History

Original text

Sinking

On April 18, 1942, the Nitto Maru was deployed to patrol 668 nautical miles of the Japanese coast, a few miles away was the Nagato Maru , another vessel of similar characteristics. A little further and beyond the horizon sailing the Awata Maru , a Japanese ship liner and auxiliary Iwata Maru . 2 3

At about 7:30, the lookouts of Nitto Maru detected an enemy force heading at full speed to Japan and transmitted the alert message to the base ship, the Nitto Maru had run into American ships

SHEPPARD: No, sir -- what I mean is, even if we beat them this time, they're gonna come back.

(Everett sighs, then looks at John.)

EVERETT: Major, I think I should tell you that Colonel Marshall Sumner was a very good friend of mine. We served together a lot of years. You know, I cannot for the life of me figure how it is that you could go as far as you did and not save him -- how you could get that close ...

A Sailor's History of the U.S. Navy

By Thomas Cutler

With the roar of the missile still echoing in CIC, rapid but disciplined orders and reports filled the air: "Whiskey, this is Alfa Whiskey. Red and free!"

"Fire SWC!"

"Birds affirm."

"Birds away on hostile track 1077."

Again, the bulkheads rattled as several surface-to-surface missiles left Wainwright's rails in retaliation. The other ships in SAG Charlie - frigates Simpson and Bagley - opened fire as well.

planefinder

Radar Separation in Air Traffic

Aircraft that fly under the supervision of Air Traffic Control fly in what is called controlled airspace. These are predefined areas of airspace in which no aircraft can fly unless properly equipped and the pilot suitably qualified. Within these areas, aircraft can get within very close proximity and to control that proximity air traffic controllers use a set of procedures and regulations to keep aircraft separated safely at all times and communicate with them through radio.

Radar

Radar Types

Regarding the optimal height for shipboard radars - the most recent thinking is: low down [16m] S-band Volume Search Radar (VSR; SPY-2) and high up [25m] X-band Multi-Function radar (MFR; SPY-3). This would provide the optimal coverage for ballistic missile targets (SPY-2) and antiship missile targets (SPY-3). Low down favors S-band propagation - that's why you have the S-band jammers in WWII and the PLA Navy ships nearer deck level. Mounting the SPS-48E high up in the NTU ships was an attempt to increase the radar horizon to compensate for a lower data rate than SPY-1. With SPY-1, you'd want to get as much performance out of favorable transmission for optimal long range detection and tracking. Its high data rate compensates for the shorter radar horizon. In other words, the 16m high SPY-1 would first be able to "see" the sea skimmer target at a shorter distance than the SPS-48E high up. But, the faster scan rate enables the SPY-1 to detect and track the target more rapidly and still provide sufficent warning time to engage the target. With a lower data rate, the SPS-48E high up trades off long range performce for high angle targets to have a better chance of detecting the high threat sea skimmer. At the time of its introduction, the processing of SPS-48E actually made it superior to SPY-1A in detection of low angle targets.

DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

AN/SPS-48G

Description

The AN/SPS-48G is a long-range, three-dimensional (3D) Air Search Radar that will be installed on CVN, LHA, LHD, and LPD 17 class ships. The AN/SPS-48G is used to find full volumetric detection data for Ships Self Defense System and the Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC), and SYS-2 tracker; Air Intercept Control, Anti-Ship Cruise Missile detection including Low Elevation and High Diver targets, backup aircraft marshalling, and the new Hazardous Weather Detection and Display Capability.

Long-term obsolescence, Reliability, Maintainability, and Availability (RM&A) issues have reduced the AN/SPS-48E Radar's effectiveness in the Fleet and increased system and lifecycle support costs. The AN/SPS-48G program responds to these issues through a system redesign that improves the radar's reliability, maintainability, and supportability through technology improvements, Open Architecture (OA) design, and improved logistics processes to accommodate future obsolescence avoidance while reducing lifecycle cost.

Fire-control radar

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A fire-control radar (FCR) is a radar that is designed specifically to provide information (mainly target azimuth, elevation, range and range rate) to a fire-control system in order to calculate a firing solution (i.e., information on how to direct weapons such that they hit the target(s)). A typical radar emits a narrow, intense beam of radio waves to ensure accurate tracking information and to minimize the chance of losing track of the target. Some modern radars have a track-while-scan capability, enabling them to function simultaneously as both fire-control radar and search radar.
