Second day of fighting follows deaths of 5 Americans

NAIROBI, Kenya -- New fighting erupted today in Somalia in the second day of a major U.N. assault aimed at shattering the military command structure of fugitive warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid.
The fighting followed Sunday's deaths of five American soldiers and the shooting down of two U.S. Blackhawk helicopters in the early hours of the search for Aidid's key lieutenants.
The fighting died down overnight in the Somali capital of Mogadishu, but shooting could be heard from the area where Sunday's battle took place, including apparent cannon fire from U.S. helicopters.
"We consider the operation to be ongoing," Maj. David Stockwell, the chief U.N. military spokesman in Mogadishu, said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press in Nairobi.
Stockwell said he had no details of the renewed fighting. He said officials were investigating reports that a U.S. soldier had been taken prisoner.
The mission started Sunday was the biggest military operation launched by the United Nations since it took over the humanitarian effort in May and brought the largest single day's toll of American deaths.
An undetermined number of U.N. peacekeepers were wounded Sunday.
Stockwell said Sunday's fighting erupted after hundreds of U.N. troops, including two U.S. army infantry companies and 70 elite Rangers, captured 24 Somalis in a search for Aidid's aides. Stockwell said several key aides were among those rounded up.
"We were going after Aidid's military lieutenant structure," Stockwell said. "We did not expect to find Aidid."
Stockwell said three of the Somali detainees died of wounds sustained in the shooting that broke out as they were being led out of the area where they were captured.
A spokesman for Aidid said at least 30 Somalis were killed in the fighting, including a number of civilians caught in the cross fire.
The two Blackhawks were shot down by rifle-propelled grenades a mile east of the Bakara Market in southern Mogadishu, injuring crew members.

WASHINGTON -- At least five American soldiers were killed and several wounded Sunday when a Somali militia shot down two American helicopters during U.N. military operations in Mogadishu, Pentagon officials said.
About 20 members of a faction led by a fugitive Somali fighter, Gen. Mohamed Farrah Aidid, were taken into custody during the U.N. operation, including a high-ranking associate of the militia leader, the Pentagon said.
The operations continued into the night, and Pentagon officials cautioned that details, including the numbers of people killed and wounded, might change as more reports were received.
Earlier in the day, three American Marines were wounded and a Somali employee was killed when their lightly armored vehicle was blown up by a mine outside the gates of a port used by the United Nations in Mogadishu, the Somali capital.
Taken together, the casualties were the worst suffered in a single day by the U.S. military in the East African country.

Callers inundated the Houston Chronicle with complaints about a front page photograph in Tuesday's editions showing a dead U.S. soldier being dragged through the streets of Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia.
The unidentified serviceman's body was being pulled along the ground by ropes through a crowd of Somalis. He was one of 12 U.S. soldiers killed in weekend battles with forces loyal to Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid.
Chronicle employees said most complainants expressed concern about the picture's graphic nature, and many were worried about its impact on the serviceman's family.
Callers also bombarded local radio talk shows.
Jon Matthews, morning talk show host on station KPRC, said he received 50 or 60 calls, all deploring the use of the picture.
"I called attention to it," he said of the picture. "I said, "Imagine your son . . . ' "
Chronicle employees estimate the paper received more than 100 calls protesting use of the photograph. A few callers expressed support for publishing it.
Chronicle Editor Jack Loftis said it was decided to run the picture after lengthy discussions in the newsroom.
"In the end, we felt that Chronicle readers should share in the outrage that the photo provoked," he said. "For an American soldier to be subjected to such an atrocity without the American public being fully informed seemed unacceptable to Chronicle editors.
"We anticipated the shock that has been expressed by many of our readers, but believe that publishing the photo was in the best interest of good journalism. Words would not have sufficed in covering this horrible event."

