Chapter 43
There was a dead man lying in the middle of Main Street in May, Oklahoma.
Nick wasn’t surprised. He had seen a lot of corpses since leaving Shoyo, and he suspected he hadn’t seen a thousandth of all the dead people he must have passed. In places, the rich smell of death on the air was enough to make you feel like swooning. One more dead man, more or less, wasn’t going to make any difference.
But when the dead man sat up, such an explosion of terror rose in him that he again lost control of his bike. It wavered, then wobbled, then crashed, spilling Nick violently onto the pavement of Oklahoma Route 3. He cut his hands and scraped his forehead.
“Holy gee, mister, but you took a tumble,” the corpse said, coming toward Nick at a pace best described as an amiable stagger. “Didn’t you just? My laws!”
Nick got none of this. He was looking at a spot on the pavement between his hands where drops of blood from his cut forehead were falling, and wondering how badly he had been cut. When the hand touched him on the shoulder he remembered the corpse and scrambled away on the palms of his hands and the soles of his shoes, the eye not covered with the patch bright with terror.
“Don’t you take on so,” the corpse said, and Nick saw he wasn’t a corpse at all but a young man who was looking happily at him. He had most of a bottle of whiskey in one hand, and now Nick understood. Not a corpse but a man who had gotten drunk and had passed out in the middle of the road.
Nick nodded at him and made a circle with his thumb and forefinger. Just then a drop of blood oozed warmly into the eye that Ray Booth had worked over, making it smart. He raised the eyepatch and swiped his forearm across it. He had a little more vision on that side today, but when he closed his good eye, the world still retreated to something which was little more than a colorful blur. He replaced the patch and then walked slowly to the curb and sat beside a Plymouth with Kansas plates which was slowly settling on its tires. He could see the gash on his forehead reflected in the Plymouth’s bumper. It looked ugly but not deep. He would find the local drugstore, disinfect it, and slap a Band-Aid over it. He thought he still must have enough penicillin in his system to fight off almost anything, but his close call from the bullet-scrape on his leg had given him a horror of infection. He picked scraps of gravel out of his palms, wincing.
The man with the bottle of whiskey had been watching all of this with no expression at all. If Nick had looked up, it would have struck him as queer immediately. When he had turned away to examine his wound in the bumper’s reflection, the animation had leaked out of the man’s face. It became empty and clean and unlined. He was wearing bib-alls that were clean but faded and heavy workshoes. He stood about five-nine, and his hair was so blond it was nearly white. His eyes were a bright, empty blue, and with the cornsilk hair, his Swedish or Norwegian descent was unmistakable. He looked no more than twenty-three, but Nick found out later he had to be forty-five or close to it because he could remember the end of the Korean War, and how his daddy had come home in uniform a month later. There was no question that he might have made that up. Invention was not Tom Cullen’s long suit.
He stood there, empty of face, like a robot whose plug has been pulled. Then, little by little, animation seeped back into his face. His whiskey-reddened eyes began to twinkle. He smiled. He had remembered again what this situation called for.
“Holy gee, mister, but you took a tumble. Didn’t you just? My laws!” He blinked at the amount of blood on Nick’s forehead.
Nick had a pad of paper and a Bic in his shirt pocket; neither had been jarred loose by the fall. He wrote: “You just scared me. Thought you were dead until you sat up. I’m okay. Is there a drugstore in town?”
He showed the pad to the man in the bib-alls. The man took it. Looked at what was written there. Handed it back. Smiling, he said, “I’m Tom Cullen. But I can’t read. I only got to third grade but then I was sixteen and my daddy made me quit. He said I was too big.”
Retarded, Nick thought. I can’t talk and he can’t read. For a moment he was utterly nonplussed.
“Holy gee, mister, but you took a tumble!” Tom Cullen exclaimed. In a way, it was the first time for both of them. “My laws, didn’t you just!”
Nick nodded. Replaced the pad and pen. Put a hand over his mouth again and shook his head. Cupped his hands over his ears and shook his head. Placed his left hand against his throat and shook his head.
Cullen grinned, puzzled. “Got a toothache? I had one once. Gee, it hurt. Didn’t it just? My laws!”
Nick shook his head and went through his dumbshow again. Cullen guessed earache this time. Nick threw his hands up and went over to his bike. The paint, was scraped, but it didn’t seem hurt. He got on and pedaled a little way up the street. Yes, it was all right. Cullen jogged alongside, smiling happily. His eyes never left Nick. He hadn’t seen anyone for most of a week.
“Don’t you feel like talkin?” he asked, but Nick didn’t look around or appear to have heard. Tom tugged at his sleeve and repeated his question.
The man on the bike put his hand over his mouth and shook his head. Tom frowned. Now the man had put his bike on its kickstand and was looking at the storefronts. He seemed to see what he wanted, because he went over to the sidewalk and then to Mr. Norton’s drugstore. If he wanted to go in there it was just too bad, because the drug was locked up. Mr. Norton had left town. Just about everybody had locked up and left town, it seemed like, except for Mom and her friend Mrs. Blakely, and they were both dead.
Now the no-talking-man was trying the door. Tom could have told him it was no use even though the OPEN sign was on the door. The OPEN sign was a liar. Too bad, because Tom would dearly have loved an ice cream soda. It was a lot better than the whiskey, which had made him feel good at first and then made him sleepy and then had made his head ache fit to split. He had gone to sleep to get away from the headache but he had had a lot of crazy dreams about a man in a black suit like the one that Revrunt Deiffenbaker always wore. The man in the black suit chased him through the dreams. He seemed like a very bad man to Tom. The only reason he had gone to drinking in the first place was because he wasn’t supposed to, his daddy had told him that, and Mom too, but now everyone was gone, so what? He would if he wanted to.
But what was the no-talking-man doing now? Picked up the litter basket from the sidewalk and he was going to… what? Break Mr. Norton’s window? CRASH! By God and by damn if he didn’t! And now he was reaching through, unlocking the door…
“Hey, mister, you can’t do that!” Tom cried, his voice throbbing with outrage and excitement. “That’s illegal! M-O-O-N and that spells il -legal. Don’t you know—”

