Scientist Disputes Finding Of Non-Solar-System Planet

If astronomers think they've found a planet about half the size of Jupiter orbiting star 51 Pegasi, they've got another think coming, a Canadian astronomer contends.
The first planet ever found beyond the solar system is but an illusion, David Gray says today in the British journal Nature.
What astronomers really see when they look at 51 Pegasi are regular pulsations of a lone star that mimic the effect of an orbiting planet, Gray concludes.
"Something else is going on, and it's no longer reasonable to talk about a planet pulling the star around," said Gray, a professor of astronomy at the University of Western Ontario in London.
When its discovery was announced 16 months ago, the so-called planet was thought to be the first ever found orbiting a star other than the sun. Since then, astronomers have found evidence of planets orbiting about 10 sunlike stars.
The planet discoveries have ushered in a new astronomical era, with researchers conjuring images of distant worlds similar to Earth's own solar system. NASA Administrator Dan Goldin has made it one of his agency's primary goals to snap a picture of a planet light-years away and collect basic information about its composition.
Gray's research doesn't threaten all of that - just some of it. Gray directly questions the existence of only one of the new planets - the one thought to orbit 51 Pegasi - and casts suspicion on two or three like it.
Nevertheless, his suggestion that the planet that got things rolling really doesn't exist has pulled planet hunters down from their mountaintop observatories and onto their favorite battleground - cyberspace.
"The conclusion claimed by Dr. David Gray is extraordinarily premature," Swiss astronomers Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz, the discoverers of the 51 Pegasi planet, wrote on a Web page maintained by the University of Geneva.
The issue is contentious partly because astronomers can't really see planets orbiting distant stars. They use indirect methods, gauging changes in the star's light, to suggest the presence of planets.
Lots of things can cause starlight to change slightly, but what planet hunters look for is an oscillation caused by a star's wobbling motion. A slight wobbling indicates that the gravitational pull of some invisible planet is tugging the star around.
So far, astronomers have detected light variations that look like such wobbling in many distant stars. They've concluded there's a planet responsible in a few cases.
Not so fast, says Gray, at least in the case of 51 Pegasi.
"Although at this stage, the cause of the . . . variations in 51 Pegasi are not fully understood, the chance of their being caused by a planet is vanishingly small," Gray writes in Nature.
He observed the 51 Pegasi 39 times between 1989 and 1996, noting each time how a very precise color of light was shifted away from its normal value. The pattern of shifts he collected, more detailed than any other observations of the star, rules out a planet, Gray concludes. He argues that subtle features he detected could be caused only by light variations in the star itself.

Fukushima No. 2 plant was 'near meltdown'

FUKUSHIMA--The Fukushima No. 2 nuclear power plant was "near meltdown" after being hit by tsunami following the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, according to the head of the plant.
The No. 2 plant, on the border of Naraha and Tomioka towns in Fukushima Prefecture, was opened to the media Wednesday for the first time since the disaster. It is 12 kilometers from the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, which suffered a meltdown. Both facilities are operated by Tokyo Electric Power Co.
Plant chief Naohiro Masuda, in charge of plant operations since the crisis, told reporters Wednesday, "The No. 2 plant almost suffered the same fate as No. 1 [which led to a severe crisis]."
On March 11, a 9-meter-high tsunami struck the No. 2 plant, while the No. 1 plant was hit by a 13-meter-high tsunami. The tsunami caused the No. 2 plant's seawater pumps, used to cool reactors, to fail. Of the plant's four reactors, three were in danger of meltdown.
Luckily, one external high-voltage power line still functioned, allowing plant staff in the central control room to monitor data on internal reactor temperatures and water levels.
By March 15, the No. 2 plant's four reactors reached a state of cold shutdown without any leakage of radioactive materials.
"[At that point, the situation at the No. 2 plant] was considerably different from the No. 1 plant where it was difficult to know what was going on," Masuda, 53, said.
However, despite intense efforts by all employees, it took a long time to stabilize the reactors.
On March 11, about 2,000 employees of the No. 2 plant worked to stabilize the reactors. Some employees connected 200-meter sections of cable, each weighing more than a ton, over a distance of nine kilometers.
Masuda noted the timing of the disaster was critical in saving the plant.
"We were lucky it happened on a Friday afternoon [and not on a weekend]," he said.
Masuda pointed out only 40 employees would have been at the plant if the earthquake had occurred in the evening or on a weekend.
"[In that case] it would be have been difficult for us to deal with the disaster," he said.

Tanaka Kakuei, (born May 4, 1918, Kariwa, Niigata prefecture, Japan—died Dec. 16, 1993, Tokyo), politician who was prime minister of Japan from 1972 to 1974 and who subsequently became the central figure in a major political scandal.
Tanaka was the only son of a bankrupt cattle dealer. He dropped out of school at the age of 15 and soon opened his own construction firm, the Tanaka Civil Engineering Company. Kakuei Tanaka (4 May 1918 – 16 December 1993) was a Japanese politician and the 64th and 65th Prime Minister of Japan from 7 July 1972 to 22 December 1972 and from 22 December 1972 to 9 December 1974 respectively. He was also the most influential member of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party until the mid-1980s, when he fell from power after a long series of scandals, leading him to be described as "that paragon of post-war corruption."
Then, on February 6, 1976, the vice chairman of the Lockheed Corporation told a United States Senate subcommittee that Tanaka had accepted $1.8 million in bribes during his term as prime minister, in return for having Japan's parastatal airlines purchase Lockheed L-1011 aircraft (the Lockheed bribery scandals).
