Television series Season 1 Episode 10 - 04 May 1980
Dr. Zee: Adama, I had a dream.
Commander Adama: You wish to tell me about it?
Dr. Zee: Do you believe dreams are significant?
Commander Adama: Yes, I do. Not all of them, but some.
Dr. Zee: In my dream, I was not born aboard the Galactica, nor any of the other ships in the fleet. Is that true?
Commander Adama: Yes. That is true.
Dr. Zee: Then who am I? Where do I come from?
Commander Adama: Tell me about your dream.
Dr. Zee: It was not a dream about me. It was a dream about a great warrior.

Television series Season 1 Episode 10 - 04 May 1980
00 hours 08 minutes 44 seconds
Starbuck: (narrating) There was nothing left but my escape pod, which fired automatically moments before my ship impacted. That had saved my life. But to what end? I set my automatic beacon to transmit a continuous signal to those rescuers I knew would never come. Now it was time to set out and explore the planet. Who knows, I might discover an oasis, a citadel of civilization, thousands of primitive people who would worship me as some kind of winged God who'd dropped in on them out of the heavens

I woke up during the night clenching a knife again and the tip of my left elbow still hurts. I was thinking that I stubbed my left elbow on the upright strut of the backrest of the chair I put in front of the door during the night but after I got out of bed, I noted that I did not put the chair in front of the door so I must have dreamed that. I don't know what I hit my elbow on.

Whoa. Where you goin' ?
I'm goin' in the black op.
You can't come. You're too little. Why don't you stay back here and guard the base, okay ?
What's the matter with you, boy ?
They won't let me go on no black op. Th-They say I'm too little. No one ever lets you do anything when you're too little.
Aw, phooey ! What about all those stories about the little people that do big things ? Like Little Red Riding Hood ? Them three little pigs ? Spike Lee ? Or them Little Rascals ? You ever hear the story about The Little Engine That Could ? Let me tell you that story. Once upon a time, deep, deep in the jungle, there was a little engine that could. He was chuggin' his way across the enemy line. Chugga, chugga, chugga. Chugga, chugga. Toot, toot ! This little engine's mission... was to take some AK-47s and a nuclear payload... over the mountain to the 2063 Battalion. Needless to say, there was plenty opposition. You think that stopped the little engine that could ? No, siree, Bob. He just kept chuggin' along. Chugga, chugga, chugga. Chugga, chugga. Toot, toot ! Not even when they climbed aboard the train and popped out the eyes of the conductor, and blood and snot was drippin' out his eye sockets. You think that stopped the little engine that could ? Damn skippy. He just kept chuggin' along. Chugga, chugga, chugga. Chugga, chugga. Toot, toot ! It wasn't until... Charlie rigged a bridge with plastic explosives... just as the little engine was makin' his way across the trestle. Boom ! An explosion happened. And blood and guts and spit and ass was everywhere ! And Bubba come crawlin' out the back door, both legs missin'. Lula May's baby boy ! He look up at me. He said, "Payne ! I can't feel my legs." I said, "Bubba, they ain't there." And I looked down, and them little bloody nubs was kickin' real fast, like this here. And I said, "Bubba, it's 'Less you can flip upside down and walk on your hands, you ain't gonna make it." All of a sudden, Charlie was all over the place ! It was just me and my sidearm. And I had no other alternative... but to blast my way out. "Die, pig ! Die ! You'll never take Major Benson Winifred Payne alive !" Bam ! "I saw what you did to my friend !" Bam !
Major ! Major ! Major !
Bam ! Bam ! Bam ! Hello, Miss Walburn. You just missed a little bedtime story.
No. I didn't, actually.

The Hard Drive Turns 50
By Melissa J. Perenson
PCWorld SEP 13, 2006
Today, the hard drive is found everywhere--from the PCs we use daily to MP3 players and memory keys so small you can toss them in your pocket and forget you're carrying around a hard drive. But when the hard drive was first introduced on September 13, 1956, it required a humongous housing and 50 24-inch platters to store 1/2400 as much data as can be fit on today's largest capacity 1-inch hard drives