"Another Day In Paradise"
She calls out to the man on the street
"Sir, can you help me?
It's cold and I've nowhere to sleep,
Is there somewhere you can tell me?"
He walks on, doesn't look back
He pretends he can't hear her
Starts to whistle as he crosses the street
Seems embarrassed to be there

Quotes
Terence Mann: Ray, people will come Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. Of course, we won't mind if you look around, you'll say. It's only $20 per person. They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it

Homer's next phone call from Moe's is to the President of the United States.
Homer: Hello, is this President Clinton? Good! I figured if anyone knew where to get some Tang, it'd be you. ...Shut up!
Assistant: Excuse me --
Homer: Aah!
Assistant: Are you the person that called NASA yesterday?
Homer: No, it wasn't me, I swear! It was...him! [points to Barney]
Scientist: Sir, how would you like to get higher than you've ever been in your life?
Barney: Be an astronaut? Sure!
Scientist: Well, welcome aboard. I think you'll find this will win you the respect of your family and friends.
Homer: [gasps] Respect? Nooo! It was me. _I_ made the crank call. I do it all the time! Check with the FBI: I have a file. I have a file!

The Simpsons Season 5 Episode 15
Deep Space Homer
Aired Sunday 8:00 PM Feb 24, 1994 on FOX
At the plant, Homer never gets to be employee of the month; they even choose an inanimate carbon rod over him. At NASA the ratings are down, so they begin a campaign to recruit an everyday loser for the next pointless mission. Naturally, Homer and Barney are among the finalists. The family gets to go to Florida while they train. Barney is kicking Homer's butt, but alcoholism ends his quest. Homer gets really nervous about the mission. He will go with two former astronauts, so he can't screw up like he always does, right? Nope! He brings potato chips into space and wreaks havoc on the mission. James Taylor comes up with a plan to save them, but Homer screws up again. An inanimate carbon rod finally saves them for their reentry. Homer once again fails to get any recognition, because a rod takes the spotlight.

