§ 794. Gathering or delivering defense information to aid foreign government

(a) Whoever, with intent or reason to believe that it is to be used to the injury of the United States or to the advantage of a foreign nation, communicates, delivers, or transmits, or attempts to communicate, deliver, or transmit, to any foreign government, or to any faction or party or military or naval force within a foreign country, whether recognized or unrecognized by the United States, or to any representative, officer, agent, employee, subject, or citizen thereof, either directly or indirectly, any document, writing, code book, signal book, sketch, photograph, photographic negative, blueprint, plan, map, model, note, instrument, appliance, or information relating to the national defense, shall be punished by death or by imprisonment for any term of years or for life, except that the sentence of death shall not be imposed unless the jury or, if there is no jury, the court, further finds that the offense resulted in the identification by a foreign power (as defined in section 101(a) of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978) of an individual acting as an agent of the United States and consequently in the death of that individual, or directly concerned nuclear weaponry, military spacecraft or satellites, early warning systems, or other means of defense or retaliation against large-scale attack; war plans; communications intelligence or cryptographic information; or any other major weapons system or major element of defense strategy.

(b) Whoever, in time of war, with intent that the same shall be communicated to the enemy, collects, records, publishes, or communicates, or attempts to elicit any information with respect to the movement, numbers, description, condition, or disposition of any of the Armed Forces, ships, aircraft, or war materials of the United States, or with respect to the plans or conduct, or supposed plans or conduct of any naval or military operations, or with respect to any works or measures undertaken for or connected with, or intended for the fortification or defense of any place, or any other information relating to the public defense, which might be useful to the enemy, shall be punished by death or by imprisonment for any term of years or for life.

(c) If two or more persons conspire to violate this section, and one or more of such persons do any act to effect the object of the conspiracy, each of the parties to such conspiracy shall be subject to the punishment provided for the offense which is the object of such conspiracy.

(d)
(1) Any person convicted of a violation of this section shall forfeit to the United States irrespective of any provision of State law—

(A) any property constituting, or derived from, any proceeds the person obtained, directly or indirectly, as the result of such violation, and

(B) any of the person’s property used, or intended to be used, in any manner or part, to commit, or to facilitate the commission of, such violation.

Whenever the President considers that unlawful obstructions, combinations, or assemblages, or rebellion against the authority of the United States, make it impracticable to enforce the laws of the United States in any State by the ordinary course of judicial proceedings, he may call into Federal service such of the militia of any State, and use such of the armed forces, as he considers necessary to enforce those laws or to suppress the rebellion.

I had another dream about being in that house I owned in Greer, SC, and that dream seemed to be early into my sleep period. An odd observation about that dream is that I seemed to dream about that dream a one or two hours later or maybe slightly more later than that. It seems to have been several hours before I got up. In that later dream I seemed to be thinking over that first dream and then I was dreaming or thinking or both about this time right now as I write about both dreams. In that first dream I walked through that short hallway and into the master bedroom on the main level of the house that I was using as an office while my bedroom was in one of the bedrooms upstairs. So anyway I had just walked into that room and I was turned towards the door in that room that connects to the deck on that back of the house and then suddenly there was a very bright light. In the dream I knew that a nuclear bomb had just exploded and then I was face down on the floor with my face covered by my hands or pressed into my arms and I guess I was wearing only a pair of shorts and I was aware that the hair on my body was standing up as though I was receiving an electrical shock. I have thought several before this dream that for certain people in the proximity of a nuclear blast the only reaction their senses will register after the blast and depending on their distance from the blast will be a sense of electric shock. So I was there on the floor and I was thinking the flash should only last a second or two but after what seemed to be quite a few seconds I peeked out very slightly from the my body covering my eyes and I could still see there was a blinding white light flooding the area. I was also thinking during that time in the dream or I was thinking this later in that later dream that I could also hear a sound and I guess it was the sound of the bomb traveling through air. But I am not certain what that means other than the obvious of what I was thinking during the dream. So I was still there and I was wondering if I was going to die because the fire slowly roasted me alive and I was wondering if another bomb was going to drop directly on my location and incinerate me first. The dream seemed to have ended there. I have been thinking there was something else I was going to add to this but now I cannot remember what it was. I might remember in a few minutes if there was something. Something else I was thinking during that time in the dream.

