Gop Puts Conservative Stamp On Its House Leadership Team

WASHINGTON - House Republicans today put a more combative stamp on their leadership team, narrowly electing a staunchly conservative economist to replace a moderate as their No. 3 party official.

"Compromise is not going to be in the vocabulary" in the session of Congress that begins Jan. 5, complained Rep. Sherwood Boehlert, R-N.Y., a member of the party's shrinking moderate wing.

As both parties convened to elect their leaders for the coming two years, GOP members elected Texas Rep. Richard Armey over incumbent Californian Jerry Lewis to chair the House Republican Conference, an organization of all GOP House members. The vote was 88 to 84.

Incumbents won easily for the rest of the top posts in both parties: House Speaker Thomas Foley, D-Wash.; Majority Leader Dick Gephardt

1 Man Crime Stopper Team

Albuquerque, NM – On August 6, 2013, Detective Jesse Carter of the Albuquerque Police Department’s Special Investigation Unit, made his 36th arrest this year to date from crime stopper tips. Detective Carter is assigned full time to the United States Marshals Service’s South West Investigative Fugitive Team (SWIFT) task force. Detective Carter’s mission on the task force is to follow up on leads and tips generated by the Albuquerque Metro Crime Stopper unit.

Last night, the task force arrested fugitive Meghan Clark on charges of Robbery and Kidnapping. Clark’s boyfriend Tom Deforest was also arrested; he was booked on charges of Domestic Battery. Clark and Deforest mark arrests 35 and 36 for the year that have been the result of Crime Stopper tips. District of New Mexico, United States Marshal, Conrad Candelaria said “Detective Carter----- known by the United States Marshals Service for the District of New Mexico as Special Deputy United States Marshal Carter, is part of what defines “Force Multiplier”, whereby the task force is comprised of many law enforcement agencies, across many jurisdictions within New Mexico, because dangerous and violent fugitives do not recognize jurisdictional boundaries. The “Force Multiplier” is relied upon in order to achieve the important mission of fugitive apprehension, through collaboration, cooperation that is combined with exceptional investigative skill

Believers Finding Apocalyptic Signs Within Scriptures

In continuing our look at apocalyptic views, your religion writer recently, raptly absorbed a TV show on which the host and three panelists talked about the end of human history, presenting what is today's ascendant scenario among Christians who believe the Bible foretells these events.

First comes the Rapture, which heralds the Tribulation, a seven-year period of chaos that ushers in the Millennium, when Jesus Christ defeats Satan and slays the Antichrist (Satan's human agent) in the Battle of Armageddon, where blood will reach the height of a horse's bridle for 200 miles.

Christ then presides for 1,000 years of earthly paradise before slaying Satan and closing the book on the human experiment-after the final judgment, of course, in which Christians get heaven and all others get hell for eternity.

Many conservative Christians believe this process is about to unfold.

When the Rapture arrives to kick things off, true Christians will leave the here-and-now by levitating; that is, they'll rise bodily and, it seems, invisibly into the air to be with Jesus at an unspecified altitude while everybody else is left behind to endure seven years of suffering.

You've seen the bumper sticker: "In Case of Rapture, This Car Will Be Driverless." Imagine what this could do to traffic-the crashes, gridlock, confusion.

Think how rattled, addled and terrified people will be when they discover that co-workers, friends and relatives have vanished.

Think about watching sports on TV and wondering what became of the guy with the ball.

Before that happens, a panelist predicted, networks will break in to deliver shocked, confounded news bulletins about the mysterious disappearances and resulting disorders.

No shortage of TV folks, it would seem. Nor should things grind to a halt in the Chicago area, not to mention New York City and Los Angeles. And government activity in Washington and the state capitals will probably be almost totally unaffected.

The TV host and panel, who read the Bible literally and believe it to be inerrant, seemed supremely confident about their spot on the Rapture roster and almost giddily expectant about the bloodshed to come.

They also seemed sure that true Christians like themselves know who they are and that a vast majority of those who consider themselves Christians really don't pass muster with the Almighty.

Then there's the remainder of the world population; the sky during Rapture doesn't promise to be very crowded.

As noted in an earlier column, those with such apocalyptic beliefs constitute a minority of Christians, although their numbers are sizable.

If you think their ideas are strange, if not offensively exclusionary, why pay attention? One reason is to understand those who may take these ideas to extremes, possibly forcing public concern, as with the Branch Davidians.

Some biblical scholars say similar situations could occur as the millennium winds down and geopolitical problems, to the true believers, seem to follow the scriptural script for the apocalypse.

The biblical basis? The prime source for the apocalyptic game plan is the last book of the New Testament, The Revelation to John, thought to be written about 95 A.D., some 65 years after the crucifixion.

Says Adela Yarbro Collins, professor of New Testament at the University of Chicago Divinity School and author of "The Apocalypse" (Liturgical Press, Collegeville, Minn.): "John was probably an early Christian prophet, not the apostle. He seems to model his writings on the classic books of Jeremiah, Isaiah, Daniel and Ezekiel (from the Hebrew Scriptures). He borrows a lot of images and themes in updating their work."

The Book of Revelation was written for a small Christian community in a society under the rule of the Roman Empire. "They are poor, probably despised by the worldly people who live around them and persecuted by the Roman authorities," says Robert Fuller, professor of religious studies at Bradley University and author of the recently published "Naming the Antichrist: The History of an American Obsession" (Oxford University Press).

The writer of Revelation is recruiting members and shoring up the will of the faithful. "John's telling them that someday they'll be vindicated, someday they'll receive eternal life and their persecutors will be destroyed," Fuller says.

John believed the end was near. Does that mean that his prophecy can be understood and applied to the present?

"It's typical of religious groups to update interpretation of their Scripture," Collins says. "One way is to see it as having nothing to do with history, but as a choice between good and evil. Or you can read it so it coincides with your own time. It was intended as comment on its time, so this is logical. But it's moving away from the author's own meaning."

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. — The space shuttle Atlantis glided to a landing Friday after the first East-West linkup in orbit in 20 years, bringing home an American and two Russians who spent an often dreary 3 1/2 months aboard the Mir space station.

The shuttle, with commander Robert L. (Hoot) Gibson at the controls, touched down at 7:54 a.m. PDT at the Kennedy Space Center, from where it was launched June 27.

"Welcome home, Atlantis . . . congratulations on a perfect end to your historic mission. A new era in human spaceflight has begun," shuttle communicator Curt Brown radioed the crew from Mission Control in Houston.

"We couldn't have said it better. We're proud to have been a part of it," Gibson radioed back from the cockpit.

During the 10-day shuttle mission, Atlantis docked with Mir 245 miles above Earth in a feat of precision flying executed at 17,500 m.p.h. Atlantis delivered a fresh Russian crew to Mir and gave astronaut Norman E. Thagard and his two Russian crew mates a ride back home.

President Clinton called the astronauts and cosmonauts before they left Atlantis to congratulate them on their docking mission with the Russian space station. He offered special praise for Thagard, saying "we're all very proud."

"The Russians took good care of me," Thagard told the President. "We're great friends so I think if what we did on a personal level is any indication, there won't be any problem with this on an intergovernmental level as well."

Clinton replied: "The next time we have any problem between American and Russian officials I'm going to send them into space. I think I now know how to solve all international problems."
