The Last Starfighter (1984)
1980 film "The Final Countdown" DVD video:
US Navy chief petty officer: It's a code.
US Navy commander Dan Thurman - USS Nimitz CVN 68 executive officer: Can you break it, Chief?
CPO: I think someone's putting us on.
Dan Thurman: Why?
CPO: Because I learned this code at Great Lakes. It's ancient!

Subject: Orlando
You sent me that photo of you and me from that day I graduated US Navy basic training in Orlando Florida in July 1984.
Do you have anyway of knowing the precise date that photo of us was taken?
I also want to know if you know the precise date we all were at the Disney park in Orlando.
My official military records tell me I left basic training on July 16th but I don't think that was the date we graduated.
My guess is we were at Disney on the 14th or the 15th. Graduation was a Friday if I remember correctly and that might have been the 13th.
Or graduation was the 6th and we had liberty on the 7th and 8th.
I think it was the former. Graduation on the 13th

Centauri: Alex! Alex! You're walking away from history! *History*! Did Chris Columbus say he wanted to stay home? Nooooo. What if the Wright Brothers thought that only birds should fly? And did Galoka think the Ulus were too ugly to save?
Alex Rogan: Who's Galoka?
Centauri: [beat] Never mind.
Alex Rogan: Listen, Centauri, I'm not any of those guys. I'm a kid from a trailer park.
Centauri: If that's what you think, then that's all you'll ever be!

Intel 80386
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Intel 80386, also known as i386 or just 386, is a 32-bit microprocessor introduced in 1985. The first versions had 275,000 transistors and were the CPU of many workstations and high-end personal computers of the time. As the original implementation of the 32-bit extension of the 80286 architecture, the 80386 instruction set, programming model, and binary encodings are still the common denominator for all 32-bit x86 processors
Architecture
The processor was a significant evolution in the x86 architecture, and extended a long line of processors that stretched back to the Intel 8008. The predecessor of the 80386 was the Intel 80286, a 16-bit processor with a segment-based memory management and protection system. The 80386 added a 32-bit architecture and a paging translation unit, which made it much easier to implement operating systems that used virtual memory.

KIRK: V-G-E-R ...V-O-Y-A-G-E-R ...Voyager! ...Voyager VI?
DECKER: NASA. National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Jim, this was launched more than three hundred years ago.
KIRK: Voyager series, designed to collect data and transmit it back to Earth.
DECKER: Voyager VI ...disappeared into what they used to call a black hole.
KIRK: It must have emerged sometime on the far side of the Galaxy and fell into the machine's planet's gravitational field.
SPOCK: The machine inhabiters found it to be one of their own kind, primitive yet kindred. They discovered its simple twentieth-century programming. Collect all data possible.
DECKER: Learn all that is learnable. Return that information to its Creator.
SPOCK: Precisely, Mister Decker, the machines interpreted it literally.
SPOCK: They built this entire vessel so that Voyager could fulfil it's programming.
KIRK: And on its journey back it amassed so much knowledge, it achieved consciousness itself. It became a living thing.
ALIEN MACHINE VOICE: (unintelligible)
ILIA PROBE: Kirk unit, V'Ger awaits the information.

WRAY: Mm-hmm.

WALLACE: Uh, I'll save you the trouble. I'm not crazy - which is pretty darned impressive, all things considered. I went from living at home with my mom to being stranded on a spaceship billions of light years from Earth! And screw "The Last Starfighter", because all those hours playing Halo didn't prepare me for this!
WRAY: No-one was prepared for this.

MCCOY: That's a pretty far out story.
KIRK: Mister Cochrane, do you have a first name?
COCHRANE: Zefram.
KIRK: Zefram Cochrane of Alpha Centuri, the discoverer of the space warp?
COCHRANE: That's right, Captain.
MCCOY: But that's impossible. Zefram Cochrane died a hundred and fifty years ago.
SPOCK: The name of Zefram Cochrane is revered throughout the known galaxy. Planets were named after him. Great universities, cities.
KIRK: Isn't your story a little improbable, Mister Cochrane?
COCHRANE: No, it's true. I was eighty seven years old when I came here.
KIRK: You say this Companion found you and rejuvenated you? What were you doing in space at the age of eighty seven?
COCHRANE: I was tired, Captain. I was going to die, and I wanted to die in space. That's all.
SPOCK: True, his body was never found.
COCHRANE: You're looking at it, Mister Spock.

