Doctor Zefram COCHRANE: That's Zefram Cochrane. That's his vision. This other guy you keep talking about. This historical figure. I never met him. I can't imagine I ever will.
RIKER: Someone once said 'Don't try to be a great man. Just be a man, and let history make it's own judgements'.
Doctor Zefram COCHRANE: Rhetorical nonsense. Who said that?
RIKER: You did, ten years from now.

When the VA dropped me off at the Theodora after I was discharged from the hospital, I sit down in the common area and picked up a National Geographic magazine. The first one I picked up was to read an article about the space shuttle Columbia’s first flight in 1981 on STS-1

So that’s why I bought that particular bicycle seat for my Schwinn back sometime around the year 2000. Lynn pointed out a couple with a laugh that I didn’t understand that the seat was the phrase “Buzz Off” labeled on it. It is because I was Buzz Aldrin. I was thinking the other day that the person we know as Buzz Aldrin wasn’t actually on Apollo 11 and that it was just me and Armstrong on the surface. I have thoughts that Armstrong wasn’t even there but I’m not sure about that. I think he probably was there. The reason I have been wondering about that is there is a photo from the surface of Luna that supposedly shows Armstrong and Aldrin standing next to the flag, but they look to be about the same size. If Armstrong was standing next to a 10 year old, it would be noticeable. But I think that is a fake photo. It is a composite of two images that are both of me or that are both of him.
There were 600 million spectators in 1969 watching the Apollo 11 landing, according to sources. That is only the tip of the iceburg of the kind of audience an equivalent event would have today. The media options were very primitive back in 1969 compared to today. The tip of the iceberg. I can’t even begin to articulate it right now but it does explain why Bill Gates has been stealing from me and the reason I am still here which means he has powerful protectors to support his grand larceny.

I write sometimes about something I "hear" but an adequate expression if that notion is that it is simply something I "sense." Hearing is a sense, thus my mind senses something that is the equivalent of hearing something. I feel that I understand the difference as in the case of certain mental illness, the patient claims to actually hear voices in their head, which means to me they hear something as though someone is standing next to them and speaks the words they hear but since no one is standing near to them that they can visually attach to the words they "hear" then it must have been something they hear in their head. My sense is simply the thoughts I hear. I thought about it again when I found a medication bottle from when I was being treated at the V.A. and the description on the bottle as for the reason for the medication was that it was for "obsessive thoughts." There is a certain humor to that now as I think about it again. So anyway, a few minutes ago, it seemed that I "sensed" someone that was frustrated and I guess was complaining something about how they would know or could know "what sets me off." That sense was only a few minutes ago but I have already lost in my mind a certain sense of confidence about what it was I sensed, although the general notion I have written is exact or very close to be exactly what I sensed. What I cannot now recall if it was regarding me or if it was regarding someone else. Maybe it doesn't matter. My first reaction was to think about something I remember from the first season of "Heroes" television series although I don't think I started watching that series until the last few episodes of last season. The part I reference here is something I guess I saw on a preview of a episode but I never actually watched any of those episodes. I think that "Hiro" was referring to this in that season preview episode where he says that he cannot go back and avoid acquiring his super-power because then the explosion would have happened as a result. As I was briefly reading over this, I think this was the basis for the first season of the "Heroes" television series and this episode was the final episode. This also makes me think again of that Homeless Court in Seattle, but then, that was scheduled over a year before the series premiered and was actually about the time I became homeless and then was being treated at the V.A. which includes seeing Patty Murray outside the hospital the day I was released to the senior citizens home at Theodora where I was still very confused.

When I was asleep earlier today, I had that dream again about that house in Country Club Estates. The difference in this dream though was that I never actually saw the house, it was just the location that seemed familiar. And there was a lot of activity going on around me lot. I had several tasks to complete and one of those was to use a shovel to level an area of ground that someone was complaining about. Later I was pushing a wheelbarrow with the dirt down a slope of a hill to dump at the edge of my property. A small stream had formed from water that was running down hill from the house next to my property. I dumped the dirt into the stream and it seemed to block the stream. Then I had to move some sections of a tree that had been cut down with a chainsaw. I could see several houses from my property and there was construction at everyone of them I can remember seeing. At least two of the houses had their exteriors ripped and were being replaced. I can remember seeing one other lot where a concrete foundation had been poured for a new house.