Oh yeah, now I remember. The dream did not seem to end there. The next series of scenes I remember were then of here in Seattle. For some reason, I was out on Aurora Blvd., or so it seemed based on the scenes I can still visualize to some degree and I seemed to be several miles north of downtown and I could see the Seattle skyline to the south. This first scene was in daytime and I could see there was a large fire to the west where Bellevue and Redmond would be but my sight was obscured by a large hill in that direction and the fire was beyond that hill. I was also aware that I had probably been exposed to ionizing radiation from the nuclear bomb blast and I did not know how much. At some point around that time I also seemed to note there was a large fire in the Seattle skyline but that is not a clear in my mind as the fire towards Bellevue and Redmond. That could just mean that I was looking directly at Seattle when that area was hit again. I don't know. Then the next scene I remember seemed to be night time and I was traveling with three other people but I cannot remember enough detail to articulate any of that. I vaguely recall some details that make me think we where along Aurora Avenue and near to Shoreline to the north. There was an area we walked to where someone had just dug several holes in the ground and the holes were freshly dug and I could see a shovel nearby and I think I took the shovel. I pondered over how the holes did not seem to be graves but I don't know what they were for. They could have been for small trees I guess but they were probably too close together. There was also a sense during the dream that I should know better than to take that shovel because I was a lawyer and I shouldn't just take it away from there. I think that was the last part of the dream. I don't think there was anything else after that point other than the next dream where I seemed to be thinking about that dream while in another dream and then dreaming of this time now where I am writing about those dreams.

The time traveler effect would seem to be distinct from what I call the couter-paradox effect but I have been think these past hour or two about how I have sometimes made references that suggest the two notions are the same. Or I think I have made them synonymous in my writings.

The reality of that notion in my mind is that what I call the 'time traveler effect' is what happens around me because there are people who are possession of information I give to them as a result of me being a time traveler. I give them information from the future when I time travel back to the past.

The counter-paradox effect, as I call it, is what happens to me to ensure that I generate information that is consistent with the information I deliver to the past when I time travel to the past. What that means is that I must make certain observations because if I do not make those observations then how can that information exist as information that was transferred by me the time traveler to the past? I wrote about that recently with my observations about destiny.

So what I think about a great deal over these past weeks and months and years is about the people who possess the information that I transfer from their future to my past when I time travel. They cannot be effected by what I call the counter-paradox effect because they are aware of what is going to happen, according my time travel communication. The same cannot be said about me when I make observations that are the result of their actions that are the result of information I provide to them as a time traveler. As I write, I do not describe the details of certain observations I make. That means those recipients of my time traveler communications have a wide latitude in what ever actions they take that are consistent with their personal mission goals, which is part of the support structure for me the time traveler.

So to summarize a point I have been thinking about for a while the difference of the 'time traveler effect' and what I call the counter-paradox effect seems to be relative to the state of the information that is involved. A time traveler effect occurs because I transfer information to different time periods because I am a time traveler. This summary is not comprehensive of certain scenarios I have thought of before or it does account for those scenarios; I can't really think it through very well right now. The effect that I call a counter-paradox is what happens to me because I have not yet traveled through time. I think that is completely thought through at this point. I am not yet a time traveler. But I do become a time traveler. The counter-paradox effect is what, as it most basic level of explanation, is what ensures I become a time traveler. Since I become a time traveler then reality must be consistent with the information I transfer from the future to the past.

Just before I awoke just now, I was in a building on a large U.S. Navy base. There are some details from the dream I have now forgotten. In the dream, which seems to be the first time I consciously remember this detail from any other dreams, my look-alike was there and I was consciously aware that I had assumed his identity and that I still have his identity. We were responsible for guarding something important such as a nuclear reactor although I never did see that building in the dream although it could have been in any building. I never did see him though but I knew we were in the same building at one point. I was walking around in that building and I had been in there several times and they sold hunting weapons there and I had looked at the shotguns several times but I never bought one because I didn't feel like spending the money. So then I was walking outside the building and some people walked out before me and turned off the lights as the left the building and then I flipped the light switches back on as I left the building. Then I was walking about the U.S. Navy base and I was actually carrying a shotgun at that point. I even looked down at it and noted that the barrel switch that is the trigger safety guard was off and the trigger was unlocked but I would later ponder in the dream whether I had a round in the chamber or not. I was walking around trying to get back to place where I had entered the base but I did not know where that was and the base was very large but I seemed to have a certain sense of direction about where I needed to go. I was walking around and passing people and then I was climbing around on a building and I saw a woman in a room of a building watch me climb down into some kind of concrete pit with pipes around and at that point I seemed to have the task of checking if anyone was down there hiding and because there seemed to be some kind of security alert on the base. Then I was climbing out and that was when I awoke.

