So it has to be better than that. It has to be an order of magnitude greater than anything I have done so far. Something really compelling. The object arriving to block out the Sun is a good one but I don't think that is what I am grasping at this moment. That still might happen in the future.
Perhaps that observation back then was something of an echo of something else that happened and that has bearing on the future.

Several weeks ago I was having a series of random thoughts and now I am wondering today why I was thinking about those details. I was imagining that Mike Mullen had ordered this area destroyed with nuclear bombs and 3 bombs were going to be dropped from ballistic missiles over the downtown Seattle area, the Bellevue city and then someplace a few miles south of here in perhaps the Kent area.

As I imagined those series of events, I imagined that he had created a series of numbers that would be written onto the actual bombs and he would be the only person that would know the full combination of numbers for those three bombs.
Somehow in those random thoughts, I was supposed to read those numbers off the bombs before detonation and then write them down somewhere. One possible approach was simply that I wrote it in a letter and mailed it to the Pentagon.

A woman whose photo I have seen on the internet was going to pick me up in a car and drive me to the location of each bomb so I could write down the numbers.

One notion that I ponder is whether Mullen has long been suspected as a traitor and seeing him in photos in the news triggered those memories in my mind and that I had heard that he might be complicit in such future acts of domestic terrorism.

I don't know who that woman that was driving me around but I have started wondering whether that aspect of me writing down the numbers from the bombs has a different meaning than is obvious, such as I was going to be the one blamed for the destruction.

I was also thinking again recently about the series finale episode of "Battlestar Galactica" and of how "Starbuck" knew the precise jump coordinates for the planet Earth. I was wondering if that plot element is based on what I was writing in my journal about how I would write down the sequence of numbers that had been written onto nuclear bombs that were a few hundred feet above the surface of downtown Seattle and I would do all that because time was frozen and I was the only one who could still freely move around.

The first notion I had was that I would then travel to Tiger, Washington, and on a road next to the river there, I would paint those number sequences on the side of the road. I might have first thought I would paint them on the side of a building next to that place in the road I was thinking of. Then over time, I started thinking I would write the numbers down on the underside of a bridge.

Windows 7 launch has a warm and fuzzy touch

NEW YORK — After incurring the wrath of unhappy Windows Vista users, Microsoft has embarked on a strategy for Windows 7 that amounts to a public hug.
During Thursday's high-profile launch of the new operating system, the Windows Web site was turned over to a never-ending Twitter and Facebook stream of breathless updates about Windows 7.
A new ad campaign features customers and developers saying, "I'm a PC and Windows 7 was my idea." — a reference to customer feedback Microsoft used to design the new software.
Kylie, the 5 ½-year-old who gave new meaning to "early adopter" in Microsoft's TV commercials, introduced Chief Executive Steve Ballmer at the event. He gave her a pink laptop and she gave him a hug. The only thing missing was a furry Windows mascot posing for photos with its arm slung around reviewers who trashed Vista, the previous operating system.
"We're trying to make everyday usage better in the way our customers wanted it," Ballmer said in his speech. "Simpler, faster, more responsive for the billion people who use Windows."

Investigators have recovered two more bodies from the wreckage of the Kursk nuclear submarine, bringing the total retrieved so far to 59.
Five more bodies were also discovered on Tuesday in the fourth and fifth compartments of the Kursk.
Preparations are underway for their retrieval, the state prosecutor's office and Russia's Northern Fleet headquarters said.
The Kursk's 118-strong crew died when powerful explosions sent the submarine plunging to the Barents Sea floor during military exercises on August 12 last year.

Bill Rogers, an American pilot taking special training in the States, gets an unauthorized hop to England to pay a surprise visit his beautiful Norwegian wife. He is devastated when he finds that she has moved out of their flat and is living a new and glamorous lifestyle entertaining a lot of men. After being knocked unconscious by an unseen assailant in her upscale West End apartment, he awakens to find his wife shot to death with his service pistol. On the run from police he persuades a young woman who runs a Salvation Army soup kitchen to believe in his innocence and help him uncover the real culprit. Although the police do not know as yet that he is in Britain, he has just 36 hours before he is declared AWOL and his identity is exposed. The trail leads to a corrupt customs official, smuggling, blackmail, and a mysterious safety deposit box.