Brave New Hard Drives
File that, would you? There was a time when your only choice was to stuff a piece of paper in a drawer somewhere (and hope that later, you'd remember where).
Today, we take digital storage for granted but the fact is, the possibilities for storing all sorts of files – words, numbers, images, music, video, and more – have been growing by leaps and bounds for the past fifty years, as computers themselves shrunk from forests of machines filling huge rooms to thin pieces of plastic apt to slide off the laps of careless users.
When PCs first came out, there were no affordable hard drives. Even when the IBM PC was introduced in 1981, it had only a 160 kilobyte floppy drive. The first mass market PC with a built-in hard drive was the IBM XT, which came out in 1983, with a whopping 10 megabytes of storage.
The original 160 KB floppy could store about 164,000 bytes or characters – enough for about 137 pages of double spaced text. Forget about graphics, music or video. That 10 megabyte drive back in 1983 could store about 8,800 pages of text.
The comparison to today's PCs, most of which are likely to have an at least 40 gigabyte hard drive, is dramatic. High end PCs tend to have 500 GB hard drives, which can store nearly 550 million double spaced pages or more than 128,000 songs or high resolution digital photos.
And Seagate makes a PC hard drive that stores 750 GB.
While it took until the 1980s for hard drives to migrate down to PCs, they were actually invented back in the 1950s. The first hard drive used in a commercial computer was unveiled by IBM 50 years ago this week on September 13, 1956.
That first drive assembly, called the "IBM 350 disc storage unit" was part of the IBM 305 RAMAC computer, according to Craig Butler, IBM's manager of disc storage products.
The device, according to Butler, made it possible for businesses to access data on a random basis without having to predefine the order of access - similar to the way you would locate a song on a cassette tape.
The storage process was called "continuous accounting" because it allowed users – that is, businesses who could afford it - to process data right after it was loaded into the computer.
The device, which stored five million characters (a bit short of 5 megabytes), cost $35,000 in 1956 dollars and stood 5 feet tall, a little less than 6 feet wide and 2.5 feet deep.
Storage capacity for drives is measured in areal density – the number of bits per square inch of storage surface. The areal density of today's drives, according to Butler, is 64 million times higher than it was back in 1956: an increase of 46 percent per year. Butler expects drive capacity to continue to grow rapidly for the next couple of years but eventually slow down.
Still, consumers can expect to see significant improvements in capacity over the next few years. A relatively new breakthrough is technology that increases areal density by aligning bits of data vertically or perpendicularly, instead of horizontally.
Prior to this innovation, bits were stored on flat sections of the platter. Storing them vertically is a little like erecting a high-rise building, enabling engineers to pack more per inch into the total amount of disc real estate.

ILIA PROBE: This device serves no purpose. ...Why does Enterprise require the presence of carbon units?
DECKER: Enterprise would be unable to function without carbon units.
ILIA PROBE: More data concerning this functioning is necessary before carbon units can be patterned for data storage.
DECKER: What does that mean?
ILIA PROBE: When my examination is complete, all carbon units will be reduced to data patterns.

Jimmy Carter
XXXIX President of the United States: 1977 - 1981
Department of Health and Human Services Remarks at Inauguration Ceremonies for the Department.
May 14, 1980
It's a beautiful seal. It's a seal that epitomizes, in my opinion, what the life of Pat Harris means to me as President and to our country and to this Department. The wings of an eagle: aggressive, confident, proud, sheltering those who are young, the aged, the disadvantaged, and the poor. It's an inseparable commitment, one that gives us all a justifiable sense of pride.
On the way over here from the White House, Louis Martin 1 was pointing out to me that Pat Harris and you administer the third largest budget in the world. The entire United States budget is the largest; the budget of the Soviet Union is second; and the budget of your new department is the third. And as I met Pat in the reception room just adjacent to this room, she pointed out how impressed foreign leaders are when she tells them and audiences in foreign countries that more than one-third of the total budget of the United States of America goes for human services, to improve the life of the families who are dependent on this new department.
1 Special Assistant to the President.
To those of you who are the fellow workers of Pat and me in this new department, I want to say that I'm grateful for this day. Today is one of celebration. It's a day of rededication as we inaugurate the new Department of Health and Human Services.
The reorganization of the former Department of Health, Education, and Welfare brings a new focus and also will bring new energies to our struggle against poverty, disease, and inequality. It's a time to renew our drive toward goals which are conceived in the heart and the conscience of our country. Today is a time for reflection, to recall the many accomplishments that we've shared in the past, and to remember that our struggle will constantly challenge our imagination and our commitment.
Forty months ago I came into office representing a commitment by the American people of both compassion and competence, With the belief that these two are inseparable if government is to serve people effectively.