Women's History Month: ENIAC, first computer programmers
By Egon Hatfield, RDECOM History Office March 18, 2013
ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. -- Anyone interested in the history of computing knows of the U.S. Army's ground-breaking Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer. ENIAC was the world's first operational, general purpose, electronic digital computer.
The computer consisted of 70,000 resistors, 10,000 capacitors, 1,500 relays, 6,000 manual switches and 5 million soldered joints. Eight feet high, it covered 1800 square feet (167 square meters) of floor space, weighed 30 tons and consumed 160 kilowatts per hour of electrical power.
Initially utilized to support the Manhattan Project near the end of World War II, it was demonstrated to the public on Feb. 15, 1946 and evolved during the next few years to become the first operating, stored-program computer.
ENIAC was operated first at the Moore School of Electrical Engineering of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. In late 1946 to early 1947, it was dismantled and moved to the Ballistics Research Laboratory at Aberdeen Proving Ground, becoming operational there on July 29, 1947.
The world of early computer design and construction was a male-dominated work domain; however, manpower demands of WWII enabled women with mathematical degrees or an ability in different types of mathematics to operate the equipment, receiving the title of "computers."
Women were soon regarded as capable of "computing" more quickly and more accurately than men.
Once the ENIAC was ready to perform as a stored-program computer, the need arose for another type of computer specialist, the programmer. Six women, from a pool of nearly 100 women employed by the BRL, were hired in June 1945 as the first programmers.

(He smiles politely at the group as Eli looks startled.)
RUSH: Excuse me.
(He walks away as Eli calls after him, his voice high-pitched in indignation.)
WALLACE: You are not seriously putting this on me!
(He looks at Colonel Telford, who stares back at him with his arms folded and his face stern. Eli turns to the Senator.)
WALLACE: Not my fault.
FLASHBACK. At Icarus base, Rush has filled a whiteboard with mathematical equations and is gazing at the board intently.
RUSH: There has to be a mistake in here somewhere.
(Eli is sitting nearby and watching him incredulously.)
WALLACE: Seriously, who uses a whiteboard any more? You have computers, like, everywhere around here!
RUSH (still concentrating on the board): Power flow was in the target range. Why wouldn't the address connect?
WALLACE: Wrong address?
RUSH: There is only one found in the Ancient database on Atlantis.
WALLACE: With no other instructions?
RUSH: No, but that's not the issue. It has to be your proof.
WALLACE: My proof works. You know how I know that it does? Because you said so.

Senator Richard Nixon’s Checkers Speech
Sep 23, 1952
In his 1952 Checkers speech, Richard Nixon was one of the first politicians to use the medium of television to defend himself against accusations of wrong-doing.
This speech came during the 1952 presidential election campaign. Senator Nixon was Dwight D. Eisenhower’s vice-presidential running mate. Accused of accepting illegal gifts, Nixon used his television appearance to deny the allegations and outline his personal financial circumstances.
Nixon referred to a cocker spaniel dog his family had been given. Black and white spotted, they called it Checkers. “And you know, the kids, like all kids, love the dog and I just want to say this right now, that regardless of what they say about it, we’re gonna keep it.”
The address thereafter became known as the Checkers speech.

Shuttle Lands With 3 Who Hitched Ride : Spaceflight: American and two Russians who were aboard space station for 3 1/2 months arrive in Florida. Atlantis delivered fresh crew mates to Mir.
July 08, 1995 From Times Wire Services
KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. — The space shuttle Atlantis glided to a landing Friday after the first East-West linkup in orbit in 20 years, bringing home an American and two Russians who spent an often dreary 3 1/2 months aboard the Mir space station.
The shuttle, with commander Robert L. (Hoot) Gibson at the controls, touched down at 7:54 a.m. PDT at the Kennedy Space Center, from where it was launched June 27.
"Welcome home, Atlantis . . . congratulations on a perfect end to your historic mission. A new era in human spaceflight has begun," shuttle communicator Curt Brown radioed the crew from Mission Control in Houston.
"We couldn't have said it better. We're proud to have been a part of it," Gibson radioed back from the cockpit.
During the 10-day shuttle mission, Atlantis docked with Mir 245 miles above Earth in a feat of precision flying executed at 17,500 m.p.h. Atlantis delivered a fresh Russian crew to Mir and gave astronaut Norman E. Thagard and his two Russian crew mates a ride back home.
President Clinton called the astronauts and cosmonauts before they left Atlantis to congratulate them on their docking mission with the Russian space station. He offered special praise for Thagard, saying "we're all very proud."
"The Russians took good care of me," Thagard told the President. "We're great friends so I think if what we did on a personal level is any indication, there won't be any problem with this on an intergovernmental level as well."
Clinton replied: "The next time we have any problem between American and Russian officials I'm going to send them into space. I think I now know how to solve all international problems."

