A Hammock activity is a schedule (project management) or project planning term for a grouping of subtasks that "hangs" between two end dates it is tied to. (Or the two end-events it is fixed to.)
A Hammock activity groups subtasks which are not related in the hierarchial sense of a Work Breakdown Structure.

IBM Personal Computer
The IBM Personal Computer, commonly known as the IBM PC, is the original version and progenitor of the IBM PC compatible hardware platform. It is IBM model number 5150, and was introduced on August 12, 1981. It was created by a team of engineers and designers under the direction of Don Estridge of the IBM Entry Systems Division in Boca Raton, Florida.
At the time, Don Estridge and his team considered using the IBM 801 processor and its operating system that had been developed at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York (The 801 is an early RISC microprocessor designed by John Cocke and his team at Yorktown Heights.) The 801 was at least an order of magnitude more powerful than the Intel 8088, and the operating system many years more advanced than the DOS operating system from Microsoft, that was finally selected.

The space shuttle Challenger exploded in a huge ball of red and yellow flame today and fell in blazing pieces into the Atlantic Ocean, apparently killing the seven astronauts aboard, including schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe.
The explosion on the $1.2 billion shuttle came at one minute, 15 seconds after launch when the shuttle was about 11 miles high and 9 miles down range from Kennedy Space Center.
Out of the flame of the descending shuttle came objects still belching white smoke. They were apparently the solid fuel boosters still firing. Huge chunks of the shuttle could be seen falling into the water followed by billowing smoke.
NASA made no announcement concerning the fate of the seven crew members, including McAuliffe, the 37-year-old schoolteacher from New Hampshire, the first civilian to be selected for a shuttle crew. The agency also did not offer any early theory or explanation of the cause of the explosion.
Observers said it was unlikely that anyone aboard survived.
There have been no fatalities in 55 previous manned U.S. space missions. Today's explosion, however, occurred 19 years and one day after three astronauts were killed on Jan. 27, 1967, in an explosion on the launch pad in the Apollo space program.

STS-51-L was the twenty-fifth flight of the American Space Shuttle program, which marked the first time a civilian had flown aboard the Space Shuttle. The mission used Space Shuttle Challenger, which lifted off from Launch Complex 39-B on January 28, 1986 from Kennedy Space Center, Florida.
The mission ended in disaster following the destruction of Challenger 73 seconds after lift-off because of the failure of an O-ring seal on Challenger's right Solid Rocket Booster (SRB). The failure of the seal allowed a flamethrower-like flare to impinge upon one of two aft SRB attach struts, which eventually failed, freeing the booster to pivot about its remaining attachment points. Subsequently, the forward part of the booster cylinder impacted the external tank (ET) intertank area, leading to a structural failure of the ET—the core structural component of the entire stack. A rapid burning of liberated propellants ensued. With the structural "backbone" of the stack compromised and breaking up, the SRBs flew off on their own, as did the orbiter, rapidly disintegrating due to the overwhelming aerodynamic forces. The first Gulf of Sidra incident, August 19, 1981, was an incident in which two Libyan Sukhoi Su-22 Fitter fighter jets engaged two US F-14 Tomcats off of the Libyan coast.
On the morning of the 19th, two VF-41 Black Aces F-14As, Fast Eagle 102 (CDR "Hank" Kleeman/LT "DJ" Venlet) and Fast Eagle 107 (LT "Music" Muczynski/LTJG "Amos" Anderson), were flying combat air patrol to cover aircraft engaged in a missile exercise. An E-2A Hawkeye gained radar contact with two Sukhoi Su-22 'Fitters' which had left Okba Ben Nafi Air Base near Tripoli. The Fitters were heading towards the Tomcats and the lead Fitter fired an AA-2 Atoll short range heat seeking missile at the Tomcats.
