Senna-prost Feud Goes Beyond Race Track

PHOENIX — And so begins another year of living dangerously for two of the most bitter adversaries in modern sports history. Ben Johnson and Carl Lewis are the best of friends compared with race drivers Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.

They duel in hot passion with powerful race cars in cool calculation at speeds that reach 200 m.p.h. These are not two pro wrestlers shouting imprecations at each other to build the gate, then going out to dine together. Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost truly do not like each other. ``It`s no secret,`` says Senna, ``that apart from our passion-racing-there is nothing else in common between us.``

They were once teammates but never friends, although once there was a certain level of tolerance. That began to crumble two years ago when Prost felt that his young teammate had betrayed him.

It appeared to have been patched up last summer when the two shook hands on the victory stand at Monaco. But the rupture became irreparable late in the year when Senna crashed Prost out of the race at the start of the Japan Grand Prix, ending the Frenchman`s bid for a fourth world title.

For a time after that Prost was so distraught that he considered quitting. ``I was very close to stopping,`` he says. ``I`d had enough of all the (garbage), but then after two or three weeks it looked like I`d miss Formula One too much.``

So he signed a new contract with Ferrari that ensures two more years of all-out warfare waged on a global battlefield with millions of bug-eyed spectators watching on television throughout the world.

Prost wishes it were otherwise but admits, ``It (the Senna feud) is the most difficult part of the job; it is my biggest problem. It`s good publicity because it gets people interested in Formula One, but on the other side it`s not fair.

``People are much less interested in seeing the technology and in all the talented people working on the car. What we are showing the people is not right. Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost are not the only two drivers in Formula One.``

But in five of the last six seasons, one of them has emerged as champion. The problem began, recalls Prost, in a small way when the two were teammates at McLaren in 1988. Even though Senna won his first world championship that year, Prost was a close second and ``I was quite happy. Any problems I had at that time were not with Ayrton but with the team. I remember I was testing in Brazil and Monza that year and I was going to test for three days. After one day, Senna came in and they gave him the car.``

The breach developed in `89 when Prost and Senna agreed that whoever got the lead in a race at Imola, the other would not try to pass. Prost went to the front and Senna passed him.

``We had a discussion and then he would not talk to me anymore and I don`t understand why,`` Prost says.

Adding fuel to Prost`s resentment is the fact that Senna makes a reported $10 million a year. ``My contract is very lucrative,`` says Prost,

``but it`s much less. It bothers me because I drive the car the same and I work much harder than him in the offseason.``

Senna sees no way the two can stay out of each other`s way given that

``we`ll have two good cars and surely we`ll compete very closely.``

The first shots were fired Friday in first-round qualifying for Sunday`s U.S. Grand Prix and, predictably, Senna and Prost were in the thick of the skirmishing. Ominously for those who hoped Senna`s McLaren-Honda would not yet be up to snuff, the defending champion had the fastest time almost right out of the box, with Prost right behind him.

Then, with just seconds to go, Prost`s young teammate, Jean Alesi, cranked out a lap at 99.656 m.p.h. to take the provisional pole. Saturday-Round 2.

Senna Threatens To Run Away With Grand Prix

PHOENIX — He doesn`t wear black, nor does he wear a perpetual scowl. But Ayrton Senna is every bit ``the Intimidator`` in Formula One racing that Dale Earnhardt is in Winston Cup.

It was not so much that Senna won the pole Saturday for Sunday`s U.S. Grand Prix that cast such an ominous pall over the other contenders for the world championship.

After all, it was the 53rd pole of the Brazilian`s meteoric career, 20 more than any other driver in history. But it came at the outset of a year when the rest of the field felt the domination of Senna`s McLaren-Honda team just might be ending.

And it came when McLaren`s new chassis and Honda V12 engine were virtually untested.

``The two cars our drivers drove yesterday had never turned a wheel before,`` said team manager Ron Dennis. ``There was not one glitch. What we`ve got, I think, is a car we can win the world championship with.

``Remember, Ferrari has had three years of development and they`ve had everything out of it there is to be squeezed out of it. Our car is just beginning. If you think we`re quick now, wait until we get to Imola. We will definitely have a much better engine in Imola.``

That is two races in the future, and if someone doesn`t at least slow down the McLaren express before then, it could be another year like 1988, when McLaren-Honda won 15 of the 16 races.