Space Station ER
What happens if an astronaut in space needs surgery?
By Tim Wright
AIR & SPACE MAGAZINE
SEPTEMBER 2015
Aboard an ancient Boeing KC-135 nicknamed the “Vomit Comet,” a medical research team goes to work as the NASA aircraft flies a parabolic curve, entering a 25-second period of zero gravity. To avoid floating away, surgeon Mark R. Campbell wedges his feet beneath a bar at the base of a prototype surgical table. Atop the table lies an anesthetized and rigidly restrained rabbit, Campbell’s research subject. This test is the culmination of six months of planning.
Campbell ignores the sensation of weightlessness as he takes a scalpel and carefully opens the rabbit’s carotid artery, then pulls back to watch. Initially, Campbell sees exactly what he expects. In zero gravity, bright red globes of blood streak out of the wound like paint balls fired from a gun. But within seconds, the steady flow of globes diminishes and then stops while a dome of blood grows over the incision. Dismayed, Campbell makes his carotid incision larger to increase blood flow but the results are unchanged, and a cut into a major artery in the rabbit’s abdomen has the same result. “Finally we just figured out that that’s the way blood acts in weightlessness,” he says. “It didn’t act the way we thought it would.”
In five decades of human spaceflight and 15 years of continuous occupation of the International Space Station, no human has ever undergone a surgical procedure in orbit. Given the intent of national space agencies, private companies, and even some individuals to launch long-range space missions, it seems inevitable that at some point someone will have a bad day, and surgery will be needed to save a life. When that day comes, the patient may want to send Campbell a thank-you note.
Campbell’s 1991 rabbit experiment took place during the buildup for Space Station Freedom, which was to have been a gigantic outpost, with a 1,200-pound, X-ray–equipped module that could address almost any medical emergency. The well-stocked space ER was a necessity because of the space shuttle’s expected launch schedule—once every 45 days. Though a patient on the ground could be brought to a hospital within minutes, in space it was conceivable that for 45 days, an incapacitated or badly hurt astronaut would have to suffer without support from Earthbound doctors and equipment. “That was a really long time,” says Campbell.
A retired NASA flight surgeon, Campbell is a member of the FAA’s Commercial Space Transportation Advisory Committee and a practicing general surgeon in Paris, Texas. Because no one was sure if surgery in zero gravity was possible, his experiment on bleeding behavior was an early step in a new world. By the time the parabolic flights concluded, in 2000, Campbell had attempted procedures ranging from simple sutures and CPR to laparoscopy while floating in brief periods of zero gravity. By that time NASA faced the reality of far fewer shuttle launches with much more time between, and Freedom morphed into the smaller International Space Station, and most of the planned medical capabilities were shelved.
Aboard the International Space Station, the care available to the permanent crew of six is minimal. There are ventilation devices to assist breathing, a defibrillator for heart problems, a folding patient restraint table that doubles as a transport device. An ultrasound-imaging device, meant for scientific research, could in a pinch be used for diagnostics. The medical kit can handle relatively minor ailments but simply cannot cope with disaster. No matter the equipment, the crew may be unable to handle the situation. Even qualified doctors that fly may be too out of practice to perform.

Phoebe and her family knew me very well, going back to the 1970's, but they did not know all these fantastic details I am writing about now.
Her father, I think, knew it all or the most important details.
Her mothher, I think, did not know the important details, such as my astronaut or military experience starting in the 1960's.
Or maybe she did know and I am thinking of someone else.
I have pondered several times over some kind of vague memory, I guess it is, of Phoebe's mother wondering why I was giving her stuff that was associated with the Moon.

This plot element, as well as the scene where he somehow seems to stop time, reminds me of thoughts I have had over the years. As with the notion that Mars was in the future, until I began to understand that the planet Mars was in the past for me, I was imagine-thinking that I was going to go on a long trip to explore the galaxy. I had thoughts of the vehicle I would use for such a journey but of course, that was all just imagination. I found it was a pleasant line of thought but then when I became consciously aware of Phoebe again, I could not imagine going on some kind of long journey like that and I did not want to take her out into the unknown with me, which meant I was going to choose to stay here, where ever that was, as it is where ever Phoebe is.