Susan Smith: Child Murderer or Victim?
Susan
Susan Leigh Vaughan Smith was born in Union, South Carolina on September 26, 1971.
During Susan's senior year of high school in 1989, she was voted "Friendliest Female" at Union High School. Susan's classmates remembered her as "cheerful and down to earth." Although she was a bit chubby in high school, Susan wore miniskirts and blouses which flattered her figure. Susan was vivacious and outgoing, but this only masked her insecurity and burning need for male attention.
Despite Susan's record of achievement and her image as a model daughter and friend, Susan's life was filled with turmoil. Some of it came from her relationship with her stepfather. Over the years, Bev's attention and approval became increasingly important to Susan and she found herself competing with her mother for his attention.
In 1987, when Susan was about to celebrate her sixteenth birthday, one of Bev's daughters from his previous marriage stayed overnight in the Russell home. The daughter was given Susan's bedroom and Susan was to sleep on the family room sofa. When Susan was ready to go to sleep, Bev was sitting at one end of the sofa. Rather than ask Bev to move, Susan crawled into Bev's lap and began to fall asleep. It was odd for a fifteen-year-old to act like a two-year-old, but Susan may have felt that this behavior was harmless. Bev, on the other hand, seemed to feel that Susan's behavior was provocative. Susan fell asleep, but gradually awoke to the awareness of Bev's hand moving slowly yet firmly from her shoulder to her breasts. Bev then took Susan's hand and placed it directly on his genitals. Susan pretended to be asleep while the molestation took place. Susan later told her mother that she did not object to Bev's behavior because she "wanted to see how far he would go." Susan's response was clearly inappropriate.
Susan filed a compliant against Bev that was investigated by the South Carolina Department of Social Services and the Union County sheriff's office. Linda contacted Susan's guidance counselor and obtained the name of a family counselor. Bev, Linda and Susan only went for family counseling four or five times before discontinuing the sessions. While the matter was being investigated, Bev agreed to move out of the family's home, but returned a short time later.
During Susan's murder trial, it was revealed that the abuse never stopped. According to Seymour Halleck, the defense's psychiatric expert, "the family seemed to blame Susan as much as Bev." The family was concerned that stories about the sexual abuse would spread into the community and they blamed Susan for worsening the situation by making it public and reporting it to the Department of Social Services.
In February 1988, Susan was seventeen and sought out her guidance counselor, Camille Stribling for advice. Susan told Stribling that her stepfather had been molesting her. Stribling was required by law to report the sexual abuse allegations to the South Carolina State Department of Social Services. An official in that department called the Union County sheriff's office.
Records from the Union County sheriff's office indicate that in March 1988, Susan reported an incident of sexual molestation by her stepfather to her high school guidance counselor and to her mother. Linda told officials from the sheriff's office that when she confronted Bev, he had not denied that the incident of abuse had occurred. The Department of Social Services sent a caseworker to interview Susan, Susan's guidance counselor and several of Susan's teachers.
At Susan's trial, the caseworker testified that she had learned that Bev Russell had on repeated occasions, fondled Susan's breasts on top of her clothing, rench-kissed her and had taken Susan's hand and placed it on his genitals.
No charges were brought against Bev Russell regarding this second series of molestation acts and there was no court hearing because Susan, probably under pressure from Linda, agreed not to press any charges against Bev. The Department of Social Services caseworker did not let the matter drop so easily and notified Assistant Circuit Solicitor Jack Flynn. The caseworker tried to convince Flynn to take the matter to court in order to obtain a court order so that charges of "assault and battery of a high and aggravated" nature could be brought against Bev. However, an agreement was reached between Robert Guess, Bev's attorney, and Solicitor Flynn and charges were never filed against Bev. The agreement reached by Guess and Flynn was presented to Judge David Wilburn on March 25, 1988. Judge Wilburn sealed the agreement, which meant that the agreement would never be made available to the public.

Kamikaze (typhoon)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Kamikaze (Japanese for divine wind), were two winds or storms that are said to have saved Japan from two Mongol fleets under Kublai Khan. These fleets attacked Japan in 1274 and again in 1281. Due to growth of Zen Buddhism among Samurai at the time, these were the first events where the typhoons were described as "divine wind" as much by their timing as by their force.

Gates: Smile Would Have Helped, But He Told Truth
By James V. Grimaldi
Seattle Times Washington Bureau
WASHINGTON - Bill Gates said he wished he'd smiled more during his videotaped deposition taken before the Microsoft antitrust trial started, but that he stands by all of his answers' to questions posed by government prosecutors.
Gates, speaking to reporters here via satellite today, doused speculation that Microsoft lawyers would call him a witness. He challenged the government to put him on the stand. So far, neither side has him on the witness list.
Gates attacked David Boies, the U.S. Department of Justice's lead attorney in the case.
"I answered truthfully every single question that was put forth," Gates said. "You have to understand that Mr. Boies made it clear in the negotiations leading up to the case that he is really out to destroy Microsoft. He is really out to make all the good work we've done - and make us look very bad. He's a lawyer asking questions using ambiguous terms."

