The Red Flag: Communism and the Making of the Modern World

Twenty years ago, when the Berlin Wall came down, communism in Europe was declared as good as dead. The last rites came when the Soviet Union collapsed two years later.
In China, of course, the Communist Party still controls the levers of power, but it has abandoned most of its principles. In spite of the egalitarian ethic, China is now the second most unequal society in Asia after Nepal. In all but name, the market rules in Beijing.
Around the globe, only a handful of avowedly communist states remain, such as Cuba and North Korea, which both cling to power and their old ideology under a cloak of nationalism, to protect themselves from their neighbours rather than out of any serious conviction.
In 1992, Francis Fukuyama wrote The End of History and the Last Man, arguing that liberal democracy had triumphed, and that the great ideological contest was over for good. But capitalism now faces its own existential crisis. So have we written off communism too soon?
That is a question David Priestland puts in the introduction to his hefty new history of communism, The Red Flag. But it will never be quite the same again, he admits: “Communism will not return as a powerful movement in its old form, but now globalised capitalism is in crisis, it is no longer inconceivable that at least some of the autarkic, populist and illiberal features of the old communist world will resurface.”
Priestland presents Joseph Stalin as a romantic, Lenin as a moderniser. Mao Zedong was a romantic, Deng Xiaoping a moderniser. But he also believes that Nikita Khrushchev, Stalin’s shrewd successor, was a romantic – and so was the man who finally pulled down the pillars in the communist temple, Mikhail Gorbachev. If Gorbachev had not been “a typical romantic Marxist”, he would never have believed that communism could survive perestroika, he says – and therefore he would never have embarked on the revolution that destroyed it.
It is hard to stomach that men such as Stalin, who launched the Great Terror, and Mao, who deliberately started a civil war with his Cultural Revolution, each responsible for the deaths of millions of their fellow countrymen, can be called “romantics”. But Priestland means it in the sense of being so idealistic and revolutionary that they were capable of horrendous violence and cruelty in pursuit of their ends.
He admits that Stalin was both ruthless and deeply suspicious. But he does not go so far as late Polish historian Leszek Kolakowski in concluding that events such as the Great Terror were not aberrations of communism but, rather, the inevitable consequence of a system that sanctioned the dictatorship of an elite.

Anna Nicole Smith had her day in the Supreme Court yesterday. But to the palpable frustration of a media throng, she kept it low key.
Fully clothed in black, the 38-year-old former Playboy Playmate of the Year sat quietly in the back of the courtroom, listening intently to lawyers' arguments before exiting without comment through a side entrance.
Millions know her as the star of her own eponymous reality show on the E! cable channel, as a columnist for the National Enquirer and as a pitchwoman for TrimSpa diet pills.
But her persona yesterday was that of the Widow Marshall, aggrieved spouse of the late Texas oil plutocrat J. Howard Marshall II -- whom she wed in 1994, when she was 26 and he was 89. He died the following year. According to Anna Nicole, J. Howard intended to give her tens of millions of dollars from his estate, but his plan was fraudulently thwarted by his son, Pierce, who wanted the old man's money for himself. She has been fighting Pierce ever since.
Sober as always as they wrestled with the legal dispute at hand, the justices nevertheless seemed aware of stepping into an epic soap opera of the kind that could have happened only in Texas. The battle between Anna Nicole and Pierce "is quite a story," as Justice Stephen G. Breyer observed.

James Howard Marshall II (January 24, 1905 – August 4, 1995) was a wealthy magnate, American oil business executive, university professor, attorney and federal government official. His life spanned more than nine decades and almost the entire history of the oil industry, from the early years when uncontrolled production depleted valuable fields and natural gas was burned at the well head, to the decades of energy shortages and the Arab Oil Embargo. Marshall was married to Anna Nicole Smith during the last 14 months of his life. His estate became the subject of protracted litigation which remains ongoing, part of which was reviewed by the Supreme Court in Marshall v. Marshall.

The disagreement on what to do with the remains has been raging quietly on the sidelines since soon after Marshall's death Friday at a Houston hospital.
While that dispute occurs, Smith's attorneys have taken their first step toward claiming a share of the huge estate left by the 90-year-old.
With her lawsuit to gain spousal support from the J. Howard Marshall II Living Trust wiped out by his death, Smith's lawyers now apparently will seek half his earnings since the oilman and the model were married on June 27, 1994.

A hearing is scheduled Monday on whether the remains of 90-year-old oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II should be cremated, as his son wants, or entombed in a mausoleum, as his 27-year-old starlet widow demands.
Marshall died unexpectedly Aug. 4 while his son, E. Pierce Marshall of Dallas, and his widow, Anna Nicole Smith, were legally sparring over control of the multimillionaire's money.
Under Texas law, the widow is supposed to have first say on such matters as disposition of the body, but attorney Joseph S. Horrigan, representing the son, outlined in court documents a case for letting Pierce Marshall make the decision.

U.S. launches its first lunar exploration trip in 21 years

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- An unmanned spacecraft successfully roared off a launch pad Tuesday on a seven-month journey to photograph the moon as part of the first U.S. lunar exploration mission in 21 years.
Clementine I will use sensors built by the Defense Department to make pictures of the moon and an asteroid called Geographos.
Data collected when Clementine points its instruments at the moon next month and Geographos next summer will be merely a byproduct of a $75 million-plus mission primarily intended to test new defense technology. The key instruments are five advanced sensors designed for detecting and tracking missiles, said the Defense Department's Ballistic Missile Defense Organization, which sponsored the mission with NASA.
A two-stage Titan 2G booster, a converted ballistic missile, lifted Clementine off at 8:34 a.m. and sent it southwestward over the Pacific.
Contact with the spacecraft was achieved several hours later as planned. "Everything's going fine," said Tech. Sgt. Joel Ragan.
The mission is designed to test the detection capabilities of the sensors, using the Earth, moon and Geographos as targets.
Clementine will stay in Earth's orbit for about seven days, then begin a looping trajectory to enter the moon's orbit on Feb. 20.
The mission is the first lunar exploration since the Apollo moon missions ended 21 years ago. The last, Apollo 17, landed in December 1972.
Clementine will spend two months in two different orbits around the moon, mapping the entire surface.
The spacecraft will then leave lunar orbit on a four-month trip to Geographos, passing within 75 miles of the asteroid on Aug. 31.
Clementine I cost $55 million, and the Titan and other launch costs added another $20 million to the mission, said Lt. Col. Michael Stepp.
The mission is the Defense Department's first deep-space experiment, or trip beyond Earth's orbit.