(Ignoring him, O'Neill turns to the car parked at the kerb and beckons.)

[Weir is led in blindfolded and made to sit in a chair. A Genii soldier steps forward to speak; she can't see him.]
PRENUM
Dr. Weir… I am Prenum of the Genii. I'm rather surprised. No, astonished that you would have the audacity to come here.
WEIR
You heard our message. The Wraith are at our doorstep.

And we are understandably delighted at the prospect of your demise.
WEIR
That may be so. But still, we have something that you want.
PRENUM
C4.
WEIR
More than that. We have an opportunity for you to test your weapon at no risk to yourselves, and a chance to strike at the Wraith. You have no idea how close they are.
PRENUM
(walking around her)
The Wraith have come, Doctor. Six days ago. Fortunately, we detected their approach and we were able to shut down our reactors in time. Hundreds of lives were lost on the surface, but thousands more were saved because our underground complex went undetected. So, you see, the threat to the Genii has come and gone. So far as the Wraith are concerned, this planet is no longer of interest to them.

EVERETT: Six naqahdah enhanced nuclear warheads, twelve hundred megatons apiece. They emit almost zero EM and are otherwise invisible to radar. Once deployed, they will detonate by proximity fuse.
FORD: Space mines?
RADNER: That's right. We use Jumpers in stealth mode to place them in a pattern between the armada and Atlantis. Major, we were hoping you could help us with that.
SHEPPARD: Yes, but I recommend keeping a couple in reserve.
EVERETT: Negative. We're only gonna get one shot at this.
SHEPPARD: We have to consider the possibility ...
EVERETT: Four of my men are pilots. Beckett is giving them the gene inoculation right now.
Colonel Everett: Assuming it takes, you will familiarise them with the Jumpers, and they will become our fighter screen.
SHEPPARD: Along with me.
EVERETT: I have another job for you. I understand that this base is equipped with a chair weapons platform like the one we found in Antarctica.
WEIR: Yes, but we have no way of powering it.
EVERETT: We do now. We brought a Mark Two naqahdah generator.
RADNER: We found a way to increase the power output by six hundred percent. It won't last nearly as long but it should be able to power the chair for as long as we need it to.

A Dart manages to avoid his fire and sweeps low over the gun, activating its transporter beam and sweeping away not only Ferrell but the other marines who were firing machine guns nearby. Site cleared for Riverfront Park fountain
By Mike Prager
The roar of a chain saw filled the air at Riverfront Park on Thursday as workers began clearing the path for construction of a new fountain at the park’s entrance along Spokane Falls Boulevard.
The $1.5 million fountain – designed so that people can walk and play among its many water jets – is one of two large-scale improvements being undertaken on the south side of the park this year.
Workers last month removed the park’s vintage gondola as part of a $2.5 million upgrade of the breathtaking ride above lower Spokane Falls and gorge.
At the fountain site at Spokane Falls Boulevard and Howard Street, a demolition crew Thursday ripped out a small food concession building and cut down two sycamore trees standing in the way of the project.
Next week, crews will begin removing pavement as part of the job of digging a 14-foot-deep hole to contain the fountain’s hidden reservoir vault, said Dan Seibel, superintendent for Walker Construction of Spokane, the general contractor on the job.
A large vehicle pullout area near the Carousel is going to be blocked off during construction and will eventually become part of the fountain’s pedestrian plaza. The pullout is frequently used by school groups and visitors, who will now have to go elsewhere for loading and unloading.
Work is expected to be completed in August, Seibel said. Much of the initial work on the vault system will take place below ground level.
“It’s going to create a real grand entryway to the park,” said Park Board President Jeff Halstead. “I think it will be a great gathering place for people.”
The idea for the fountain dates to the creation of Riverfront Park in the 1970s, but it gained momentum in the 1990s when the city Park Board and Rotary Club 21 members teamed up to finance the project.
Rotary has raised $850,000 in contributions and is still seeking donations. The Park Board has authorized spending $550,000 out of a voter-approved park bond issue dating to 1999.
Proponents said the fountain will create a free summertime play feature in the heart of the city. It will also become a prominent piece of civic art with year-round displays of water, colored lights, music and even winter ice formations.
The work of Spokane artist Harold Balazs is being incorporated into columns that will support an overhead fountain sculpture. More than 150 jets capable of throwing 3,500 gallons of water a minute will send out a variable pattern of mists and streams from ground level to a height of 40 feet.
The underground vault will recapture the water and filter it so that users can safely play in the sprays. The fountain will be accessible to wheelchairs.
Perron Collaborative, of Spokane and Portland, has been heading up design of the project. It enlisted the fountain expertise of CMS Collaborative, of Santa Cruz, Calif. The electrical subcontractor on the job is Power City Electric, of Spokane. A crew from Rob’s Demolition of Spokane was hired for the initial clearing Thursday.
Also this year, the parks department is going to revise the landscaping at the east end of the park where a small performance area is tucked behind trees and a low ridge. One of three wooden foot bridges is slated to receive new decking as well.

