I thought a lot about this photo of the USS Taylor FFG-50 after I saw it. Especially because of the perspective of the photographer compared to my own artificial and symbolic memories.

I was staying at a hotel named Crosslands at the time.

040309-N-4374S-008 At sea aboard USS Taylor (FFG 50) Mar. 9, 2004 - The Oliver Hazard Perry-class ship USS Taylor (FFG 50) conducts a replenishment at sea (RAS) with the fast combat support ship USS Seattle (AOE 3). The guided missile frigate Taylor is part of the USS John F. Kennedy Strike Group and is currently taking part in a Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMTUEX). COMPTUEX is an intermediate level exercise designed to forge the strike group into a cohesive fighting team and is a critical step in pre-deployment training. During COMPTUEX, more than a dozen ships, and Carrier Air Wing Seventeen (CVW-17) embarked on Kennedy, conducted war game exercises using training ranges along the East Coast of the U.S. and the Gulf of Mexico. The exercise took advantage of existing ranges under the Navy’s comprehensive Training Resource Strategy (TRS). These ranges offer training facilities and realistic simulations, better preparing U.S. Navy ships and Sailors to participate in the Global War on Terrorism. Television series Season 1 episode 4 - 16 March 1980

00 hours 05 minutes 08 seconds

Captain Troy: Study period is over. At least for the instructor.

Lieutenant Dillion: What's the sudden hurry?

Captain Troy: Something's happened. We've come to a complete stop.

Commander Adama: Yes, what is it, Colonel?

Colonel Boomer: We allowed the freighter Delphi to slow for repairs on her main engines, sir.

Commander Adama: I'm aware of that. Hasn't she regained her place in the fleet?

Colonel Boomer: Sir, they've come to all stop.

Commander Adama: Colonel, do you realize the significance of that freighter?

Colonel Boomer: Our schooling ship, sir. All our children are on board.

Commander Adama: Send a fighter escort at once.

Battlestar Galactica (ALARM SOUNDING)

Lieutenant Dillion: If this old tub sits still for long, the shuttles won't have the range to return the children home to the fleet.

Captain Troy: Then we'll crash load the children and abandon ship.

Space freighter Delphi (ALARM SOUNDING)

Captain Troy: Attack klaxon!

Lieutenant Dillion: It must be a mistake. The Cylons haven't attacked in a generation.

Lieutenant Dillion: That was no mistake.

Captain Troy: Get the children to shuttles.

Space freighter crewman: The pilots want to abandon ship before their shuttles are trapped inside.

Captain Troy: Not until everyone has a full load.

Space freighter crewman: But half the compartments are already sealed off.

Lieutenant Dillion: We'll unseal them. Just load these children and wait for more.

Space freighter crewman: Yes, sir.

Colonel Boomer: Attack leader to Galactica. Delphi under attack.

[ Children coughing from fire smoke ]

Captain Troy: Come on, all of you. We're getting out of here.

Colonel Boomer: Viper command to Shuttle Alpha, do you read?

Captain Troy: We read you, Boomer. We've suffered some damage. What is the disposition of the fleet?

Colonel Boomer: The fleet's coordinates are radius vector 33 degrees left off the elliptical plane. Elevation, 40 degrees north, at 33000 Mega-K's from Alpha Centauri.

Lieutenant Dillion: Computron coordinates makes the fuel requirement to reach the fleet -

Pilot's visual display screen: NEGATIVE

Captain Troy: Recompute to see if we can drift back on a slow curve, using minimum power boosts at intervals to make course changes.

Lieutenant Dillion: No good. We can't catch up.

Captain Troy: Then we'll have to move off course and hide. They can send somebody back after they lose the Cylons.

Lieutenant Dillion: What if a Cylon Patrol finds us first?

Captain Troy: Colonel Boomer.

Colonel Boomer: Acknowledge

Captain Troy: We can't make it back to the fleet.

Colonel Boomer: Captain, you have to try. You have no other choices.

Captain Troy: Yes, I do. The choice these children have been trained for. We'll see you, Colonel.
