The Paradise Syndrome, Based On Actual Events
My original plan was to try to make it up there on October 15th.
I even made a rare purchase of clothing and for the purpose of trying to make my way up to the top of Mica Peak, Idaho.
But nope, the day of September 14th rolled around and I decided I had to go up there sooner. And that day was almost definitely, and then by the end of the day the 14th, most definitely going to be September 15th. That was going to be the day I would learn whether or not my legs could push almost 300 pounds of me, gear, and bicycle up to almost 5000 feet. So, because the cool-looking thermal cycling jacket doesn't fit me very well, or for some other reason, I had to - HAD TO - find out if I could make it up there.
Impossible for me to pedal up the steepest inclines. Choking on the dust from the dirt road that might now be a massive lake of mud after today's brief rain-showers, the first in a long time. Large crushed rock under about an inch thick or more of powdered dust and the rippled road surface made me wonder many times if my skinny hybrid tires were going to burst. But I made it back down a hell of a lot faster than my ascension.
41 miles there and back. 3000 feet elevation gain over about 9 miles. My legs telling me today: Ready willing and able to ride bicycle again 50 miles there and back to Coeur d'Alene. My mind saying: Screw that. I'm going to sit here again most all of the waking hours today at this stupid desk in front of this stupid computer.

Cyanide poisoning occurs when a living organism is exposed to a compound that produces cyanide ions (CN-) when dissolved in water. Cyanide poisoning is a form of histotoxic hypoxia because the cells of an organism are unable to use oxygen, primarily through the inhibition of cytochrome c oxidase. Acute hydrogen cyanide poisoning can result from inhalation of fumes from burning polymer products that use nitrile in their production, such as polyurethane, or vinyl. It can also be caused by breakdown of nitroprusside into nitric oxide and cyanide during treatment of hypertensive crisis.[specify]
If cyanide is inhaled it causes a coma with seizures, apnea, and cardiac arrest, with death following in a matter of seconds. At lower doses, loss of consciousness may be preceded by general weakness, giddiness, headaches, vertigo, confusion, and perceived difficulty in breathing. At the first stages of unconsciousness, breathing is often sufficient or even rapid, although the state of the victim progresses towards a deep coma, sometimes accompanied by pulmonary edema, and finally cardiac arrest. A cherry red skin color that changes to dark may be present as the result of increased venous hemoglobin oxygen saturation. Cyanide does not directly cause cyanosis. A fatal dose for humans can be as low as 1.5 mg/kg body weight.

Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