US Marine Corps 1LT Paul Wang: [displays evidence proving the guilt of the accused]
Elroy-El: And that is?
US Marine Corps 1LT Paul Wang: It was on your person. On your clothes we found remnants of the oil used as accelerant on the missiles in the fire. And when that failed, you stole this radio-controlled device and turned it into a detonator, using electronics from your own body.
Elroy-El: Clearly, gentlemen, a frame-up job is in progress.
US Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel T.C. McQueen: You see, we biological life-forms got what you call your, uh, eye for an eye.
Elroy-El: Yes. Yes, I've read about that.
US Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel T.C. McQueen: It states that an act, say of terrorism or murder is met with an equal act.
Elroy-El: I have the uneasy feeling that you gentlemen are unfamiliar with the Ho Chi Minh City Convention of 2054. Under declarations relating to Artificial Intelligence, Prisoners of War, article two, paragraph four states -
US Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel T.C. McQueen: Nothing that means a damn in this room.
Elroy-El: Oh.
US Marine Corps 1LT Paul Wang: You didn't seem to care about the H.C.M.C. Convention when you tortured me at the Kazbek Penal Colony.
Elroy-El: Why do you malign me so? [Gasps] Oh, I see. Of course. Oh, gentlemen, this has been one huge mistake. You see, that wasn't me. That was an entirely different Elroy-El model. Yes, that boy Elroy did some very bad things.

House Un-American Activities Committee Testimony
Ronald Reagan
October 23, 1947
Reagan was president of the Screen Actors Guild at this time. His interest and involvement in politics was really only beginning. He was, however, a committed anti-Communist, and here cooperated with HUAC in commenting on the alleged activities of communists in Hollywood and the Screen Actors Guild.
CHAIRMAN J. PARNELL THOMAS: The record will show that Mr. McDowell, Mr. Vail, Mr. Nixon, and Mr. Thomas are present. A subcommittee is sitting. Staff members present: Mr. Robert E. Stripling, chief investigator; Messrs. Louis J. Russell, H.A. Smith, and Robert B. Gaston, investigators; and Mr. Benjamin Mandel, director of research.
STRIPLING: When and where were you born, Mr. Reagan?
RONALD REAGAN: Tampico, Illinois, February 6, 1911.
STRIPLING: What is your present occupation?
REAGAN: Motion picture actor.
STRIPLING: How long have you been engaged in that profession?
REAGAN: Since June 1937, with a brief interlude of 3 1/2 years -- that at the time didn't seem very brief.
STRIPLING: What period was that?
REAGAN: That was during the late war.
STRIPLING: What branch of service were you in?
REAGAN: Well, sir, I had been for several years in the Reserve as an officer in the United States Cavalry, but I was assigned to the Air Corps.
STRIPLING: That is kind of typical of the Army, isn't it?
REAGAN: Yes, sir. The first thing the Air Corps did was loan me to the Signal Corps.
MCDOWELL: You didn't wear spurs?
REAGAN: I did for a little while.
CHAIRMAN: I think this has little to do with the facts we are seeking. Proceed.

The American Presidency Project
Richard Nixon
XXXVII President of the United States: 1969 - 1974
267 - Telegram to the Apollo 11 Astronauts on the Eve of the Launch.
July 15, 1969
ON the eve of your epic mission, I want you to know that my hopes and my prayers-and those of all Americans--go with you. Years of study and planning and experiment and hard work on the part of thousands have led to this unique moment in the story of mankind; it is now your moment and from the depths of your minds and hearts and spirits will come the triumph all men will share. I look forward to greeting you on your return. Until then, know that all that is best in the spirit of mankind will be with you during your mission and when you return to earth.
Note: The President also telephoned the crew members, Neil A. Armstrong, Col. Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr., and Lt. Col. Michael Collins, at 6 p.m. on the evening preceding the launch. In describing the conversation, Press Secretary Ronald L. Ziegler reported that the President told the astronauts, "... as you lift off to the moon, you lift the spirits of the American people as well as the world." He also quoted the President as saying, "You carry with you a feeling of good will in this greatest adventure man has ever taken," and "I am particularly impressed by the fact that all three of you have the attitude of quiet and serene confidence, confidence that comes from superb training, preparation, and the inner strength of character which is characteristic and a common attitude of all our astronauts."

Captain's log, stardate 41153.7. Our destination is planet Deneb Four, beyond which lies the great unexplored mass of the galaxy. My orders are to examine Farpoint, a starbase built there by the inhabitants of that world. Meanwhile, I am becoming better acquainted with my new command, this Galaxy Class USS Enterprise. I am still somewhat in awe of its size and complexity. As for my crew, we are short in several key positions, most notably a first officer, but I am informed that a highly experienced man, one Commander William Riker, will be waiting to join our ship at our Deneb Four destination.

