Fat Man and Little Boy (1989) (to be continued)
I've been trying to remember the first time I watched that film.
I have no idea.
I want to say I watched it before 1990. That would mean when we were deployed to the Med.
But I really have no idea. I just feel that I could have seen it in 1989. I wouldn't have seen it in the theatres because I was deployed overseas.
I just try to focus on the sense I have of those so-called "conventional" memories in my mind and to consider that I watched it in 1990 but that just doesn't feel right.
But my memory is really unreliable. I can think back to so many other times with little stuff that I was wrong about.
I write about this now in these lines at the beginning of this report and this report is something I have worked over for several hours and this portion of free text is something I put in here towards the point I posted this report on my blog.
If someone had asked me yesterday to write a synopsis of that film I probably would have written about the scene with the chalk-outline footprints in the lab. Other details in the few minutes before that are not something I would have recalled. But I was sitting here thinking about how I would not have done anything so damned stupid with something electrically conductive even back in the year 1988. Whether that is what really happened to that guy I don't know and I haven't looked it up.
So anyway, I don't recall when I first watched "Fat Man and Little Boy." I do not recall the last time I watched it. Much of it is familiar though as though I have seen it many times. Or it just stuck in my mind the one time or more I watched it.
I really do not think I have watched it in the past ten years.
The ending seems less familiar. Less familiar as though it is an old memory filtered from my mind. I mean, the ending is about historical fact. There is really no suspense there. So that reinforces my theory I have not watched that production in more than a decade.
I would really like to watch tonight for the first time the 2006 film "The Lake House" on DVD but I don't want to make another blog post tonight so I probably won't. I'll probably watch the DVD for the 2003 miniseries "Battlestar Galactica" or maybe the DVD for the 1994 miniseries "The Stand" although I will probably end up watching the former.
These damned blog posts take up so damned much of my time to produce. I mean, this is all the reason I went to the stupid goddamned police in the first place.
Having just now watched the final scenes of "Fat Man and Little Boy" I think, again, of how the film seems almost ruined by having that actor Dwight Schultz portray Oppenheimer. Then I see the next scene remind me that Newman is Groves and, I don't know. I wonder why Schultz was chosen. I think back to my theory about the 1990 film "The Hunt for Red October" and of how the actor Scott Glenn portrayed the commander of the Tom Clancy-fictional "USS Dallas" and I think: those are human beings that actively support George Bush Soviet communists violently against the United States of America. I think that Scott Glenn is a communist pervert.

Groves: Even Bronson wants to head for the front.
General: Groves, forget about going to the front. You're an engineer. You're going to fight your war here. That's where you're going to fight.
Groves: Is this what you're assigning me to? This boondoggle? Dead end?
General: This dead end, Groves, has the personal backing of the president.
Groves: This is not what I was promised, this is not what I was expecting.
General: Then bone up on it. Head to Chicago, talk to the scientist. If it looks possible, run with it. Take whoever you want. Have whatever you need. Just make it work. Who knows, you just might win this war on your own. Pick up a star on the way.

Oppenheimer: If you had been there last night you would understand what free discussion was all about because Neddermeyer's idea was brilliant. An implosion. An explosion that goes inwards producing uniform compression in the core and it would be lightweight. So there is no gun barrel, there is no velocity and there is no weight problem. And all of that out of free discussion. You've got to give us room to breathe.

"Do You Remember?"
We never talked about it
But I hear the blame was mine
I'd call you up to say I'm sorry
But I wouldn't want to waste your time
'Cos I love you, but I can't take any more
There's a look I can't describe in your eyes
Yes we could try, like we tried before
When you kept on telling me those lies
Do you remember...?
There seemed no way to make up
'Cos it seemed your mind was set
And the way you looked it told me
It's a look I know I'll never forget

PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT’S REMARKS AT THE UNVEILING OF THE HEAD OF THOMAS JEFFERSON, AUGUST 30, 1936
Gutzon Borglum (Sculptor) introduction:
“I want you, Mr. President, to dedicate this memorial as a Shrine to Democracy; to call upon the people of the earth for one hundred thousand years to come to read the thought and to see what manner of men struggled here to establish self-determined government in the western world. With the prayer that it shall not perish from the earth.”
President Roosevelt spoke as follows:
“I think, my friends, that there are two people who told me about this in the early days – one of them was Mr. Borglum and the other was Senator Norbeck.
“On many occasions, when a new project is presented to you on paper and then, later on, you see the accomplishment, you are disappointed: but it is just the opposite of that in what we are looking at now. I had seen the photographs: I had seen the drawings and I had talked with those who are responsible for this great work, and yet I had had no conception until about ten minutes ago not only of its magnitude but of its permanent beauty and of its permanent importance.