Nobody expected that to happen this year. Although Senna won six races and his second world championship last year, Ferrari also had six wins, five by Alain Prost, Senna`s archrival.

The Williams team also won two races and was strengthened in the offseason when Nigel Mansell returned to the team with which he had twice finished second in the point standings.

Three-time world champ Nelson Piquet also came back, winning the last two races last season for Benetton-Ford. So it seemed this would be the most competitive season in years, and perhaps it still will be.

Or perhaps Senna`s lap at 102.208 m.p.h., set 49 minutes into Saturday`s one-hour final qualifying period, means the season is over before it begins.

He toured the 2.312-mile street circuit a full second faster than Prost, who had turned the quickest lap of the weekend just nine minutes earlier.

With under five minutes to go, only one driver had a chance to wipe the smile off Senna`s face-Jean Alesi, Prost`s teammate.

Alesi had set the fast time on his final lap Friday to hold the provisional pole. He was the only driver among the top 10 not to better his time Saturday. But here he was on fresh tires making one last charge.

But Alesi`s bid ended abruptly when he clipped a tire barrier and then the concrete wall with less than two minutes to go in the session. Senna began accepting congratulations.

``I was highly motivated,`` he said, ``because by circumstances we lost the provisional pole yesterday.``

He was referring to the fact that, after a late red flag, he was unable to restart his engine and go out again on fresh tires. It was during this period that Alesi knocked him temporarily off the pole.

Prost set the quick time in the 19th minute. Less than a minute later, Senna shunted him aside. The bitter enemies traded places twice more before Senna won.

Of course, it is Sunday`s race-82 laps or two hours, whichever comes first-that counts. And it counts more this year than ever before.

One of several rule changes this year is that the winner of each race gets 10 points instead of nine as in the past. Also, all 16 races count in the standings. Previously, drivers counted only their 11 best races.

Senna is defending champion, though the course has been altered, making it shorter and faster. He always has done well in the U.S. Grand Prix, no matter where, winning four of the last five and never failing to win a race in which his car finished.

He has raced this weekend with a heavy cold, but that isn`t going to stop him, he vows.

The big question now is: If that won`t stop him, what-or who-will?

Senna Brings an Obscure Legend to Light

Professional car racing, like any dangerous sport, tends to attract people who are daring, confident and skilled. Ayrton Senna, the Brazilian Formula One driver who died at the age of 34 during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, was no different. Strikingly handsome, charming and ambitious, Senna makes for a captivating screen presence—an ill-fated matinee idol striding purposefully toward his untimely death in endless, fuzzy clips of archival footage. But while he lived quite literally in the fast lane, the new documentary about his life, which won the World Cinema Audience Award at Sundance in January, drags. Senna’s accomplishments are impressive, but his story seems more suited to an ESPN special than a feature-length film. As long stretches of reverent but irrelevant footage unspool onscreen, it’s hard not to wonder, Why now? Why him?

Senna was born in São Paulo into a wealthy family. Naturally athletic and gear-headed, he began go-kart racing at age 13. But director Asif Kapadia doesn’t dwell on these early years, leaping instead to the 1984 Monaco Grand Prix that established Senna as a rising star of the Formula One franchise. In driving rain, Senna recovered from a slow start in “a car that was not going to win races” to pass every competitor on the track, including frontrunner Alain Prost—although a red flag caused final positions to default to an earlier lap, in which Prost was still leading. Senna took second place in Monaco, but went on to win six Grands Prix over the next three seasons, after which he joined Mr. Prost on the McLaren team (in Formula One, drivers partner with car manufacturers, sort of like baseball franchises, except that in racing members of the same “team” are still in competition with each other).

In the case of Senna and Prost, the competition was particularly bitter, and a good half of the film is devoted to the rivalry between the two racing stars. At the 1988 Portuguese Grand Prix, Senna almost forced Prost off the track, resulting in a warning from the FIA. The following year, at the Japanese Grand Prix, the two men collided on an escape road after Prost cut off his teammate on a sharp turn. Senna rejoined the race and won, only to be disqualified by the FIA for skipping a small portion of the track in his attempt to get his car into the pit for repairs. His license was suspended for six months and he was forced to pay a $100,000 fine. The footage used in the film strongly suggests that this disqualification was a direct result of a complaint by Prost.