Just before I awoke, I was dreaming of standing on the bridge of a U.S. Navy Los Angeles-class attack submarine. I cannot remember any details that identified which one. I guess it could have been the lead boat itself and that is why I remember the detail about Los Angeles. So I was on the bridge of the submarine, which was not entirely realistic now that I think about it although I could have been somewhere in the top of the sail structure but even that does not seem correct. So anyway, the boat was adrift for some reason and I was the only standing there in the bridge or control room or where ever it was I found myself after I seemed to walk into that area for some reason that I do not remember from the dream. I called for the commanding officer to return to that control room and I think he did but those details are too vague now to remember. At some point, I left that submarine and I crossed over to what seemed to be ballistic missile submarine and I was trying to find my way to the brow so I could return to the pier but I was having trouble finding my way around because sailors were painting the decks in the area where I jumped onto the ballistic missile submarine and it seems from the dream that I simply jumped over on the deck as the other submarine passed by. I was wearing the khaki working uniform of a U.S. Navy officer and I remember during the dream that I saw my reflection in a mirror on a bulkhead. As I was walking around that ballistic missile submarine I finally found an area that was being prepped for painting but did not have any wet paint on it so I made my way through there and that seemed to be the point where I was going to find my way to the brow and then to the pier but I don't remember that part from the dream. The last part of the dream was something about one of the sailors that was painting the deck was complaining about me walking across the deck and I am left with some uncertainty about whether I reprimanded that sailor for talking that way to an officer or whether I walked on and let it slide.

STS-71 Day 1 Highlights


On Tuesday, June 27, 1995, 7 p.m. CDT, STS-71 MCC Status Report # 01 reports:

Atlantis first achieved an orbit with a high point of 158 nautical miles by 85 nautical miles, the lowest orbital altitude ever flown by a Space Shuttle, allowing the spacecraft to close the more than 7,000 nautical miles to Mir rapidly at first, at a rate of about 880 nautical miles per orbit. Three hours and thirty-nine minutes after launch, Atlantis fired both Orbital Maneuvering System engines for a little over two minutes to raise its orbit to an altitude of 210 nautical miles by 158 nautical miles, an engine firing called the NC-1 burn that has now slowed Atlantis' closing rate on the Mir.

The shuttle is now about 5,400 nautical miles from Mir, closing on the station by about 280 nautical miles with each one and a half-hour orbit of Earth. The next engine firing by Atlantis was not scheduled until early Wednesday morning, and all activities remain on target for a docking with Mir at about 8 a.m. Thursday.

Today the first foreign dream wasn't too clear either. It had something to do with me, someother characters, and something about the stars. We were under the stars, or we were talking to the stars. I can visualize the sky with the stars but they may have also been a metaphor for people. Then I left somewhere and there was something about a goose, not sure what that meant, maybe something to do with staying meant something about a cooked goose.

The second foreign dream had a lot of detail. I was sitting on a bus with someone that I knew but I don't know who it was. It may have been Britney Spears but that makes no sense. I was sitting next to her and she was someone that I had lived with before, someone I had a relationship with, like a girlfriend. I was getting off the bus to a place I was staying that I don't recognize from anyplace I've been in real life. She asked me if I was really staying there, she may have commented that it was amazing I was staying there, or someone else said that. Apparently, it was the same place she and I had lived during our relationship. It was some kind of little travel trailer. A young woman was letting me stay there. I was taking up a little open seat or bench in a hallway of the trailer. I had a little storage bin to put my stuff in.

I can't remember now all the details in the dream, but I had a very clear and detailed dream a few hours ago where I was wearing a NASA astronaut flight suit. I remember thinking about details of that flight suit. It was orange and I remember thinking that it was similar to a standard U.S. Navy flight suit but the astronaut flight suit had the metal collar on it for the pressurized helmet. There were other details I can't quite articulate now. I can still visualize myself wearing that flight suit and I was walking through the streets in a city but I don't recognize where I was. I can vaguely remember seeing some other people there. I don't recognize the city but it reminds me of walking through the streets of Seattle. There might be other details that I have forgotten.

