Dr. Heywood R. Floyd is a fictional character in the Space Odyssey series by Arthur C. Clarke. He features in 2001: A Space Odyssey and is the main protagonist in 2010: Odyssey Two and 2061: Odyssey Three. In the first movie he is portrayed by William Sylvester, in the second by Roy Scheider.

Heywood Floyd was born in 1956 in the USA. By 1999 he is chairman of the National Council of Astronautics, in charge of overseeing all American flight operations. He has two daughters (only one in the movies, born 1994) and was widowed when his wife Marion died in a plane crash (in the movies this didn't happen until after 2001).

After the fiasco on board Discovery with HAL 9000 and the disappearance of David Bowman, Heywood Floyd was labeled as a scapegoat. He was forced to resign from the National Council of Astronautics, to be replaced by Victor Millson. He moved to Hawaii, where he became the Chancellor of the University. He married a woman named Caroline and together they had a son Chris, born 2008 (2006 in the movie).

He was one of the three American experts who were posted aboard the USSR vessel Alexei Leonov in the joint US-USSR mission back to Jupiter to find out what happened. He went along with the designer of Discovery, Walter Curnow, and the creator of HAL, Dr Sivasubramanian Chandrasegarampillai or Dr Chandra for short. Once Discovery had been reached and HAL reactivated, he was warned by David Bowman to leave the Jovian system in preparation for the transformation of Jupiter into the mini-sun Lucifer in order to assist in the survival of the creatures living in the subterranean oceans of Europa.

In the novels, Floyd's marriage to Caroline broke apart as a result of the Leonov mission.

If "Dr. Floyd's" wife was as great as mine, then I feel sad they didn't stay married.

I started trying to remember anything that could represent being on Mars. My first thought was of the Painted Desert. I forget which southwestern state that is located in. My mom mentioned it when the three of us were traveling in her VW "bug" from California back to Oklahoma. Then I remembered something about school in De Queen. Then I thought again about details from 4th grade. I remember thinking several times recently that I was being prompted to think of the 4th grade. My teacher was Mrs. Duggan and I think her daughter was in our clas too. There was Brenda Gartrell, Tim Reed (?), Chris Pulliam. I started remembering a gully in some red dirt that I like to dig in during recess. It was some form of crumbly red clay that was very interesting. I couldn't remember when that was though although I could remember the school. THEN I narrowed it down: that memory of digging in the crumbly red clay was in 1976. For the first part of 1976, I was in 4th grade, then the second part I was in 5th grade. 5th grade was in a new building that was well outside town, as 4th grade was just outside the central "Hill Valley" type of downtown which was De Queen. The 5th grade building seemed like it was a very long ways outside, although, if I mapped it out, it probably would not be that far. But I think that distance is symbolic. It is symbolic of a long trip to someplace new.

I can still picture myself sitting there in that trailer in De Queen seeing the color images from Mars on TV. I am wondering if in reality, that was a memory of me standing on Mars looking out at the landscape through my helmet visor.