The American Presidency Project
Franklin D. Roosevelt
XXXII President of the United States: 1933-1945
111 - Remarks at Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
August 30, 1936
I think my friends, that there are two people who told me about this in the early days. One of them was Mr. Borglum and the other was Senator Norbeck.
On many occasions, when a new project is presented to you on paper, and, later on you see the accomplishment, you are disappointed; but just the opposite is the fact in what we are looking at now. I had seen photographs, I had seen the drawings, and I had talked with those who are responsible for this great work. Yet I had had no conception until about ten minutes ago, not only of its magnitude, but of its permanent beauty and of its permanent importance.
Mr. Borglum has well said that this can be a monument and an inspiration for the continuance of the Democratic-Republican form of government, not only in our own beloved country, but, we hope, throughout the world.
This is the second dedication. There will be others by other Presidents in other years. When we get through, there will be something for the American people that will last not merely through generations but for thousands and thousands of years.
I think that we can perhaps meditate a little on those Americans ten thousand years from now, when the weathering on the faces of Washington and Jefferson and Lincoln shall have proceeded to perhaps the depth of a tenth of an inch, and wonder what our descendants—and I think they will still be here will think about us.
Let us hope that at least they will give us the benefit of the doubt, that they will believe we have honestly striven every day and generation to preserve for our descendants a decent land to live in and a decent form of government to operate under.
I am very glad to have come here today informally. It is right and proper that I should have come informally, because we do not want formalities where Nature is concerned.
What we have done so far exemplifies what I have been talking about in the last few days—cooperation with Nature and not fighting against Nature.
I am happy to congratulate all of you not only on what we see today, but on what is going to happen in the future at Mount Rushmore.

Gates Foundation breaks ground
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will build its $500 million headquarters across from the Seattle Center.
By Kristi Heim
Seattle Times business reporter
The global aims of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation took shape Tuesday in the heart of Seattle, where what was once a Native American ceremonial camp is becoming the $500 million headquarters of the world's largest charitable foundation.
The foundation broke ground on its 900,000-square-foot campus, a symbol of interest in philanthropy and global health in the region.
Seattle has made its mark through aviation and information technology, and the Gates Foundation aspires to make global health the next world-changing industry with roots in the Pacific Northwest, foundation co-chairwoman Melinda Gates said. As she spoke, construction workers began tearing up pavement on Fifth Avenue across from the Space Needle.
The 1962 World's Fair brought a new global identity to Seattle, she said, and since then, "a global outlook is really at the core of what Seattle stands for."
With more than $1.5 billion a year from Warren Buffett's gift now pouring into the Gates Foundation

I'm so excited to be here. We have all been working on this project for so long, and I can hardly believe today has finally come. Of course, today means two more years of hard work before the ribbon cutting ceremony!
For all of you who work at the foundation, you've been shuttling back and forth among five different offices, and I want to thank you for continuing to do great work under circumstances that aren't exactly ideal.

The essential idea is engagement. That's why we decided to build right here at Seattle Center. We want to be a part of this community, of this world. We do not want to sit up on a hilltop or way out in the suburbs where people can't reach us.
And that's why we're so excited about the visitor center that will be a part of these headquarters. Part of our job is to help people learn about some of the problems that face our world. And to inspire them to help solve those problems. And that's what the visitor center will do.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Microsoft founder Bill Gates, the world's richest man, has created the country's wealthiest foundation, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy.
Gates and his wife, Melinda, have consolidated their two charitable foundations and donated an additional $6 billion to the newly named Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, bringing its total worth to $17.1 billion, according to a report published on the Chronicle's Web site Sunday and confirmed by a co-chair of the Gates Foundation. The couple decided to merge the William H. Gates Foundation, named after Gates' father, and the Gates Learning Foundation so they could broaden their focus on learning and global health, said Patty Stonesifer, foundation co-chairwoman.
The move catapults the Seattle-based foundation to the top of the Chronicle's list of wealthiest charitble foundations, the newspaper said.