The diminutive Frenchman certainly looked the part of the antagonist, even if his motives fell short of true malice. Standing a good six inches shorter than the strapping Senna, with a crooked nose and sad, watery eyes, Mr. Prost had no chance of upstaging the handsome Brazilian no matter how many races he won. But despite Mr. Kapadia’s best efforts, the rivalry never reaches the dramatic heights necessary to justify the amount of time he spends recapping it.

It doesn’t help that Senna appears to have had no other struggles on or off the race track. He loved his family, dated a string of models and generally enjoyed the adoration of the masses. He gave money to help poor children and continually expressed his deep faith in God. There were no injuries, no arrests, no drugs, no torrid affairs—none of the kinds of things that celebrity documentaries feed off of.

There was no change to the entry at Monaco and no change on pole position with Ayrton Senna fastest in his McLaren-Honda. There was a surprise in second place with the Pirelli-shod Tyrrell-Honda of Stefano Modena ahead of Riccardo Patrese's Williams-Renault, Nelson Piquet's Benetton-Ford, Nigel Mansell (Williams), Gerhard Berger (McLaren) and the Ferrari of Alain Prost. The top 10 was rounded off by the Benetton of Roberto Moreno, Jean Alesi's Ferrari and Andrea de Cesaris in his Jordan.

Modena made a good start but Senna took the lead with Modena second ahead of Patrese, Mansell and Prost. Berger ran into Piquet at the first corner and Piquet was out. Berger would disappear soon afterwards. After stopping for repairs he was charging back when he hit the wall in the Swimming Pool area while trying to wipe his visor. Modena suffered badly from traffic and so fell back to Patrese. Pierluigi Martini was the cause and he became the first man in F1 history to get a 10-second stop-go penalty, which meant going into the pits and waiting 10 seconds before being allowed back onto the track.

On lap 30 Prost overtook Mansell for fourth place but otherwise the order was stable until lap 43 when Modena's engine blew up in the tunnel. Patrese hit the oil and spun wildly. This left Senna with a huge advantage over Prost with Mansell, his engine problem suddenly curing itself, beginning to charge. Alesi continued his lonely race in fourth and Moreno did the same in fifth.

On lap 63 Mansell dived ahead of Prost with a wild manoeuvre but Prost was smart enough to keep out of the way of the errant Williams. Prost's race was ruined when he had to pit to have a wheel tightened and so he finished fifth behind Senna

The Breakup of Yugoslavia, 1990–1992


Yugoslavia—the land of South (i.e. Yugo) Slavs—was created at the end of World War I when Croat, Slovenian, and Bosnian territories that had been part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire united with the Serbian Kingdom. The country broke up under Nazi occupation during World War II with the creation of a Nazi-allied independent Croat state, but was reunified at the end of the war when the communist-dominated partisan force of Josip Broz Tito liberated the country. Following the end of World War II, Yugoslavian unity was a top priority for the U.S. Government. While ostensibly a communist state, Yugoslavia broke away from the Soviet sphere of influence in 1948, became a founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement in 1961, and adopted a more de-centralized and less repressive form of government as compared with other East European communist states during the Cold War.

The varied reasons for the country’s breakup ranged from the cultural and religious divisions between the ethnic groups making up the nation, to the memories of WWII atrocities committed by all sides, to centrifugal nationalist forces. However, a series of major political events served as the catalyst for exacerbating inherent tensions in the Yugoslav republic. Following the death of Tito in 1980, provisions of the 1974 constitution provided for the effective devolution of all real power away from the federal government to the republics and autonomous provinces in Serbia by establishing a collective presidency of the eight provincial representatives and a federal government with little control over economic, cultural, and political policy. External factors also had a significant impact. The collapse of communism in Eastern Europe in 1989, the unification of Germany one year later, and the imminent collapse of the Soviet Union all served to erode Yugoslavia’s political stability. As Eastern European states moved away from communist government and toward free elections and market economies, the West’s attention focused away from Yugoslavia and undermined the extensive economic and financial support necessary to preserve a Yugoslav economy already close to collapse. The absence of a Soviet threat to the integrity and unity of Yugoslavia and its constituent parts meant that a powerful incentive for unity and cooperation was removed.