On Thursday, in an interview on the CBS News program "This Morning," Smith said that she had agreed to let the authorities search her home on Wednesday but that she did not know what they were looking for.
With her husband by her side for the interview, she denied knowing anything about the whereabouts of their two sons.
"I did not have anything to do with the abduction of my children," Smith said in the interview.
"I don't think that any parent could love my children more than I do, and I would never even think about doing anything that would harm them," she added. "It's really painful to have the finger pointed at you when it's your children involved."

Video Audience At Houston Ball Game Hear Suicide Shot
Houston – (AP) – Houston television listeners heard a 50-year-old laundryman commit suicide last night at a Texas League baseball game.
Stanford B. Twente shot himself to death as he sat beside telecaster Dick Gottlieb in a press box at Buffalo Stadium. The shot was heard over television and throughout the stadium.
Seconds later a TV camera focused on Twente's slumped body.
Police had a report a half hour earlier he had told a bar waitress he was going to kill himself and "to watch me at the end of the fifth."
The shooting occurred as pitcher Don Stephens of Houston stepped to the plate to start the last half of the sixth inning against Tulsa.
Justice of the Peace Tom Maes was among those watching the game on television. He returned an inquest verdict of suicide without leaving his home.
"I saw the man on television." Maes told Detective George Chapman.
Twente died in a hospital about two hours after the shooting. Police said a .41 caliber bullet struck him behind his right ear.
Twente appeared at the television booth and told Gottlieb "I got something to tell you."
Gottlieb waved the man away and continued narrating the game. Twente was seated between the announcer and the TV engineer, Lee Bennett. Just as Bennett started to get Twente to leave the box, Twente pulled a pistol, shot himself and fell across the engineer.
The TV camera was focused on the Houston dugout and listeners saw the Houston players suddenly turn and look toward the press box.
The camera then swung toward Gottlieb who told his audience:
"Ladies and gentlemen, a tremendous thing has just happened. A gentleman has just shot himself. I return you now to the studio."
Two minutes later the telecast of the baseball game was resumed.
Police found a note on Twente, dated June 3, addressed "to whom it may concern." The note read:
"I leave all my possessions to my boy, Bailey Twente, Anderson, S. C. My wife has my insurance policy."

Chapter 22
Farther down the hall a man sat with his back propped against a closed door, a sign tied around his neck with a shoelace. His chin had fallen forward, obscuring what was written there. Starkey put his fingers under the man’s chin and pushed his head back. As he did so, the man’s eyeballs fell back into his head with a meaty little thud. The words on the sign had been written in red Magic Marker. NOW YOU KNOW IT WORKS, the sign said. ANY QUESTIONS?
Starkey let go of the man’s chin. The head remained cocked at its stiff angle, the dark eye sockets staring raptly upward. Starkey stepped back. He was crying again. He suspected he was crying because he didn’t have any questions.
The cafeteria doors were propped open. Outside them was a large cork bulletin board. There was to have been a league bowl-off on June 20, Starkey saw. The Grim Gutterballers vs. The First Strikers for the Project championship. Also, Anna Floss wanted a ride to Denver or Boulder on July 9. She would share driving and expenses. Also, Richard Betts wanted to give away some friendly pups, half collie and half St. Bernard. Also, there were weekly nondenominational religious services in the caf.
Starkey read every announcement on the bulletin board, and then he went inside.
The smell in here was worse—rancid food as well as dead bodies. Starkey looked around with dull horror.
Some of them seemed to be looking at him.
“Men—” Starkey said, and then choked. He had no idea what he had been about to say.
He walked slowly over to where Frank D. Bruce lay with his face in his soup. He looked down at Frank D. Bruce for several moments. Then he pulled Frank D. Bruce’s head up by the hair. The soup bowl came with him, still stuck on his face by soup which had long since congealed, and Starkey struck at it in horror, finally knocking it off. The bowl clunked to the floor, upside down. Most of the soup still clung to Frank D. Bruce’s face like moldy jelly. Starkey produced his handkerchief and wiped off as much of it as he could. Frank D. Bruce’s eyes appeared to be gummed shut by soup, but Starkey forbore to wipe the lids. He was afraid Frank D. Bruce’s eyes would fall back into his skull, like the eyes of the man with the sign. He was even more afraid that the lids, freed of the glue which held them, might roll up like windowshades. He was mostly afraid of what the expression in Frank D. Bruce’s eyes might be.
“Private Bruce,” Starkey said softly, “at ease.”
He put the handkerchief carefully over the face of Frank D. Bruce. It stuck there. Starkey turned and walked out of the cafeteria in long, even strides, as if on a parade ground.
Halfway back to the elevator he came to the man with the sign around his neck. Starkey sat down beside him, loosened the strap over the butt of his pistol, and put the barrel of the gun into his mouth.
When, the shot came, it was muffled and undramatic. None of the corpses took the slightest notice. The air purifiers took care of the puff of smoke.