Defense Mechanisms
By Saul McLeod, updated 2017
Sigmund Freud (1894, 1896) noted a number of ego defenses which he refers to throughout his written works. His daughter Anna (1936) developed these ideas and elaborated on them, adding ten of her own. Many psychoanalysts have also added further types of ego defenses.
Defense mechanisms are psychological strategies that are unconsciously used to protect a person from anxiety arising from unacceptable thoughts or feelings.
We use defense mechanisms to protect ourselves from feelings of anxiety or guilt, which arise because we feel threatened, or because our id or superego becomes too demanding. They are not under our conscious control, and are non-voluntaristic.
Ego-defense mechanisms are natural and normal. When they get out of proportion (i.e., used with frequency), neuroses develop

Oral Roberts, in full Granville Oral Roberts, (born Jan. 24, 1918, near Ada, Okla., U.S.—died Dec. 15, 2009, Newport Beach, Calif.), American evangelist. The son of a Pentecostal preacher, he underwent a conversion experience in 1935. He spent 12 years as a pastor in several towns in the South and built up his own organization, the Pentecostal Holiness Church. He studied at Oklahoma Baptist College (1943–45), emerging as a Methodist. Claiming direct communications from God, he began an itinerant ministry of faith healing in the late 1940s. The Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association, based in Tulsa, Okla., became the parent organization for other endeavours, including a publishing firm, and Roberts became known for his luxurious way of life. Beginning in the 1950s, he reached wide audiences through radio and television. In 1963 he founded Oral Roberts University in Tulsa. He continued his association with the university into the early 21st century, holding the office of chancellor.