By Helen Jung
Seattle Times Technology Reporter
THE COMBINED Gates foundation will have assets of $17.1 billion, making it the second-largest charitable trust in the world. Just to meet federal rules, it will have to give away $500 million by the end of the year.
Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda French Gates, are merging their two charitable foundations and committing an additional $6 billion to create the country's largest philanthropic foundation.
The new entity, called the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, will boast a $17.1 billion endowment and target improving health and education around the world. The venture combines the William H. Gates Foundation, created in 1994, with the Gates Learning Foundation, which was created in 1997 under a different name. The merger is expected to be completed by Jan. 1.

At that committe meeting meeting tomorrow there's going to be a committee meeting on this demonstration. There's going to be a recommendation going to the President. Now, listen. You can help yourself here. Steer it in the right direction. You're either for us or against us. Ernest, how are you? I'd like to introduce Dr. Robert Oppenheimer here.

244 - Address to the Nation Announcing Decision To Resign the Office of President of the United States.
August 8, 1974
I have never been a quitter. To leave office before my term is completed is abhorrent to every instinct in my body. But as President, I must put the interests of America first. America needs a full-time President and a full-time Congress, particularly at this time with problems we face at home and abroad.
To continue to fight through the months ahead for my personal vindication would almost totally absorb the time and attention of both the President and the Congress in a period when our entire focus should be on the great issues of peace abroad and prosperity without inflation at home.
Therefore, I shall resign the Presidency

Damn, I think that is what happened. They incorporated what I did into Flight Of The Intruder. Assuming it is true that I warned them of my intentions first, they incorporated that into that part where Grafton didn't arm the bombs first and they really opened up on him when he came through because they were alerted. Then, that part where Cole talks about keeping the faith. Maybe that memory of the roof liner falling on my head in Donald Mills truck represents getting hit by AAA or something. I wonder though if some experiences are mixed into other memories. That part of me demolishing those concrete steps most probably represents the strike on Osirq in '81, although I have no direct memory of it or even of ever flying any kind of aircraft. But the part about the crying kid and the father blaming me for hitting her with shrapnel, which didn't happen, seems to be from something else. The empty trailer lot suggests to me that it was the strike on Osiraq before they put the radioactive elements into it.
I remember too, and wonder what it means, that time Jim Shea, formerly of Hollywood, was thrown into the brig on bread and water.
I also wonder who Chad Trammel is supposed to represent.

I had reported to the Wainwright not long before this day and Jim Shea and I and some other people were renting a mobile home off base. It was something not much diffent than "Animal House" and we had some pretty rowdy parties there. One day, as was usual, we were getting drunk, and for some reason, I was in a fight with another guy, as happened sometimes. I kicked him or something as I was sitting on the tailgate. I remember also there was something different about the wheels on my pickup, some unimportant component of the wheel. I can't remember that guys name but he grabbed my foot and pulled me off the tailgate. I hit the ground squarely on my back with a great thud. It didn't hurt me but it was certainly a jolt. It feels as though there should be something else though, one of those symbolic memories that hits me hard when I see it.

Jim Shea told me one day on the Wainwright, as I was showing him my latest creation in BASIC on the Commodore, something about how I would be successful working in some back room somewhere writing software like that. I remember later thinking that I had proven I could be just as successful in the front office too, because of the success I enjoyed working for Ketterman's on that contract with the bank First Federal.

I wonder why I have the memory of almost losing my wallet when I went to see this movie. I was at my off-base Charleston, SC, apartment when I went to see the movie with Jim Shea and his girlfriend, Phyllis, both formerly of Hollywood, FL. They didn’t really want to go see it but went along after asking me what I wanted to see. After we got back to the apartment, I realized I had lost my wallet and went back to the theatre to look for it. I was relieved that I was able to find the very seat I had been sitting in and the wallet was still there.

