WASHINGTON - The Navy's top admiral died in an apparent suicide Thursday just before a news magazine was preparing to question him about whether he was wearing combat decorations to which he was not entitled, Pentagon officials said.
Adm. Jeremy Michael Boorda, chief of naval operations apparently shot himself in the chest at his home at the Washington Navy Yard, using a .38-caliber pistol that belonged to his son-in-law, according to Pentagon officials. He was pronounced dead on arrival at District of Columbia General Hospital.
But Navy officials said Thursday that they still were not certain that the admiral's death was related to the medals issue. Two notes were found at Boorda's residence; they were sealed by investigating police.
However, the Washington Post reported in today's editions that the notes, one of which was written to Boorda's wife, expressed concern about the disgrace resulting from an impending disclosure questioning whether he had earned that two Vietnam-era decorations he had once worn. He had wrongly thought he was entitled to them, he said, but worried that some would never see his action as an honest mistake. The New York Times said the notes suggested Boorda had been driven to take his life by fear that the reputation of the Navy, already battered by a series of scandals, would be further harmed by the disclosures about his medals.
Pentagon officials said that Boorda had worn the Combat V until about a year ago and then took it off, but they were unable to explain the change. They said that the interview initially had been scheduled for 1 p.m., but scheduling problems forced Boorda to postpone it to 2:30 p.m.
Rear Adm. Kendell Pease, who was with Boorda shortly before the shooting, said that when he told Boorda about the subject of the interview, the admiral abruptly announced that he was going home for lunch instead of eating the meal that had been brought to his office.

The Navy said today that it had no plans to make public the two suicide notes left by Adm. Jeremy M. Boorda, the Chief of Naval Operations, who shot himself last week after questions were raised about the legitimacy of two Vietnam War combat decorations that he had worn.
Defense Department officials said that Admiral Boorda's wife and children considered the letters to be family property and had decided to keep them private, even though one was addressed not to the family but to "the sailors."
The Navy is not prepared to release the notes at this time," said Rear Adm. Kendell Pease, the Navy's chief spokesman. "We just don't feel it's appropriate." Asked whether the family had made the decision not to release the letters, the admiral said he had no comment.
Admiral Boorda, the Navy's highest-ranking officer, shot himself in the chest outside his Washington home on May 16, shortly after being told that Newsweek magazine had requested an interview with him to ask about two tiny "V" pins that he had worn on his ribbons until last year. The pins signify combat experience; his war service was on ships off the coast of Vietnam.
Navy officials have said that while Admiral Boorda might have been embarrassed by publicity over the medals, they still found it difficult to believe that the issue by itself would have been enough to lead him to suicide. Many had hoped that the letters would be made public to help end the speculation about the cause of Admiral Boorda's death.

STS-59 Shuttle mission was a Space Shuttle program mission that took place in 1994. The launch was chronicled by the 1994 Discovery Channel special about the Space Shuttle Program.
Endeavour began its sixth mission on the morning of April 9, 1994 with an on-time launch at 7:05 a.m. Eastern time. Soon after, the six astronauts began activating the sensitive radar equipment in the payload bay that would be operated around the clock during the next ten days.
By 8 p.m., the Space Radar Laboratory-1 experiments of NASA's Mission to Planet Earth were all activated and began their study of the earth's ecosystem.
STS-59 ground controllers finished activating Spaceborne Imaging Radar-C (SIR-C) and began processing its first images of the earth, while engineers working with the X-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar (X-SAR) worked their way through some initial activation problems.
Meanwhile, the Measurement of Air Pollution from Satellite (MAPS) instrument took data on the carbon monoxide content and distribution in the atmosphere since shortly after launch.
During the initial activation of the X-SAR, controllers reported they were unable to fully power up the amplifier that provides power to the radar. The problem was in the low voltage circuit internal to the power amplifier. Engineers were not immediately able to explain the problem, so they turned off the power amplifier for about three hours. The problem was traced to an oversensitive protection circuit, a type of circuit breaker. The radar lab engineers bypassed the protection circuit and turned on the instrument at about 4:20 p.m. Saturday. It worked without incident, completing 100 percent of its scheduled observations overnight.
Thereafter, X-SAR controllers continued a deliberate, step-by-step check of the instrument, and successfully bounced X-band radar pulses off the Earth and recorded data.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- The shuttle Endeavour, with a crew of six astronauts, roared into space on Saturday for the first flight test of a powerful new radar observatory developed under an international agreement for global environmental research.
If this and at least one other test flight of the $391 million observatory prove successful, U.S. and European collaborators are hopeful that a future version of the device can be placed aboard continuously orbiting satellites.
The observatory was developed to survey a wide range of environmental phenomena -- including rainfall levels and measurements of the water content of mountain snow packs. Also, it will survey crop yields, soil erosion, shifts in ocean currents that influence seasonal weather changes and earthquake fault lines.

Fire investigators seek cause of NOAA blaze

Investigators today will get their first waterside view of the damage caused by Wednesday's four-alarm fire that gutted two piers on South Lake Union.
The fire began around 1:20 a.m. Wednesday
The fire apparently started at the end of one of two NOAA piers, which jut about 500 and 600 feet into Lake Union. A couple of Seattle police department Harbor Patrol boats arrived within minutes, and officers "were madly pumping water onto the fire but they weren't even making a dent," Robbins said.
Seattle firefighters attempted to fight the blaze from the pier but were forced back to the lake's eastern shore when the wind suddenly changed, causing flames "to mushroom" to both the north and south, said Seattle Fire Chief Gregory Dean.
It took 100 Seattle firefighters, along with dozens more from several Eastside departments and the Coast Guard, until about 11 a.m. to get the stubborn blaze under control.
Two of five buildings on the 15-acre NOAA Pacific Marine Operations Center were destroyed and two large steel-hulled ships, the 175-foot McArthur I and the 224-foot Assertive, suffered heat damage to their starboard sides, said Ablondi.
"It's devastating," Ablondi said of the fire that will force NOAA officials to find alternate berths for four ocean-research vessels when they return to their Seattle homeport in the fall. It could be a couple of years before the piers are rebuilt, he said.

The story begins in 1866, a mysterious sea monster is sighted by ships of several nations; an ocean liner is also damaged by the creature. The United States government finally assembles an expedition in New York City to track down and destroy the menace. Professor Pierre Aronnax is a noted French marine biologist and narrator of the story happens to be in New York at the time and is a recognized expert in his field, he is issued a last-minute invitation to join the expedition, and he accepts. Canadian master harpoonist Ned Land and Aronnax's faithful assistant Conseil are also brought on board. The expedition sets sail from Brooklyn aboard a naval ship, the Abraham Lincoln, which travels down around the tip of South America and into the Pacific Ocean. After much fruitless searching, the monster is found, and the ship charges into battle. During the fight, the ship's steering is damaged, and the three are thrown overboard. They find themselves stranded on

They are quickly captured and brought inside the vessel, where they meet its enigmatic creator and commander, Captain Nemo. The field of candidates running for Seattle mayor has increased, with Seattle Port Commissioner Paul Schell saying he will run.
Earlier this year, Schell said he would not run, but reconsidered at the urging of supporters.