Stargate SG-1 - Children of the Gods - television series premiere Season 1 Episode 1 - Sunday 27 July 1997
Episode Summary
The System Lord Apophis launches an attack through the Stargate, tucked away by the military after the events of the movie, and the SGC program is reactivated and given a new objective - seek out and find the alien invaders and defeat them. Jack O'Neill is called out of retirement and sent to locate Daniel Jackson on Abydos.
(from internet transcript of incomplete dialog)
Apophis' dungeon, at the back of the chamber. O'Neill hoists himself up to a tiny window, peering out. There's no glass to shatter, but he's blocked by a metal lattice. He drops back down to the floor, where Skaara is standing, looking out in case any guards notice. Daniel and Carter watch from a distance.
CARTER: So Ra isn't dead after all.
JACKSON: It wasn't Ra. It was Apophis.
CARTER: Who?
JACKSON: Um... it's from Egyptian mythology. Ra was the sun god who ruled the day, Apophis was the serpent god, Ra's rival, who ruled the night. It's right out of the Book of the Dead. They're living it.
O'Neill and Skaara continue along the back wall. O'Neill is still trying to scout out a weak point in the wall or a window that will budge.
SKAARA: We will save Sha're?
O'NEILL: (still checking wall) I can't promise you anything at the moment.
SKAARA: (grabs his shoulder, stops him) But you're a great warrior! We defeated Ra together!
O'NEILL: Yeah, yeah, I know, but take a look around here. Look at what we're up against.
At the defiant look Skaara gives him, O'Neill pats him on the shoulder.
O'NEILL: We'll try.
The dungeon doors are opening again. Seeing that something's about to happen, O'Neill takes Skaara aside towards the center of the room. The crowd is gathering at the foot of the steps, apprehensively trying to see what's going on. The Serpent Guards file in, forming two lines on each side of the doorway along the walls. Teal'c enters, standing in the center of the threshold, his helmet gone. The lines of Jaffa flanking him step forward, so that they are all lined up at the head of the stairs.
TEAL'C: Sha'ka ha! Kree hol mel, Goa'uld!
O'NEILL: What did he say?
SKAARA: (quietly, dreading this) They are going to choose.
CARTER: Choose what?
SKAARA: Who will be the children of the gods.

Angela: We all judge ourselves, Starbuck.
Starbuck: Well, I hope so, because I plan on being very easy on myself in certain categories. Now, look, if I run into trouble, just push that button. The ship is programmed to head towards the fleet's secret heading. No matter how far she deviates to avoid Cylons, she'll always return to that heading sooner or later. The ship will also automatically lower your body temperatures to sustain life for a maximum period of time.

OPENING CREDITS
Night. A car pulls up in front of Jack O'Neill's house and Major Samuels climbs out. He walks up to the front porch and knocks on the door. No one answers, and the camera pans up to the roof.
DRIVER: Sir. There's a ladder over here.
The view pans up to show O'Neill on the roof, looking at the night sky through a telescope. A laptop rests on a small table beside him. Samuels climbs up the ladder to join O'Neill.
SAMUELS: Colonel Jack O'Neill?
O'NEILL: (not looking up) Retired.
SAMUELS: I'm Major Samuels.
O'NEILL: Air Force?
SAMUELS: Yes, sir. I'm the General's executive officer.
O'NEILL: A little piece of advice, Major? Get re-assed to NASA. That's where all the action's gonna be. (Brief shot of O'Neill's POV, at the cluster of stars in the scope.) Out there.
SAMUELS: I'm under orders to bring you to General Hammond, sir.
O'NEILL: Never heard of him.
SAMUELS: He replaced General West. He says it's important. Has to do with the Stargate.
Hearing that, O'Neill finally turns away from the telescope.

I had a dream the other night that would suggest I was walking through solid object, although I do not recall if I actually did in the dream. The wall in that apartment had become some kind of transparent. I wrote about that dream and I wrote about how it seemed that I was flying on the so-called "Stargazer" L-1011 just before it crashed and I was sitting in a seat behind the pilot, which was actually me. I wrote about some other scenes in the dream and then flying over a stop sign in a road, which was a T-junction and of how we flew over the section of road that ended at the T-junction and that reminded me of that lyric about missing the sign which led to a turn for the worse. The pilot turned his head back towards me although he did not turn around far enough to look at me and he said something about how that sign had my name on it.