Why do I have specific “memories” about Pink Floyd? I “remember” driving a white car on a road through Oklahoma as we were coming back from visiting grandpa Fletcher. Melissa was in the front seat and Betty and Caitlin, probably Kayli too were sitting in the back. I was listening to Pink Floyd, a CD I guess, and told Melissa how much I enjoyed listening to them. Caitlin said she was tired of hearing them. Years earlier, Jim Shea, formerly of Hollywood, FL, had given me Pink Floyd’s “The Final Cut” CD for my birthday.

Project Gutenberg's The Time Machine, by H. G. (Herbert George) Wells
Title: The Time Machine
Author: H. G. (Herbert George) Wells
III
'I told some of you last Thursday of the principles of the Time Machine, and showed you the actual thing itself, incomplete in the workshop. There it is now, a little travel-worn, truly; and one of the ivory bars is cracked, and a brass rail bent; but the rest of it's sound enough. I expected to finish it on Friday, but on Friday, when the putting together was nearly done, I found that one of the nickel bars was exactly one inch too short, and this I had to get remade; so that the thing was not complete until this morning. It was at ten o'clock to-day that the first of all Time Machines began its career. I gave it a last tap, tried all the screws again, put one more drop of oil on the quartz rod, and sat myself in the saddle. I suppose a suicide who holds a pistol to his skull feels much the same wonder at what will come next as I felt then. I took the starting lever in one hand and the stopping one in the other, pressed the first, and almost immediately the second. I seemed to reel; I felt a nightmare sensation of falling; and, looking round, I saw the laboratory exactly as before. Had anything happened? For a moment I suspected that my intellect had tricked me. Then I noted the clock. A moment before, as it seemed, it had stood at a minute or so past ten; now it was nearly half-past three!
'I drew a breath, set my teeth, gripped the starting lever with both hands, and went off with a thud. The laboratory got hazy and went dark. Mrs. Watchett came in and walked, apparently without seeing me, towards the garden door. I suppose it took her a minute or so to traverse the place, but to me she seemed to shoot across the room like a rocket. I pressed the lever over to its extreme position. The night came like the turning out of a lamp, and in another moment came to-morrow. The laboratory grew faint and hazy, then fainter and ever fainter. To-morrow night came black, then day again, night again, day again, faster and faster still. An eddying murmur filled my ears, and a strange, dumb confusedness descended on my mind.
'I am afraid I cannot convey the peculiar sensations of time travelling. They are excessively unpleasant. There is a feeling exactly like that one has upon a switchback—of a helpless headlong motion! I felt the same horrible anticipation, too, of an imminent smash. As I put on pace, night followed day like the flapping of a black wing. The dim suggestion of the laboratory seemed presently to fall away from me, and I saw the sun hopping swiftly across the sky, leaping it every minute, and every minute marking a day. I supposed the laboratory had been destroyed and I had come into the open air. I had a dim impression of scaffolding, but I was already going too fast to be conscious of any moving things. The slowest snail that ever crawled dashed by too fast for me. The twinkling succession of darkness and light was excessively painful to the eye. Then, in the intermittent darknesses, I saw the moon spinning swiftly through her quarters from new to full, and had a faint glimpse of the circling stars. Presently, as I went on, still gaining velocity, the palpitation of night and day merged into one continuous greyness; the sky took on a wonderful deepness of blue, a splendid luminous color like that of early twilight; the jerking sun became a streak of fire, a brilliant arch, in space; the moon a fainter fluctuating band; and I could see nothing of the stars, save now and then a brighter circle flickering in the blue.
'The landscape was misty and vague. I was still on the hill-side upon which this house now stands, and the shoulder rose above me grey and dim. I saw trees growing and changing like puffs of vapour, now brown, now green; they grew, spread, shivered, and passed away. I saw huge buildings rise up faint and fair, and pass like dreams. The whole surface of the earth seemed changed—melting and flowing under my eyes. The little hands upon the dials that registered my speed raced round faster and faster. Presently I noted that the sun belt swayed up and down, from solstice to solstice, in a minute or less, and that consequently my pace was over a year a minute; and minute by minute the white snow flashed across the world, and vanished, and was followed by the bright, brief green of spring.
