Management is probably the most important element in an institution's operations. All areas of operations, including assets, capital, earnings, liquidity, and compliance, are affected by management actions. As such, management must have a thorough and complete understanding of the interrelationships between these areas and how their decisions will affect the soundness of the institution. [I suspect Microsoft began to suspect that I was assessing the effectiveness of Microsoft management. It wouldn't be the first time people have wondered who I was. I suspect there was several different factions trying to exploit the my presence. One faction knew that Microsoft was not going to look good, simply because Microsoft managment has been historically ineffective, primarily because they had a monopoly. A relevant example is these oil-rich countries that do not depend on tax revenue from its citizens and therefore do not need to worry about the rights of the people, or at least they only need to create an appearance of caring. I believe Microsoft is the same way because they have had a couple cash cows for so long. So anyway, this one faction decided to latch onto me, a form of equivoction, for at least two reasons. One was to affect the outcome somehow, the other to be positively associated me. The can equivocate by pointing to me as an agent for positive change but still have no intention of meaningful change. As far as I know, I am the only one they took this approach with, and I suspect all because of that one turn of bad luck on Dec. 7, 1998. Also, this particular excerpt may seem to specialized to be relevant, but I believe it is a relevant example in terms of managment adequacy.]

Why Ballmer? Why did Gates put Ballmer in as CEO of Microsoft? My hunch is that he did it for one reason: to fail. Gates needed to disassociate with leading Microsoft as much as possible to reduce government pressure. But it wasn't as simple as just giving it to someone else. For one thing, he wasn't really giving it up, he was just the equivalent of an ejected baseball coach who hid at the entrance of the tunnel to the locker room and kept calling plays. Another problem is that while someone else would be officially responsible for the management functions, Gates' leadership legacy would be present for many years to come because these things don't just change overnight. So Gates needed to put someone in that would most likely fail. Because if he put someone in that would be recognized as a better leader than he, that would only defeat the purpose. As a better leader was recognized for being a better leader than Gates, that would draw attention to all the bad things Gates had done while in charge of Microsoft. However, if Gates put in someone that would fail, as Ballmer has done over these past several years, Gates' failing would not be discussed as much and focus would be on Ballmer's deficiencies. Gates may even find himself taking back the CEO role, but I doubt it. As long as he has someone in at the CEO role that is failing to perform well, Gates' legacy is preserved or even improved.

Joan George Erardus Gijsbertus Voûte (June 7, 1879 – August 20, 1963) was a Dutch astronomer.
He was born in Madioen, Java to a Huguenot family. He studied civil engineering at Delft, but while a student he gained an interest in astronomy—studying variable stars. After graduating he joined the staff of the Leiden Observatory, where he worked on binary stars. In 1913 he gained a post at the Cape Observatory in South Africa, where he worked on double stars and parallax measurements. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1917. His preliminary account of the parallax of Proxima Centauri was published in 1917, demonstrating that Proxima was the same distance from the Sun as the Alpha Centauri system.