Buzz warns him, "Homer, no!" But it's too late: Homer opens the bag nonetheless. The chips float about the cabin, and Race rues, "They'll clog the instruments!" Buzz is worried: "Careful! They're ruffled." Homer has the solution, however; he unbuckles his seat belt, and accompanied by "The Blue Danube Waltz", he floats about the cabin, eating the chips. But his head drifts perilously close to the ant colony.

Norma Bates: [voiceover in police custody, as Norman is thinking] It's sad, when a mother has to speak the words that condemn her own son. But I couldn't allow them to believe that I would commit murder. They'll put him away now, as I should have years ago. He was always bad, and in the end he intended to tell them I killed those girls and that man... as if I could do anything but just sit and stare, like one of his stuffed birds. They know I can't move a finger, and I won't. I'll just sit here and be quiet, just in case they do... suspect me. They're probably watching me. Well, let them. Let them see what kind of a person I am. I'm not even going to swat that fly. I hope they are watching... they'll see. They'll see and they'll know, and they'll say, "Why, she wouldn't even harm a fly..."

On NW Fourth Street Tim drove west past the Federal Building and then turned north on a one-way street. On Fifth Street he turned right. At the chain link fence in front of the Firestone he pulled over and lit the five-minute fuse. (and Hankins memo dated 5.10.95)
04.19.95-8:55 a.m.
FBI interviewed three witnesses on 04.20.95 who said Unsub #1 closely resembled a person they observed who was still in front of the 5th Street entrance to the Alfred P. Murrah building. (Criminal complaint filed against Timothy McVeigh on 04.21.95.)
04.19.95-9:00 a.m.
He pulled back into the street and at the light at Harvey and NW 5th Street he lit the primary fuse. When the light turned, he pulled into the parking spot in front of the Murrah Building. Possibly two vehicles passed the Ryder truck as he was parking it. One woman looked at Tim as she was headed down the steps to walk into the Murrah Building. She was a white woman, dirty blonde hair, probably mid thirties. He still had on his hat. (and Hankins memo dated 5.10.95)
He left the vehicle in drive, turned off the ignition switch, set the parking brake, dropped the key behind the seat, opened the door, locked it, got out and shut the door behind him. He walked north across Fifth Street into the parking lot without seeing any cars. He did not see any people in the parking lot. He walked down the alley and crossed Robinson Street. He crossed over to the alley behind the YMCA. He did not see any people. He began to jog. At the T behind the YMCA, he turned north into another alley and began to jog when he crossed NW 6th Street. He was about 20 feet into the alley when the bomb went off.
04.19.95-9:02 a.m.
A bomb in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building exploded.