Toland had been a busy fellow for the past twelve hours. The data on Iceland came in slowly, one confusing piece at a time, and even now he didn't have enough to call a clear picture. The group's orders had been changed, though only after too many hours of indecision. The mission to reinforce Iceland was a washout. For the past ten hours the battle group had been heading due east toward friendly air cover from England and France. Someone had decided that if the Marines could not go to Iceland, then they might find useful employment in Germany. Bob had expected them to be diverted to Norway, where a Marine Amphibious Brigade was already in place, but getting them there could prove difficult. A furious air battle had been raging over northern Norway for almost twenty hours, with losses heavy on both sides. The Norwegians had started the war with scarcely a hundred modern fighters. They were screaming for help, but there was no help for anyone as yet.
"They're not just chewing the Norwegians up," Toland observed. "They're driving them south. Most of the attacks are on the northern bases, and they're not giving them any breather at all."
Chip nodded. "That figures. Gives their Backfires a straighter shot at us. Briefing time."

The 747 touched down even earlier than the pilot had promised, which was fine but wouldn't help on the connecting flight. The good news for the moment was that the first-class passengers got off first, and better still, a U.S. consular official met Clark and Chavez at the gate, whisking them through customs. Both men had slept on the flight, but their bodies were still out of synch with the local time. An aging Delta L-1011 lifted off two hours later, bound for Dulles International.
Captain Sato remained in his command seat. One problem with international air travel was the sameness of it all. This terminal could have been almost anywhere, except that all of the faces were gaijin. There would be a day-long layover before he flew back, doubtless full again of Japanese executives running away.
And this was the remainder of his life, ferrying people he didn't know to places he didn't care about. If only he'd stayed in the Self-Defense Forces - maybe he would have done better, maybe it would have made a difference. He was the best pilot in one of the world's best airlines, and those skills might have ... but he'd never know, would he, and he'd never make a difference, just one more captain of one more aircraft, flying people to and from a nation that had forfeited its honor.

Fukushima's reactor cores still too hot to open
Six months after the disaster that caused three meltdowns, efforts to stabilize the Japanese nuclear power plant continue.

On 11 March, a magnitude-9.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Sendai in Japan, knocking out power at the nearby Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. In the hours and days that followed, three of the plant's six reactors melted down, triggering a series of explosions and fires at the site. Six months later, what progress has been made to stabilize the plant, and what is yet to be done?
What is happening at the site right now?
On any given day, 2,500-3,000 workers are on site. Many are cleaning up radioactive debris scattered by the explosions. Others are installing and operating systems to decontaminate radioactive water. Still others are erecting a shroud over the Unit 1 reactor, to prevent further contamination from the meltdown spreading to the environment. Similar covers may follow at Units 2 and 3, which also melted down (see Video).
Are the reactors stable?
Not entirely, but they are much more stable than they were six months ago. After the earthquake, the three reactors operating at the time shut down, but their uranium fuel continued to decay and release heat. The systems that keep the fuel cool in an emergency stopped working, and in the first hours after the accident the fuel became so hot that it probably melted. The melting is thought to have created a mess at the bottom of the reactors and released hydrogen gas that eventually ignited, causing explosions.

Q: Can nuclear explosions cause earthquakes?
A: On January 19, 1968, a thermonuclear test, codenamed Faultless, took place in the Central Nevada Supplemental Test Area. The codename turned out to be a poor choice of words because a fresh fault rupture some 1200 meters long was produced. Seismographic records showed that the seismic waves produced by the fault movement were much less energetic than those produced directly by the nuclear explosion.
Analysis of local seismic recordings (within a couple of miles) of nuclear tests at the Nevada Test Site shows that some tectonic stress is released simultaneously with the explosion. Analysis of the seismic wavefield generated by the blast shows the source can be characterized as 70-80 percent dilational (explosive-like) and 20-30 percent deviatoric (earthquake-like). The rock in the vicinity of the thermonuclear device is shattered by the passage of the explosions
shock wave. This releases the elastic strain energy that was stored in the rock and adds an earthquake-like component to the seismic wavefield. The possibility of large Nevada Test Site nuclear explosions triggering damaging earthquakes in California was publicly raised in 1969. As a test of this possibility, rate of earthquake occurrence in northern California (magnitude 3.5 and larger) and the known times of the six largest thermonuclear tests (1965-1969) were plotted and it was obvious that no peaks in the seismicity occur at the times of the explosions. This is in agreement with theoretical calculations that transient strain from underground thermonuclear explosions is not sufficiently large to trigger fault rupture at distances beyond a few tens of kilometers from the shot point.
