of Government land thereby keeping the peace with the Apaches. But there are those in Tucson that want the miners back looking for gold and they put pressure on officials in Washington. Soon a new commander arrives, the troops are recalled, and the miners go after gold. Whites then kill a miner with an arrow so they can attack the Indians hoping the troops wipe them out when they retaliate.

Brig. Gen. Benjamin O. Davis, Jr., Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe, Wiesbaden, Germany, was nominated for a temporary promotion to Major General, making him the first African-American to be so nominated. His promotion to two-star rank became effective on June 30 and lasted until May 16, 1960, making him the highest ranking Negro officer in the United States military. A permanent promotion followed in 1962, and Davis attained lieutenant general rank in 1965, retiring in 1998 as the first African-American 4-star general.

"Four years," Popov confirmed. They were in London, at a pub three blocks from the Russian Embassy. He'd taken the train here just on the off chance that one of his former colleagues might show up, and so one had, I van Petrovich Kirilenko. Ivan Petrovich had been a rising star, a few years younger than Popov, a skilled field officer who'd made full colonel at the age of thirty-eight. Now, he was probably

"I am not allowed to say such things, Dmitriy." Kirilenko smiled and nodded even so. He'd come very far and very fast in a downsized agency of the Russian government, and was doubtless still actively pursuing political and other intelligence, or rather, had a goodly staff of people to do it for him. Russia was worried about NATO expansion; the alliance once so threatening to the Soviet Union was now advancing eastward toward his country's borders, and some in Moscow worried, as they were paid to worry, that this could be the precursor to an attack on the Motherland. Kirilenko knew this was rubbish, as did Popov, but even so he was paid to make sure of it. and the new rezident was doing his job as instructed. "So, what are you doing now?"
"I am not permitted to say." Which was the obvious reply. It could mean anything, but in the context of their former organization, it meant that Popov was still a player of some sort. What sort, Kirilenko didn't know, though lied heard that Dmitriy Arkadeyevich had been RIF'd from the organization. That had been a surprise to him.
Popov still enjoyed an excellent service reputation as a field spook. "I am living between worlds now, Vanya. I work for a commercial business, but I perform other duties as well," he allowed. The truth was so often a useful tool, in the service of lies.
"You did not appear here by accident," Kirilenko pointed out.
"True. I hoped to see a colleague here." The pub was too close to the Embassy on Palace Green, Kensington, for serious work, but it was a comfortable place, for casual meets, and besides, Kirilenko believed his status as rezident to be entirely secret. Showing up in a place like this enhanced that. No real spook, everybody knew, would take the chance. "I need some help with something."
"What might that be?" the intelligence officer asked, over a sip of bitter.
"A report on a CIA officer who is probably known to us."
"The name?"
"John Clark."
"Why?"
"He is now, I believe, the leader of a black operation based here in England. I would like to offer the information I have on the man in return for whatever information you might have. I can perhaps add a few things to that dossier.

It took half an hour to check around the Project complex. The Russian was nowhere to be found. That made sense, since his horse had been found loose that morning by Dr. Killgore. Okay, the former FBI agent thought. Popov had killed Hunnicutt and then skipped. But skipped where? He'd probably ridden to the interstate highway and thumbed a ride, or maybe walked to a bus stop or something. It was a mere twenty-five miles to the regional airport, and from there the bastard could be i" Australia by now, Henriksen had to admit to himself. But why would he have done any of that?
"John?" he asked Killgore. "What did Popov know?"
"What do you mean?"
"What did he know about the Project?"
"Not much. Brightling didn't really brief him in, did he?"
"No. Okay, what did Hunnicutt know?"
"Shit, Bill, Foster knew everything."
"Okay, then we think Popov and Hunnicutt went riding last night. Hunnicutt turns up dead, and Popov isn't anywhere to be found. So, could Hunnicutt have told Popov what the Project is doing?"
"I suppose, yes," Killgore confirmed with a nod.
"So, Popov finds out, gets Foster's revolver, shoots him, and bugs the hell out."
"Christ! You think he might-"
"Yes, he might. Shit, man, anybody might. "
"But we'd got the `B' vaccine in him. I gave him the shot myself!"
"Oh, well," Bill Henriksen observed. Oh, shit, his brain went on. Wil Gearing's going to initiate Phase One today! As if he could have forgotten. He had to talk to Brightling right away.
Both Doctors Brightling were in the penthouse accommodations atop the residence building, overlooking the runway, which now had four Gulfstream V business jets on it. The news Henriksen delivered wasn't pleasing to either of them.
"How bad is this?" John asked.
"Potentially it's pretty bad," Bill had to admit.
"How close are we to-"
"Four hours or less," Henriksen replied.
"Does he know that?"
"It's possible, but we can't know for sure."
"Where would he have gone?" Carol Brightling asked.
"Shit, I don't know-CIA, FBI, maybe. Popov's a trained spook. In his position I'd go to the Russian embassy in D.C., and tell the rezident. He'll have credibility there