President Clinton sent more American troops and arms to Somalia today, warning of swift retaliation if captured U.S. servicemen are mistreated.
At least 12 U.S. Army soldiers were killed, 78 wounded and six reported missing in Somalia after a weekend of battles between U.N. peacekeepers and forces loyal to fugitive warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid.
U.S. and U.N. officials said they were seeking the safe return of an American helicopter pilot who was filmed being interrogated and the humane treatment of U.N. troops taken captive.
Concerns for the safety of the captured U.S. pilot and the six missing Americans were heightened by photos and film that showed the brutal display of the body of a U.S. serviceman in Mogadishu on Monday.
"We consider the way they were displayed very barbaric," Maj. David Stockwell, the chief U.N. military spokesman, said today in a telephone interview from Mogadishu. He said the United Nations was also seeking to retrieve the remains of the soldiers.
The Pentagon refused to confirm the number of missing Americans. "That's a real sensitive issue," Stockwell said on NBC.
Jonathan Howe, the U.N. special envoy to Somalia, would not spell out the efforts being made to secure the release of the American captives. He did say, however, that "we are not right now engaged in an intensive dialogue."
The special envoy, a retired U.S. admiral, said it would be disastrous if U.S. forces were to pull out of Somalia now, as some politicians and other critics have demanded.
Clinton Monday gave the "sternest possible warning" to Aidid.
Seventy-eight Americans were wounded in the fighting. The Pentagon said "a handful" were wounded and feared captured.
During the fight against Aidid's forces, the heaviest and most costly to date, two U.S. helicopters were shot down.
The death toll caused a sharp reaction from Capitol Hill where some Congress members called for ending the U.S. presence in Somalia.
Television reports Monday showed a badly injured man being put on camera by Somali captors. He was identified as Army Chief Warrant Officer Mike Durant and said on the videotape that he was a Black Hawk helicopter pilot. An off-camera voice asked Durant what he thought about killing innocent people, and he replied with a wince, "Innocent people being killed is not good." He bore facial wounds and his left eye was blackened.
A New Hampshire television station reported that Durant is a Tennessee resident whose mother lives in Berlin, N.H.
Other videotape from Mogadishu showed townspeople dragging a body through the streets and identified it as another American casualty, although Pentagon officials would not confirm that. Somalis were shown dancing on the wreckage of a helicopter.
Clinton, on the West Coast for a speech, said that if Somalis mistreat American captives, U.S. troops will respond, apart from any U.N. action.
"We have issued the sternest possible warning that Americans taken captive, doing their duty under international law for the United Nations, are entitled to be treated with all the respect accorded such troops under international law," Clinton said.
Clinton said he expected American captives to be given adequate medical treatment, food and housing, and should be allowed to contact international relief organizations.
"We are pursuing that even as I speak," the president said.

Bush Exploration Company merges with Spectrum 7 and George W. is named chairman and CEO of the new company.
April 21, 1989
A group of investors assembled by George W. buys the Texas Rangers from Bush family friend Eddie Chiles for $75 million. George W. is chosen to serve as the managing general partner--the public face for the team.
March 2, 1999
George W. announces the formation of a presidential exploratory committee. He raises a record $36.3 million during the first six months of 1999.
July 25, 2000
George W. selects Dick Cheney as his running mate.

Bush Earned Profit, Rangers Deal Insiders Say

On April 21, 1989, a 39-member ownership group led by George W. Bush and a Fort Worth financier closed a deal to buy the Texas Rangers, installing Bush as the managing partner.
When the group sold the team last year for $250 million, Bush's share was $14.9 million after an initial investment of a relatively modest half-million dollars. His handsome profit raised questions about whether his name had landed him a sweetheart deal.
Running the team together, Rose and Bush were a study in contrasts – Rose is as studied, cerebral and shy as Bush is impulsive, loquacious and brazen. "George is very intuitive, very quick to come to the path he wants to take," said Rose. "And I'm pretty plodding. Never in our partnership did we have a disagreement over the paths. But George came up to a path in 15 minutes, and I never was able to come with the path until three days. . . . Sometimes he called me daily and I'd say, well, I still got the abacus whirling."
