Major General Marion Eugene Carl, USMC, (November 1, 1915 – June 28, 1998) was a World War II fighter ace, record-setting test pilot, and naval aviator. He was the Marine Corps' first ace in WWII.


Carl received his second star as a major general in 1967, commanding the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina from 1968 to 1970. He subsequently served as Inspector General of the Marine Corps, until retiring in 1973.

Murder

Carl returned to his native Oregon, where he and his wife Edna settled near Roseburg. Marion Carl's memoir, Pushing the Envelope, coauthored with his friend Barrett Tillman, was published in 1994. In 1998, at age 82, he was shot to death with a shotgun during a robbery, defending Edna from a home invader. Carl was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.

His murderer, 19-year-old Jesse Fanus, was apprehended one week later. In April 1999, he was convicted on two counts of aggravated murder (and 11 additional felony charge) and sentenced to death. In 2003, his conviction and death sentence were upheld by the Oregon Supreme Court. In December 2011, the sentence was overturned based on the prisoner's inadequate legal representation; a new sentencing session is expected in 2015.

Everclear's Alexakis Creates His Songs' Cast Of Characters

Everclear's publicity agent offered a warning when she scheduled a chat with the Portland, Ore., band's lead singer Art Alexakis: He would be doing several interviews that day, she said, and although this interview was set for 12:15 p.m., she said that the call might not actually come until 12:20 or 12:25 p.m. ``Art tends to talk a lot,'' she explained.

The warning didn't come as a big surprise. What else would you expect from a singer-songwriter who has disspelled his band's grunge image by doing what most grunge bands aren't known for doing: Alexakis tells stories.

``People talk about the influence of grunge on our band, but we're really more of an American rock band,'' he said. ``I consider myself to be a singer-songwriter and look at people like Springsteen as more of an influence than (Kurt) Cobain. I like Nirvana, but I couldn't say that I was influenced by them. I like to tell a story.''

In fact, Alexakis tells his stories, most of which focus on down-and-out characters in desperate situations, so well and with such heartfelt honesty that fans tend to believe that what they're hearing is an autobiographical account of his life. (Everclear will perform Wednesday at the House of Blues at Downtown Disney West Side.)

``I try to talk about things I know about,'' Alexakis said. ``But my characters are more of a combination of people or how I imagine people would feel.''

Not that his own life couldn't turn out enough stories to fill up a feature film, if not a week's miniseries.

Alexakis grew up in Santa Monica, Calif., where he lived with his mother until the 8th grade. At that time, he was kicked out of junior high and sent to juvenile hall. From there, he was shipped to Roseburg, Ore., to live with his sister; that is where he began to experiment with drugs.