GUARD: (re: O'Neill's wristwatch) What is this?
O'NEILL: (in pain) It's a watch.
The Serpent Guard's helmet retracts to reveal Teal'c, who looks curiously at the watch.
TEAL'C: This is not Goa'uld technology. Where are you from?
O'NEILL: Earth. Chicago if you want to be specific.
TEAL'C: (cutting him off) Your words mean nothing. Where are you from?
JACKSON: (squatting down) Ah, excuse me.
As Teal'c looks down, Daniel reaches down and draws a symbol in the dirt: a triangle with a small circle at its apex.
JACKSON: This is where we're from.
Teal'c stares at it for a second, then takes his staff, sweeping the tail end of the staff through the dirt, completely eradicating the symbol. He closes his helmet and turns away.
Chulak, exterior, day. Twin suns are shining in the blue sky, and the wind is blowing fiercely. Kawalsky emerges from a tent, putting his hat on.
KAWALSKY: Warren, let's go! Rise and shine! The sun is... (stops, correcting himself) suns are coming up. (as Warren gets up as well) We're going to be all right.
WARREN: (pulls his cap on) We can't go through another night like that, Captain!(Funny, Kawalsky was called Major earlier in the ep ;))
KAWALSKY: (rubs his hands together) Yeah, gets a little chilly on this planet at night. Colonel should have sent us a radio message by now.
WARREN: When do you have to make the decision? (pulls his vest on) Whether or not to go back to the Stargate?
KAWALSKY: That'll be about when hell freezes over.
WARREN: I think that pretty much describes our current situation.
KAWALSKY: (sharply) We are not leaving here without the Colonel. Is that understood? (irritated, going back under shelter) Another fine day on Planet Kawalsky.

Bob Langer named an Institute Professor
Elizabeth A. Thomson, News Office
March 2, 2005
Robert S. Langer, the Germeshausen Professor of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering, has been named Institute Professor, the highest honor awarded by the MIT faculty and administration.
The title of Institute Professor is reserved for those few individuals who have "demonstrated exceptional distinction by a combination of leadership, accomplishment and service in the scholarly, educational and general intellectual life of the Institute or wider academic community," according to MIT's Policies and Procedures manual. With Langer's appointment, there are now 15 Institute Professors.
"I cannot imagine an individual more deserving than Bob of recognition as an Institute Professor," said Robert C. Armstrong, the Chevron Professor and head of the Department of Chemical Engineering. "He is not only a great example to the world of MIT's excellence in research, but is also a great faculty colleague and teacher and mentor of our students at home. His enormous professional stature and his broad value and engagement across units of MIT are both important attributes of an Institute Professor."

Statement by Bill Gates on Receiving an Honorary Knighthood
LONDON -- Bill Gates, co-founder of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and chairman and chief software architect of Microsoft Corp., made the following statement on receiving an honorary knighthood from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II today:
"I am humbled and delighted. I’m particularly pleased that this honour helps recognise the real heroes our foundation supports to improve health in poor countries. Their incredible work is helping ensure that one day all people — no matter where they are born — will have the same opportunity for a healthy life, and I’m grateful to share this honour with them.
“This honour is particularly poignant given the deep connections Microsoft enjoys with the United Kingdom. Over the past 23 years we have benefited greatly from strong business alliances and the tremendous wealth of talent and creativity of our UK employees and researchers. The UK was the first country in which Microsoft set up a subsidiary outside the US, and our experience in the UK has been significant in shaping our international growth. The companies and organisations that we have supported and partnered with since, and their employees, have been an important part of the positive impact technology has had on economic growth and on the lives of people in the UK. I am proud of this special relationship and the role we have helped to play in the development of the UK technology industry.”
According to the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office, the honorary knighthood recognizes Gates’ contributions to improving health and reducing poverty in parts of the Commonwealth and elsewhere in the developing world. Gates also was recognized for his contribution to enterprise, employment, education and the voluntary sector in the United Kingdom.
Microsoft employs nearly 2,000 people in the United Kingdom. The company also supports a strong ecosystem of 17,000 partner businesses that have helped spur technology growth and adaptation in the UK economy. In addition, Microsoft Research Cambridge was Microsoft’s first research laboratory to be established outside the United States. The lab was set up in July 1997 and today employs 80 world-class researchers.
Her Majesty conferred the honour in a private ceremony held at Buckingham Palace. Gates was accompanied by his wife, Melinda Gates, co-founder of the foundation.
Later in the day, Gates will speak on a panel at the Wellcome Trust titled “Global Health: Putting Science to Work for the Developing World.” The panel will focus on innovative approaches to increasing research on diseases of the developing world, including strategies to engage private industry in global health research.