Crash Diary No. 2
Published Feb 1, 2009
Name: Al Haynes, captain
Flight: United Flight 232, Denver to Chicago
Date: July 19, 1989
Incident: Uncontained engine failure, complete loss of flight controls
Fatalities: 111
Survivors: 185
Our No. 2 engine failed us at 37,000 feet, just as we were being vectored east by Minneapolis air-traffic control. We started to shut down the engine using the standard checklist. But within a few seconds, First Officer Bill Records said, “I can’t control the aircraft.” I turned around and saw that he had the controls all the way to the left and back in his lap, even though the aircraft was in a descending right turn. This was impossible, but he was doing it anyway. We couldn’t figure out why.
I took control, not that I knew what to do. As I was reducing the left throttle, Second Officer Dudley Dvorak advised me that we were losing hydraulics in the other two systems, too. The only way to steer an airplane is with hydraulics, and now we had none at all.
I thought to myself, How are we going to keep this thing in the sky? You don’t train or drill for something like this, because it’s just not supposed to happen. After a little while, we determined that by manipulating the throttles, we could keep the airplane from rolling over, and by alternating the thrust we could try to control the altitude.
Our chances of landing this plane at an airport were not very good. The plan was to keep it flying till we got close to the ground and then just ditch it in a field somewhere. Dudley made an announcement about engine failure, explaining to passengers that it would take us a little longer to get to Chicago. One passenger, a pilot named Denny Fitch, tried to calm a concerned flight attendant, explaining that the DC-10 is designed to be able to fly on only two engines. When she told him we’d lost all the hydraulics, he didn’t believe her—How had we been flying?—but he sent word that he was happy to help.
When he entered the cockpit, we had him take the throttle. Bill and I were both flying by the control wheels, which wasn’t doing any good—but we weren’t sure it wasn’t doing any good, so we weren’t going to stop. Denny stood between Bill and me and started manipulating the throttles at our requests for nose up or nose down, and experimenting with how much power to give us.
We flew like that for 45 minutes, trying to maintain our headings, sometimes drifting off and doing a 360-degree turn to catch the heading on the way back. We were aiming for Sioux City now, and about fifteen minutes before we arrived, I got on the air. “I’m not going to kid you,” I told the passengers. “We’re going to make an emergency landing in Sioux City, not Chicago. It’s going to be a very hard landing, harder than anything you’ve been through. Please pay close attention to the flight attendants’ briefing, and we’ll see you in Sioux City.”
We assumed we’d land flat, hit hard, then bounce. Bill said he’d go on the brakes with me, but of course there were no brakes. Then he said that he’d use the spoilers to slow us down, but there were no spoilers, either. We needed something to absorb the shock, so we all agreed that the landing gear had to go down.
We tried to slow down by tipping the nose back up. Bill said, “Ease the throttles back, we’re going too fast.” Denny said, “I can’t—it makes us turn.” We both said, “Okay, okay,” and that’s the last thing I remember. We didn’t know the wing was going to catch on the ground like it did.
I was knocked out after we hit, and I came to in the crash site. I had no idea what had happened. I didn’t realize that the cockpit had broken off from the rest of the fuselage, or that the caught wing had sent the plane cartwheeling down the runway. I do remember talking to Dudley just before they put me on the ambulance. I asked him if everybody had made it, and he said no.
It was very hard to get past the guilt of surviving. My job had been to get people from point A to point B safely, and I didn’t do it. I felt that I had killed them. I had a lot of psychiatric help at the hospital and afterward. Finally, one psychiatrist said, “You’re not going to find an answer. You just have to accept that it happened.”

MANAMA, Bahrain - The U.S. Navy today destroyed two offshore Iranian oil platforms, sank a defending Iranian patrol boat and bombed two Iranian frigates. Iran attacked oil facilities off Sharjah and fired on at least two U.S. vessels.
One U.S. warship fired missiles at two approaching Iranian jet fighters, but the fighters reversed course; it was unclear whether they were hit, Carlucci said.
He said an Iranian patrol boat fired on the U.S. cruiser Wainwright, which took part in the attack on one of the platforms. The Wainwright was not hit.

Fazlollah Zahedi
Fazlollah Zahedi, also spelled Fa?l Allah Zahidi (born 1897 , Iran—died September 2, 1963 , Geneva, Switzerland), Iranian army officer and politician who was prime minister of Iran from 1953 to 1955.
After the assassination of Prime Minister Ali Razmara in 1951, Zahedi was named minister of the interior in the cabinet of the new premier, Husayn Ala, a post he kept in the first cabinet of Mohammad Mosaddeq. Disagreeing with Mosaddeq’s policy, Zahedi resigned in December 1951 and in October 1952 was accused by the prime minister of plotting a coup. In May 1953 Zahedi took refuge in the Majles (parliament), where he was protected by the speaker, Ayatollah Abu al-Qasim Kashani. After Kashani lost his office in July 1953, Zahedi briefly left Iran. The escalating power struggle between Mosaddeq and Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi culminated on August 16, 1953, when the shah fled Iran. Prior to his departure, however, the shah—at the urging of representatives of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency—appointed Zahedi prime minister to replace Mosaddeq. On August 19 forces led by Zahedi overthrew Mosaddeq’s government, assumed effective power, and called the shah back.

