Tour of NASA site helps cap queen's trip Queen Elizabeth II began her last day in the United States on Tuesday with a tour of the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland - a visit that NASA officials promised would give her the opportunity to meet "21st century explorers of new worlds."
And that she did, chatting with astronauts and hearing accounts of what it's like to spend time in space.
Accompanied by NASA Administrator Michael Griffin, Queen Elizabeth and her husband, Prince Philip, were ushered into Goddard's mission control center, where British-born astronaut Michael Foale spoke with the international space station crew as it passed over the U.S.
The visit to Goddard came three weeks after NASA signed an agreement with the British National Space Centre to hold discussions on lunar science and exploration.
The queen later visited patients at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, then laid a wreath at the National World War II Memorial. Some vets said the timing was impeccable: Tuesday was VE Day, marking the allied powers' victory in Europe 62 years ago.
The queen and prince planned to fly home to England on Tuesday evening after dining at the British Embassy
