The President. Secretary Hodel, Dr. Anderson, Dr. Neddermeyer, Dr. Trivelpiece, and ladies and gentlemen:
You know, from long years out on the mashed-potato circuit, you always tried to think of some reason that you could sort of express at the beginning of your remarks as to why you were qualified or what you had in common with the occasion that could bring you there. And the only thing that I could think of for this morning goes back some years to when I was doing a television show called "The General Electric Theater." [Laughter]
And I remember that I was up at that great installation in the State of Washington where so much was being done with nuclear power. And in one particular building where they were showing me through, why, we put on felt boots and we put on some gowns and then we went through. But then we had to peel all of this off. And there was a slot machine there in which you put your hands and your feet— [laughter] —and there were four dials that started ticking away as to the amount of radioactivity that you might have acquired in your extremities. And mine all—on three of them, stopped. But on my left hand, that dial kept on ticking, and it was getting up there toward where the numbers were red. And I was getting a little concerned. And the manager of the plant looked over my shoulder, and he says, "Oh, your left hand." He says, "That always happens." He said, "That's the radium dial on your wristwatch." [Laughter] I was very relieved.
I was 200 miles away from there when I realized—I don't have a radium dial. [Laughter] Every once in a while, I still put my head under the covers and look to see if my hand's lighting up. [Laughter]
But on December 2d, 1942, James Conant, the Science Adviser to the President of the United States, received a coded message during a phone call from Arthur Holly Compton, "The Italian navigator has landed in the New World," Compton said. Conant inquired, "How were the natives?" And Compton answered, "Very friendly."

The Piccadilly line is 100 years old on December 15. And to celebrate the centenary of one of the Tube's most well-loved lines, London Underground (LU) is planning a series of events.
Eagle-eyed passengers will already have noticed the first of a set of celebratory panels appearing in some Piccadilly line trains.
Six panels have been produced each highlighting a key historical event at famous Piccadilly Line stations.
The stations featured are: Arnos Grove, Arsenal (formerly Gillespie Road), Covent Garden, Leicester Square, Down Street (closed, but a shelter during WW2), Holloway Road and Earl's Court.
Centenary posters in the same stunning design as the panels are going up in stations from December 1.
Leaflets giving a brief and colourful history are also available from stations.
Mike Challis, General Manager of the Piccadilly Line, said: "We just want to say a very happy birthday to a famous Tube line that's now been at the heart of London's transport system for a hundred years.
There are not many people who have not heard of the Piccadilly line and its Centenary provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the efforts of the men and women who built and work on the line."
There will be more celebrations over the coming weeks.
These will include performances by the RPM Dance Theatre at the Riverside Studios on December 10 and 11, and a special 'Happy Birthday' event at Leicester Square on December 15.
The Piccadilly Line opened on December 15 1906.

The Next Wave of Microsoft Office Products
Gates pointed to the next wave of Microsoft Office products, currently code-named “Office 12,” as a significant development to advance information work in this changing business landscape. “Office 12” will be available in the second half of calendar year 2006 with the first beta version expected this fall.
In the next generation of Office, Microsoft is focused on delivering tools that enable individual workers to make a stronger impact with their daily tasks, manage their communications and collaboration in a unified environment, and more readily visualize and extract valuable insights from large volumes of incoming information. All of this will help enable businesses to be more competitive in the “New World of Work” by extending the capabilities of software to drive better business performance.