After the main engines start, but while the solid rocket boosters are still clamped to the pad, the offset thrust from the Shuttle's three main engines causes the entire launch stack (boosters, tank and shuttle) to pitch down about 2 m at cockpit level. This motion is called the "nod", or "twang" in NASA jargon. As the boosters flex back into their original shape, the launch stack pitches slowly back upright. This takes approximately six seconds. At the point when it is perfectly vertical, the boosters ignite and the launch commences.

Shortly after clearing the tower the Shuttle begins a roll and pitch program to set its orbital inclination and so that the vehicle is below the external tank and SRBs, with wings level. The vehicle climbs in a progressively flattening arc, accelerating as the weight of the SRBs and main tank decrease. To achieve low orbit requires much more horizontal than vertical acceleration. This is not visually obvious, since the vehicle rises vertically and is out of sight for most of the horizontal acceleration.

I was looking for photos of the STS-1 launch on 4/12/1981 and as I was looking at this photo of a later launch, for a brief instant, I almost thought I visualize seeing that orange booster tank from the windows of the Columbia.

I don't think it is visible while strapped into the flight deck chair though so maybe it was as I was climbing into the chair to wait for launch.

This was an elaborate decoy, as I recall, where the F-14 Tomcat's, the Fleet Defenders, were lured out to attack a large group of decoy drones. After the Fleet Defenders expended all their ordnance, pointlessly, on the drones, the Soviets launched the real attack on the U.S. Navy and allied aircraft carriers.

I can't remember now all the details of the dream earlier as I was sleeping but it seemed to be that I was in Clarence House. I can remember very clearly walking around in that house and it seemed as though there was a narrator at times but the details I was hearing escape my conscious awareness. I want to say that I was alone for the time I was in there and that I was staying there but yet I can vaguely remember seeing people around. I was aware of details of Charles, William, and Henry but I know specifically they were not there at the time. There was also something about a pair of dogs outside and the woman who controlled them but much of those details are vague. I was also pondering over the other houses nearby but associated details about that escape me as well. I was looking around a lot through the house and I can remember details fairly well but none of it seemed familiar so I don't know if those are actual memories that represent I have actually been in Clarence House. There also seemed to be some kind of point to the dream but that detail escapes me.

WASHINGTON -- NASA has assigned the crew for space shuttle mission STS-134 to the International Space Station. The flight will deliver the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, or AMS, to the station. The AMS is a state-of-the-art cosmic ray particle physics detector designed to examine fundamental issues about matter and the origin and structure of the universe.

Navy Capt. Mark Kelly will command the STS-134 mission. Retired Air Force Col. Gregory H. Johnson will serve as the pilot. Mission Specialists are Air Force Col. Michael Fincke, Greg Chamitoff and Andrew Feustel. European Space Agency astronaut and Italian Air Force Col. Roberto Vittori also will serve as a mission specialist.

The flight will include three spacewalks and the installation of the AMS to the exterior of the space station using both the shuttle and station arms. The AMS will be attached to the right side of the station's truss, or backbone.

In software, a stack buffer overflow (also known as stack smashing) occurs when a program writes to a memory address on the program's call stack outside of the intended data structure; usually a fixed length buffer. Stack buffer overflow bugs are caused when a program writes more data to a buffer located on the stack than there was actually allocated for that buffer. This almost always results in corruption of adjacent data on the stack, and in cases where the overflow was triggered by mistake, will often cause the program to crash or operate incorrectly. This type of overflow is part of the more general class of programming bugs known as buffer overflows.

If the affected program is running with special privileges, or accepts data from untrusted network hosts (e.g. a webserver) then the bug is a potential security vulnerability. If the stack buffer is filled with data supplied from an untrusted user then that user can corrupt the stack in such a way as to inject executable code into the running program and take control of the process. This is one of the oldest and more reliable methods for black hat hackers to gain unauthorized access to a computer.

NASA Chief Astronaut To Lead Final Shuttle Flight

BLOGGER NOTE: NASA moved up the STS-134 mission to haul up the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer -- previously scheduled to be the final shuttle flight -- to a target launch date on July 29, 2010. The STS-133 mission now is scheduled to launch Sept. 16, 2010.

