Kalpana Chawla (March 17, 1962 – February 1, 2003), was an Indian-American scientist and a NASA astronaut. She was one of seven crewmembers killed in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.
Her first space mission began on November 19, 1997 as part of the six astronaut crew that flew the Space Shuttle Columbia flight STS-87. Chawla was the first Indian-born woman and the second person of Indian origin to fly in space, following cosmonaut Rakesh Sharma who flew in 1984 in a Soviet spacecraft. On her first mission Chawla travelled over 10.4 million miles in 252 orbits of the earth, logging more than 360 hours in space. During STS-87, she was responsible for deploying the Spartan Satellite which malfunctioned, necessitating a spacewalk by Winston Scott and Takao Doi to capture the satellite.

In "Generations," they filmed that orbital skydiving with Kirk but then cut it from the movie that was released. I am wondering if that was planned because of STS-1 in 1981. From what I've read, the shuttle crew discussed abandoning the shuttle but they did not do that obviously. Maybe that is why the orbital skydiving scene was filmed but not included with the release.
For the past several hours, I have been examining my memory for anything that could represent me falling out of the Columbia as it landed during STS-1, assuming that something such as that did occur to me.
There was that time in France where I walked off the wrong side of the train because I was drunk and didn't even realize I had fallen until I was face down in the dirt.

There was also an astronaut from Ukraine onboard as well, which seems important. Aha...That was the first flight Kalpana was on. I have been feeling more and more angry as I think about her being lost with the others on Columbia.

An armed guard keeps watch outside Mr. Burns' window, chanting as they march. Smithers appears at a window and hushes them, and they resume their chant more quietly.

In the Simpsons' bed, it seems that Homer, too, is calling out for "Sheriff Lobo" to be brought back. He wakes up and screams. Marge asks what's wrong, and Homer points at the calendar. It's Mr. Burns' birthday today! Marge doesn't see what's wrong with that, and Homer explains that every time Mr. Burns has a birthday, all his employees have to help out at the party. "And I always get some terrible job," Homer whines, recalling his turn at holding the pinata while Mr. Burns swings at it, blindfolded.
That day at work, Homer is surrounded by howls of derisive laughter as he tries to remove the coat hanger that's stuck in his shirt. "It's not funny," says Homer petulantly, "and the one in my pants really hurts."

Kalpana Chawla (March 17, 1962 – February 1, 2003), was an Indian-American scientist and a NASA astronaut. She was one of seven crewmembers killed in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.
Her first space mission began on November 19, 1997 as part of the six astronaut crew that flew the Space Shuttle Columbia flight STS-87. Chawla was the first Indian-born woman and the second person of Indian origin to fly in space, following cosmonaut Rakesh Sharma who flew in 1984 in a Soviet spacecraft. On her first mission Chawla travelled over 10.4 million miles in 252 orbits of the earth, logging more than 360 hours in space. During STS-87, she was responsible for deploying the Spartan Satellite which malfunctioned, necessitating a spacewalk by Winston Scott and Takao Doi to capture the satellite.

Claude Marion Akins (May 25, 1926 – January 27, 1994) was an American actor. He was born in Nelson, Georgia, and grew up in Bedford, Indiana. He was a 1949 graduate of Northwestern University , where he studied theatre. and became a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. Powerful in appearance and voice, Akins could be counted on to play the clever (or less than clever) tough guy, on the side of good or bad, in movies and television. He is best remembered as Sheriff Lobo in the 1970s TV series B.J. and the Bear, and later The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo, a spin-off series, with Ben Cooper appearing as Waverly.
In movies, his first appearance was in From Here to Eternity in 1953. Akins portrayed prisoner Joe Berdett in the movie Rio Bravo (which also starred John Wayne, Ricky Nelson, Dean Martin and Angie Dickinson), Naval Lt. Commander Farber in Don't Give Up The Ship (starring Jerry Lewis), Sgt Kolowicz in Merrill's Marauders, Rockwell W. "Rocky" Rockman in The Devil's Brigade, the Reverend Jeremiah Brown in the 1960 movie Inherit the Wind, outlaw Ben Lane in Comanche Station that same year, Seely Jones in A Distant Trumpet (1964), and the gorilla leader Aldo in Battle for the Planet of the Apes, the last original Apes movie in 1973.
