They examined my most memorable experiences and determined which features made the most impression, or imprint to my mind. Then, they substituted other events, possibly even real experiences, with those other events. The most memorable event was hitting that 9 point with my 35-caliber. I was standing there at my assigned spot listening to the dogs barking, knowing that something was going to happen in front of me. Micheal was off to my left a pretty good ways. I remember worrying a lot about that later because I remember thinking how stupid we were for not establishing rules on what to do if a deer jumped out in between us which was very likely. We were on that underground natural gas pipeline and I wasn't too far from where I got my red Ford stuck that time, although that incident happened much later I think. That corridor through the trees represents a specific place or maybe it symbolizes certain conditions or circumstances. Anyway, the 9 point glided in to my view from the right and then just stopped in front of me. I fired three times at it but missed. I'm not sure if those missed rounds actually represent misses or if it represents lack of discipline during combat. For the fourth round, I gave up on using the scope, which was unnecessary really, and switched to iron sights and nailed it. It jumped up slightly into the air and then dropped, shifted, a little bit to my left.

Attack in Somalia/Chronicle gets calls on photo of dead soldier

Callers inundated the Houston Chronicle with complaints about a front page photograph in Tuesday's editions showing a dead U.S. soldier being dragged through the streets of Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia.
The unidentified serviceman's body was being pulled along the ground by ropes through a crowd of Somalis. He was one of 12 U.S. soldiers killed in weekend battles with forces loyal to Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid.
Chronicle employees said most complainants expressed concern about the picture's graphic nature, and many were worried about its impact on the serviceman's family.
Callers also bombarded local radio talk shows.
Jon Matthews, morning talk show host on station KPRC, said he received 50 or 60 calls, all deploring the use of the picture.
"I called attention to it," he said of the picture. "I said, "Imagine your son . . . ' "
Chronicle employees estimate the paper received more than 100 calls protesting use of the photograph. A few callers expressed support for publishing it.
Chronicle Editor Jack Loftis said it was decided to run the picture after lengthy discussions in the newsroom.
"In the end, we felt that Chronicle readers should share in the outrage that the photo provoked," he said. "For an American soldier to be subjected to such an atrocity without the American public being fully informed seemed unacceptable to Chronicle editors.
"We anticipated the shock that has been expressed by many of our readers, but believe that publishing the photo was in the best interest of good journalism. Words would not have sufficed in covering this horrible event."

30 Minutes That Changed Everything
(CBS) On July 19th, 1989, the tail engine of a Chicago-bound United DC-10 blew up, destroying the plane's navigation system. At this point, piloting the plane was like driving a car without steering or brakes. The two men in charge of flying the plane, pilot Al Haynes and United flight instructor Denny Fitch (who was, fortuitously, a passenger) were forced to use the two wing engines as navigation devices. By throttling the left engine up, they could slowly turn the plane to the right, and vice versa.
Despite the strain - they flew like this for half an hour - the two men stayed calm, and managed to get the plane to Sioux City, where an unused runway was available for landing. Capt. Haynes even managed to get a joke in as he prepared to attempt a landing. When the air traffic controller told him he was cleared to land on "any runway," Capt. Haynes responded with: "You wanna be particular and make it a runway, huh?"
In an amazing stroke of luck, United flight instructor Denny Fitch just happened to be a passenger on the plane. When the engine blew, he went to the cockpit to help the pilot fly the plane. (CBS)
On the flight were Debbie McKelvey and her two children, daughter Devon, 5, and son Ryan, 7, who were on their way from their home in Colorado to a family reunion in Pennsylvania. As the crippled plane made its way to Sioux City, she told her kids repeatedly that everything would be fine. That was not what she was thinking.
"I'm telling them what to do, I'm telling them to follow the instructions," said McKelvey, who now lives outside Charleston, South Carolina. "But in the back of my mind, it's going, 'Why am I even doing this?' Ryan kept saying, 'Are we gonna be okay?' And I'm going 'Yes.' But I'm thinking 'No.'"
When they hit the runway, at 250 miles per hour, almost twice as fast as a normal approach, the plane cartwheeled and burst into flames. But amazingly, 184 of the 296 people on board the flight survived. Among the survivors were McKelvey and her children.
That 30 minutes changed their lives. "People say, 'Oh, think you'll ever win the lottery?' I say 'I have." Surviving the crash, she says, gave her a deep appreciation for life, a recognition that has lasted through the past nine years.
But there were problems too. They had to deal with fear, and with survivor's guilt. The crash also caused problems in McKelvey's marriage; the experience created a gap between she and her husband, who had not been on the plane. "Without a doubt my children and I have a bond that I don't think anybody could penetrate," she says. "There's less than 200 of us that went through what we went through."