NASA ASSIGNS CREW FOR FINAL SCHEDULED SPACE SHUTTLE MISSION

WASHINGTON -- NASA has assigned the crew for the last scheduled space shuttle mission, targeted to launch in September 2010. The flight to the International Space Station will carry a pressurized logistics module to the station.

Veteran shuttle commander and retired Air Force Col. Steven W. Lindsey will command the eight-day mission, designated STS-133. Air Force Col. Eric A. Boe will serve as the pilot; it will be his second flight as a shuttle pilot.

Tom Rath lives in Connecticut and commutes to work every day in Manhattan. He's happily married and has a loving wife and three children. Money is a bit tight and when the opportunity arises, he applies for a public relations job with a major television network. During his long commute to work everyday, Tom reminisces about the war. Although 10 years have gone by, he is still haunted by the violence and the men he killed. He also thinks of Maria, an Italian girl with whom he had an affair while stationed in Rome. At his new job, the head of the network Ralph Hopkins takes an immediate liking to him. Tom soon realizes that he will have to choose between becoming a wholly dedicated company man or maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

The Committee on Foreign Relations, to which was referred the Protocol of Amendments to the Convention on the International Hydrographic Organization, done at Monaco on April 14, 2005 (the ``Protocol'') (Treaty Doc. 110-9), having considered the same, reports favorably thereon as indicated in the resolution of advice and consent, and recommends that the Senate give its advice and consent to ratification thereof, as set forth in this report and the accompanying resolution of advice and consent.

The United States officially joined the forerunner of the IHO, the International Hydrographic Bureau, on June 20, 1922, pursuant to Congressional authorization contained in the Diplomatic and Consular Service Appropriation Act of March 2, 1921 (22 U.S.C. Sec. 275). The International Hydrographic Bureau was established to make navigation easier and safer throughout the world, but the Bureau encountered administrative problems because it lacked the international legal status of an intergovernmental organization. As a result, the Convention on the International Hydrographic Organization, done at Monaco on May 3, 1967 (the ``1967 Convention''), was concluded in order to provide a treaty basis for the International Hydrographic Bureau, giving it the international legal status of an intergovernmental organization. The 1967 Convention entered into force for the United States on September 22, 1970. The IHO is headquartered in the Principality of Monaco and over 80 countries are members of the Organization.

Fires continue to break out at the tsunami-devastated nuclear power plant ahead of the crisis level being raised to 7 with one raging in a building close to one of the reactors.

As workers continue to battle in vain to bring the situation under control at the Fukushima plant, a blaze was discovered in a room filled with batteries close to No 4 unit.


Japanese officials admitted today that the spread of radiation from its crippled nuclear plant was out of control and that the government had raised the crisis level to the worst on the international scale.

(A) PROLOGUE:

Returned from the 4th patrol on 3 September, 1944 and conducted normal refit at the U.S. Submarine Base, Pearl Harbor. In order to take part on the coming Formosa raid and to be in a position inside the Formosa Straits to intercept Japanese reinforcements for the coming Philippine Campaign, training and loading were completed four days in advance of schedule. Loaded 24 Mark 18 Mod 1 torpedoes
already prepared for the U.S.S. TAMBOR who had been delayed.


24 October 1944:

0600 Commenced submerged periscope patrol. On surfacing at dark headed for Turnabout Island feeling that the Japs would sow scarcely run traffic other than in the shallow protected waters along the China Coast. On approaching the islands at a range of 35,ooo yards other than land pips appeared on the radar screen until at tracking ranges the SJ was absolutely saturated.

The Staff had been correct in their estimate of the situation that the Japanese would likely send every available ship in support of the Philippine Campaign. The Leyte Campaign was in progress and the ships of this convoy as in the one on the 23rd were all heavily loaded. The tankers all carried planes on deck, and even the bows and sterns of the transports were piled high with apparent plane crates.