WASHINGTON - There are three stars on the heavily decorated Air Force uniform of Lt. Gen. Benjamin Davis Jr., commander of the famed Tuskegee Airmen who never lost a single bomber to enemy fire during 200 escort missions they performed during World War II.
Today, Davis was getting a fourth star 28 years after he retired and 100 years after his father - America's first black brigadier general

I know I must have written in my journals somewhere that I watched those miniseries episodes premiere on cable television back in December 2003. I can still recall sitting in my apartment in the spare bedroom I have configured as an office. I had my Mitsubishi television on one wall and I could sit there at my computers and work and have the television in view at the same time. I was working from there when I sent that letter to the Chief of Naval Operations and I feel certain I sent it well before December 2003. I told my manager at Microsoft about it.

McCarthy Army hearings begin
Senator Joseph McCarthy begins hearings investigating the United States Army, which he charges with being "soft" on communism. These televised hearings gave the American public their first view of McCarthy in action, and his recklessness, indignant bluster, and bullying tactics quickly resulted in his fall from prominence.
In February 1950, Senator McCarthy charged that there were over 200 "known communists" in the Department of State. Thus began his dizzying rise to fame as the most famous and feared communist hunter in the United States. McCarthy adeptly manipulated the media, told ever more outrageous stories concerning the communist conspiracy in the United States, and smeared any opponents as "communist sympathizers" to keep his own name in the headlines for years. By 1954, however, his power was beginning to wane. While he had been useful to the Republican Party during the years of the Democratic administration of President Harry S. Truman, his continued attacks on "communists in government" after Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower took over the White House in 1953 were becoming political liabilities.
In an effort to reinvigorate his declining popularity, McCarthy made a dramatic accusation that was a crucial mistake: in early 1954, he charged that the United States Army was "soft" on communism. McCarthy was indignant because David Schine, one of his former investigators, had been drafted and the Army, much to McCarthy's surprise, refused the special treatment he demanded for his former aide. In April 1954, McCarthy, chairman of the Government Operations Committee in the Senate, opened televised hearings into his charges against the Army.
The hearings were a fiasco for McCarthy. He constantly interrupted with irrelevant questions and asides; yelled "point of order" whenever testimony was not to his liking; and verbally attacked witnesses, attorneys for the Army, and his fellow senators. The climax came when McCarthy slandered an associate of the Army's chief counsel, Joseph Welch. Welch fixed McCarthy with a steady glare and declared evenly, "Until this moment, Senator, I think I never really gauged your cruelty or your recklessness...Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last?" A stunned McCarthy listened as the packed audience exploded into cheers and applause. McCarthy's days as a political power were effectively over. A few weeks later, the Army hearings dribbled to a close with little fanfare and no charges were upheld against the Army by the committee. In December 1954, the Senate voted to censure McCarthy for his conduct. Three years later, having become a hopeless alcoholic, he died.

OC Pilot: (O.S.) We had trouble with our F.T.L. drive, took us almost three hours to fix.
Adama: Have ask them how they escaped the Cylons.
Boomer: Olympic Carrier, Boomer. I've been directed to ask you how you escaped from the Cylons.
OC Pilot: (O.S.) You got me. They were closing in on us when the rest of you were jumping. I thought we were goners, and they just broke off. Someone must've been watching out for us.
Boomer: Roger that.
OC Pilot: (O.S.) one other thing, Boomer: I've got a Dr. Amarak onboard. He claims he has an urgent matter to discuss with the President. He's been driving me crazy.
Boomer: Olympic Carrier, can you be more specific?
OC Pilot: (O.S.) I'm afraid I can't. He says he knows something about a traitor in our midst, and he's unwilling to share any more than that.