Low Self-esteem
What is it? What to do about it.
Posted Apr 14, 2013
A response to a response.
A woman responded anonymously to my most recent blog post by saying, “…I really have nothing to offer. I can’t see why anyone would want to marry me.” Then she goes on to add, “I’ve been treated like a loser throughout my life (starting with my mother, who abused me.) Now I can’t shake this ‘loser’ mentality. I feel inferior to every single person I meet; and, of course, that leads to people treating me like crap…” She goes on to say that that “sense of worthlessness is “slowly destroying” her.
I know nothing about this woman’s age or circumstances. I do not know for certain that she is a woman, except that she describes herself as “attractive (not stunning, but decent,)” and “stunning” is a word not usually used in connection with men. The state of mind she is describing is what is referred to commonly as “low self-esteem,” which, in her case, seems to have reached devastating proportions.
She is correct in pointing out that the attitudes we have towards ourselves, and towards the world in general, grow out of the way we are treated growing up. Some children are told that they are “no good,” sometimes in subtle ways and sometimes explicitly. They may be compared unfavorably to other children. They may be ignored or abused. Sometimes, paradoxically, that message is communicated by parents who are always telling their children they are great, even when they are messing up. The message that comes through, then, is that it does not matter to the parents whether or not their child is doing well.
Having low self-esteem is not just a global sense of being worthless; it manifests itself in action—or in inaction--whenever the child--the grown child—attempts to do anything. That person feels inadequate in social situations, including dating, and incapable of accomplishing any demanding (and desirable) work. When these feelings are severe, that individual becomes a failure. Feeling profoundly pessimistic, he/she will not try to accomplish anything worthwhile. Anything challenging will seem to be too difficult. Expectations of failure become self-fulfilling.
Such persons are also likely to feel guilty besides feeling inadequate and ineffectual. They blame themselves for everything. They are suffering from a chronic, low-level depression which does not respond to anti-depressant drugs, although psychiatric practice being what it is nowadays, they are likely to be given a trial of these drugs. This is the reason that some studies suggest anti-depressants are no better than placebos. This population of patients does not respond to them. They are not suffering from an illness, such as a major depression, which is a remitting and relapsing disorder; they are suffering from a set of long- held beliefs-- from misconceptions they have learned growing up. From ideas. Treatment has to be directed towards changing these ideas.
Changing ingrained ideas is very difficult. Some people with low self-esteem continue to feel bad about themselves despite having had signal successes in the world. This is called the “faker syndrome.” They think that, although everyone thinks well of them, and they themselves know they have accomplished specific goals, that very soon they will be asked to do something beyond their abilities. The world will see, then, that they have been “faking it.” One such man, a leader in his scientific field, came home from Europe with a plaque denoting his having won an international award. When he showed it to his father, his father shook his head sadly. “With your brains,” he said, “you could have been a doctor like your brother.” His experience demonstrates that sometimes these childhood influences continue into adulthood.

History
Scope Trial
The Scopes Trial, also known as a the Scopes Monkey Trial, was the 1925 prosecution of science teacher John Scopes for teaching evolution in a Tennessee public school, which a recent bill had made illegal. The trial featured two of the best-known orators of the era, William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow, as opposing attorneys. The trial was viewed as an opportunity to challenge the constitutionality of the bill, to publicly advocate for the legitimacy of Darwin’s theory of evolution, and to enhance the profile of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
BUTLER ACT
The theory of evolution, as presented by Charles Darwin and others, was a controversial concept in many quarters, even into the 20th century.
Concerted anti-evolutionist efforts in Tennessee succeeded when in 1925, the Tennessee House of Representatives was offered a bill by John W. Butler making teaching evolution a misdemeanor. The bill was passed six days later almost unanimously with no amendments.
When the ACLU received news of the bill’s passage, it immediately sent out a press release offering to challenge the Butler Bill.
JOHN SCOPES
What became known as the Scopes Trial began as a publicity stunt for the town of Dayton, Tennessee.
A local businessman met with the school superintendent and a lawyer to discuss using the ACLU offer to get newspapers to write about the town. The group asked if high school science teacher John Scopes would admit to teaching evolution for the purposes of prosecution.
Scopes wasn’t clear on whether he had precisely taught the subject, but was sure he’d used materials that included evolution. Scopes taught physics and math, and while he said he accepted evolution, he didn’t teach biology.
It was announced to newspapers the next day that Scopes had been charged with violating the Butler Act, and the town wired the ACLU to procure its services. The Tennessee press roundly criticized the town, accusing it of staging a trial for publicity.

DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
NAVY CROSS (NX)
BACKGROUND:
The Navy Cross was established by Act of Congress (Public Law 253, 65th Congress), approved on February 4, 1919. The Navy Cross has been in effect since April 6, 1917. The Navy Cross was designed by James Earl Fraser (1876-1953). Originally, the Navy Cross was lower in precedence than the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, because it was awarded for both combat heroism and for "other distinguished service." Congress revised this on 7 August 1942, making the Navy Cross a combat-only award and second only to the Medal of Honor. Since its creation, it has been awarded more than 6,300 times.
CRITERIA:
The Navy Cross may be awarded to any person who, while serving with the Navy or Marine Corps, distinguishes himself in action by extraordinary heroism not justifying an award of the Medal of Honor. The action must take place under one of three circumstances: while engaged in action against an enemy of the United States; while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or, while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict in which the United States is not a belligerent party. To earn a Navy Cross the act to be commended must be performed in the presence of great danger or at great personal risk and must be performed in such a manner as to render the individual highly conspicuous among others of equal grade, rate, experience, or position of responsibility. An accumulation of minor acts of heroism does not justify an award of the Navy Cross.
DESCRIPTION:
The Navy Cross is a modified cross patée one and a half inches wide (the ends of its arms are rounded whereas a conventional cross patée has arms that are straight on the end). There are four laurel leaves with berries in each of the re-entrant arms of the cross. In the center of the cross a sailing vessel is depicted on waves, sailing to the viewer's left. The vessel is a symbolic caravel of the type used between 1480 and 1500. Fraser selected the caravel because it was a symbol often used by the Naval Academy and because it represented both naval service and the tradition of the sea. The laurel leaves with berries refer to achievement. The ribbon is navy blue with a center stripe of white. The blue alludes to naval service and the white represents the purity of selflessness.

Kettering Bug
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Kettering Bug was an experimental, unmanned aerial torpedo, a forerunner of present-day cruise missiles. It was capable of striking ground targets up to 121 kilometres (75 mi) from its launch point, while traveling at speeds of 80 kilometres per hour (50 mph). The Bug's costly design and operation inspired Dr. Henry W. Walden to create a rocket that would allow a pilot to control the rocket after launch with the use of radio waves. These designs would be the precursor to the modern-day missiles.
Flight test
The prototype Bug was completed and delivered to the Aviation Section of the U.S. Army Signal Corps in 1918, near the end of World War I. The first flight on October 2, 1918 was a failure: the plane climbed too steeply after takeoff, stalled and crashed. Subsequent flights were successful, and the aircraft was demonstrated to Army personnel at Dayton.

Well, once they realize our Gate's impenetrable they should just give up.

On May 7, 1925, John T. Scopes was arrested for teaching evolution at Rhea County High School in Dayton, Tennessee. When the famous “monkey trial” ended, Scopes was convicted of violating a Tennessee law that made it a crime to “teach any theory that denies the story of the Divine Creation of man as taught in the Bible, and to teach instead that man is descended from a lower order of animals.” Since that time, teachers have been on the front lines of the battles between evolutionary biology and alternatives such as intelligent design and creationism.
from my journal as Kerry Burgess:
I remember so vividly that day.
I have wondered many times about that specific day back in March 2004.
I remember renting a moving truck and putting my beloved Jeep Wrangler on a full trailer that I towed behind it.
I remember I was exhausted from moving out all my furniture by myself.
I had a large sectional leather sofa, a king size bed, lots of computers and stuff, and two heavy-ass tube televisions including one that I loaded last thinking it must weigh 700 pounds, among other stuff.
I remember in these past years wondering about how I moved everything on the 1st of the month, instead of the last day of February.
I worked all day moving that stuff and I remember driving through the night from Redmond near Seattle all the way across the state to Spokane on the east side of the state.
I stopped at an interstate highway rest stop in Idaho just outside of Coeur d'Alene and I slept a few hours in the driver's seat of that rental truck.
I was waiting for the storage building business in Coeur d'Alene to open that day, the 2nd.
I then checked in that day to the Crossland Hotel where I was living when I successfully completed the Ironman Coeur d'Alene on Sunday 27 June 2004.
Cannot recall the precise day I moved from the Crossland.
I moved back to Seattle and to the suburb of Kent. I must have moved in there in maybe late August or early September 2004. I left all my stuff in the storage locker in Idaho.
The first calendar day after that I have evidence of now is 6/11/2005, which was the day I went to the Redmond City police, which was a few yards away from that apartment I moved out of on 3/1/2004.