Homer is despondent that night at dinner.
Homer: Stupid carbon rod. It's all just a popularity contest!
Bart: Wow! Did you actually get to _see_ the rod?
Marge: Oh, I'm sorry, Homey.
Homer: [mournful] Nobody respects me at work.
Marge: Well _we_ respect you! [Bart writes "Insert Brain Here" on the back of Homer's head] [Lisa and Bart laugh] Bart, I told you, don't draw on your father's skull.
[Marge reads it and begins to chuckle]
Since everyone's laughing, Homer asks, "What does it say? I want to see!" He tries spinning around to see it, but only ends up falling on the ground and gasping as he continues to run in circles. The family's laughter tapers off slowly. Soon, they all groan.
Homer: Ah, TV respects me. It laughs _with_ me, not at me!
[Turns it on; a man points at him]
Man: You stupid -- [laughs uncontrollably]
Homer: D'oh! [switches channels]
The channel Homer happened to flick to shows two men talking about the impending launch of the space shuttle.
Tom: It's a lovely day for a launch, here, live at Cape Canaveral, at the lower end of the Florida Peninsula, and the purpose of today's mission is truly, really electrifying.
Man 2: That's correct, Tom. The lion's share of this flight will be devoted to the study of the effects of weightlessness on tiny screws.
Tom: Unbelievable, and just imagine the logistics of weightlessness. And of course, this could have literally millions of applications here on Earth -- everything from watchmaking to watch repair.
Homer: Boring.
[tries to switch channels, but the batteries fall from the remote control]
No! The batteries!
Tom: Now let's look at the crew a little.
Man 2: They're a colorful bunch. They've been dubbed "the Three Musketeers". Heh heh heh --
Tom: And we laugh legitimately. There's a mathematician, a different _kind_ of mathematician, and a statistician.
Homer: Make it stop!

Encyclopædia Britannica
Edward Charles Titchmarsh
Edward Charles Titchmarsh, (born June 1, 1899—died January 18, 1963), English mathematician whose contributions to analysis placed him at the forefront of his profession.
Titchmarsh graduated from the University of Oxford in 1922 and undertook research under the supervision of Godfrey Hardy, who became the main influence on his mathematical career. In 1923 Titchmarsh was appointed lecturer at University College, London, and in 1929 he was elected professor of pure mathematics at the University of Liverpool. Two years later he returned to Oxford as the Savilian Professor of Geometry. He devoted his early research to the theory of Fourier integrals and series and added new findings to the study of Fourier transforms and the theory of conjugate functions, all of which formed a major part of his Introduction to the Theory of Fourier Integrals (1937). He next turned his attention to the theory of integral functions, especially the Riemann zeta function; he published his results in The Zeta-Function of Riemann (1930) and more fully elaborated this work in The Theory of the Riemann Zeta-Function (1951). From his studies of complex variable theory, he wrote The Theory of Functions (1932), which became a leading textbook on real and complex function theory and was translated into numerous languages.
After 1939 Titchmarsh concentrated his research on the theory of function expansion in eigenfunctions (see eigenvalue) of differential equations, an area of vital importance to quantum field theory, and published many of his results in Eigenfunction Expansions Associated with Second-Order Differential Equations (Part 1, 1946; Part 2, 1958). His contributions helped resolve the differences between the general theory of quantum mechanics and the methods used to solve particular problems in quantum theory. He also wrote a popular Mathematics for the General Reader (1948).
Titchmarsh was elected a fellow of the Royal Society (1931) and was president of the London Mathematical Society (1945–47).

Synopsis for
Field of Dreams (1989)
Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) is a novice farmer who lives in rural Iowa with his wife, Annie (Amy Madigan), and their young daughter Karin (Gaby Hoffmann). Ray's deceased father, John Kinsella (Dwier Brown) loved baseball, the Chicago White Sox, and Shoeless Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta), who was banned from baseball for his part in throwing the 1919 World Series during the so-called 1919 Black Sox scandal. His father, though, seemed "worn down" by life.
While walking through the cornfield, Ray hears a voice whisper, "If you build it, he will come." He imagines a baseball field in his cornfield. Annie is skeptical but she tells him to follow his vision. He works on the field for the next couple of days, hoping to find out what will happen. Neighbors stop along the road to watch and heckle as he plows under the corn. He waits all year to see whatever happens. Nothing happens, leaving a dejected Ray.

Buzz Aldrin: So Barney, we hear you're kickin' ass.
Homer: I, uh, don't think this contest is over yet Buzz. If that is your real name. I believe there is still a little something called the swimsuit competition.

And then I started thinking again about 4/11/91. I had that letter from Maria Coleman with that date. It is also the last day of Operation Desert Storm.

