They all remember the sound and the feel and not knowing what it was.

It was "sort of like a sonic boom," said Jerry Milford, 38, of Indianapolis, traveling with his family in Row 37, the second-to-last row of United Airlines Flight 232.

It felt like "a sudden, strong jolt," said A. Upton Rehnberg, 52, of Rockford, Ill., an executive with an aircraft-parts manufacturer, seated in Row 9 at the front of the coach section.

It was "kind of like an explosion. . . . It almost felt like you hit something," said Donna Treber, 47, of Westminster, Colo., a businesswoman seated in Row 15.

What they heard and felt at 3:16 CDT Wednesday afternoon six miles over Iowa was the rear engine blowing apart on their DC-10 jumbo jet with 296 people on board.

Precisely what happened to that General Electric CF6-6 engine will be determined by federal investigators in the weeks ahead. What happened inside the plane is already seared forever in the memories of the survivors.

They will never forget the sense of imminent doom, the frightening approach to the Sioux Gateway Airport, the impact of the plane crashing into the cornfield, the flash of flame, the moment they realized they were not going to die and the moment they realized that many of their fellow passengers had not been so fortunate.

That might be it. St. Croix was in 1985 on the FFG 50 and Barbados was in 1989 on the CG 28.

The track for the 1989 Hurricane Hugo as it crosses the Atlantic from east to west has about half that track pointed almost directly at where Barbados is located. After Hurricane Hugo passes the halfway point, it starts to curve towards Puerto Rico and then it pivots there and almost makes a straight line for Charleston SC.

The track of Hurricane Hugo in 1989 makes it seem to have been following me. I wasn't in Charleston SC though when it made landfall and I was onboard the CG 28 as we made an emergency departure from port to avoid the storm.

Hurricane Hugo Rips Through South Carolina

135-Mph Winds, Tides Pound Charleston Area

CHARLESTON, S.C., SEPT. 21 -- The eye of Hurricane Hugo, the region's most severe storm in 35 years, moved into South Carolina here about 11:30 p.m. with 135 mph winds and about a five-foot tidal surge that battered a wide area around this 319-year-old city, which was largely deserted.

Torrential rain and damaging winds shook the area, and severe flooding was reported, although the tidal surge was thought to be far greater -- perhaps as high as 17 feet -- about 25 miles north near the tiny town of McClellanville.

Charleston County and neighboring Georgetown County were reported using only emergency power about midnight, and telephone service went dead shortly after 11 p.m.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or estimates of damage from officials at the state's emergency preparedness center in the capital at Columbia about 100 miles away. One tornado was reported in the Columbia area.

Initial damage reports were spotty because of communications problems, and many involved roofs. The center said the roof of the National Weather Service building at Charleston Air Force Base blew off about two minutes after officials there reported by ham radio that Hugo's eye was above them.

In Georgetown near the coast north of Charleston, the center said, the roof blew off a school being used as a shelter, but no injuries were reported.

At 2 a.m. Friday, as Hugo slammed 100 mph winds at Berkeley County about 25 miles north of Charleston, authorities there cited "a chaotic situation" and asked for National Guard help in rescue and road-clearing operations, saying that people were stranded and that fire trucks could not reach blazes. No injuries were reported.

Officials at two Charleston hospitals said early Friday morning that no injured people had been treated, but one added, "No one can move around."

In Charleston about 10 p.m., windows had begun bulging and popping at the eight-story Omni Hotel near the Battery along the sea wall. Authorities said the windows had been tested to withstand winds of 250 mph.

Just before midnight, the National Hurricane Center reported from Coral Gables, Fla., that winds in downtown Charleston were being measured at 100 mph with gusts to 119 mph.

The center said that most of Hugo's punch was in the portion behind the eye and that heavy rain and high winds could remain in the Charleston area until midday Friday.

Power outages had begun about 9 p.m., well after most of the people in this city of more than 75,000 had been evacuated.


U.S. military authorities began moving hundreds of aircraft and a score of ships from bases in Hugo's path, Defense Department officials said.

Damn, I love that song. I remember very well when it was released. It was 1989, I had about six months left in the navy. I spent those last six months deployed to the Mediterranean, departing the U.S. shortly after Hurricane Hugo. I listened to that Full Moon Fever cassette over and over, almost constantly.

THIS PLANT--using the power of the atom to supply electrical power--represents what can be done, not only in America, but throughout the world, to put the atom to work for the good of mankind, not his destruction.

It represents the hope of our people that the power of the atom will be able to open up a vast new world of peaceful development--that atomic power will ease mankind's burdens and provide additional comforts for human living.

The United States is confident that this can be accomplished. Already sixty-five other nations have joined the International Atomic Energy Agency, which I proposed to the United Nations in 1953, to promote the peaceful uses of the atom and to reduce the threat of nuclear armaments. Thirty--nine nations have joined with us in bilateral agreements to share in peaceful atomic development.

This plant has a secure place in American history. It is the first of the world's large-scale nuclear power stations exclusively devoted to peaceful purposes.

It is with pride in what has been accomplished at Shippingport, Pennsylvania--and with equal confidence in the future--that I now dedicate this Shippingport Atomic Power Station to the cause of scientific progress--to the cause of peace.

Note: These remarks were part of a program broadcast over radio and television from 1:00 to 1:30 p.m. The President spoke at the White House, where he set in motion the power station's turbine-generator by using a neutron wand and a neutron counter to operate a series of remote control relays.

The Shippingport plant is a joint venture of the Atomic Energy Commission and the Duquesne Light Company of Pittsburgh.

THE FATE OF FRANCIS GARY POWERS


Downed U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers underwent extensive interrogation at the hands of the Soviets. His instructions from the CIA on what to do in event of capture were meager, and he had been told that he might as well tell the Soviets whatever they wanted to know because they could get the information from his aircraft anyway Nevertheless, Powers tried to conceal as much classified information as possible while giving the appearance of cooperating with his captors. To extract the maximum propaganda value from the U-2 Affair, the Soviets prepared an elaborate show trial for Powers, which began on 17 August 1960 Powers continued to conceal as much information as possible