Slobodan Milosevic, Serbia’s president from 1989, took advantage of the vacuum created by a progressively weakening central state and brutally deployed the use of Serbian ultra-nationalism to fan the flames of conflict in the other republics and gain legitimacy at home. Milosevic started as a banker in Belgrade and became involved in politics in the mid-1980s. He rose quickly through the ranks to become head of the Serbian Communist Party in 1986. While attending a party meeting in the Albanian-dominated province of Kosovo in May 1987, Serbians in the province rioted outside the meeting hall. Milosevic spoke with the rioters and listened to their complaints of mistreatment by the Albanian majority. His actions were extensively reported by Serbian-controlled Yugoslav mass media, beginning the process of transforming the former banker into the stalwart symbol of Serbian nationalism. Having found a new source of legitimacy, Milosevic quickly shored up his power in Serbia through control of the party apparatus and the press. He moved to strip the two autonomous provinces of Kosovo and Vojvodina of their constitutionally-guaranteed autonomy within Serbia by using mass rallies to force the local leaderships to resign in favor of his own preferred candidates. By mid-1989 Kosovo and Vojvodina had been reintegrated into Serbia, and the Montenegro leadership was replaced by Milosevic allies.

The ongoing effects of democratization in Eastern Europe were felt throughout Yugoslavia. As Milosevic worked to consolidate power in Serbia, elections in Slovenia and Croatia in 1990 gave non-communist parties control of the state legislatures and governments. Slovenia was the first to declare “sovereignty” in 1990, issuing a parliamentary declaration that Slovenian law took precedence over Yugoslav law. Croatia followed in May, and in August, the Yugoslav republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina also declared itself sovereign. Slovenia and Croatia began a concerted effort to transform Yugoslavia from a federal state to a confederation. With the administration of George H. W. Bush focused primarily on the Soviet Union, Germany, and the crisis in the Persian Gulf, Yugoslavia had lost the geostrategic importance it enjoyed during the Cold War. While Washington attempted during the summer of 1990 to marshal some limited coordination with its Western allies in case the Yugoslav crisis turned bloody, Western European governments maintained a wait-and-see attitude. At the same time, inter-republic relations in Yugoslavia spiraled out of control. Slovenia overwhelmingly voted for independence in December 1990. A Croatian referendum in May 1991 also supported full independence. Secretary of State James Baker traveled to Belgrade to meet with Yugoslav leaders and urge a political solution to no avail. Slovenia and Croatia both declared formal independence on June 25, 1991.

John Bernard Books, a gunfighter approaching his 58th birthday, finds that he has rectal cancer and two months to live. He takes a room with Bond Rogers and her son, Gillom, to wait until death comes. Of course, his very presence starts off events in the town. The Marshal comes, prepared to die in a shootout, Gillom tries to idolize him, Bond first is disgusted and then pities him. In a surprise move, Matthew Stuart pleaded guilty today to taking part in an insurance-fraud scheme with his brother that led to the 1989 shooting death of his brother's pregnant wife, Carol Stuart.

Mr. Stuart's unexpected plea ended a case that had heightened racial tensions in Boston and attracted nationwide attention. But it shed no new light on the incident and suggested that there would never be a full explanation of Mrs. Stuart's killing. Authorities have said they believed that Charles Stuart shot her shortly after the couple left a childbirth class on Oct. 23, 1989.


Charles Stuart had claimed that a black robber broke into their car, shot Mrs. Stuart and then badly wounded him with a shot in the abdomen. His cries for help on his car phone were broadcast on national television.

Both the police and news organizations quickly accepted his account, and the police and prosecutors identified a black man with a criminal record, William Bennett, as a suspect.

Jumped to His Death

Three months later, after Matthew Stuart went to the police on Jan. 3, 1990, and confessed to taking part in the crime did attention focus on Charles Stuart. The next day, Charles Stuart apparently jumped to his death from the Tobin Bridge into Boston Harbor.