For one, 4/11/91 was the date of that letter from Maria Coleman. 4/11/91 is also the date I found that was the end of the First Gulf War.

yeah.....and that letter from Maria Coleman that was dated 4/11/91. I wrote a while back about how that date was when the First Gulf War ended. What does that mean? She "learned so much more than I have ever learned before" or something like that. I remember that part from the letter because of a curious grammar structure in that sentence. She was the assistant to the President of First Federal Savings and Loan.

"A Boy Named Sue"
My daddy left home when I was three
And he didn't leave much to ma and me
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze.
Now, I don't blame him cause he run and hid
But the meanest thing that he ever did
Was before he left, he went and named me "Sue."
Well, he must o' thought that is quite a joke
And it got a lot of laughs from a' lots of folk,
It seems I had to fight my whole life through.
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head,
I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named "Sue."

The Time Machine
- Why did you?
- Why did I what?
Come after me.
Sit down.
I did it to save your life.
That doesn't seem to mean
much to you, or anybody else.
It doesn't.
Twenty of your friends
were watching you drown.
Not one lifted a finger to save you.
That's a very curious attitude.
A very curious world.
Aren't you interested in who I am?
Where I come from?
Should I be?

The Time Machine
There's nothing to fight with
and few left to fight.
The atmosphere has become
so polluted with germs...
...that it can no longer be breathed.
There is no place left
that is immune.
The last factory for the manufacture
of oxygen has been destroyed.
Stockpiles are rapidly diminishing...
...and when they are gone,
we must die.
My name is of no consequence.
You should know that I am the last
who remembers how each of us...
...man and woman,
made his own decision.
Some chose to take refuge
in the great caverns...
...and find a new way of life
below the Earth's surface.
The rest of us decided
to take our chances in the sunlight...
...small as those chances might be.
From the talking rings I learned
how the human race divided...
...and how the world of the Eloi
and the Morlocks began.
By some awful quirk of fate...
...the Morlocks became the masters
and the Eloi their servants.
The Morlocks maintained them
and bred them like...
...like cattle...
...only to take them below
when they reached maturity.

Quotes
Mrs. Pell: It's not good for you to be here.
Agent Anderson: Why?
Mrs. Pell: It's ugly. This whole thing is so ugly. Have you any idea what it's like to live with all this? People look at us and only see bigots and racists. Hatred isn't something you're born with. It gets taught. At school, they said segregation what's said in the Bible... Genesis 9, Verse 27. At 7 years of age, you get told it enough times, you believe it. You believe the hatred. You live it... you breathe it. You marry it.

Every time I look at this photo of the Saturn moon Phoebe I always tend to linger on that location marked Euphemus.

Image:Phoebe 2005 Mercator PIA07795.jpg
I am not certain if that is where I landed or if it is just an area of high interest to me.
As I was waking up a few minutes ago, my waking or half-sleeping mind was pondering the landing cycle I made on 6/7/1976 and I was thinking of such details as the burn I made in my landing craft after I separated from the Orion ship. The Orion ship proceeded for some kind of orbital rendevous with the planet Saturn and I broke away from the intertia of the Orion ship so I could plunge into the gravity of the moon Phoebe. I made a long burn about 1 hour before landing and then I rotated around to view the approach and then made some minor thruster burns before the final approach. The sunrise cycle on the moon Phoebe is about 9 hours and I landed about 6 hours before the next sunrise. I took a nap on a special kind of couch I had in that landing craft and then I woke up about 3 hours later and began suiting up for EVA which was more difficult because my right arm was still barely usable. I awoke today thinking I was in very good spirits though. I went outside to watch the sunrise and to survey the terrain and I had a camera set to first capture my egress to the surface for the first time and then to record me watching the sunrise. I spoke to myself about how I had been anticipating that moment watching the sun rise over the horizon of the Saturn moon Phoebe back in November 1975 as Phoebe and I watched the sun rise that morning before I left Earth. I also commented to the camera that the surface of the Saturn moon Phoebe was probably the spookiest place I had ever been and I had been to 3 other spooky places before in my life.

[Trying to get Kenny to give up his security blanket]
Jack Butler: I understand that you little guys start out with your woobies and you think they're great... and they are, they are terrific. But pretty soon, a woobie isn't enough. You're out on the street trying to score an electric blanket, or maybe a quilt. And the next thing you know, you're strung out on bedspreads Ken. That's serious.