ATTACK NO. 4

The convoy was tracked on courses following the ragged coast at 12 knots. The Japanese became suspicious during our initial approach, two escorts commencing to run on opposite course to the long column, firing busts of 40mma and 5" salvos. As we continued to close the leading ships, the escort commander obligingly illuminated the column with 36" or 40" searchlights, using this to signal with. It gave us a perfect view of our first selected target, a three deck, two stack transport; of the second target, a three deck one stacker; and of the third, a large modern tanker. With ranges from 1400 yards on the first transport to 900 yards on the tanker, fired two Mk. 18 torpedoes each in low deliberate salvoes to pass under the middle and stack of the tanker. In spite of the apparent early warning and the sporadic shooting which was apparently designed to scare the submarine, no evasive tactics were employed by any of the ships. The torpedoes commenced hitting as we paralleled the convoy to search our next two targets. Our love for Mk. 18 Mod 1 torpedoes after the disappointing cruiser experience was again restored as all torpedoes hit nicely. We passed the next ship, a medium freighter, abeam at 600 yards and then turned for a stern shot at another tanker and transport astern of her. Fired a single stern torpedo under the tankers stack and one at the foremast and one at the mainmast of the transport. The ranges were between 600 and 700 yards. Things were anything but calm and peaceful now, for the escorts had stopped their warning tactics and were directing good salvoes at us and the blotches of smoke we left behind on going to full power to clear the melee. Just after firing at the transport, a full-fledged destroyer charged under her stern and headed our way and exactly what took place in the following seconds will never be determined, but the tanker was hit nicely and blew up, apparently a gasoline loaded job. At least one torpedo was observed to hit the transport and an instant later the destroyer blew up, either intercepting our third torpedo or possibly the 40mm fire from the two DE's bearing down on our beam. In any case, the result was the same and only the transport remained afloat and she apparently stopped.

We were as yet untouched, all gunfire either having cleared over our heads or being directed at the several blurps of smoke we emitted when pleading for more speed. When 10,000 yards from the transport we were all in the clear so stopped to look over the situation and re-check our last two torpedoes which had been loaded forward during our stern tube attack.

A half hour was spent with each torpedo, withdrawing it from the tube, ventilating the battery and checking the rudders and gyros. With everything in readiness started cautiously back in to get our cripple. The two DE's were patrolling on his seaward side, so made a wide sweep and came in very slow so as not to be detected even by sound. She was lower in the water but not definitely sinking. Checking our speed by pit log at 6 knots, fired our 23rd torpedo from 900 yards, aimed just forward of her mainmast. Observed the phosphorescent wake heading as aimed at our crippled target, fired our 24th and last torpedo at his foremast. Rang up emergency speed as this last torpedo broached and curved sharply to the left. Completed part of a fishtail maneuver in a futile attempt to clear the turning circle of this erratic circular run. The torpedo was observed through about 180d of its turn due to the phosphorescence of its wake. It struck abreast the after torpedo room with a violent explosion about 20 seconds after firing. The tops were blown off the only regular ballast tanks aft and the after three compartments flooded instantly. The Tang sank by the stern much as you would drop a pendulum suspended in a horizontal position. There was insufficient time even to carry out the last order to close the hatch. One consolation for those of us washed off into the water was the explosion of our 23rd torpedo and observation of our last target settling by the stern. Those who escaped in the morning, were greeted by the transport's bow sticking straight out of the water a thousand yards or so away.

BEIJING - A Chinese astronaut orbiting Earth slipped out of the Shenzhou VII spacecraft Saturday afternoon and performed the nation's first spacewalk.

Zhai Zhigang, 41, pulled himself out of the orbiting module at 4:40 p.m. Beijing time, latched himself to a handrail and then waved to a national audience during a live broadcast of the country's third manned space mission.

"I am here greeting the Chinese people and the people of the world," Zhai said, waving to a camera on the module.

The feat was part of China's effort to establish a space station by 2020 and eventually to land on the moon.

For the Chinese government, which devotes extensive media coverage to its manned space missions, the achievement was another step toward establishing itself as an economic and technological superpower.

President Hu Jintao watched the spacewalk from the space command center in Beijing on Saturday.

Another astronaut, Liu Boming, briefly poked his hand and part of his body out of the module, while the third astronaut stayed behind in case of an emergency.

THE FATE OF FRANCIS GARY POWERS


Downed U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers underwent extensive interrogation at the hands of the Soviets. His instructions from the CIA on what to do in event of capture were meager, and he had been told that he might as well tell the Soviets whatever they wanted to know because they could get the information from his aircraft anyway Nevertheless, Powers tried to conceal as much classified information as possible while giving the appearance of cooperating with his captors. To extract the maximum propaganda value from the U-2 Affair, the Soviets prepared an elaborate show trial for Powers, which began on 17 August 1960 Powers continued to conceal as much information as possible