'The unpleasant sensations of the start were less poignant now. They merged at last into a kind of hysterical exhilaration. I remarked indeed a clumsy swaying of the machine, for which I was unable to account. But my mind was too confused to attend to it, so with a kind of madness growing upon me, I flung myself into futurity. At first I scarce thought of stopping, scarce thought of anything but these new sensations. But presently a fresh series of impressions grew up in my mind—a certain curiosity and therewith a certain dread—until at last they took complete possession of me. What strange developments of humanity, what wonderful advances upon our rudimentary civilization, I thought, might not appear when I came to look nearly into the dim elusive world that raced and fluctuated before my eyes! I saw great and splendid architecture rising about me, more massive than any buildings of our own time, and yet, as it seemed, built of glimmer and mist. I saw a richer green flow up the hill-side, and remain there, without any wintry intermission. Even through the veil of my confusion the earth seemed very fair. And so my mind came round to the business of stopping.
'The peculiar risk lay in the possibility of my finding some substance in the space which I, or the machine, occupied. So long as I travelled at a high velocity through time, this scarcely mattered; I was, so to speak, attenuated—was slipping like a vapour through the interstices of intervening substances! But to come to a stop involved the jamming of myself, molecule by molecule, into whatever lay in my way; meant bringing my atoms into such intimate contact with those of the obstacle that a profound chemical reaction—possibly a far-reaching explosion—would result, and blow myself and my apparatus out of all possible dimensions—into the Unknown. This possibility had occurred to me again and again while I was making the machine; but then I had cheerfully accepted it as an unavoidable risk—one of the risks a man has got to take! Now the risk was inevitable, I no longer saw it in the same cheerful light. The fact is that, insensibly, the absolute strangeness of everything, the sickly jarring and swaying of the machine, above all, the feeling of prolonged falling, had absolutely upset my nerve. I told myself that I could never stop, and with a gust of petulance I resolved to stop forthwith. Like an impatient fool, I lugged over the lever, and incontinently the thing went reeling over, and I was flung headlong through the air.
'There was the sound of a clap of thunder in my ears. I may have been stunned for a moment. A pitiless hail was hissing round me, and I was sitting on soft turf in front of the overset machine. Everything still seemed grey, but presently I remarked that the confusion in my ears was gone. I looked round me. I was on what seemed to be a little lawn in a garden, surrounded by rhododendron bushes, and I noticed that their mauve and purple blossoms were dropping in a shower under the beating of the hail-stones. The rebounding, dancing hail hung in a cloud over the machine, and drove along the ground like smoke. In a moment I was wet to the skin. "Fine hospitality," said I, "to a man who has travelled innumerable years to see you."
'Presently I thought what a fool I was to get wet. I stood up and looked round me. A colossal figure, carved apparently in some white stone, loomed indistinctly beyond the rhododendrons through the hazy downpour. But all else of the world was invisible.
'My sensations would be hard to describe. As the columns of hail grew thinner, I saw the white figure more distinctly. It was very large, for a silver birch-tree touched its shoulder. It was of white marble, in shape something like a winged sphinx, but the wings, instead of being carried vertically at the sides, were spread so that it seemed to hover. The pedestal, it appeared to me, was of bronze, and was thick with verdigris. It chanced that the face was towards me; the sightless eyes seemed to watch me; there was the faint shadow of a smile on the lips. It was greatly weather-worn, and that imparted an unpleasant suggestion of disease. I stood looking at it for a little space—half a minute, perhaps, or half an hour. It seemed to advance and to recede as the hail drove before it denser or thinner. At last I tore my eyes from it for a moment and saw that the hail curtain had worn threadbare, and that the sky was lightening with the promise of the sun.
'I looked up again at the crouching white shape, and the full temerity of my voyage came suddenly upon me. What might appear when that hazy curtain was altogether withdrawn? What might not have happened to men? What if cruelty had grown into a common passion? What if in this interval the race had lost its manliness and had developed into something inhuman, unsympathetic, and overwhelmingly powerful? I might seem some old-world savage animal, only the more dreadful and disgusting for our common likeness—a foul creature to be incontinently slain.
